Abstract

We have integrated on oxidized silicon wafers superconductive films and Josephson junctions along with sol-gel optical channel waveguides. The fabrication process is carried out in two steps that result to be solid and non-invasive. It is demonstrated that 660 nm light, coupled from an optical fibre into the channel sol-gel waveguide, can be directed toward superconducting tunnel junctions whose current-voltage characteristics are affected by the presence of the radiation. The dependence of the change in the superconducting energy gap under optical pumping is discussed in terms of a non-equilibrium superconductivity model., Comment: Document composed of 7 pages of text and 3 figures

30. In-plane poling characterization of organic electro-optical polymer.

Abstract

The purpose of this work is to investigate the in-plane poling technique and to make a comparison with the corona poling technique. To this end we chose as a test material a well known guest-host system, disperse red 1 in polymethyl methacrilate. The second harmonic generation and the order parameter, determined by means of polarized absorption spectroscopy, have been monitored to test the effectiveness of the poling. We found out that the shorter the gap distance between the electrodes, the higher is the maximum achievable value of the applied voltage, without occurrence of the electrical discharge, this increase in the electrical field enhances the poling efficiency thus enlarging the possibility to employ this configuration in electro-optical devices, such as Mach–Zehnder modulators. The use of quartz slide instead of BK7 and the careful tuning of the coplanar-electrode distance allowed to reach a high poling efficiency, yielding a nonlinear coefficient upto 25 pm/V while a value not higher than 8 pm/V was obtained with a traditional corona poling. Abstract

High-energy inelastic neutron scattering (HINS) employing epithermal neutrons is a new technique under development at the VESUVIO spectrometer at ISIS, aiming to access the high-energy and low wave-vector transfer region in neutron scattering experiments at eV energies. New neutron detectors have been developed for HINS based on the resonant detector (RD). These make use of the detection of prompt gammas after neutron absorption in an analyzer foil. The RD is used in the very low angle detector (VLAD) bank, which will extend the explored kinematical region to momentum transfer <10 Å-1, whilst still keeping energy transfer >300 meV. The final VLAD will cover the scattering range 1-5° and will be installed by the end of 2005. The results obtained with prototype VLAD detectors on polycrystalline ice and liquid water in silica xerogels provide a demonstration of the feasibility of the measurements under realistic conditions. © 2006 Elsevier B.V.
