The Andes is the most biodiverse region across the globe. In addition, some of the largest urban areas in South America are located within this region. Therefore, ecosystems and human population are affected by hydroclimate changes reported at global, regional and local scales. This paper summarizes progress of knowledge about long-term trends observed during the last two millennia over the entire Andes, with more detail for the period since the second half of the 20th century, and presents a synthesis of climate change projections by the end of the 21st century. In particular, this paper focuses on temperature, precipitation and surface runoff in the Andes. Changes in the Andean cryosphere are not included here since this particular topic is discussed in other paper in this Frontiers special issue, and elsewhere (e.g. IPCC, 2019b). While previous works have reviewed the hydroclimate of South America and particular sectors (i.e., Amazon and La Plata basins, the Altiplano, Northern South America, etc.) this review includes for the first time the entire Andes region, considering all latitudinal ranges: tropical (North of 27 S), subtropical (27 S37 S) and extratropical (South of 37 S). This paper provides a comprehensive view of past and recent changes, as well as available climate change projections, over the entire Andean range. From this review, the main knowledge gaps are highlighted and urgent research necessities in order to provide more mechanistic understanding of hydroclimate changes in the Andes and more confident projections of its possible changes in association with global climate change. This thesis is mainly concerned with the adaptation of the LMDZ/CIMA General Circulation Model, in order to be able to study the Southern Hemisphere climatology. The first step of this work was to make the necessary adjustments to improve the representation of the mean fields. Three experiments were designed. The "smooth" experiment differs from the "control" one in the value imposed to the drag coefficient Cd; and the "zoom" experiment is an experiment with stretched grid scheme. In fact, the control experiment shows that the Southern Hemisphere simulation is not appropriate. Nevertheless, the tuning into the drag coefficient improved the subpolar throught representation. The "zoom" experiment improved the representation of the sea level pressure and the polar jet. Nevertheless, the physical variable misrepresentations appeares to be more related to the physical parameterizations than the resolution itself. The "zoom" experiment underestimates the representation of the transients disturbances, maybe because of the model coarse resolution. However, it reproduces acceptably the heat and angular momentum transients fluxes. In general, it is observed that the mean flow baroclinicity is well represented. However, the kinetic energy of the transient disturbances is underestimated, due to the inadequate representation of the baroclinic conversion term. Nevertheless, the model reproduces the effects of the eddies on the mean flow: the disturbances tend to accelerate the westerlies south of 30ºS. The zoom version model also represents the barotropic structure of the southern stationary waves, but not the vertical propagation of the waves due to its coarse vertical resolution. In order to determine the benefits of having applied the stretched grid scheme technique, horizontal resolution experiments were done (low, medium and high-resolution). These experiments were carried out with zoom and with regular grid. The results of this intercomparison showed that: i) the zoom introduction does not generate numerical disturbances, and ii) it is observed that the zoom experiments with a specified horizontal resolution compare well with those of regular grid and 50% greater resolution, without increasing the computational costs. In order to test the ability of LMDZ/CIMA GCM to reproduce different climate scenarios, an intercomparison with other model simulations were performed. It was found that the LMDZ/CIMA model is able to represent the interaction processes involved on the climate change. Finally, a sensitivity experiment forced by anomalous extratropical meridional gradient of sea surface temperature was designed. It was observed that the atmospheric circulation responds to the imposed anomalous temperatures, with a northern displacement of the polar jet. Particularly, it was conclude that the weakening of the transient momentum transport would induce the weakening of the subpolar jet and the intensification of the subtropical jet. It was found that the sensitivity experiment resembles to previous studies of Antarctic marine ice removal, whereas it differs than other experiments of global warming. This result could be explain by the fact that the increase of water-vapor and to the intensification of the temperature gradient at height levels, could be more relevant to the atmospheric circulation than the change in the meridional gradient of sea surface temperatures. CLIMATE change - Abstract
Until the mid 1970s a negative trend in the river flow values in theArgentinean provinces of San Juan and Mendoza (Cuyo region) was observed. The prevailing critical conditions and their economic and social impacts provide a basis for the characterization of an adverse climate change scenario for the region. The causes of the early 1970s scenario were assessed in this study in order to determine whether or not it could be related to global warming conditions. River flows are dependent on winter precipitation and on accumulated snow on the Andescordillera. The lowest negative river flow value observed can be explained by the behaviour of the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) and other macroclimatic parameters, such as sea-surface temperatures (SSTs) of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. It was observed that the SOI isthe parameter most strongly correlated with river flows. The highestcorrelation was found for the 2.4- and 4.8-yr frequencies and the low 43-yr frequency. Consequently, the low river flow values observed during the early 1970s are considered to be related to a low-frequencyminimum