3. Fill-and-Spill, Tilt-and-Repeat (FaSTaR) cycles: stratigraphic evolution above a dynamic submarine stepped slope

Abstract

The classic fill-and-spill model is widely applied to interpret topographic controls on depositional architecture and facies distributions in slope successions with complicated topography. However, this model implies a constant topographic configuration over the lifespan of a turbidite system. In contrast, the impact on patterns of erosion and deposition above dynamic slopes whose topographic configuration varies spatially over time remains poorly investigated. Here, using high-resolution 3D seismic reflection data and more than 100 wells from a 40 km long stepped slope system (Campos Basin, offshore Brazil), we document the evolution of a sand-prone turbidite system active during the Oligocene-Miocene transition. This turbidite system was influenced by vertical and lateral deformation, and we propose a new stratigraphic model to explain the resultant depositional architecture. Two depocentres were identified as steps, with channels on the proximal step, and channel-lobe complexes on the distal step, bounded by sediment bypass-dominated ramps. Lateral stepping of channels on the proximal step, and oblique stacking of the down-dip lobe complexes, each cut by through-going channels, indicate multiple fill-and-spill cycles. A persistent NE-ward stepping and thickening on the steps is interpreted to reflect lateral tilting of the seafloor driven by salt tectonics. The dynamic substrate prevented the establishment of a single long-lived conduit across the proximal step, as recorded in systems with fixed topographic configurations. The filling of through-going channels with mud at the end of each cycle suggests waxing-to-waning sediment supply cycles and periods of sand starvation, when the lateral tilting dominated and drove avulsion of the feeder channels towards topographic lows. This study demonstrates that subtle dynamic slope deformation punctuated by discrete sediment supply cycles results in complex stratigraphic patterns with multiple phases, and multiple entry and exit points, during repeated cycles of fill-and-spill, tilt-and-repeat (FaSTaR). These are likely to be present in other stepped slope systems.

Abstract

Alternatives to enhance the consensual low phosphorus (P) use efficiency of agriculture may include use of phosphate rock (PR) and plant species with unequal ability to get soil and rock P interplanted in cropping systems to allow plants with higher ability to facilitate access to P of plants with lower ability. This study investigated (i) the maize and three soil cover crops on their capacity to acquire P from PR and (ii) measured P acquisition of maize interplanted with the soil cover crop with the highest capacity to acquire P shown in (i). Experiments were carried out in a greenhouse, with plants grown in single and mixed cropping in pots containing a sandy, low?P soil amended with Monocalcium Phosphate (McP) or the Brazilian PR Itafós. Plant biomass production with PR, in relation to McP, was 83.7 % for buckwheat, 83.6 % for forage radish, 51.8 % for maize, and 0.3 % for pigeon pea. Buckwheat showed capacity of acquiring P from PR; nevertheless, it did not increase growth or P nutrition of maize interplanted in the soil amended with PR, showing no significant P facilitation. The soil amended with McP showed competition between the two plants in the pots. Maize had a greater growth in mixed than in single cropping and this occurred at the expenses of buckwheat. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Smoking has been linked to mucinous ovarian cancer, but its effects on other ovarian cancer subtypes and on overall ovarian cancer risk are unclear, and the findings from most studies with relevant data are unpublished. To assess these associations, we review the published and unpublished evidence. METHODS: Eligible epidemiological studies were identified by electronic searches, review articles, and discussions with colleagues. Individual participant data for 28,114 women with and 94,942 without ovarian cancer from 51 epidemiological studies were analysed centrally, yielding adjusted relative risks (RRs) of ovarian cancer in smokers compared with never smokers. FINDINGS: After exclusion of studies with hospital controls, in which smoking could have affected recruitment, overall ovarian cancer incidence was only slightly increased in current smokers compared with women who had never smoked (RR 1·06, 95% CI 1·01-1·11, p=0·01). Of 17,641 epithelial cancers with specified histology, 2314 (13%) were mucinous, 2360 (13%) endometrioid, 969 (5%) clear-cell, and 9086 (52%) serous. Abstract

Background Smoking has been linked to mucinous ovarian cancer, but its effects on other ovarian cancer subtypes and on overall ovarian cancer risk are unclear, and the findings from most studies with relevant data are unpublished. To assess these associations, we review the published and unpublished evidence. Methods Eligible epidemiological studies were identified by electronic searches, review articles, and discussions with colleagues. Individual participant data for 28 114 women with and 94 942 without ovarian cancer from 51 epidemiological studies were analysed centrally, yielding adjusted relative risks (RRs) of ovarian cancer in smokers compared with never smokers. Findings After exclusion of studies with hospital controls, in which smoking could have affected recruitment, overall ovarian cancer incidence was only slightly increased in current smokers compared with women who had never smoked (RR 1.06, 95% CI 1.01-1.11, p=0.01). Of 17 641 epithelial cancers with specified histology, 2314 (13%) were mucinous, 2360 (13%) endometrioid, 969 (5%) clear-cell, and 9086 (52%) serous. Abstract

