Abstract

Oxygen isotopes in biogenic silica (δ18OBSi) from lake sediments allow for quantitative reconstruction of past hydroclimate and proxy-model comparison in terrestrial environments. The signals of individual records have been attributed to different factors, such as air temperature (Tair), atmospheric circulation patterns, hydrological changes, and lake evaporation. While every lake has its own local set of drivers of δ18O variability, here we explore the extent to which regional or even global signals emerge from a series of paleoenvironmental records. This study provides a comprehensive compilation and combined statistical evaluation of the existing lake sediment δ18OBSi records, largely missing in other summary publications (i.e. PAGES network). For this purpose, we have identified and compiled 71 down-core records published to date and complemented these datasets with additional lake basin parameters (e.g. lake water residence time and catchment size) to best characterize the signal properties. Records feature widely different temporal coverage and resolution, ranging from decadal-scale records covering the past 150 years to records with multi-millennial-scale resolution spanning glacial–interglacial cycles. The best coverage in number of records (N = 37) and data points (N = 2112) is available for Northern Hemispheric (NH) extratropical regions throughout the Holocene (roughly corresponding to Marine Isotope Stage 1; MIS 1). To address the different variabilities and temporal offsets, records were brought to a common temporal resolution by binning and subsequently filtered for hydrologically open lakes with lake water residence times < 100 years. For mid- to high-latitude (> 45° N) lakes, we find common δ18OBSi patterns among the lake records during both the Holocene and Common Era (CE). These include maxima and minima corresponding to known climate episodes, such as the Holocene Thermal Maximum (HTM), Neoglacial Cooling, Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA) and the Little Ice Age (LIA). These patterns are in line with long-term air temperature changes supported by previously published climate reconstructions from other archives, as well as Holocene summer insolation changes. In conclusion, oxygen isotope records from NH extratropical lake sediments feature a common climate signal at centennial (for CE) and millennial (for Holocene) timescales despite stemming from different lakes in different geographic locations and hence constitute a valuable proxy for past climate reconstructions. International audience; La gestion des ressources de haute montagne du pourtour méditerranéen est d’une importance majeure pour les sociétés aussi bien pour l’approvisionnement en eau que la gestion des risques environnementaux. Les changements climatiques actuels montrent un réchauffement plus rapide en haute altitude et dans la région méditerranéenne que la moyenne globale (+2°C par rapport aux niveaux préindustriels).Le projet Hydro-ALPS a pour but de fournir de nouveaux enregistrements paléoclimatiques continus afin d’aider à la réalisation de modèles climatiques régionaux intégrant des échelles de temps longs. Les interactions étroites entre les activités humaines, l’évolution du climat et l’occurrence d’événements extrêmes, comme l’événement climatique à 4200 cal BP (Cartier et al. 2019), seront également approfondies. Pour cela, les sédiments lacustres de deux lacs, situés à la même altitude (2200 m a.s.l.) dans le massif du Mercantour, mais entourés d’un couvert végétal différent (pâturages versus végétation plus boisée) vont être étudiés de façon pluridisciplinaire (sédimentologie, géochimie, palynologie). L’accent sera mis sur l’utilisation des diatomées, organismes microscopiques siliceux abondants dans ces lacs. L’étude de leurs assemblages et composition isotopique (O et Si) permettra de reconstituer les variations du bilan hydrique et de l’érosion chimique des sols et du socle cristallin.Ce poster présente les objectifs du projet Hydro-ALPS ainsi que les résultats d’une première mission de carottage (septembre 2022) au lac Petit (Valdeblore, France) qui a permis d’obtenir une séquence sédimentaire de 7 m de long avec sections de recouvrement. Les sédiments sont de type « diatomite » sur une majorité de l’enregistrement et la sédimentation caractéristique à l’échelle régionale sur les 30 premiers cm - i.e. sédiments fins bleutés ponctués de lamines noires - permet de penser que la séquence remonte à la fin de la déglaciation. Le cadre chronologique des différentes unités lithologiques sera déterminé par des analyses 14C sur des macrorestes d’origine terrestre. In fine, ces enregistrements paléoclimatiques à haute résolution pourront être comparés à des évolutions/perturbations majeures documentées dans les sociétés du pourtour méditerranéen.

