- Abstract
The objective of this research was to determine the productivity of INIFAT 93 and INIFAT 94 cultivars of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) in tobacco agroecosystems in Pinar del Río. Between April and July 2019, field experiments were established in agricultural settings of Guane and San Juan y Martínez, characterized by a leached yellowish Ferralitic soil. Sowing was done manually at 0.60 m between rows and 0.15 m between plants. The evaluations were carried out at harvest time and growth variables (biomass), yield components and crop index were considered for each cultivar and agroecosystem. Higher biological productivity was achieved with INIFAT 94, although the differentiated response between cultivars, for biomass values, was more accentuated in San Juan and Martínez. Yield components were favored in INIFAT 94; while the lowest variability and highest efficiency in the conversion of economically useful biomass was obtained with INIFAT 93. The agricultural productivity of the INIFAT 94 cultivar exceeded that of INIFAT 93 by more than 25 % in the two agroecosystems, with values higher than 1.0 t/ha., El objetivo de la presente investigación fue determinar la productividad de los cultivares INIFAT 93 e INIFAT 94 de frijol caupí (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) en agroecosistemas tabacaleros de Pinar del Río.

This study aimed to determine the species of insects associated with cowpea (Vigna unguculata (L.) Walp.) in agroecosystems of Pinar del Río, Cuba. Samplings were carried out during the vegetative and reproductive phases of the cultivars 'INIFAT 93' and 'INIFAT 94'. The frequency of appearance in the two cultivars was determined, as well as their relationship by means of linear regression. The classification criteria of Mason and Bryant were also followed. There were 21 insect species, including phytophagous (61.9%) and beneficial (38.1%), grouped into 14 families and five orders, with the highest representation of Coleoptera and Hemiptera. The families with the highest species richness were Chrysomelidae and Coccinelidae., Of the identified species, 71.4% were observed on the two cowpea bean cultivars. A frequency of occurrence greater than 50% was shown by Empoasca kraemeri Ross & Moore, Liriomyza trifolii Burgess in Comstock, Epitrix cucumeris (Harris), Aphis craccivora Koch, Coleomegilla cubensis (Casey), Condylostylus sp., and Diglyphus sp. Cowpea bean [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] is an important grain legume with agronomic and productive potential under edaphoclimatic conditions in Cuba, but little known and studied in agroecosystems of Pinar del Río. In “San Juan y Martínez” municipality, four cowpea cultivars were established ('INIFAT 93', 'INIFAT 94', 'IPA 206' and 'TITÁN') with the aim of evaluating their growth and yield. The sowing was carried out in spring (04/02/2019), at a frame of 0.60 x 0.15-0.20 m, in a leached Yellowish Ferrallitic soil dedicated to the cultivation of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.). A randomized block experimental design with four treatments (cultivars) and four replicates was used. Higher biological productivity and agricultural yield were obtained in the cultivars 'TITÁN' and 'INIFAT 94', which exceeded more than 32 % the production of 'INIFAT 93', although this reached a harvest index higher than 50 % and all expressed indices of vain pods less than 30 %. The increase in the number of pods with shorter length and greater mass of grains per pod enhanced crop yield. The results suggest the use of 'INIFAT 94' and 'TITÁN' in the production of grains in tobacco agroecosystems of Pinar del Río, but different spatial and temporal arrangements must be studied, the contribution of biomass to the soil, the incidence of pests, among other aspects with influence on the productivity and sustainability of the crop. - Abstract
The interaction environmental genotype in common bean crops (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and their reaction to Meloidogyne spp., are aspects insufficiently addressed despite the influence they have on the productive results of this crop. The productive potential of five common bean crops was determined, in agroecosystems in Pinar del Río, Cuba, and the incidence of a population of Meloidogyne spp. in the vegetative phase of the crop. To this end, field experiments were established in ‘San Juan and Martínez’ and ‘Sandino’, on Ferralitic yellowish and Fluvisol soils, respectively. Commercial crops (treatments) were used: ‘BAT 304’ (commercial production witness), ‘CUL 156’, ‘Buenaventura’, ‘Delicias 364’ and ‘Chevere’. A test was also developed, under semi-controlled conditions with pots of 1. 5 kg and substrate based on ferralitic yellowish + peat soil (70% + 30%), with and without inoculation of Meloidogyne spp. (1.5 J2-eggs g-1 substrate) in the crops referred. The differences between crops and their interaction with agroecosystems showed a marked influence on grain production, although the best results were obtained with the crops ‘CUL 156’ and ‘Buenaventura’, because they exceeded by 25% the agricultural yield of the commercial production witness, in the agroecosystem of 'San Juan and Martínez’ and ‘Sandino’, respectively. It was confirmed that the cultivars evaluated are hosts of Meloidogyne spp., although ‘Buenaventura’ expressed lower infection index for the level of inoculum used, while the inverse relationship between weight and the number of guts and ootheca in the radical system of plants, suggested a harmful effect of these phytonematodes on the vegetative phase of the crop, La interacción genotipo ambiente en cultivares de frijol común (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) y su reacción frente a Meloidogyne spp., son aspectos abordados a pesar de la influencia que tienen en los resultados productivos.