Background: Only about half the studies that have collected information on the relevance of women’s height and body mass index to their risk of developing ovarian cancer have published their results, and findings are inconsistent. Here, we bring together the worldwide evidence, published and unpublished, and describe these relationships. Methods and Findings: Individual data on 25,157 women with ovarian cancer and 81,311 women without ovarian cancer from 47 epidemiological studies were collected, checked, and analysed centrally. Adjusted relative risks of ovarian cancer were calculated, by height and by body mass index. Abstract

Background Oral contraceptives were introduced almost 50 years ago, and over 100 million women currently use them. Oral contraceptives can reduce the risk of ovarian cancer, but the eventual public-health effects of this reduction will depend on how long the protection lasts after use ceases. We aimed to assess these effects. Methods Individual data for 23 257 women with ovarian cancer (cases) and 87 303 without ovarian cancer (controls) from 45 epidemiological studies in 21 countries were checked and analysed centrally. The relative risk of ovarian cancer in relation to oral contraceptive use was estimated, stratifying by study, age, parity, and hysterectomy. Findings Overall 7308 (31%) cases and 32 717 (37%) controls had ever used oral contraceptives, for average durations among users of 4 . 4 and 5 . 0 years, respectively. For other study designs, the relative risk of ovarian cancer per 5 cm increase in height was 1.07 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.05-1.09; p<0.001); this relationship did not vary significantly by women's age, year of birth, education, age at menarche, parity, menopausal status, smoking, alcohol consumption, having had a hysterectomy, having first degree relatives with ovarian or breast cancer, use of oral contraceptives, or use of menopausal hormone therapy. For body mass index, there was significant heterogeneity (p<0.001) in the findings between ever-users and never-users of menopausal hormone therapy, but not by the 11 other factors listed above. The relative risk for ovarian cancer per 5 kg/m(2) increase in body mass index was 1.10 (95% CI, 1.07-1.13; p<0.001) in never-users and 0.95 (95% CI, 0.92-0.99; p = 0.02) in ever-users of hormone therapy. Conclusions: Ovarian cancer is associated with height and, among never-users of hormone therapy, with body mass index. In high-income countries, both height and body mass index have been increasing in birth cohorts now developing the disease. O herbicida imazaquin é uma molécula orgânica com grupos funcionais ionizáveis, sendo sua sorção dependente do pH e da carga elétrica líquida do solo. Neste trabalho, foi estudada a sorção do imazaquin nas camadas superficiais e subsuperficiais de um Latossolo Vermelho Acriférrico típico textura muito argilosa, considerando quatro diferentes valores de pH. Com uso de moléculas radiomarcadas com carbono-14, determinou-se a quantidade sorvida pela diferença entre a quantidade aplicada e a remanescente em solução. Os resultados foram ajustados à equação de Freundlich, para determinação do coeficiente de sorção (Kf). De maneira geral, o herbicida apresentou baixa sorção no solo. Nas amostras coletadas nas duas profundidades, a sorção diminuiu com a elevação do pH. Para um mesmo valor de pH, a sorção foi maior no horizonte subsuperficial do que no superficial, sendo a carga líquida positiva resultante do baixo teor de matéria orgânica e dos elevados conteúdos de óxidos de ferro e de alumínio. Quando a carga elétrica líquida do solo foi positiva, não foi possível predizer a sorção de imazaquin, considerando apenas a especiação da molécula e a sua partição na fração orgânica do solo. Imazaquin herbicide is an organic molecule presenting ionizable functional groups, with its sorption depending on soil pH and electrical charges. In this research, sorption of imazaquin was evaluated on an Anionic Acrudox at different soil depths and pH values. Radiolabelled (14C) molecules were employed to study imazaquin sorption, which was estimated by the difference between applied concentration and that remaining in solution. The sorption data were fitted to Freundlich equation to determine the sorption coefficient values (Kf), which were, overall, low in the studied soil. At both soil depths, sorption decreased as pH increased. However, at a similar pH value, sorption was higher on the subsurface than on the surface sample, probably due to the positive charges resulting from the low organic matter and high Al and Fe oxide contents. When the soil surface charges were positive it was not possible to predict imazaquin sorption only from molecule speciation and its hydrophobic partition into soil organic fractions.

