Achieving size control during nanomaterial synthesis is critical for their deployment in numerous applications due to their strong size-properties relationships. However, it remains a challenge in the field due to multi-step mechanisms in nanoparticle synthesis. In this paper, we present an experimentally-validated model able to predict the particle size and distribution of silver nanoparticles synthesised in flow reactors by coupling time-resolved fluid dynamic simulations with population balance. The model reveals fundamental correlations between reactor design and the corresponding size of the nanoparticles. It shows that increasing mixing rate, increases the overall rate of nanoparticle formation, where nanoparticle synthesis takes place homogeneously in the whole of the reaction volume. In contrast, when there is a distinguishable interface between reactant streams (i.e. low mixing rate), nucleation and growth take place in a small fraction of the reaction volume in the interface between the inlet streams. The combination of fast mixing and high average nucleation rate can lead to a burst of nuclei formation translated in small size and narrow size distribution. This work presents a new approach for the use of computational-guided design of reactors for the synthesis of nanomaterials to move the field away from current trial-and-error strategies. • Novel multiregional DOM with anisotropic scattering developed for OpenFOAM. • Successful validation vs analytical solution and verification vs standard DOM. • Quadrature rotation reduces significantly the directional error in parallel beams. • Power cosine or cone shaped adjusted quadrature for improved simulation of LED. This work describes adaptive quadrature, a new feature designed to improve the Discrete Ordinate Method (DOM) in parallel and cone-shaped radiation sources. OpenFOAM was chosen as the simulation framework to implement the new feature. It already included a Discrete Ordinate Method (fvDOM), but it focuses on thermal radiation and is limited to isotropic emission, diffuse phenomena, and non-scattering media. The model was completed to cover volumetric and superficial absorption, isotropic and anisotropic scattering (with user-defined phase functions), diffuse and specular reflection, diffuse and parallel transmission, and three types of superficial emission sources, i.e., isotropic, cone-shaped, and parallel. Additionally, the model is prepared to work in grey mode or with wavelength bands. Multiple regions with different optical properties are also allowed. Most of the model has been validated by individual simulations of every feature in simple geometries that permit an analytical solution, with errors between 0% and 6.08%. These simulations were also verified in a comparison with an established version of the standard DOM, with differences between model implementations below 2.5%. Some advantages of the developed adaptive quadrature are also analysed using simulation results for different radiative sources and angular discretization. The main conclusion is that adaptive quadrature better defines view angle and light direction of emission sources compared to the established DOM, improving significantly the accuracy of the simulation of non-isotropic sources. This work describes the critical role of the matching between the spectral distribution of the incident light and the absorption spectra of the semiconductor material on the accuracy of the simulation of solar photocatalytic reactors. In silico results have been generated by a multiphysics model including the rigorous description of the hydrodynamics, radiation transfer, mass transport and chemical reaction rate, with the particular feature of using a spectral band discretization approach for the resolution of the radiation balance and the estimation of the spectral local volumetric rate of photon absorption. Model predictions with a mechanistic kinetic model have been experimentally validated using a solar reactor based on a tubular reactor coupled to a compound parabolic collector (CPC) under illumination with a solar simulator (xenon lamp) and natural sunlight. Small differences in the spectral distribution of both light sources led to significantly different predictions for the reaction rate, explaining the higher efficiency experimentally achieved with natural sunlight in comparison with the solar simulator for equivalent total UV-A irradiances. The developed model is able to explain the discrepancies between experimental results in solar simulators and under natural sunlight, usually reported in the literature, offering a novel numerical approach for rigorous modelling of photoreactors using light sources with any spectral distribution. Hybrid photocatalysis/membrane processes constitute promising alternatives for water and wastewater treatment because they combine the efficiencies of filtration membranes technology and the oxidative effect of the photocatalytic