With the objective of evaluate the yield of four cultivars of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in two localities of Pinar del Río, Cuba, field experiments were established in San Juan y Martínez and Sandino, on Ferralitic Yellowish and Arenosol soils respectively. The cultivars BAT 304, CUL 156, Buenaventura and ‘Delicias 364’ were used. The results showed significant differences between the local cultivar interactions, with less variability to the change of environment in CUL 156 and BAT 304; however, agricultural yield increased by more than 35 % with CUL 156 and Buenaventura, with respect to the commercial production control BAT 304, which exceeded 70 % of their genetic potential in San Juan y Martínez and Sandino, respectively.

This study is aimed at determining the effect of a population of root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) on the growth and vegetative development of three cultivars of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). The trial was established under semi-controlled conditions at the University of Pinar del Río, Cuba. The cultivars 'Chévere', 'Guamá 23' and 'Tomeguín 93' were used, with and without inoculation of Meloidogyne spp. (1.5 J2-eggs / g of substrate), sown in 1.8 kg pots and substrate based on Ferralitic Yellowish soil + peat (70 % + 30 %), previously disinfested with formaldehyde (4 %). The presence of knots and egg masses caused by Meloidogyne spp. in cultivars and its effect on morpho-physiological values were determine using Variance Analysis and Tukey test. Less knots and egg masses formation (media / gram of root) were found in the cultivars 'Chévere '(13.8 and 7.5) and' Tomeguín 93 '(24.1 and 14.2), respectively, with significant differences comparing with 'Guamá 23' (51.6 and 32) whose values suggested better host capacity for Meloidogyne spp. However, the morphophysiological variables in this cultivar did not show significant differences among the plants inoculated and not inoculated with phytoparasites. Significant affectation was only found by the inoculation of Meloidogyne spp. in the diameter of the stem and the fresh biomass of the cultivars 'Chévere' and 'Tomeguín 93', respectively, although in the latter it caused a reduction of more than 10 % in all the variables evaluated. In the context of conventional agriculture, where the use of external inputs causes negative impacts on agricultural systems, energy efficiency studies are a vitally important element to mediate their sustainability. The research was carried out in the municipality of Pinar del Río with the objective of evaluating the energy efficiency of five agroecosystems with differences in the productive processes they develop. The productivity and energy efficiency indexes were calculated with the use of Energy 3.01 software, among which the following were considered: energy consumed, energy produced, protein production, people fed by the agroecosystem with the production of protein and energy, energy cost of protein, energy intensity and energy balance. It was found that the agroecosystems evaluated depend on external inputs for the development of productive processes, affecting their energy efficiency, a result that suggests the need to promote greater diversification of production and the use of agroecological practices, appropriate to local conditions that guarantee greater sustainability. The research was conducted at the "El Jaguey" belonging to the Cooperative Credit and Service "Ramón López Peña" of the Council Popular Cortés, Sandino, Pinar de Río, with the aim of determining vegetative and yield development in five cultivars of onion (Allium cepa L.). The established cultivars were 'Caribe 71', 'Diandra F1', 'Regent F1', 'Red Creole' and 'Texas Early Grain E 502', which were distributed in a completely randomized block design with three replications. The planting was carried out in rows, at a distance of 0.30 x 0.10 m, with homogeneous seedlings of each cultivar. Evaluations were carried out at 32 and 60 days after transplantation, where the variables plant height, number of active leaves, diameter of the false stem and total fresh mass were characterized. At harvest time, the fresh mass, the equatorial and polar diameters and the humidity were determined in the bulbs. The crop yield was also estimated. The results showed greater vegetative development in the cultivars 'Texas Early Grano E 502' and 'Red Creole', although the former reached yields above 35 t ha-1 and significantly exceeded the other cultivars. The equatorial diameter of the bulb determined its fresh mass in more than 85%, with the exception of the cultivar 'Texas Early Grano E 502', while the percentage of humidity of the bulb exceeded 75% in all cases and was infiuenced by the color of the same.
