The state of Acre, in the Brazilian Amazon, has 18 forest typologies, eight of which have bamboo (Guadua spp.) as the main or secondary floristic element in their understory. Few studies were able to detail changes in forest typologies in which bamboo is the dominant species, caused by bamboo. The present work evaluated the extent and detailed the types of damage caused by bamboo (Guadua weberbaueri Pilg.) in arboreal individuals found in a fragment of Open Rain Forest with bamboo (G. weberbaueri) dominant in the understory located in the eastern region of Acre and discuss the implications for logging. For this purpose, three plots measuring 50 x 100 m were installed along a 1000 m transect, 300 m apart. Bamboo caused damage in 32% of the individuals evaluated (DBH ≥ 2 cm). The most frequent types of damage were “shoring” (44.74% of the total sampled) and “breakage” (37.55%). The confirmation that the presence of bamboo causes damage to arboreal individuals, compromising the density, volume and quality of their bole, has implications for the sustainable exploitation of wood in forests in which it is present and will demand the development of practices management to mitigate the negative impacts observed.
Although sustainable forest management has become a consensus in recent years, many issues regarding its sustainability are still present. Forest management can generate short-term and long-term effects, ranging from changes in forest microclimate, soil compaction and erosion to changes in floristic composition. On the other hand, areas impacted by logging can be an important microsite for shade-intolerant, commercially valuable, species. To better understand how the forest responds to this activity, the present study aimed to evaluate logging effects on the natural regeneration of tree species considering different levels of disturbance along a chronosequence of areas logged in the Antimary State Forest, in the state of Acre - Brazil. Natural regeneration was evaluated through plots established in Annual Production Unit (APU), one, four and eight years since logging, considering the different levels of impacts generated by this activity, where natural regeneration comprised all tree individuals with a minimum height of 50 cm and 10 cm of diameter at breast height (DBH). Areas not directly affected by logging were used as controls. Canopy opening data and soil data were also collected obtained for the analysis of light availability and soil physical characteristics. The areas disturbed by logging and the frequency and distribution of gaps were quantified using LiDAR data. No significant differences were observed regarding total natural regeneration density at different disturbance levels for all analyzed ages (p ≥ 0.08). Pioneer species displayed a high relative density in environments with high disturbance levels, for all analyzed years (p < 0.001). The floristic composition in areas one year since logging was different from forest areas not directly affected by this activity (p = 0.022). Eight years after logging, species diversity differed only in environments with high disturbance (p = 0.00). Three years after logging, the mortality rate was higher in environments displaying a high level of disturbance (p < 0.001), which was also observed for growth rates (p < 0.001). However, no significant differences were observed in recruitment rates in areas displaying different levels of disturbance (p > 0.46). Four years after logging, the canopy openness did not exceed 10% and the areas did not present significant differences (p ≥ 0,69). Although differences in soil bulk density were observed in the early years, these differences disappeared since eight years of logging (p > 0.50). The area percentages directly affected by logging ranged from 7.0 to 8.6%, while felling gaps represented the highest percentage of disturbance (3.0 - 3.7%). No significant differences in the frequency and distribution of gaps before and after logging (p = 0.25) and among APU (p = 0.25) were observed. Results indicate that the disturbances produced by logging were temporary, and that, after eight years, a good part of the evaluated characteristics, such as seedling density, floristic composition, soil physical conditions and canopy opening, returned to their previous stage.

The PREDICTS project—Projecting Responses of Ecological Diversity In Changing Terrestrial Systems (www.predicts.org.uk)—has collated from published studies a large, reasonably representative database of comparable samples of biodiversity from multiple sites that differ in the nature or intensity of human impacts relating to land use. We have used this evidence base to develop global and regional statistical models of how local biodiversity responds to these measures. We describe and make freely available this 2016 release of the database, containing more than 3.2 million records sampled at over 26,000 locations and representing over 47,000 species. We outline how the database can help in answering a range of questions in ecology and conservation biology. To our knowledge, this is the largest and most geographically and taxonomically representative database of spatial comparisons of biodiversity that has been collated to date; it will be useful to researchers and international efforts wishing to model and understand the global status of biodiversity.

- Abstract
Biodiversity continues to decline in the face of increasing anthropogenic pressures such as habitat destruction, exploitation, pollution and introduction of alien species. Existing global databases of species’ threat status or population time series are dominated by charismatic species. The collation of datasets with broad taxonomic and biogeographic extents, and that support computation of a range of biodiversity indicators, is necessary to enable better understanding of historical declines and to project – and avert – future declines. We describe and assess a new database of more than 1.6 million samples from 78 countries representing over 28,000 species, collated from existing spatial comparisons of local-scale biodiversity exposed to different intensities and types of anthropogenic pressures, from terrestrial sites around the world. The database contains measurements taken in 208 (of 814) ecoregions, 13 (of 14) biomes, 25 (of 35) biodiversity hotspots and 16 (of 17) megadiverse countries. The database contains more than 1% of the total number of all species described, and more than 1% of the described species within many taxonomic groups – including flowering plants, gymnosperms, birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, beetles, lepidopterans and hymenopterans. The dataset, which is still being added to, is therefore already considerably larger and more representative than those used by previous quantitative models of biodiversity trends and responses. The database is being assembled as part of the PREDICTS project (Projecting Responses of Ecological Diversity In Changing Terrestrial Systems – www.predicts.org.uk). We make site-level summary data available alongside this article. The full database will be publicly available in 2015.