process, increasing the lifetime of the membranes. The main challenge of these systems is the incorporation of the titanium dioxide (TiO 2) catalyst without altering the filtration properties of the membrane and the photocatalytic activity of the catalyst. One way to achieve this goal is generating the TiO 2 layer by direct anodization of titanium supports under controlled conditions to form titanium dioxide nanotubes (TiO 2 -NTs). This work reports the development of novel photocatalytic titanium membranes based on the formation of TiO 2 -NT arrays by anodization under both potentiostatic and galvanostatic conditions, and the scaling-up of the most promising systems to operational membrane photoreactors. The results demonstrated that the galvanostatic method displays more controlled tuneability to obtain NTs formation than the potentiostatic method on porous surfaces. However, despite the formation of TiO 2 -NTs structures, the observed photocatalytic activity is lower than that exhibited by TiO 2 nanoparticles deposited directly on the membrane, although in this case the transmembrane pressure is significantly higher, and therefore the operational pumping costs are greater. Synergistic effects of photocatalysis and microfiltration are clearly demonstrated in the application of the hybrid system to the removal of bacteria for water disinfection processes, showing a significant improvement in the inactivation of E. coli bacteria in water with respect to the bare membrane. Abstract An air purification reactor working under the standard ISO 22197-1 is studied and used for the determination of the intrinsic kinetic parameters of the NOx photocatalytic removal. A new mechanistic kinetic model considering explicitly the radiation step is proposed. The derived reaction rate expressions for NO and NO 2 include the dependence on the concentration of NO, NO 2 and the local superficial rate of photon absorption. The air purification reactor was modelled using a numerical simulation methodology to validate homogeneity of the light distribution reaching the catalyst surface and go deep in the knowledge of fluid dynamic behaviour. Based on these results, general guidelines of the reactor behaviour working under the ISO 22197-1 standard can be stablished, being the first time that this reactor is modelled with a global predictive approach. Radiation intensity over the catalyst surface was confirmed to reach the specified value of 10 ± 0.5 W m−2. Plug flow can be applied in the studied reactor with an axial dispersion module lower than 0.001. However, the diffusion of chemical species in the reactor was also studied, as well as the impact of mass transfer phenomena on the accuracy of the calculated kinetic parameters. A comprehensive simulation model of the ISO reactor, including fluid dynamics, radiation, photochemical reaction and mass transfer was developed. The simulation results confirm that the kinetic parameters obtained without considering mass transfer limitation fail to reproduce the experimental data, whereas a global error lower than a 17% was achieved including the diffusion of the species in the reactor. The proposed methodology, experimentally validated, could be successfully applied to the prediction of the performance of different type of photocatalytic reactors or even open systems for NOx pollutants. Abstract: A three‐dimensional numerical model was solved for a turbulent incompressible steady flow and the discrepancies and similarities between the software OpenFOAM® and ANSYS® Fluent on the flow modeling were analyzed. The evaluation was performed for the meshing, setup, and simulation step of the modeling process. Outcomes were contrasted with experimental data to validate the fluid flow obtained with both softwares. With this aim, an experimental pulse‐response technique was applied to obtain the residence time distribution (RTD) curve to be compared with the RTD curves achieved from the modeling. This work describes the procedure for the simulation of the operation of a photocatalytic reactor by using a multiphysics computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model based on the determination of the intrinsic kinetics parameters in an optically differential photoreactor. The model includes the rigorous description of the hydrodynamics, radiation transfer, mass transport and chemical reaction rate based on a mechanistic kinetic model. Possible existence of dead and recirculation zones has been identified from the flow field, showing a non-uniform flow through the reactor domain. The theoretical laminar profile is not reached due to the short length of the annular core and the departure from the ideal models has been quantified. The predicted velocity field has been experimentally validated with good agreement by injecting a tracer. The radiation field was simulated for slurry TiO 2 suspensions with concentrations between 0.005 and 5 g·L −1 , showing an optimum catalyst