of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), as well as to the behaviour of sea-surface temperature close to the coast of Chile. Both factors are associated with a minimum hemispheric temperature value. It is concluded that the 1960--70 drought in the oases of the cordillera was not linked to a warm period. Therefore it is not appropriate, at least for the time being, to state that the oases will experience drought conditions under a global warming scenario with temperature increases of a few degrees. This thesis addresses the issue of heat waves affecting central-eastern Argentina from different points of view and scales. Aspects related to the physical processes that catalyze or modulate the occurrence of heat waves, their characteristics, statistics and change projections are studied, and decreasing in scale, impact studies are carried out. The thesis goes beyond the typical comparison of modeled versus observed climatologies, as it includes the analysis of a series of ad-hoc experiments for the study of the processes at the soil-atmosphere interface and a novel characterization of heat waves. Moreover, an innovative and interdisciplinary approach to assess the impact of climate and its variability on the cooling energy demand of social housing is presented. Previous studies have shown that central-eastern Argentina is a climatic transition zone with land-atmosphere coupling. This thesis explores the effect of this coupling (i.e., of the feedback between soil moisture and the atmosphere) on the warm extremes of the temperature field. The analysis of a series of numerical experiments designed ad-hoc for the study of land-atmosphere interactions shows that such interactions affect the tail of the probability distribution of the thermal field, impacting on the warm extremes and on their persistence. Furthermore, the existence of both land-atmosphere coupling and relatively dry soil conditions enhance the occurrence of temperature extremes. In absence of land-atmosphere coupling, the impact of soil moisture conditions (dry or wet) is weaker. These results suggest that the role of interactions between soil moisture and the atmosphere is more important than the impact of stationary soil moisture anomalies. Climate change projections for central-eastern Argentina show increases in the persistence of hot days, warm nights and humid days. These impact on heat waves change projections, which were analyzed and categorized. From a multivariate analysis that includes information on both temperature and moisture content, three main types of heat waves emerge: hot and dry (“dry”), extremely hot and humid (“intense”) and humid with particularly hot nights (“humid”). All of these events are projected to become more extreme in the future. In addition, a higher frequency of occurrence of “intense” events is expected as a consequence of the projected changes for the mean fields: higher temperatures, but with stronger increases in minimum temperatures and in wet bulb temperatures rather than in maximum temperatures. Moreover, heat waves that are considered extreme and unlikely under current climate conditions are typical events in the future climate, and this feature accentuates towards the end of the century and under scenarios of higher greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, the variability of heat waves slightly decreases under future climate conditions, when the projected events resemble more the typical event than under present climate conditions. Finally, there are no significant changes in other typical heat wave parameters such as e.g., duration and frequency of events. The residential sector is the second most important sector in terms of energy consumption in the country and its consumption is partially dedicated to maintaining the comfort conditions of its inhabitants. Since both urbanization and extreme heat conditions are expected to keep rising over the coming decades, impact studies on the cooling energy demand of social housing were conducted. Based on the previous experience of the climate and impact communities, a methodology that allows projecting changes in the energy consumption while preserving the information about climate variabilities on different time scales was proposed. Moreover, such methodology allows addressing the uncertainty of the results as an element of judgment for decision makers. It was found that confidence in the results increases as the dwellings’ energy efficiency increases through building interventions that make them less sensitive to the climatic condition. However, when the radiative forcing of the scenario under study is extreme, the effectiveness of such interventions decreases and the uncertainty of the results increases. In particular, heat waves impact by causing energy demand peaks, and case study shows that “wet” heat waves have a greater impact on the energy demand than “dry” heat waves. In addition, those events characterized as “intense” produce the highest peaks of the daily energy demand. Fil: Coronato, Tanea. This thesis work aims to study the value added by Regional Climate Models (RCMs) in simulating the climate of South America. The added value (AV) is defined as a measure of how skillful is the RCM in reproducing the observed climate compared to the Global Climate Model (GCM) from which the boundary conditions were obtained. The thesis goes beyond the typical comparison between the RCM and the GCM since it explores several aspects of AV recently proposed in the literature. We also propose an innovative approach to understand the role of the regional climate in South America in the modeling of the extratropical circulation. Therefore, we address the AV issue through different perspectives: first through statistical approaches, and then through sensitivity experiments that include an increased resolution study in an RCM and a two-way nesting experiment. The thesis shows that RCMs add value regarding its lower resolution global forcing, but only in some aspects of climate. The added value is mainly associated with surface air temperature, since this variable has a marked stationary component at a regional scale in