In this study, UV-induced (E)-to-(Z) geometrical isomerizations of the curcumin degradation product (E)-dehydrozingerone, along with curcumin-inspired (E)-O-methylated dehydrozingerone and their corresponding C2-symmetric dimers, were investigated. All compounds produced corresponding (Z) isomers in varying yields upon UV irradiation in deuterated solvents. The efficiency of these photoisomerizations depended on the solvent and wavelength used. While (Z) dehydrozingerone and its corresponding (Z)-(Z) dimer proved to be highly unstable during purification, the O-methylated derivatives were successfully isolated, fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy, and further analyzed by UV-Vis spectroscopy and computational methods. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the loss of dopaminergic neurons responsible for unintended or uncontrollable movements. Mutations in the leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 locus contribute to genetic forms of PD. The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster carrying this mutation (LRRK2-Dm) is an in vivo model of PD that develops motor impairment and stands for an eligible non-mammalian paradigm to test novel therapeutic approaches. Dehydrozingerone (DHZ) is a natural phenolic compound isolated from ginger and presents anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and neuroprotective properties, making it a potential therapeutic target for PD. We administered DHZ and its C2-symmetric dimer (DHZ-DIM) at 0.5 and 1 mM for 14 and 21 days in the LRRK2-Dm, with the aim of assessing changes in rescuing motor behavior, brain dopaminergic neurons, mitochondria and synapses (T-bars). The shorter treatment with both molecules revealed efficacy at the higher dose, improving climbing behavior with a prevention of dopaminergic neuronal demise. After 21 days, a recovery of the motor disability, dopaminergic neuron loss, mitochondrial damage and T-bars failure was observed with the DHZ-DIM. Our data indicate that the DHZ-DIM exerts a more potent neuroprotective effect with respect to the monomer in LRRK2-Dm, prompting further investigation of these compounds in rodent models of PD. Potentiometry is the primary pH measurement method, but alternatives are sought beyond glass electrodes operative limitations. In nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments, electrodeless pH sensing is important to track changes along titrations, during chemical reactions or inside compartmentalized environments inaccessible to electrodes, for instance. Although several interesting NMR pH indicators have been already presented, the potential of inorganic phosphate is overlooked, despite its common presence in NMR samples as the buffer main component. Its use for electrodeless pH determination can be expanded by exploiting all its three proton dissociations. This study was aimed at verifying the use of inorganic phosphate 31P chemical shift to sense pH variations, and at exploring the complementary use of pyrophosphate ions to cover a wide pH range. A simple set of equations is presented to utilize both phosphate and pyrophosphate 31P chemical shift in combination for accurate pH determination without a glass electrode over the 5–12 pH range, and without affecting the spectrum of other nuclei. The present study demonstrated an average deviation of 0.09 (maximum <0.2) pH unit from glass electrode measurements. The trimethylphosphate can be used as a suitable chemical shift reference for both 31P and 1H (also 13C), with its hydrolysis being significant only at pH > 12. The method was also demonstrated by determining the pKa of three distinct molecules in a mixture and by comparing the results to those obtained when the glass electrode was used to measure the pH. Mesoporous silica‐based materials are used as sorbents and supports in many fields. The ordered pore architecture of MCM‐41, and the absence of interconnections, make it suitable as a model system. The surface is natively functionalized by many silanol groups, endowing the material with a polar surface to directly interact with the target species or to mount additional functional groups. Either bare or functionalized, surface silanol arrangement is crucial to material performance. In the case of CO2 capture with amine‐functionalized silica, silanol groups are responsible for fundamental H‐bonds during chemisorption, but they also modulate the effect and weight of humidity on the material performance. In addition, the silanol groups can also tune the weight of physisorption over chemisorption. The relationship between these aspects and the textural features of mesostructured silica has not been addressed in detail. In this study, computer models are employed to investigate the adsorption capacity and selectivity of bare mesostructured silica with three different pore sizes. Results are rationalized in terms of silanol surface density and pore curvature. The importance of the energetic inequivalence between Q3 and Q2 sites on the silica surface is emphasized, as this causes adsorption behavior to deviate from ideality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Phenols are a large family of natural and synthetic compounds with known antioxidant activity. The aim of this study was to perform in vitro screening of natural and natural-like phenol monomers and their C2-symmetric dimers (hydroxylated biphenyls) in order to identify those representatives whose pharmacophores have the strongest antioxidant and the lowest prooxidant activity. Material and methods: Antioxidative properties of 36 compounds (monomers and their C2-symmetric dimers) were evaluated in vitro. Different (red/ox) assays were used to measure their total oxidative potential (TOP), their total antioxidative capacity (TAC), the pro-oxidative-antioxidant balance (PAB) and total SH-group content (SHG) in a biologically relevant environment. The Pro-oxidative Score, Antioxidative Score and the Oxy Score were also calculated. Trolox, a water soluble analogue of α-tocopherol, was used as a positive control. Results: In an assay consisting of pooled human serum, 6 of the 36 compounds showed significant antioxidant activity (compounds 6, 7, 12, 13, 26, and 27), whereas 4 showed extremely weak antioxidant activity (compounds 2, 29, 30, and 31). Within the 36 compounds comprising zingerone, dehydrozingerone, aurone, chalcone, and magnolol derivatives, in both monomeric and dimeric forms, the 2 compounds that indicated the highest antioxidant activity were dehydrozingerone derivatives (compounds 6 and 12). Trolox's activity was found between the strong and weak antioxidant compounds analysed in our study. Conclusions: In this study selected dehydrozingerones were identified as good candidates for in-depth testing of their biological behaviour and for possible precursors for synthesis of novel polyphenolic molecules with potential therapeutic applications. Multifunction radars based on active phased arrays are well known and widely studied systems. The concepts of bistatic architecture, conformal array and digital beam forming (DBF) are combined in this paper to define a novel multifunction radar for point defense. The conical shape of the antenna overcomes the significant limitations in the azimuth coverage of 360° of fixed-faces phased arrays due to the beam scanning up to 45°. The usage of separate transmit/receive arrays and the DBF technique adds the operational flexibility and the possibility of multiple simultaneous functions, with an optimal time-energy resources exploitation. After a short description of its technological demonstrator, some significant design trade-off, and operating aspects of the proposed architecture, called d-Radar, are described, showing the main differences with respect to the classical, four faces, and phased-array multifunction radar architecture. It is described how the operating modes can be made more and more similar to a “staring” or “ubiquitous” radar permitting an instantaneous detection and location of short-range, low-elevation targets for sea and ground operations.
