2. An asymptotic homotopy lifting property

Abstract

A $C^*$-algebra $A$ is said to have the homotopy lifting property if for all $C^*$-algebras $B$ and $E$, for every surjective $^*$-homomorphism $\pi \colon E \rightarrow B$ and for every $^*$-homomorphism $\phi \colon A \rightarrow E$, any path of $^*$-homomorphisms $A \rightarrow B$ starting at $\pi \phi$ lifts to a path of $^*$-homomorphisms $A \rightarrow E$ starting at $\phi$. Blackadar has shown that this property holds for all semiprojective $C^*$-algebras. We show that a version of the homotopy lifting property for asymptotic morphisms holds for separable $C^*$-algebras that are sequential inductive limits of semiprojective $C^*$-algebras. It also holds for any separable $C^*$-algebra if the quotient map $\pi$ satisfies an approximate decomposition property in the spirit of (but weaker than) the notion of quasidiagonality for extensions., Comment: Minor typographical errors corrected. Abstract

We introduce a new class of operator algebras -- tracially complete C*-algebras -- as a vehicle for transferring ideas and results between C*-algebras and their tracial von Neumann algebra completions. We obtain structure and classification results for amenable tracially complete C*-algebras satisfying an appropriate version of Murray and von Neumann's property gamma for II_1 factors. In a precise sense, these results fit between Connes' celebrated theorems for injective II_1 factors and the unital classification theorem for separable simple nuclear C*-algebras. We classify the unital embeddings of a unital separable nuclear $C^*$-algebra satisfying the universal coefficient theorem into a unital simple separable nuclear $C^*$-algebra that tensorially absorbs the Jiang--Su algebra. 5. A topology on E-theory

Abstract

For separable $C^*$-algebras $A$ and $B$, we define a topology on the set $[[A, B]]$ consisting of homotopy classes of asymptotic morphisms from $A$ to $B$. This gives an enrichment of the Connes--Higson asymptotic category over topological spaces. We show that the Hausdorffization of this category is equivalent to the shape category of Dadarlat. As an application, we obtain a topology on the $E$-theory group $E(A, B)$ with properties analogous to those of the topology on $KK(A, B)$. The Hausdorffized $E$-theory group $EL(A, B) = E(A, B) / \overline{\{0\}}$ is also introduced and studied. Abstract

In this article, we present the results of the research carried out at the Gravettian occupation level of Cueva del Arco (Spain). For this purpose, a multidisciplinary investigation has been carried out in which all the elements recovered in the excavations carried out since 2015 at this site have been studied. The results are contextualised alongside all of the existing Gravettian sites in Mediterranean Iberia. The study of the material culture, the fauna, the landscape, and the dating has allowed us to approach the occupations of the site from many perspectives and has permitted us to conclude that Cueva del Arco was occupied sporadically at the beginning of the Gravettian period by a small human group in what would be the beginning of the consolidation of the anatomically modern humans (AMH) in this territory. Furthermore, these occupations were preceded by others belonging to the Aurignacian, which left hardly any remains in the cave. The data presented in this article lead us to believe that Cueva del Arco is a site of great importance for the knowledge of the beginning of the AMH settlement in the Iberian Mediterranean, both in its expansion towards the south and in its definitive consolidation in this territory.

7. Self-Concept and Feeling of Belonging as a Predictor Variable of the Attitude towards the Study from the PISA 2018 Report

Abstract

The importance of self-concept and the feeling of belonging to a school have been highlighted in numerous studies as predictors of school success. However, there are hardly any studies that link the relationship between self-concept and the feeling of belonging to the school. Thus, the aim of this study is to analyze the influence of personal and educational self-concept on the feeling of belonging to school, based on the data provided by the PISA 2018 report. To achieve this objective, a correlational methodology based on structural equation modelling has been used. The sample of participants is composed of 35,943 students of Compulsory Secondary Education from different Spanish high schools that participated in the PISA 2018 Report. The results obtained have shown that personal and educational self-concept correlate positively. In addition, both factors were positively related to the feeling of belonging to the educational centre. This study allows us to infer the idea of the existence of a direct and positive correlation between school and personal self-concept and the feeling of belonging, which would allow schools to develop educational intervention programmes with the aim of promoting the student's self-concept in order for them to feel better integrated into the school.

