1. The assessment of the composition and dynamics of endangered populations is crucial for management and conservation, and appropriate genetic markers are critical. 2. The genetic structuring of the Mediterranean green turtle ( Chelonia mydas) populations and the origin of the stranded animals found along the Israeli coast was investigated using new highly polymorphic short tandem repeat ( STR) markers. 3. The structuring of nesting populations was studied using pairwise genetic distances and a principal coordinates analysis ( PCoA). 4. The contribution of the different nesting populations to the stranded sample was assessed by using a mixed- stock analysis. 5. A clear population genetic structure, not detected before, has been revealed. The four nesting populations are genetically well differentiated, and thus should be considered as different management units. The populations from Turkey and Israel showed higher resemblance, despite residing at opposite ends of the Mediterranean distribution. TheTurkish nesting population is the main source of the stranded turtles sampled along the Israeli shore, confirming that individuals from this population migrate from north to south along the eastern shore of the Mediterranean, as previously shown by telemetry studies. 6. The use of a highly polymorphic haplotyping method enabled the detection of a clear genetic structuring of the green turtle populations in the eastern Mediterranean Sea that was not revealed in previous studies, demonstrating the importance of marker selection in population genetics. 7. The analysis of the genetic composition of the stranded turtles allowed us to investigate the migration patterns from nesting to foraging areas, supporting previous satellite- tracking and stable- isotope results. 8. These results will help to delineate conservation management units for the species in the Mediterranean, and reveal connectivity among beaches and mixed aggregations.

The available information regarding the 2 sea turtle species breeding in the Mediterranean (loggerhead turtle Caretta caretta and green turtle Chelonia mydas) is reviewed, including biometrics and morphology, identification of breeding and foraging areas, ecology and behaviour, abundance and trends, population structure and dynamics, anthropogenic threats and conservation measures. Although a large body of knowledge has been generated, research efforts have been inconsistently allocated across geographic areas, species and topics. Significant gaps still exist, ranging from the most fundamental aspects, such as the distribution of major nesting sites and the total number of clutches laid annually in the region, to more specific topics like age at maturity, survival rates and behavioural ecology, especially for certain areas (e.g. south-eastern Mediterranean). These gaps are particularly marked for the green turtle. The recent positive trends of nest counts at some nesting sites may be the result of the cessation of past exploitation and decades of conservation measures on land, both in the form of national regulations and of continued active protection of clutches. Therefore, the current status should be considered as dependent on such ongoing conservation efforts. Mitigation of incidental catch in fisheries, the main anthropogenic threat at sea, is still in its infancy. From the analysis of the present status a comprehensive list of re search and conservation priorities is proposed. © The authors 2018.