Abstract

This paper presents the first Lateglacial/Holocene (the last 13 500 cal a bp) ostracod δ18O record to infer hydroclimate variability in the Southern French Alps. Cytherissa lacustris (δ18Osp) shells extracted from the sediments of Lake Allos allowed a reconstruction of δ18Olake water (δ18Olw) except for the interval 5800–2800 cal a bp. The shape of the Younger Dryas (YD) clearly differed from records documented in the northern Alps. First, δ18Olw values remained close to modern values before a marked drop ca. 12 000 cal a bp. Then, after several oscillations, δ18Olw values increased, reaching the highest value of the record ca. 6100 cal a bp during a thermal optimum for this latitude. Finally, low δ18Olw values occurred from 450 to 100 cal a bp during the Little Ice Age (LIA) following the Medieval Climate anomaly. At the beginning of the YD, δ18Olw probably reflected changes in local glacier dynamics and precipitation sources. The following decrease in δ18Olw values was associated with higher freshwater inputs during the second half of the YD. During the LIA, the low δ18O values are consistent with a higher torrential activity and lower air temperatures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In the Mediterranean area, the 4.2 ka BP event is recorded with contrasting expressions between regions. In the southern Alps, the high-altitude Lake Petit (Mercantour Massif, France; 2200 a.s.l.) offers pollen and diatom-rich sediments covering the last 4800 years. A multi-proxy analysis recently revealed a detrital pulse around 4200 cal BP due to increasing erosion in the lake catchment. The involvement of a rapid climate change leading to increasing runoff and soil erosion was proposed. Here, in order to clarify this hypothesis, we measured the oxygen isotope composition of diatom silica frustules (delta O-18(diatom)) from the same sedimentary core. Diatoms were analysed by laser fluorination isotope ratio mass spectrometry after an inert gas flow dehydration. We additionally enhanced the accuracy of the age-depth model using the Bacon R package. The delta O-18(diatom) record allows us to identify a 500-year time lapse, from 4400 to 3900 cal BP, where delta O-18(diatom) reached its highest values (> 31 parts per thousand). delta O-18(diatom) was about 3 parts per thousand higher than the modern values and the shifts at 4400 and 3900 cal BP were of similar amplitude as the seasonal delta O-18(diatom) shifts occurring today. This period of high delta O-18(diatom) values can be explained by the intensification of O-18-enriched Mediterranean precipitation events feeding the lake during the ice-free season. This agrees with other records from the southern Alps suggesting runoff intensification around 4200 cal BP. Possible changes in other climatic parameters may have played a concomitant role, including a decrease in the contribution of O-18-depleted Atlantic winter precipitation to the lake water due to snow deficit. Data recording the 4.2 ka BP event in the northwestern Mediterranean area are still sparse. In the Lake Petit watershed, the 4.2 ka BP event translated into a change in precipitation regime from 4400 to 3900 cal BP. This record contributes to the recent efforts to characterize and investigate the geographical extent of the 4.2 ka BP event in the Mediterranean area.

Abstract

The Mediterranean region and the Levant have returned some of the clearest evidence of a climatically dry period occurring around 4200 years ago. However, some regional evidence is controversial and contradictory, and issues remain regarding timing, progression, and regional articulation of this event. In this paper, we review the evidence from selected proxies (sea-surface temperature, precipitation, and temperature reconstructed from pollen, δ18O on speleothems, and δ18O on lacustrine carbonate) over the Mediterranean Basin to infer possible regional climate patterns during the interval between 4.3 and 3.8 ka. The values and limitations of these proxies are discussed, and their potential for furnishing information on seasonality is also explored. Despite the chronological uncertainties, which are the main limitations for disentangling details of the climatic conditions, the data suggest that winter over the Mediterranean involved drier conditions, in addition to already dry summers. However, some exceptions to this prevail – where wetter conditions seem to have persisted – suggesting regional heterogeneity in climate patterns. Temperature data, even if sparse, also suggest a cooling anomaly, even if this is not uniform. The most common paradigm to interpret the precipitation regime in the Mediterranean – a North Atlantic Oscillation-like pattern – is not completely satisfactory to interpret the selected data.