- Abstract
The PREDICTS project-Projecting Responses of Ecological Diversity In Changing Terrestrial Systems (www.predicts.org.uk)-has collated from published studies a large, reasonably representative database of comparable samples of biodiversity from multiple sites that differ in the nature or intensity of human impacts relating to land use.

This dataset contains site-level summaries of more than 1.6 million samples from 78 countries representing over 28,000 species, collated from existing spatial comparisons of local-scale biodiversity exposed to different intensities and types of anthropogenic pressures, from terrestrial sites around the world. The underlying database is being assembled as part of the [PREDICTS project](https://www.nhm.ac.uk/our-science/our-work/biodiversity/predicts.html) - Projecting Responses of Ecological Diversity In Changing Terrestrial Systems. A complete description of the data is given in [https://doi.org/10.1002/ece3.1303](https://doi.org/10.1002/ece3.1303).

© 2014 The Authors. Ecology and Evolution published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd. Biodiversity continues to decline in the face of increasing anthropogenic pressures such as habitat destruction, exploitation, pollution and introduction of alien species. Existing global databases of species' threat status or population time series are dominated by charismatic species. The collation of datasets with broad taxonomic and biogeographic extents, and that support computation of a range of biodiversity indicators, is necessary to enable better understanding of historical declines and to project - and avert - future declines. The database contains more than 1% of the total number of all species described, and more than 1% of the described species within many taxonomic groups - including flowering plants, gymnosperms, birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, beetles, lepidopterans and hymenopterans. The dataset, which is still being added to, is therefore already considerably larger and more representative than those used by previous quantitative models of biodiversity trends and responses. The database is being assembled as part of the PREDICTS project (Projecting Responses of Ecological Diversity In Changing Terrestrial Systems - www.predicts.org.uk). We make site-level summary data available alongside this article. The full database will be publicly available in 2015. The collation of biodiversity datasets with broad taxonomic and biogeographic extents is necessary to understand historical declines and to project - and hopefully avert - future declines. We describe a newly collated database of more than 1.6 million biodiversity measurements from 78 countries representing over 28,000 species, collated from existing spatial comparisons of local-scale biodiversity exposed to different intensities and types of anthropogenic pressures, from terrestrial sites around the world.

This study compares the composition and structure of palm communities in fragments of secondary and primary forest within the Raimundo Irineu Serra Environmental Protection Area (APARIS), located at the urban perimeter of Rio Branco, Acre. To evaluate the palm communities, we selected secondary forest areas belonging to three distinct successional stages: 7.5 years; 27.5 years, 37.5 years, and a primary forest fragment. In each forest type we installed five 20 x 20 m plots, where we analyzed floristic composition, vegetation structure, and population demography of all palm species (Arecaceae). In all, we identified 1034 palm individuals, including 12 genera, 19 species. Primary forest exhibited the greatest palm diversity. Structural analysis of each area revealed a scarcity of seedlings (≤ 50 cm tall) and reproductive adults. Fragmentation altered the composition and decreased the richness and diversity of palms within the APARIS, while at the same time, favoring the dominance of certain species, such as A. phalerata.