loading around 0.1–0.2 g·L −1 . Above this value, the increase in the absorption of radiation is negligible, whereas a more non-uniform radiation profile develops, keeping the most external regions of the reactor in the dark. The results of photocatalytic activity, using methanol oxidation as test reaction, showed good agreement between model predictions and experimental data, with errors between 2% and 10% depending on the catalyst concentration. The successful validation confirms not only the scientific background of the model, but also supports its applicability for engineering purposes in the design and optimization of large scale photocatalytic reactor to overcome some of limitations hindering the industrial development of this technology. A novel method for preparing hybrid polymer-titania nanotube (TNT) arrays with promising optical, catalytic and filtration applications is reported. The procedure is based on a one-step rapid galvanostatic anodization followed by the transfer of the TNT arrays to a polymer support by applying heat and pressure. The fraction of open-ended tubes can be controlled by changing the intensity of the current at the end of the anodization step. For example, completely open-ended or close-ended TNT arrays can be obtained by applying high or low current intensity, respectively at the end of the anodization process. The reported procedure allows the one-step simple and rapid preparation of flexible hybrid polymer-TNT materials which have great potential for photonic flow-through membranes. This work focused on the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of H2/N2 separation in a membrane permeator module containing a supported dense Pd-based membrane that was prepared using electroless pore-plating (ELP-PP). An easy-to-implement model was developed based on a source–sink pair formulation of the species transport and continuity equations. The model also included the Darcy–Forcheimer formulation for modeling the porous stainless steel (PSS) membrane support and Sieverts' law for computing the H2 permeation flow through the dense palladium film. Two different reactor configurations were studied, which involved varying the hydrogen flow permeation direction (in–out or out–in). A wide range of experimental data was simulated by considering the impact of the operating conditions on the H2 separation, such as the feed pressure and the H2 concentration in the inlet stream. Simulations of the membrane permeator device showed an excellent agreement between the predicted and experimental data (measured as permeate and retentate flows and H2 separation). Molar fraction profiles inside the permeator device for both configurations showed that concentration polarization near the membrane surface was not a limit for the hydrogen permeation but could be useful information for membrane reactor design, as it showed the optimal length of the reactor. This work focuses, for the first time, on the mechanistic modelling of wastewater disinfection by the solar photo-Fenton process using controlled solar simulated radiation. At circumneutral pH, iron precipitates forming hydroxides and significantly affecting the optical properties of the water. In this regard, radiation transfer in the reactor has been taken into account. The proposed model considers that the solar inactivation of bacteria follows a serial n-event mechanism with n reversible steps of photonic attacks leading to the bacterial inactivation. Dark Fenton cyclic process of hydroxyl radical formation from hydrogen peroxide is considered to be mediated mainly by precipitated iron species, prevailing at circumneutral pH. Finally, the photo-Fenton process was modelled using a multiple target – multiple hit mechanistic approach that accounts for the synergistic effect between the photonic and the hydroxyl radical attacks to the bacteria. This work presents the enhanced numerical simulation of the radiation transport in three different types of photocatalytic reactor using a novel Discrete Ordinate Method model recently developed for the open-source Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) platform OpenFOAM. The photoreactors represent commonly used geometries and illumination sources in the field of heterogeneous photocatalysis: an annular reactor illuminated by a mercury fluorescent lamp, a tubular reactor coupled to a compound parabolic collector illuminated by sunlight, and a tubular reactor illuminated by LEDs. Simulations were carried out for different photocatalyst concentrations, considering absorption and anisotropic scattering, showing differences smaller than 2.4% with respect to the results obtained by commercial CFD software for systems with isotropic emission, such as fluorescent lamps. Moreover, the model was able to improve the simulation of solar reactors and dramatically outperformed the simulation of LED sources, due to the combined effect of quadrature rotation and cone-limit fitting for