complex terrain areas, as the Andes mountain range and the Brazilian highlands, and also in the coasts. The results are more complex when studying precipitation. The response to whether the RCM adds value or not to the GCM climatology depends on several factors, including the RCM and its physical configuration, the GCM, the season, the location, the metric used, among others. However, results suggest that the increase in resolution has the potential to improve local precipitation associated with the active phase of the South American Monsoon System in the tropics, as a result of an increase in moisture convergence at low levels and an increase in the frequency of occurrence of intense precipitation events. On the other hand, we did not find improvements of the RCM compared to its global forcing during winter, probably because rainfall in this season is associated with synoptic-scale frontal passages. The two-way interaction between an RCM and a GCM resulted in an improvement in the circulation at low levels of the GCM within SA and effectively enhanced the extratropical circulation of the southern hemisphere. The improvements in the continent were identified in the transport of energy associated with the low-level jet stream (LLJ) between the tropics and extratropics. This local improvement effectively forced large-scale circulation, especially during the summer, reducing the bias of the GCM in simulating the location of the eddy-driven jet stream in the upper troposphere. Therefore, high-resolution climate data on SA have the potential to add value not only locally in the continent but also to effectively enhance the ex tratropical circulation. Fil: Falco, Magdalena. - Abstract
In this PhD thesis the interactions among variables associated to land surface-atmospherecoupling processes, their possible links with dry spells length and their potential changesunder an intermediate emissions scenario of GHG were studied in South America (SA). Todo this, numerical simulations data generated with regional climate models were used. Moreover, it was evaluated the skills of reanalysis to reproduce the climatology of australsummer maximum temperature and winter minimum temperature in southeastern of SA (SESA). The inherent uncertainty due to use of data from reanalysis of maximum (TX) andminimum temperature (TN) in SESA is studied through the comparison of seasonal meanfields and the variability of the three reanalysis with an observational dataset for the period 1961-2000. The bias of ensemble of reanalysis presents similar magnitudes for bothvariables, but the dispersion among reanalysis datasets is greater in summer. The bias intemperature is, hence, in part linked to the error in determination of the sensible and latentheat flux as well as the net surface radiation. The errors in the geographical distribution ofspatial anomalies of temperature have a similar magnitude for both reanalysis and regionalclimate models analyzed. The changes in daily and interannual variability and extremes of maximum temperature ofsummer and minimum temperature of winter between periods 1981-2000 and 1961-1980are also studied. The geographical pattern of change of daily variability between bothperiods and for both variables is similar to geographical pattern of change of extremes. In Argentina, there is a decrease in the frequency of hot days in summer and cold nights inwinter, consistently with a decrease in daily variability. The changes between both periodssuggest a shift toward southwest in the zone of maximum interannual variability ofmaximum temperature according to the observational climatology, possibly linked withchanges in precipitation variability. In general, the reanalysis analyzed have difficulties toreproduce the main geographical patterns of changes in daily and interannual variability ofstudied variables between both periods. The response to climate change of precipitation, temperature and evapotranspiration (ET)for austral summer is analyzed in SA using projections of three regional models. The localfeedbacks between land surface and atmosphere can help to the links among thesevariables in some regions of SA. The projected changes of precipitation for 2071-2100present a positive response in SESA. The interannual variability of ET has a geographicaldistribution similar to the variability of temperature, with a maximum in SESA, suggestingthat these two variables are intercorrelated. In the present climate, SESA is a transitionzone where ET depends on surface water availability (soil moisture-controlled regime). Although the projections show that ET regime will remain soil moisture-controlled, themagnitude of correlations between temperature and ET decrease (in absolute value) for 2071-2100 in areas where increase soil water availability. The interannual variability oftemperature and ET tends to decrease in SESA. However, in the Brazilian Highlands themodels project opposite changes to SESA. On the other hand, the study of regionalcirculation shows that a strengthening northerly mean wind in low levels tends to inhibit thecoupled conditions in SESA, i. e. it promotes the reduction of sensibility of temperatureand ET to variations of precipitation, whereas a weakening northerly mean wind favorscoupling conditions. According to the models, this strengthening of the northerly wind ismainly produced by the increase in the cyclonic circulation associated to the Chaco Lowand to an increment of the easterly flux from the Atlantic subtropical High. Finally, it is using a gridpoint- and model- dependent definition to determine dry spells in SA and to analyze its mean length, at annual scale, for simulations of present climate andunder a possible climate change scenario. In turn, these results are compared with thearidity regimes calculated with the Budyko Index and it is shown that the transitionprojected toward a drier regime in the Brazilian Highlands could be accompanied by alengthening of dry spells and a reduction of their frequency. The strengthening of dryconditions in the Brazilian Highlands could favor the increase of local feedbacks betweenland surface and atmosphere which contribute to lengthen dry spells.
