This article is a response to the insightful pieces written about my beginning attempt of defining and elaborating on a cultural political psychology (Carriere, 2022), of which there were four - Beckstead and Jordan (2023); Busch-Jensen and Røn-Larsen (2023); Mazur (2023a); and Rutherford (2023). Their commentaries were varied in their expansions and thoughts on the work, and each provided a unique perspective on the future of a cultural political psychology. Here, I expand on the points made by each of the authors and synthesize their expansions to look forward to further theoretical elaborations within a cultural political psychology. The article focuses on outlining key priorities for the journal Analyses for the next four years, emphasizing its unique identity within the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI). Topics discussed include expanding epistemologies/methods, diversifying experiences/perspectives, and reaching broader audiences through effective communication and advocacy strategies.

Policies aimed at limiting border crossing and influencing other cultural values have been enacted domestically and internationally in the name of security. However, do these decisions concerning such tradeoffs resonate equally across all groups? In two studies, we probe the moderating impact of intergroup threat on the inclination to restrict human rights. In Study 1, we employ a unique economic tradeoff model to directly compare the value of security with the rights of either citizens or non‐citizens. In Study 2, we broaden these findings by examining whether support for infringements on the right to privacy varies among diverse groups. Across both studies, our results consistently show that an increase in intergroup threat corresponds to heightened restriction of rights, but only when contemplating individuals who are not citizens, such as non‐citizens, residents, or foreigners. We propose future research directions that include promoting the concept of a global community and exploring altruistic behaviours associated with rights protection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Corporate social responsibility is an organization's obligation to be aware of its impact on different aspects of society (e.g., social, environmental, economic). Many companies utilize hashtags, trends, and popular social movements to signal allyship, yet this may be a marketing ploy. Do consumers acknowledge the difference between performative activism and substantial activism? In this study, 198 participants (M = 38.8 years old, SD = 11.5 years) rated companies' perceived support of social issues and their willingness to shop based on different levels of performative and substantive activism. Results showed that consumers were most willing to shop at companies exhibiting substantial activism over and above performative activism (d = 0.39) due to perceiving them as supportive of the issue (d = 0.98), finding evidence for full mediation (indirect CI [.24, .63]). These results were independent of the type of topic and personal beliefs of the participants. This research helps understand how individuals make purchasing decisions and how corporate social responsibility has become more crucial for organizations to elevate their relationships with customers. In this short Introduction, we introduce the new submission form of Syntheses. The goal of Syntheses is to provide a summary and expansion of 6–8 articles on a selected topic within Culture & Psychology. The articles should not be restricted to any time point, and the first author of the Syntheses must be a master's level student or below. Topical syntheses are welcome but are not required. As we emerge in a post-pandemic society, the feelings of isolation present during quarantine persist. But for some, these feelings of isolation have been present long before the pandemic began. The ideal of mental wellness is an important one: depression, anxiety, and persistent feelings of hopelessness severely impact our lives, relationships with loved ones, and our relationship with ourselves. In conjunction with an understanding of mental wellness, there must also be an understanding of mental illness. For in our pursuit of mental wellness after quarantine, we must not forget our compassion for those who have been suffering without. Through this short virtual issue, we invite you to read the following selected articles from Culture & Psychology. Thematically, they may find themselves fitting well with a weekly seminar, or a graduate course on mental health. One may find themselves discovering new insights of theoretical expansion beyond what this Special Issue can provide. Thus, in a quest for the solidification of our compassion, this virtual issue delves into three key aspects of depression: its relationship with ourselves, our cultures, and our bodies. Individuals express support for civil liberties and human rights, but when threatened tend to restrict rights for both others and themselves. However, the question of whether or not rights are restricted to punish others or protect ourselves remains unclear. This meta-analysis integrates the findings of the effect of perceived threats on support for restrictions of civil liberties from 1997 to 2019. It includes 163 effect-size estimates from 46 different articles involving 91,716 participants. The presence of threat increased support for restrictions against outgroup members significantly more than ingroup members, providing a possible punitive explanation for support for restrictions of civil liberties. These findings contribute to the debate on rights and their relationship with deservingness, suggesting that we delineate those who deserve human rights and those who do not. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite the widely ratified United Nations Declaration of Human Rights, support for civil liberties is easily eroded in times of threat. Understanding which factors moderate the relationship between threat and support for civil liberties is critical, yet remains relatively unexplored. In this study, we test a double moderation model in which support for the restriction of civil liberties in the face of threat is moderated by both right‐wing authoritarianism and political sophistication. In a national representative dataset (N = 12,507), those low on right‐wing authoritarianism became more like their high right‐wing authoritarian peers in the face of threat. Also, those more sophisticated about political issues were less supportive of restrictions on civil liberties, but only when threat was low. We tested this model on both restrictions for the in‐group, in terms of being wiretapped, and for the out‐group, in terms of torturing suspected terrorists. Our results suggest that increasing political sophistication may have desirable consequences when considering the outcomes for in‐group members, and we argue for increased efforts to expand the in‐group we seek to protect. This paper will explore how individuals employ imagination through collective action. First, I will outline a definition of imagination, focusing on how the dialogic nature of imagination provides an overarching framework for individuals focused on producing change. Next, I will discuss symbolic resources as a way to link one’s imagination with another’s. Qualitative interviews from The Harry Potter Alliance will be examined as a case where collective action is taken through shared resources. It will highlight how placing real-world issues in dialogue with imaginary constructs can assist in sharing imaginations toward worlds of what-if. Magioglou brought together a host of researchers to examine the lay political thought that an individual deals with at a daily basis. The authors provide a very sound foundation of what can be understood and learned from a societal examination of political psychology. The work models out various ways to conceptualize the individual trying to make meaning of social order, and its methodological and theoretical contributions should be praised by both political scientists and psychologists alike. This work triangulates around notions that seem at first to divide the individual—right and wrong, self and other—and show the unification of them through the interactions of power and values. In this way, this work has extended the discourse of political psychology by positing the individual not simply as a citizen, but as a powerful player whose meaning-making continually shapes the social order one acts within. Both the U.S. military and ISIS need a constant stream of new recruits. Although their goals and values are very different, both the U.S. military and ISIS display 2 main methods of advertising for recruits: communications focused on (1) glory and combat (action-oriented) and (2) community and benefits beyond the self (community-oriented). This study tests to see whether these 2 different types of messaging are perceived differently. Participants (N = 160) responded more positively to videos from both the U.S. military and ISIS featuring community-oriented content. Possible applied implications are discussed.
