Objective: To examine how specific aspects of a hookup are related to feelings of regret among college students, and how these patterns vary by gender and college context. Participants: Freshmen and sophomore men (n = 92) and women (n = 283) from a Midwestern university and community college. Methods: Participants answered questions about their most recent hookup and feelings of regret. Results: Frequency of engaging in a hookup was similar across gender and college context. Men and women were more likely to regret hookups with strangers and when alcohol was involved. Women had fewer regrets when their last hookup occurred with a partner they had also hooked up with in the past than when the hookup occurred only once with that partner. University students reported more regret when the hookup occurred with a stranger, occurred only one time, and when alcohol was used, but this was not found for community college students. Conclusions: Future research should examine hookup experiences through a developmental lens.

As middle and high school students consume and create their own pornography or use it as a form of violence perpetration known as image-based sexual abuse, school staff struggle to find appropriate responses to these issues. As pornography use becomes more prevalent, and discourse on sexual violence more public, pornography education could become a tool for preventing sexual violence and promoting sexual health. In response, we explored the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of "PopPorn," a 4-module pornography and IBSA professional development training program in a sample of staff who work for Midwestern public schools (i.e., schools providing free public education funded by tax dollars and maintained by local government). Results indicate that the majority of staff perceive student pornography use and IBSA perpetration to be critical problems that negatively impact school climate. Results also indicate that the "PopPorn" brief intervention increases staff knowledge of and efficacy in addressing pornography and IBSA-related problems and reduces harmful sexual double standard attitudes that have been linked to victim blaming in instances of sexual violence. This promising program adds to a growing number of media and pornography literacy interventions aimed at improving sexual violence prevention and response.

Sexual coercion occurs when a person applies pressure to force another person to have unwanted sex. Yet, sociocultural expectations may also impact women’s sexual consent/refusal behaviors in the absence of partner pressure. We conducted a qualitative meta-synthesis to investigate factors contributing to incongruent sexual decision-making (i.e. internal feelings which are inconsistent with their consent/refusal behaviors) among women from westernized nations. A scoping review of eight databases was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Our search yielded 2,946 articles, with 41 meeting inclusion and quality appraisal criteria. Results revealed sources of incongruent consent/refusal behaviors through five themes: (1) women experience communication barriers, (2) women internalize relationship norms and prioritize men, (3) women experience situational pressure, (4) women experience a fear of sexual violence, and (5) women manage a double bind of sexual behavior. We propose a novel concept to understand sociocultural factors influencing people’s consent/refusal behaviors that are incongruent with their internal feelings, labeled internalized sociocultural sexual pressure (ISSP). We conceptualize ISSP as a framework for internalizing sociocultural norms to a degree that they are influential or may even feel coercive, resulting in a spectrum of sexual consent/refusal behaviors, like acquiescing to unwanted sex and declining wanted sex. The intensity of ISSP experiences can vary significantly; some people may perceive these pressures as mild, whereas others may experience them to a degree that they feel coercive. Teens commonly use the internet for seeking information about sex and sexual relationships, particularly in the absence of comprehensive sex education from offline sources. The social media platform, Reddit, has become a popular forum for teens seeking information about sex from peers, due to its culture of anonymity. To explore teens’ use of Reddit for this purpose, we asked: What advice/information about sexual behaviors are teens seeking out on Reddit? We performed qualitative content analysis with secondary, publicly available social media posts (n = 180) from a large community on Reddit (r/teenrelationships) designed for teens to ask questions about relationships. Five primary, non-mutually exclusive categories of advice/information were identified, with 26 subcategories: 1) Sexual issues within their relationship (42%; e.g., differences in desire, past trauma); 2) Identifying/responding to “red flag” or abusive behaviors (41%; e.g., sexual coercion, harassment); 3) Responding to cheating or jealousy issues (27%; e.g., partners’ past sexual behaviors; porn use); 4) Making decisions about having sex (19%; e.g., timing, anxiety over first time); and 5) General sex education (10%; e.g., concerns about being pregnant). AbstractSocial support impacts abortion accessibility, yet research assessing the public’s willingness to provide abortion-related support is limited. Through an online survey of U.S. adults, we investigated associations between abortion attitudes and abortion-related helping intentions using multinomial logistic regression. Most participants were willing to offer some form of support. Emotional support intentions did not vary across attitudes; however, nuance emerged in willingness to provide other support. Participants with conservative attitudes were more likely to offer “no support” whereas participants with permissive attitudes were more likely to offer instrumental support. In this study, we developed and psychometrically evaluated the Online Sexual Objectification Experiences Scale (OSOES). We collected data from 816 emerging adult college women across two samples. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses revealed three factors: Unwanted Sexual Advances (example item: "How often have you received unwanted messages online asking about your sexual experience?"), Negative Appearance Commentary (example item: "How often has another person insulted you by calling you unattractive online?"), and Indirect Sexual Objectification (example item: "How often have you read a sexual comment posted to a photo of another woman's body online?"). OSOES scores were internally consistent and were strongly correlated with scores of self-objectification, body surveillance, and body shame. OSOES subscale scores also provided evidence of incremental validity in predicting self-objectification and objectified body consciousness above and beyond offline interpersonal sexual objectification. We hope that findings from the present study and the OSOES can be used by researchers, clinicians, and educators to understand the frequency of online sexual objectification experiences among women and as a result, work to mitigate harmful outcomes. A focus on promoting sexual health and preventing sexual violence remains largely unaddressed in most evidence-based parenting prevention programmes, despite the promise of success in addressing these topics after foundational parenting practices have been strengthened. The primary objective of this study was to understand how Mexican family and gender values shape the way families in Mexico City approach discussion of sexual health and violence with their adolescent children. The goal was to inform the development of a culturally relevant sexual health promotion and violence prevention module to add to an existing parenting intervention. During focus groups with 17 mothers and 3 fathers who had recently completed a parenting intervention, five major themes were identified: mediating messages from the outside world; the view that dads are not part of sex education; the belief that romantic relationships spell trouble; gender differences in responsibility and fear; and comfort talking about condoms. Findings indicate that caregivers adopt different approaches to education about sexual health and the prevention of sexual violence according to whether their adolescent is a boy or a girl. These differential approaches were primarily informed by cultural and contextual influences. Strategies for more overtly addressing gender relations in parenting interventions for sexual health promotion and violence prevention are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As a result of the consistent sexual objectification of women across cultures, theorists have noted women objectifying themselves. Given the dehumanizing aspects of self-objectification, this process threatens the holistic development of the self. The present cross-sectional survey study examined how self-objectification is related to sexual subjectivity and identity exploration, among emerging adult women. We found that self-objectification negatively impacts the self-concept domains of self-esteem and sexual subjectivity. Self-esteem was found to mediate the association between self-objectification and identity exploration. Our results draw attention to the detrimental outcomes of self-objectification, highlighting the potential for educators and practitioners to aid young women in examining their self-concept within our broader culture to ensure a healthy trajectory of development of the self.
