In this study, the process of design, implementation, evaluation, and redesign of a Teaching-Learning Sequence (TLS) on simple machines for students of 9-12 years old is shown according to the principles of Design Based Research. The aim is to create a TLS that satisfactorily addresses the conceptual difficulties inherent to the object of study and that succeeds in fostering self-regulation skills and creativity. Both qualitative (focus group, semi-structured interviews, students' reports, and teacher's class notes) and quantitative instruments (a validated questionnaire and an ad hoc one with content validation by experts) are used. The statistical analysis of the questionnaires and the narrative analysis of the qualitative instruments have been triangulated. The results show that students manage to address the conceptual and procedural difficulties of the object of study while developing emotional (enjoyment and self-efficacy) and cognitive (metacognition) self-regulation skills, as well as creativity related to the scientific and artisan domains.

The authors examined the relationship between cochlear implants (CIs) and reading acquisition and attempted to determine the part played by phonological and orthographic resources in this task. Four groups of Spanish-speaking deaf children were examined: children with either early- or late-implanted CIs, and children without CIs who had either moderate or profound hearing loss. A hearing group was included to control for age and reading level. Reading, spelling, and three metaphonological abilities were evaluated. The results showed that the reading levels achieved by deaf children strongly depend on phonological ability. Age at implantation and, for deaf children without CIs, degree of hearing loss, play important roles in this ability. The results further suggest that both deaf and hearing children develop phonological representations of words, a skill that contributes to reading and spelling acquisition. Reciprocally, reading itself contributes to the elaboration of phonological and orthographic representations.

The aim of this study is to examine the mechanisms used by deaf children with and without cochlear implants (CIs) to read sentences and the linguistic bases (vocabulary and syntax) underlying those reading mechanisms. Previous studies have shown that deaf persons read sentences using the key word strategy (KWS), which consists of identifying some frequent content words and ignoring the function words. The present results show that deaf children, including those wearing CIs from an early age, do use the KWS. It is also shown that this tendency is related with a linguistic deficiency, especially with a poor ability to deal with function words. Furthermore, the age of implantation, and the degree of hearing loss for children without CIs, plays an important role in using the KWS. Some pedagogical consequences of this situation are considered.

The aim of this study was to collect data concerning the sensitivity of 2nd-6th grade Spanish-speaking children towards orthographic regularities. In a first experiment, children were asked to spell words that begin with /b/, a sound that is inconsistently spelled "b" or "v", depending on the lexeme. Low frequency words were used to reduce the use of lexical information in spelling. In Spanish, the frequency of graphemes "b" and "v" depends on the following vowel; for example, in initial position, the bigram "vi" is more frequent than "bi" while "vu" is less frequent than "bu". Evidence concerning the use of sublexical regularities in English and French--opaque orthographic systems--is already available. The question was whether such knowledge also applies in a more transparent system like Spanish, in which a phonologically based strategy is quite efficient. The main finding was that participants' spelling strongly depended on the relative frequency of bigrams. This was already evident in second graders' spelling and increased with schooling. In Experiment 2 these results were confirmed using pseudo-words. The results exclude a functional view of spelling, which supposes that orthographic resources are not used to spell in consistent orthographic systems, since phonologically based mechanisms are sufficient to override any others.

Introduction: The increasing evidence of SARS‐CoV‐2 impact on the central nervous system (CNS) raises key questions on its impact for risk of later life cognitive decline, Alzheimer's disease (AD), and other dementia. Methods: The Alzheimer's Association and representatives from more than 30 countries—with technical guidance from the World Health Organization—have formed an international consortium to study the short‐and long‐term consequences of SARS‐CoV‐2 on the CNS—including the underlying biology that may contribute to AD and other dementias. This consortium will link teams from around the world covering more than 22 million COVID‐19 cases to enroll two groups of individuals including people with disease, to be evaluated for follow‐up evaluations at 6, 9, and 18 months, and people who are already enrolled in existing international research studies to add additional measures and markers of their underlying biology. Conclusions: The increasing evidence and understanding of SARS‐CoV‐2's impact on the CNS raises key questions on the impact for risk of later life cognitive decline, AD, and other dementia. This program of studies aims to better understand the long‐term consequences that may impact the brain, cognition, and functioning—including the underlying biology that may contribute to AD and other dementias. Tlayudas are a kind of native-traditional tortillas gaining popularity around the world. This study addresses the effect of two nixtamalization methods (traditional and artisanal) on some physicochemical and nutraceutical properties of tlayudas made from three native and five improved maize 'Bolita' landrace samples. Two commercial hybrids were used as controls. All native and improved samples showed grains with higher test weight (>77 kg hL−1) and bigger size grains compared to those hybrids normally used for table tortilla production. Artisanal nixtamalization involved a higher concentration of lime (3.0 %w/w) and a more exhaustive rinsing leading that more of the hydrolyzed pericarp being lost in the cooking solution and the rinsing water. A lower retained pericarp was associated with a softer masa and a less leathery tlayuda texture. Tlayudas made from blue maize had significantly (p < 0.05) higher content of phenolics and the highest antioxidant capacity (DPPH and ABTS methods), which was around 4.5-fold higher than that of yellow maize tlayudas. HPLC results indicated the acylated and non-acylated cyanidins, mainly cyanidin-3-glucoside, which increased after processing due to the degradation of the acylated cyanidins. Yellow tlayudas showed better retention of phenolics and carotenoids compounds, mainly Provitamin A carotenoids. This study showed that the nixtamalization process did not greatly impact the nutraceutical properties of tlayudas, these properties are more dependent on the type of maize. • 'Bolita' native and improved maize genotypes were evaluated for tlayuda production. • A softer masa and a leathery tlayuda texture were obtained by traditional nixtamalization process. • Higher lime concentrations led to a lower phenolics and anthocyanins retention. • Yellow tlayudas showed better retention of Provitamin A carotenoids. Mexico has a long history of parasitological studies in communities of vertebrates. However, the mega diversity of the country makes fauna inventories an ongoing priority. Presently, there is little published on the parasite fauna of gray foxes ( Urocyon cinereoargenteus Schereber, 1775) and this study provides new records of parasites for gray foxes in central Mexico. It is a continuation of a series of previous parasitological studies conducted with this carnivore in Mexico from 2003 to the present. A total of 24 foxes in the Parque Nacional El Cimatario (PANEC) were trapped, anaesthetized, and parasites recovered. The species found were Dirofilaria immitis , Ctenocephalides canis, C. felis, Euhoplopsillus glacialis affinis (first report for gray foxes in Mexico) Pulex simulants, and Ixodes sp. Three additional gray fox carcasses were necropsied and the parasites collected were adult nematodes Physaloptera praeputialis and Toxocara canis . The intensive study of the gray fox population selected for the 2013–2015 recent period allowed for a two-fold increase in the number of parasite species recorded for this carnivore since 2003 (nine to 18 parasite species), mainly recording parasitic arthropods, Dirofilaria immitis filariae and adult nematodes. The parasite species recorded are generalists that can survive in anthropic environments; which is characteristic of the present ecological scenario in central Mexico. The close proximity of the PANEC to the city of Santiago de Queretaro suggests possible parasite transmission between the foxes and domestic and feral dogs. Furthermore, packs of feral dogs in the PANEC might have altered habitat use by foxes, with possible impacts on transmission. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
