Abstract

This paper presents a case study of corrosion damage of a concrete chimney sited in a steel production plant in front of the Mediterranean Sea. The aggressive environment to which the chimney is exposed and its limited accessibility make the assessment of its condition critical. Destructive and non-destructive tests have been carried out over time to evaluate possible deterioration phenomena of concrete and corrosion of the reinforcement. The available documentation both on the construction and on previous repair interventions, besides the results of several investigations are discussed in the paper with the aim of assessing the chimney and proposing guidelines for the design of a durable and effective repair intervention, in relation with reinforcement corrosion. Results show that it is not possible to identify a single cause of damage, but rather a synergistic effect of corrosion of steel reinforcement due to chlorides ingress and carbonation and a moderate chemical attack of concrete due to exposure to fumes of the plant. Moreover, although the chimney was repaired several times, such interventions, not properly realized, promoted corrosion rather than control it. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper describes the use of a fluidized soil-cement mix to fill a former gypsum-anhydrite mine located in the village of Santa Brigida in Northen Italy. The mine was excavated with the chamber-pillar method on four different levels and it was abandoned several tens of years ago. Two lower levels are flooded and the dissolution of gypsum and anhydrite, consequent to the flow of water inside the tunnels, puts under serious hydrogeological risk the area above the mine. Geological and geotechnical studies found as the most adequate solution to the problem the complete filling of the tunnels with a material with mechanical and physical properties comparable to common properties of soils. Nevertheless, the presence of water with significant concentration of sulfate ions inside the tunnels has required a specific study in order to define both an appropriate filling material and the technology to introduce it in the tunnels. The results of laboratory studies to develop and characterize the flowable soil-cement are summarized and a pilot work is described. The use of seawater for mixing concrete for reinforced concrete structures is prohibited, since it can promote steel corrosion. However, the use of seawater would contribute to decrease the environmental impact of concrete, in particular in those regions of the world where potable water is a precious resource. The project SEACON-INFRAVATION between University of Miami and Politecnico di Milano, with various industrial partners, aims at investigating the use of seawater for the construction of sustainable and durable reinforced concrete structures and infrastructures. Within the project, that included a vast campaign of laboratory tests, also two demo projects – one in Italy and another one in the US – were designed and executed with the aim of testing the technology on-site and allowing long-term monitoring of the durability behavior. In Italy, a reinforced concrete culvert was built next to A1 motorway, close to Piacenza. The culvert collects the waters coming from the roadway that, during winter season, is subjected to de-icing salts; in addition, it is unsheltered from the rain and exposed to wetting and drying cycles. The culvert is divided into different segments, and each segment is representative of a given scenario in terms of type of concrete and type of reinforcement. Besides a reference segment, with carbon steel and chloride-free concrete, some segments were built using seawater concrete in combination with corrosion-resistant reinforcement. Three types of corrosion-resistant reinforcement were considered: an austenitic grade of stainless steel (1.4311), a duplex grade of stainless steel (1.4362) and GFRP. The corrosion conditions of the metallic reinforcements are monitored by means of potential measurements. The electrical resistivity of concrete is also measured in time, and the evolution of carbonation and chloride penetration are periodically analysed on concrete cores taken from the culvert. Abstract

In Europe, stainless steel rebars have been used since the mid-80s, whilst in North America, their use has been progressively growing only since the mid-90s. Due to their higher resistance to corrosion in comparison to ordinary black steel bars, they have been employed in a wide number of applications worldwide to achieve the durability performance of reinforced concrete structures, especially in extremely corrosive marine environments or when long service lives are required. In this paper, a state of the art on the corrosion resistance of stainless steel bars is reported. In particular, the contribution of Professor Luca Bertolini in this research field is considered. Initially, different testing methods are presented to point out their advantages and limitations and then the results on corrosion behaviour of different grades of stainless steel bars (i.e. austenitic, ferritic and duplex), obtained especially with tests in concrete, are analysed. Abstract

This keynote paper deals with the durability of reinforced concrete (RC) structures exposed to aggressive environments characterized by high concentration of chloride ions, namely, marine environments or the use of de-icing salts. The mechanism of chloride-induced corrosion of steel in concrete is introduced, and its influence on the service life of RC structures is analyzed. Factors affecting the time to corrosion initiation are described with regard to both concrete properties and environmental exposure conditions. Design approaches available for achieving durability targets associated with the design service life are analyzed, focusing on studies carried out by the authors in recent years at the mCD Concrete Durability lab of Politecnico di Milano, which were aimed at improving the protection provided to the steel bars by the concrete cover, investigating the advantages of using corrosion-resistant stainless steel bars and developing the electrochemical technique of cathodic prevention.