cone-shaped sources, as well as a LED-specific power-cosine light distribution. The developed model has been thoroughly validated and is now available to the open-source CFD community. It allows a comprehensive numerical simulation of radiation transport using any type of light source, with applications in numerous engineering fields where optical phenomena affect the performance of the process. A novel procedure for the simulation of solar water disinfection (SODIS) processes in flow reactors is presented. The modeling approach includes the rigorous description of hydrodynamics, radiation transfer, mass transport and bacterial inactivation phenomena within the reactor by means of a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. The methodology has been evaluated in a tubular reactor coupled with a compound parabolic collector (CPC). Velocity profiles have been validated versus theoretical fully developed flow, and radiation fields versus both ray tracing and experimental actinometrical measurements. Incorporation of the solar vector calculation significantly improves the model capabilities for prediction of the potential performance of the SODIS process at different geographical coordinates and operation time. A mechanistic kinetic model was used for the description of the bacterial inactivation rate with explicit radiation absorption effects, coupling the radiation field with the mass balances of viable bacterial species. Model predictions successfully reproduce the experimental data of E. coli inactivation under different irradiances of both simulated and natural solar light with a normalized root mean squared logarithmic error (NRMSLE) of 6.65% and 9.72%, respectively. Therefore, this novel methodology is confirmed as a useful tool for the scaling-up of the SODIS process to large volume systems to be installed in remote communities where safe drinking water is not available. In this article, magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) coated with glycopolymer bearing glucose moieties were designed with optimal structural, colloidal, and magnetic properties for biomedical applications. MNPs with an average size of 17 ± 2 nm were synthesized by thermal decomposition process and then their surfaces were modified with active vinyl groups. Two different monomers were immobilized onto the surfaces: dopamine methacrylamide, a monomer with properties inspired on mussels adhesive capacity, or unprotected glycomonomer, 2-{[( D-glucosamin-2 N-yl)carbonyl]-oxy}ethyl methacrylate. Afterward, the glycomonomer were polymerized at the interface of both vinyl functionalized MNPs by conventional radical polymerization. The resultant hybrid NPs were water dispersible presenting good stability in aqueous solution for long time periods. Moreover, the high density of carbohydrates at the surface of the magnetic NPs could confer targeting properties to the system as demonstrated by studies of their binding interactions with lectins, where the binding activity is higher as the glycopolymer content augments. The magnetic and magneto-thermal properties of the synthesized hybrid NPs were evaluated. The magnetization curves reveal superparamagnetic features at 300 K, with high values of saturation magnetization. Furthermore, the hybrid glycoparticles show suitable heat dissipation power when exposed to alternating magnetic field conditions. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, the degradation of diclofenac (DCF), a frequently detected non-steroidal pharmaceutical, was evaluated by using UV-B and UV-C (265, 285, and 310 nm) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) alone and in combination with hydrogen peroxide (UV/H 2 O 2) and free chlorine (UV/FC). The degradation of DCF followed a pseudo first-order kinetic, and their trend reflected the pattern of the molar absorption coefficients of the DCF and the oxidants. A positive synergistic factor was found for the UV-LED driven advanced oxidation processes in almost all cases, but despite the higher degradation rates, the overall electricity demand is similar to UV alone due to the oxidants' energy cost. The rigorous kinetic degradation mechanisms at different wavelengths were proposed for the two processes, UV/H 2 O 2 and UV/FC, where the predicted values were respectively k HO = 9.12 · 109 M−1 s−1 and k Cl = 1.30 · 1010 M−1 s−1. No significant synergy (p > 0.05) was found for the dual-wavelength system (265 + 285 nm), and the time-based constants in all cases changed linearly with lamp intensity. Finally, dissolved organic carbon and phytotoxicity analysis revealed low mineralisation (around 20–30%) associated with the formation of stable dimers and a decrease in toxicity towards tomato and radish seeds. In the main, this work shows the great potential of implementing wavelength-specific LEDs in water treatments and effectively designing the reactor playing with adjustable intensities and kinetic degradation rates.
