We compute the axial vector current, form factor, and coupling for quarks in the instanton liquid model with two light flavors. Non-local current corrections are derived, as required by the effective 't Hooft interaction. We obtain a pion-mediated axial form factor and an axial coupling which, when simply applied in the non-relativistic limit for constituent quarks, matches the experimental value to within a few percent, both in and out of the chiral limit., Comment: 8 pages Revtex4, 3 PostScript figures, sign error corrected (results unchanged)

We consider forced tunneling in QCD, described semiclassically by instanton-antiinstanton field configurations. By separating topologically different minima we obtain details of the effective potential and study the turning states, which are similar to the sphaleron solution in electroweak theory. These states are alternatively derived as minima of the energy under the constraints of fixed size and Chern-Simons number. We study, both analytically and numerically, the subsequent evolution of such states by solving the classical Yang-Mills equations in real time, and find that the gauge field strength is quickly localized into an expanding shell of radiating gluons. We phenomenologically study whether partonic collisions responsible for the growth of hadron-hadron cross sections at high energy can be ascribed to instanton-induced processes. Although non-perturbative in nature, these interactions occur at the semi-hard scale $Q\sim 1-2$ GeV, and should therefore be described using information from deep inelastic leptonic scattering on the partonic constituents in nucleons, pions, and photons. After considering shadowing corrections in nucleon-nucleon scattering, we fix a free instanton tail suppression parameter and determine the effective quark-quark cross section. The resulting contributions to $NN$, $\pi N$, $\gamma N$, and $\gamma\gamma$ cross sections all $increase$ with energy differently, but in reasonable agreement with experimental data. We then proceed to an estimate of the number of such processes present in high energy Au-Au collisions at RHIC, finding that the amount of entropy produced by instanton/sphaleron events matches the observed amount., Comment: 7 pages RevTeX4, 1 .eps figure

If quark matter exists in the cores of neutron stars, it is most likely color superconducting. Thus a phase transition from free to paired quark matter might occur during the first minute of proto-neutron star evolution. Using a chirally invariant effective Lagrangian, we calculate the density and isospin dependences of the in-medium axial coupling, $g_A^*$, in spatially uniform matter present in core collapse supernovae and neutron stars. The quenching of $g_A^*$ with density in matter with different proton fractions is found to be similar. However, our results suggest that the quenching of the nucleon's $g_A^*$ in matter with hyperons is likely to be significantly greater than in matter with nucleons only., Comment: 4 pages revtex, 2 eps figures

We consider the $N_c\to\infty$ limit of QCD using a toy model in which instantons exchange color-singlet scalar fields which do not self-interact. Our main observation is that collective attraction leads the formation of large clusters containing $O(N_c)$ nonperturbative objects. We further show that this clustering of instantons is limited due to a non-trivial repulsion inherent in the ADHM multi-instanton solution. As a result the vacuum is very different from that at low $N_c$, notably being more inhomogeneous, in ways which will affect chiral symmetry breaking of light quarks. Color superconductivity in QCD breaks the SU(3) color gauge group down to SU(2), inducing masses in five of the eight gluons. This is a dynamical Higgs effect, in which the diquark condensate acts as the vacuum expectation value of a composite scalar field. In order to analyze this effect at low quark density, when gaps are large and generated nonperturbatively, we use instanton-induced quark interactions augmented with gauge-invariant interactions between quarks and perturbative gluons. The five gluon masses are found from the static limit of the relevant polarization operators, in which transversality is maintained via the Nambu-Goldstone modes of broken color symmetry. Working in the microscopic theory we calculate these masses to one-loop order and estimate their density dependence. We consider an effective Lagrangian containing contributions from glueball and gluon degrees of freedom with a scale-invariant coupling between the two. The thermodynamic potential is calculated taking into account thermal fluctuations of both fields. The glueball mean field dominates at low temperature, while the high temperature phase is governed by low-mass gluon-like excitations. The model shows some similarities to the lattice results in the pure glue sector of QCD. In particular, it exhibits a strong first order phase transition at a critical temperature of approximately 265 MeV when reasonable parameters are taken., Comment: Contains an expanded discussion of the results. We study the finite temperature properties of an effective chiral Lagrangian which describes nuclear matter. Thermal fluctuations in both the nucleon and the meson fields are considered. The logarithmic and square root terms in the effective potential are evaluated by expansion and resummation with the result written in terms of the exponential integral and the error function, respectively. In the absence of explicit chiral symmetry breaking a phase transition restores the symmetry, but when the pion has a mass the transition is smooth. We investigate the finite temperature behavior of the meson sector of an effective Lagrangian which describes nuclear matter. A method is developed for evaluating the logarithmic terms in the effective potential which involves expansion and resummation; the result is written in terms of the exponential integral. In the absence of explicit chiral symmetry breaking, a phase transition restores the symmetry at a temperature of 190 MeV; when the pion has a mass the transition is smooth.