OBIETTIVO: valutare la relazione tra inquinamento atmosferico e ricoveri ospedalieri nelle città italiane partecipanti alla seconda fase del progetto EpiAir (Sorveglianza epidemiologica dell’inquinamento atmosferico: valutazione dei rischi e degli impatti nelle città italiane). DISEGNO: studio di serie temporali con metodologia casecrossover, con aggiustamento per i fattori temporali e meteorologici rilevanti. L’associazione inquinamento atmosferico-ospedalizzazioni è stata analizzata in ciascuna delle 25 città in studio, le stime complessive di effetto sono state ottenute successivamente mediante una metanalisi. Gli inquinanti considerati sono stati il particolato (PM10), il biossido di azoto (NO2 ) e l’ozono (O3 ), quest’ultimo limitatamente al semestre estivo (da aprile a settembre). In 13 città in cui i dati erano disponibili è stata analizzata anche la frazione fine del particolato (PM2.5). SETTING E PARTECIPANTI: lo studio ha esaminato 2.246.448 ricoveri ospedalieri urgenti per cause naturali di pazienti residenti e ricoverati, nel periodo 2006-2010, in 25 città italiane, di cui 10 già partecipanti alla prima fase del progetto EpiAir (2001-2005). PRINCIPALI MISURE DI OUTCOME: sono stati considerati i ricoveri ospedalieri urgenti per malattie cardiache, cerebrovascolari e respiratorie per tutte le fasce di età. I ricoveri per cause respiratorie sono stati analizzati separatamente anche per la fascia di età 0-14 anni. L’esposizione è stata valutata per incremento sia di 10 µg/m3 sia pari all’intervallo interquartile (IQR) della concentrazione di ciascun inquinante. RISULTATI:considerando un incremento di 10 µg/m3 per inquinante, per il PM10 è stato osservato un incremento percentuale di rischio per patologie cardiache dello 0,34% a lag 0 (IC95% 0,04-0,63), e per patologie respiratorie dello 0,75% a lag 0-5 (IC95% 0,25-1,25). Per il PM2.5 l’incremento percentuale di rischio per patologie respiratorie è risultato dell’1,23% a lag 0-5 (IC95% 0,58-1,88). Per l’NO2 la stima di effetto per patologie cardiache è risultata dello 0,57% a lag 0 (IC95% 0,13-1,02), e per patologie respiratorie dell’1,29% a lag 0-5 (IC95% 0,52-2,06). L’ozono non è risultato positivamente associato né alle patologie cardiache né a quelle respiratorie (a differenza del periodo 2001-2005). CONCLUSIONE: i risultati dello studio confermano l’effetto a breve termine dell’inquinamento atmosferico da PM10, PM2.5 e NO2 sulla morbosità, in particolare respiratoria, nelle città italiane. Barcelona, at least since 1992 has not been immune to it. The latest arrivals come from former socialist countries, especially from the People's Republic of China and Russia, with more concentrated Chinese different localization strategies. The consequences of these new appropriations of urban space are restricting access to the housing market to the citizens and the formation of a European model of Chinatown.

In 2010, an international group of 35 sea turtle researchers refined an initial list of more than 200 research questions into 20 metaquestions that were considered key for management and conservation of sea turtles. These were classified under 5 categories: reproductive biology, biogeography, population ecology, threats and conservation strategies. To obtain a picture of how research is being focused towards these key questions, we undertook a systematic review of the peer-reviewed literature (2014 and 2015) attributing papers to the original 20 questions. In total, we reviewed 605 articles in full and from these 355 (59%) were judged to substantively address the 20 key questions, with others focusing on basic science and monitoring. Progress to answering the 20 questions was not uniform, and there were biases regarding focal turtle species, geographic scope and publication outlet. Whilst it offers some meaningful indications as to effort, quantifying peer-reviewed literature output is ob viously not the only, and possibly not the best, metric for understanding progress towards informing key conservation and management goals. Along with the literature review, an international group based on the original project consortium was assigned to critically summarise recent progress towards answering each of the 20 questions. We found that significant research is being expended towards global priorities for management and conservation of sea turtles. Although highly variable, there has been significant progress in all the key questions identified in 2010. Undertaking this critical review has highlighted that it may be timely to undertake one or more new prioritizing exercises. For this to have maximal benefit we make a range of recommendations for its execution. These include a far greater engagement with social sciences, widening the pool of contributors and focussing the questions, perhaps disaggregating ecology and conservation.

Throughout this article the three authors collect their work and experiences in Raval with the main objective to debate the methods, techniques and concepts of Urban Geography in the analysis and understanding of contemporary cities. In a more or less chronological presentation they look to a conclusion on a critical evaluation of the different academic publications in order to know this neighbourhood and to analyse their possible consequences on everyday life of the inhabitants., El Raval de Barcelona se ha convertido en uno de los barrios más estudiados de la ciudad. En este artículo los autores aprovechan sus experiencias y trabajos sobre el barrio para reflexionar sobre les herramientas y los conceptos de la Geografía urbana en el análisis y comprensión de las ciudades contemporáneas. De forma casi cronológica se presentan estas reflexiones que culminan en un balance desapasionado de las aportaciones que se han hecho desde la Academia para el conocimiento del barrio y sobre las repercusiones que estas aportaciones pueden tener en la vida de sus habitantes.
