2. Magnetic fields: a tool for the study of organic solar cells

Abstract

Charge transfer in polymer devices represents a crucial, though highly inaccessible stage of photocurrent generation. In this article we propose studying the properties and behaviour of organic solar cells through the modification of photocurrent generation when an external magnetic field is applied. By allowing the parameters of our theoretical model not to be constrained to any specific material, we are able to show that not only a modest external magnetic field leads to a significant increase in photocurrent intensity, but also how such magnetic field can be used to study in detail the energy levels and transition rates within the polymer compound. Systematic exploration of key properties in organic composites thus can lead to highly optimised devices in which a magnetic field produces an enhancement in the efficiency of polymer solar cells., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. Abstract

Charge separation is a critical process for achieving high efficiencies in organic photovoltaic cells. The initial tightly bound excitonic electron-hole pair has to dissociate fast enough in order to avoid photocurrent generation and thus power conversion efficiency loss via geminate recombination. Such process takes place assisted by transitional states that lie between the initial exciton and the free charge state. Due to spin conservation rules these intermediate charge transfer states typically have singlet character. Here we propose a donor-acceptor model for a generic organic photovoltaic cell in which the process of charge separation is modulated by a magnetic field which tunes the energy levels. The impact of a magnetic field is to intensify the generation of charge transfer states with triplet character via inter-system crossing. As the ground state of the system has singlet character, triplet states are recombination-protected, thus leading to a higher probability of successful charge separation. Using the open quantum systems formalism we demonstrate that not only the population of triplet charge transfer states grows in the presence of a magnetic field, but also how the power outcome of an organic photovoltaic cell is in that way increased., Comment: Seven pages and four figures. Abstract

Non-Markovian effects in the evolution of open quantum systems have recently attracted widespread interest, particularly in the context of assessing the efficiency of energy and charge transfer in nanoscale biomolecular networks and quantum technologies. With the aid of many-body simulation methods, we uncover and analyse an ultrafast environmental process that causes energy relaxation in the reduced system to depend explicitly on the phase relation of the initial state preparation. Remarkably, for particular phases and system parameters, the net energy flow is uphill, transiently violating the principle of detailed balance, and implying that energy is spontaneously taken up from the environment. A theoretical analysis reveals that non-secular contributions, significant only within the environmental correlation time, underlie this effect. This suggests that environmental energy harvesting will be observable across a wide range of coupled quantum systems., Comment: 5 + 4 pages, 3 + 2 figures. Comments welcome

Abstract

Proanthocyanidins are important phenolic fraction for wine quality, contributing to astringency, bitterness and color. Their metabolism begins in the mouth and continues throughout the gastrointestinal tract; however, most of them are accumulated in the colon where are metabolized by the intestinal microbiota, giving rise to a whole series of phenolic acids that may have greater activity at physiological level than the precursors[1]. This study aimed to evaluate in vitro the bioaccessibility of proanthocyanidins in a red wine developed by Bodegas Pradorey, as well as to evaluate the potential effect of intestinal microbiota on polyphenols metabolism identifying and quantifying secondary metabolites. The evaluation of the effects of the intestinal microbiota was carried out using an in vitro Digester of Colonic Fermentation. The fecal microbiota was inoculated, and 100 mL of red wine was added daily for 14 days. For the determination of proanthocyanidins and phenolic metabolites, related, high performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QqQ-MS/MS) was used. The major phenolic metabolites detected were propionic and acetic acid, and the highest concentrations were detected in the transverse and descending colon, mainly at the end of fermentation process. On the other hand, the main families of microbial proanthocyanidin metabolites detected were valerolactones and benzoic acids mainly between 10-14 days of wine fermentation.

16. Laboratory Fast Methods to Determine the Moisture Content of Solid Biofuels

Abstract

The main objective of this work is to present different laboratory test methods to quickly determine the moisture content of solid biofuels. In this study, fast methods for moisture determination (using a microwave oven –MW-, an infrared stove –IR-, a near-infrared spectrophotometer –NIR-, and a thermogravimetric analyzer –TGA-) were evaluated and compared with the reference method described in the standard ISO 18134-2. Five different fuels were tested: olive stones, almond shells, wood pellets, wood chips and wheat straw. The method performance characteristics (accuracy, repeatability and reproducibility), including the measurement of the uncertainty were evaluated. NIR was the most accurate and precise fast method, with recoveries ranging 96-99% and expanded uncertainties below 2%. However, NIR instruments need to be calibrated for each particular type of fuel, as they strongly depend on the sample typology and particle size. MW method also offered good recoveries (=93%) and expanded uncertainties of =7%, similarly to those offered by the reference method. Abstract

The primary objective of this study was to assess whether the topical administration of two neuroprotective drugs (brimonidine and somatostatin) could prevent or arrest retinal neurodysfunction in patients with type 2 diabetes. For this purpose, adults aged between 45 and 75 years with a diabetes duration ≥5 years and an Early Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) level of ≤35 were randomly assigned to one of three arms: placebo, somatostatin, or brimonidine. The primary outcome was the change in implicit time (IT) assessed by multifocal electroretinography between baseline and at the end of follow-up (96 weeks). There were 449 eligible patients allocated to brimonidine (n = 152), somatostatin (n = 145), or placebo (n = 152). When the primary end point was evaluated in the whole population, we did not find any neuroprotective effect of brimonidine or somatostatin. However, in the subset of patients (34.7%) with preexisting retinal neurodysfunction, IT worsened in the placebo group (P < 0.001) but remained unchanged in the brimonidine and somatostatin groups. In conclusion, the topical administration of the selected neuroprotective agents appears useful in preventing the worsening of preexisting retinal neurodysfunction. This finding points to screening retinal neurodysfunction as a critical issue to identify a subset of patients in whom neuroprotective treatment might be of benefit.