Abstract

Since the 1960s, the analysis of disturbed satellite orbits to infer Earth’s gravity field functionals has been an important element in determining the Earth’s gravitational field. The long wavelengths of the gravitational field are recovered through the analysis of non-Keplerian variations in the orbital path of artificial satellites, from their tracking from ground stations (Satellite Laser Ranging, Doppler Orbitography and Radiopositioning Integrated by Satellite, and Precise Range And Range-Rate Equipment), from satellite-to-satellite tracking, or by microwave interferometry. In addition, differences in gravitational acceleration in three mutually orthogonal dimensions can be determined by employing a differential accelerometer carried on artificial satellites (satellite gravity gradiometry, SGG). Satellite gravimetry provides global information (long wavelengths) of the Earth’s gravitational field, which is the fundamental basis for the implementation of Global Geopotential Models (GGMs). The GGMs are one of the key tools for the representation of the Earth’s gravity field and, therefore, for the establishment of a Global Height System (i.e., International Height Reference System), whose fundamental reference surface is defined in terms of a geopotential value. In this study, the validation of high-resolution GGMs (coefficients up to degree 2190) was performed based on their performance in Ecuador by comparing geoid heights estimated by the GGMs with the corresponding values derived from Global Navigation Satellite System/leveling records. Furthermore, geopotential values from the GGMs are compared with the corresponding value obtained for the Ecuadorian Vertical Datum by solving the fixed geodetic boundary value problem. The obtained results indicated that the precision of the high-resolution GGMs does not reach the established requirements for the geopotential computation in the International Height Reference Frame fundamental stations.

Abstract

Understanding the behaviour of hosts of SARS-CoV-2 is crucial to our understanding of the virus. A comparison of environmental features related to the incidence of SARS-CoV-2 with those of its potential hosts is critical. We examine the distribution of coronaviruses among bats. We analyse the distribution of SARS-CoV-2 in a nine-week period following lockdown in Italy, Spain, and Australia. We correlate its incidence with environmental variables particularly ultraviolet radiation, temperature, and humidity. We establish a clear negative relationship between COVID-19 and ultraviolet radiation, modulated by temperature and humidity. We relate our results with data showing that the bat species most vulnerable to coronavirus infection are those which live in environmental conditions that are similar to those that appear to be most favourable to the spread of COVID-19. The SARS-CoV-2 ecological niche has been the product of long-term coevolution of coronaviruses with their host species. Understanding the key parameters of that niche in host species allows us to predict circumstances where its spread will be most favourable. Such conditions can be summarised under the headings of nocturnality and seasonality. High ultraviolet radiation, in particular, is proposed as a key limiting variable. We therefore expect the risk of spread of COVID-19 to be highest in winter conditions, and in low light environments. Abstract

The diversity of South American deer genera during the Quaternary is considered one of the greatest in the world. However, this was established during the beginning of the twentieth century, when the recognition of new extinct deer taxa was based only on differences in antler morphology. Thus, South American extinct deer taxa need a detailed taxonomic revision, and this is the case of the Andean deer genera Agalmaceros and Charitoceros. First, both taxa are diagnosed by the presence of thorns in their antlers. Consequently, by taxonomic priority, Agalmaceros is a senior synonym of Charitoceros. Second, we recognize here that the thorns of the antlers of Agalmaceros are the symptom of a pathology that also affects some extant deer. Excluding the thorns of the antlers, the antler of Agalmaceros is identical to that of Odocoileus virginianus, indicating that Agalmaceros is a junior synonym to this extant deer. The recognition of epizootic hemorrhagic disease as the possible cause for the thorny antlers of Andean O. virginianus and the ample record of this affecting antlers in deer from the tropical Andes suggests that an epidemic occurred in this region in the Late Pleistocene. Before describing a new taxon, taxonomists must exhaust all possibilities to explain morphological variations. In this regard, this contribution provides an interesting, important and weakly explored area in paleontology, namely taxonomic revision under a paleopathology context. With the taxonomic invalidation of Agalmaceros and Charitoceros proposed here, the diversity of South American deer genera during the Pleistocene is poorer than previously established and includes 11 taxa – seven extant and four extinct. Abstract

In this work, the determination of the discrepancy between the Ecuadorian Vertical Datum (EVD) and the International Height Reference System (IHRS) is presented. The vertical offset was estimated at the EVD based on the fixed geodetic boundary value problem approach. The focus of the experiment was the determination of the anomalous potential in the EVD, which in turn enable determination of the respective geopotential value. Taking a geopotential space-based approach, two estimates of the EVD offset with respect to the IHRS were obtained that amount to −1.51 and −1.61 m2/s2.

Nuclear C*-algebras enjoy a number of approximation properties, most famously the completely positive approximation property. This was recently sharpened to arrange for the incoming maps to be sums of order-zero maps. We show that, in addition, the outgoing maps can be chosen to be asymptotically order-zero. We give a rigorous account and prove continuity properties for the correspondence between almost flat bundles on a triangularizable compact connected space and the quasi-representations of its fundamental group.