Abstract

Poster; Ancient human presence in the mountain landscapes of the Alps has been documented by archaeological and palaeoecological studies which show a change from gathering to pastoralism over the last 4 ka. Above 2000 m, landscapes have been exploited at least since the Bronze Age. Human activities rendered soils vulnerable to colluviation, increasing erodibility and erosivity. Most studies on long-term soil erosion have focused on gullying and hillslope erosion especially at lower altitudes. In mountain areas, well-dated deposits are scarce. Lake sediments are therefore a valuable landscape archive because they record a broad range of proxies responding to changes in slope stability and vegetation cover. We present high-resolution multiproxies interpretations of a cored profile from the Alpine Mediterranean Lake Petit covering the last 5 ka. Sedimentological, geochemical and botanical data from this core document weathering and erosion in relation to vegetation dynamics, climatic fluctuations and human activities. Lake Petit has recorded since 4770 cal. BP continuity of anthropogenic taxa identified by nitrate enrichment of Alpine grassland. Even though discrete, grazing activities were already extant at this time but did not lead to significant soil erosion. The first increase in anthropogenic taxa occurred at 3000 cal. BP, concomitant with an increase in Ericaceae and intensification of erosion. Soils, without tree protection and probably altered by domestic livestock, were frequently eroded. Four important detrital pulsations occurred synchronously with depletion in tree pollen, while pollen from anthropogenic-related taxa increased. Reported archaeological sites and mining activities also show the presence of Humans in the Lake Petit catchment at 1800 cal. BP and 500 cal. BP, respectively. Widespread deforestation occurred, probably to maintain Alpine pastures and to supply fuel for smelting, contributing to the continuity of anthropogenic landscape perturbation.

36. Diatom-oxygen isotopic record from high-altitude Petit Lake (2200 m a.s.l) in the Mediterranean Alps: shedding light on a climatic pulse.

Abstract

The 4.2 kyrs event, used as a marker of holocene stratigraphy, has been described as a rapid climate change in the northern hemisphere triggering droughts in the Mediterranean region. However, the severity and geographical extent of this event are still the subject of investigation considering the small number of palaeoclimatic records for this time period, and the presence of contrasted climatic expressions between areas. At Petit Lake (France, Mediterranean Alps, 2200 m a.s.l) a multiproxy study of Holocene lake sediments has revealed major changes in erosion processes and phytoplanktonic assemblages in the lake ecosystem around 4200 cal. BP. According to pollen analysis, deforestation is unlikely to be the main explanation of environmental changes as the watershed was covered by open vegetation for the duration of the study period. To test the implication of climate, our study presents an analysis of oxygen isotopes (δ18O) in diatoms describing hydrological modalities during the 4.2 kyrs event in the Mediterranean Alps. The highest values of δ18Odiatom occur from 4400 to 3900 cal. BP and are interpreted as an increase in water evaporation and/or a decrease in freshwater inputs to the lake system. Changes in water balance might have been associated with a change in precipitation sources towards a greater influence of precipitation coming from the Mediterranean area. These results are concomitant to an increase in erosion in the watershed and high representation of very low-dispersal pollen in the sediments suggesting the presence of intense runoff. This new isotopic record together with previously-published proxy-data, allows us to describe the 4.2 kyrs event at Petit Lake as an increase in Mediterranean climate influences in the region, amounting to a general dry period punctuated by episodes of intense runoff occurring on the catchment slopes. Abstract

Archaeological studies carried out in the European Alps have documented ancient human occupation of mountains, characterized by hunting, pastoral activities and mining. High resolution multi-proxy analyses, including sedimentological, palynological and geochemical investigations, were carried out on a 144 cm-long sediment core from the Lac Petit (2200m, Mediterranean French Alps) in order to reconstruct past interactions between humans, the environment and the climate over the last 5000 years. Three main phases were identified, evidencing a progressive destabilization of the local environment. The first phase (ca. 4800 to 4300 cal. BP) is characterized by a relatively stable environmental conditions, as attested by a high lake productivity with the deposition of pure diatomite, the local presence of trees (conifer stomata, macro-remains), and well developed soils on slopes. The second phase (ca. 4300 to 1500 cal. BP) corresponds to a drastic decrease in arboreal pollen abundance, interpreted as the result of deforestation. In the same time, the lake geochemical record highlights an abrupt switch in sediment source marked by an input of terrestrial organic and mineral matters. Regular occurrences of anthropogenic pollen assemblages suggest early pastoral activity in the lake vicinity, while wetter conditions may have triggered hillslopes destabilization. The most recent phase (since ca. 1500 cal. BP) is marked by a degradation of the environment: the lake productivity dramatically decreased contemporaneously with the fall of the proportion of arboreal pollen. The highest values of anthropogenic pollen taxa and the highest concentrations of lead and mercury are recorded. Abundant terrigenous inputs also suggest that high-intensity rainfall events might have occurred, while agro-pastoralism and local mining activities continuously weakened the slopes. Even if the climate could have triggered such drastic changes, a discreet but continuous human impact since 1550 cal.BP might be the main factor of slopes degradation and ecosystem destabilization in the catchment.