Abstract

This study investigates the CBM generation and CO2 storage capacity of the coal-bearing Permian age Rio Bonito Formation in the Santa Terezinha Coalfield, Paraná Basin, Brazil. In order to assess the volumetrics of the coal seams a fourth-order sequence stratigraphic framework of the coal-bearing succession was established based on parasequence boundaries. A 3D geometric model based on data from 36 well logs was developed, and enabled subdivision of the study area into regions with very different CBM potential, due to variable cumulative coal thickness, depths and presence/absence of diabase. Strata of the coal-bearing Rio Bonito Formation were penetrated in well CBM001-ST-RS at a depth of 575.70 to 638.35 m, from which twelve coal seams and carbonaceous shales, ranging in thickness from 0.15 to 1.77 m, were retrieved for analysis. Gas desorption values range from 0.3 to 2.2 cm3/g. Gas composition is dominated by methane (> 94 Vol%). Gas isotopic analyses suggest a mixed biogenic and thermogenic origin. Vitrinite reflectance indicate a rank of high volatile A bituminous coal, with semi-anthracite occurring in contact with igneous rocks. The majority of the samples has vitrinite group contents > 50 Vol%, mineral matter-free basis. Ash yields range from 42.1 to 92.8 wt.%, whereas sulphur contents range from 0.1 to 7.7 wt.%. Volatile matter and calorific values (dry ash-free) range from 37.6 to 79.4 wt.%, and 2352 to 8107 kcal/kg, respectively. Mineral composition of the samples is dominated by quartz and kaolinite, whereas major element analyses show that SiO2 is most abundant. The 3D model allowed volumetric calculation for the coal seams and formed the basis for calculations of gas content and CO2 storage capacity. According to the 3D model the four coal-bearing parasequences of the study area contain a coal volume on the order of 3212 × 10 6 m3 suggesting a resource base of 5.5 × 109 m3 of methane associated with the coal seams and carbonaceous shales of the study area. The methane and carbon dioxide sorption capacities show a high positive correlation with TOC content. The coal seams appear to be undersaturated, since sorption capacity is significantly higher than the desorbed gas volume. The CO2 sorption capacity at mean reservoir pressure was up to 7 times higher than the methane sorption capacity. Based upon sorption capacities and reservoir conditions, a storage potential of 13.8 Gt CO2 in coal seams and carbonaceous shales of the study area is estimated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We analyze experience with 600 specimens for in vitro chemosensitivity assessment of human neoplasms utilizing a soft agar colony-forming technique. Good test reproducibility is demonstrated. Disaggregation with collagenase enhances yield and does not alter chemosensitivity profiles. Therapeutic exposure to chemotherapy prior to biopsy reduces in vitro sensitivity to the specific agents used in vitro. The cyclophosphamide derivatives 4-hydroperoxycyclo phosphamide (4-HC) and phosphoramide mustard are active in vitro, and produce comparable rank order sensitivities among tested tumors. There is marked reduction of in vitro 4-HC sensitivity in patients with prior therapeutic cyclophosphamide exposure, supporting the use of this derivative in test systems. Rank order of test results among specimens is compared at 0.1 microgram and 10 microgram drug/ml. 36. Reproductive, genetic, and dietary risk factors for ovarian cancer.

Abstract

A case-control study of 110 women with ovarian epithelial carcinoma and 220 individually age-matched controls was conducted in Hokkaido, Japan, to identify ovarian cancer risk factors. Both the cases and the matched controls were surveyed either from 1980 to 1981 or from 1985 to 1986. Ovarian cancer risk was increased in single women (p less than 0.01), and in women with a family history of breast, uterine, or ovarian cancer in a mother or sister (p less than 0.001). Conversely, risk was decreased in women who had experienced a livebirth (p less than 0.001), an induced abortion (p less than 0.05), or who had had permanent sterilization by tubal ligation (p less than 0.05). Each of the reproductive factors remained significant when adjusted for each other using logistic regression analysis. The odds ratio for ovarian cancer decreased significantly with increasing number of livebirths (p less than 0.001). Furthermore, a significant negative association between anovulatory periods and ovarian cancer risk was noted (p less than 0.01). No association was observed for any types of contraceptive methods other than tubal ligation, but the prevalence of oral contraceptive use was very low. A significant positive association with daily fish consumption (p less than 0.05) and a marginally significant negative association with daily milk consumption (p = 0.05) were also observed.

37. Familial breast cancer in a population-based series.

Abstract

Breast cancer risks to sisters of breast cancer patients were examined in a population-based series of patients diagnosed in Los Angeles County between 1971 and 1975. Sisters of bilateral patients diagnosed at age 50 years or younger had substantially increased risk (relative risk (RR) = 5.5), and risk was even higher for sisters of bilateral patients diagnosed at age 40 years or younger (RR = 10.5). Half of the breast cancers in sisters of bilateral cases occurred in the family of a single bilateral patient whose disease was diagnosed at age 39 years. Sisters of unilateral patients diagnosed at age 50 years or younger did not have significantly increased risk, but sisters of unilateral patients diagnosed at age 40 years or younger appeared to have increased risk (RR = 2.4). Risk to sisters of bilateral patients was slightly higher if the patient's contralateral diagnoses were less than three years apart than if they were three years apart or greater (RR = 6.3 vs. 3.9), but this difference was not statistically significant.