Open forests dominated by semi-scandent woody bamboos of the genus Guadua Kunth. are found in the southwest Amazon as a mosaic of patches, each being 102 to 104 km2 in size. Each patch is a single population of semelparous plants with a synchronized life cycle. The individuals flower and fruit only once in their lifetime then die, opening canopy space for the new cohort of juveniles that will gradually regain dominance of the forest canopy. At the adult stage, areas dominated by Guadua can be detected on images captured by orbital sensors equipped with bands in the optical portion of the spectrum. Adult bamboo patches exhibit a spectral pattern similar to that of secondary forests, distinct from the darker areas covered by forest without bamboo or with juvenile bamboo still confined to the forest understory. The short post-reproductive stage is also spectrally distinct due to the leafless sunlit stems of dead bamboo. This study examined temporal and spatial patterns in the spectral behavior of Guadua populations over their life cycle in the southwest Amazon, using images acquired by optical orbital sensors between 1975 and 2008. The sensors were LANDSAT Multispectral Scanner (MSS), LANDSAT Thematic Mapper (TM), Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM+) and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS). To describe the spectral pattern of bamboo at different life stages, reflectance values for populations of different ages were obtained from the MODIS sensor. Product 43B4 was chosen as it provides atmosphere-free reflectance adjusted to emulate nadir view and solar angles, thus removing most confounding artifacts. Temporal mosaics of MODIS 43B4 for the prior 16 days are produced every 8 days. For each year, one mosaic was chosen, being that with the least cloud and haze over the SW Amazon. Three images were used, one from each year 2001, 2002 and 2003. Cloud contamination prevented collecting reflectances from mosaics for the years 2004 to 2008. Changes with the age of a bamboo population are reported for all seven optical MODIS bands and for the vegetation indices NDVI and EVI. Ages were determined by finding mortality patches in over 200 LANDSAT and MODIS images from 1975 to 2002. As expected, the two MODIS bands located on the near-infrared plateau of a typical green leaf spectrum, showed the greatest absolute differences in reflectance between the different life stages. EVI showed greater sensitivity than did NDVI for distinguishing different ages of bamboo. All life stages had a spectral pattern typical of healthy green leaves, indicating that even during a mortality event the bamboo-dominated forest is actually dominated by trees with green leaves. Despite filtering bad pixels, consistent biases (possible processing errors in the product) were found between the three best images of MODIS product 43B4. Length of the bamboo life cycle was estimated by two methods. First, repeated mortality events in the same geographic patch were observed directly, by examining over 200 LANDSAT images of the SW Amazon from 1975 to 2008 and annual MODIS 43B4 images from 2001 to 2008. Life cycles of 27 and 28 years were found. Second, the life cycle was inferred for all populations within a 34,000 km2 area that had almost no man-caused deforestation. Patches with bamboo dominant in the forest canopy were mapped within this area for 21 different dates spanning 1975–2008. The pair of maps with highest spatial congruence was taken to be one life cycle apart in time. This method gave a life cycle of 28 years. The final question examined was whether separate bamboo populations time their flowering events independently from their neighbors. Because these populations do not share genes, no relationship is expected to be found between proximity in time and proximity in space, for the flowering of different populations. Flowering itself is not visible, so all post-reproductive dieback events were mapped using the annual wall-to-wall MODIS coverage of the SW Amazon for 2001-2008. Reproductive events of each patch (each population) occurred in a highly contagious fashion, forming super-patches of temporally clustered events. A possible explanation for the shared genetic knowledge between several contiguous populations may be a succession of derivations from a single ancestral population, a process similar to allochronic speciation. One flowering wave was also observed, i.e., contiguous patches flowering like falling dominoes. But most temporally and spatially proximal flowering events did not occur in this fashion.

We map the extent, infer the life-cycle length and describe spatial and temporal patterns of flowering of sarmentose bamboos (Guadua spp) in upland forests of the southwest Amazon. We first examine the spectra and the spectral separation of forests with different bamboo life stages. False-color composites from orbital sensors going back to 1975 are capable of distinguishing life stages. These woody bamboos flower produce massive quantities of seeds and then die. Life stage is synchronized, forming a single cohort within each population. Bamboo dominates at least 161,500 km² of forest, coincident with an area of recent or ongoing tectonic uplift, rapid mechanical erosion and poorly drained soils rich in exchangeable cations. Each bamboo population is confined to a single spatially continuous patch or to a core patch with small outliers. Using spatial congruence between pairs of mature-stage maps from different years, we estimate an average life cycle of 27-28 y. It is now possible to predict exactly where and approximately when new bamboo mortality events will occur. We also map 74 bamboo populations that flowered between 2001 and 2008 over the entire domain of bamboodominated forest. Population size averaged 330 km². Flowering events of these populations are temporally and/or spatially separated, restricting or preventing gene exchange. Nonetheless, adjacent populations flower closer in time than expected by chance, forming flowering waves. This may be a consequence of allochronic divergence from fewer ancestral populations and suggests a long history of widespread bamboo in the southwest Amazon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To our knowledge, this is the largest and most geographically and taxonomically representative database of spatial comparisons of biodiversity that has been collated to date; it will be useful to researchers and international efforts wishing to model and understand the global status of biodiversity.

land use ,Data sharing ,14. Life underwater ,15. Life on land ,global change ,habitat destruction - Abstract
The database is being assembled as part of the PREDICTS project (Projecting Responses of Ecological Diversity In Changing Terrestrial Systems - http://www.predicts.org.uk). We make site-level summary data available alongside this article. The full database will be publicly available in 2015.

Source at https://doi.org/10.1002/ece3.2579.

Existing global databases of species' threat status or population time series are dominated by charismatic species. The collation of datasets with broad taxonomic and biogeographic extents, and that support computation of a range of biodiversity indicators, is necessary to enable better understanding of historical declines and to project - and avert - future declines. The database is being assembled as part of the PREDICTS project (Projecting Responses of Ecological Diversity In Changing Terrestrial Systems - http://www.predicts.org.uk). We make site-level summary data available alongside this article. The full database will be publicly available in 2015.
