1. Interpolation-Free Deep Learning for Meteorological Downscaling on Unaligned Grids Across Multiple Domains with Application to Wind Power

Abstract

As climate change intensifies, the shift to cleaner energy sources becomes increasingly urgent. With wind energy production set to accelerate, reliable wind probabilistic forecasts are essential to ensure its efficient use. However, since numerical weather prediction models are computationally expensive, probabilistic forecasts are produced at resolutions too coarse to capture all mesoscale wind behaviors. Statistical downscaling, typically applied to enchance the resolution of climate model simulations, presents a viable solution with lower computational costs by learning a mapping from low-resolution (LR) variables to high-resolution (HR) meteorological variables. Leveraging deep learning, we evaluate a downscaling model based on a state-of-the-art U-Net architecture, applied to an ensemble member from a coarse-scale probabilistic forecast of wind velocity. The architecture is modified to incorporate (1) a learned grid alignment strategy to resolve LR-HR grid mismatches and (2) a processing module for multi-level atmospheric predictors. To extend the downscaling model's applicability from fixed spatial domains to the entire Canadian region, we assess a transfer learning approach. Our results show that the learned grid alignment strategy performs as well as conventional pre-processing interpolation steps and that LR wind speed at multiple levels is sufficient as a predictor, enabling a more compact architecture. Additionally, they suggest that extending to new spatial domains using transfer learning is promising, and that downscaled wind velocities demonstrate potential in improving the detection of wind power ramps, a critical phenomenon for wind energy.

4. Uncertainties in the pasta-phase properties of catalysed neutron stars

Abstract

The interior of a neutron star is expected to exhibit different states of matter. In particular, complex non-spherical configurations known as `pasta' phases may exist at the highest densities in the inner crust, potentially having an impact on different neutron-star phenomena. We study the properties of the pasta phase and the uncertainties in the pasta observables which are due to our incomplete knowledge of the nuclear energy functional. To this aim, we employed a compressible liquid-drop model approach with surface parameters optimised either on experimental nuclear masses or theoretical calculations. To assess the model uncertainties, we performed a Bayesian analysis by largely varying the model parameters using uniform priors, and generating posterior distributions with filters accounting for both our present low-density nuclear physics knowledge and high-density neutron-star physics constraints. Our results show that the nuclear physics constraints, such as the neutron-matter equation of state at very low density and the experimental mass measurements, are crucial in determining the crustal and pasta observables. Accounting for all constraints, we demonstrate that the presence of pasta phases is robustly predicted in an important fraction of the inner crust. We estimate the relative crustal thickness associated with pasta phases as $R_{\rm pasta}/R_{\rm crust}=0.128\pm 0.047$ and the relative moment of inertia as $I_{\rm pasta}/I_{\rm crust}=0.480\pm 0.137$. Our findings indicate that the surface and curvature parameters are more influential than the bulk parameters for the description of pasta observables. We also show that using a surface tension that is inconsistent with the bulk functional leads to an underestimation of both the average values and the uncertainties in the pasta properties, thus highlighting the importance of a consistent calculation of the nuclear functional., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics. 5. Inner crust of a neutron star at crystallization in a multi-component approach

Abstract

The possible presence of amorphous and heterogeneous phases in the inner crust of a neutron star is expected to reduce the electrical conductivity of the crust, with potentially important consequences on the magneto-thermal evolution of the star. In cooling simulations, the disorder is quantified by an impurity parameter which is often taken as a free parameter. We aim to give a quantitative prediction of the impurity parameter as a function of the density in the crust,performing microscopic calculations including up-to-date microphysics of the crust. A multi-component approach is developed at finite temperature using a compressible liquid drop description of the ions with an improved energy functional based on recent microscopic nuclear models and optimized on extended Thomas-Fermi calculations. Thermodynamic consistency is ensured by adding a rearrangement term and deviations from the linear mixing rule are included in the liquid phase. The impurity parameter is consistently calculated at the crystallization temperature as determined in the one-component plasma approximation for the different functionals. Our calculations show that at the crystallization temperature the composition of the inner crust is dominated by nuclei with charge number around $Z \approx 40$, while the range of the $Z$ distribution varies from about 20 near the neutron drip to about 40 closer to the crust-core transition. This reflects on the behavior of the impurity parameter that monotonically increases with density up to around 40 in the deeper regions of the inner crust. Our study shows that the contribution of impurities is non-negligible, thus potentially having an impact on the transport properties in the neutron-star crust. 7. An Ethics Action Plan for Rare Disease Care: Participatory Action Research Approach

BackgroundOwing to their low prevalence, rare diseases are poorly addressed in the scientific literature and clinical practice guidelines. Thus, health care workers are inadequately equipped to provide timely diagnoses, appropriate treatment, and support for these poorly understood conditions. These clinical tribulations are experienced as moral challenges by patients, jeopardizing their life trajectories, dreams, and aspirations. ObjectiveThis paper presents an ethical action plan for rare disease care and the process underlying its development. MethodsThis action plan was designed through an ethical inquiry conducted by the Ethics and Rare Diseases Working Group, which included 3 patient partners, 2 clinician researchers, and 1 representative from Québec’s rare disease association. ResultsThe plan is structured into 4 components. Component A presents the key moral challenges encountered by patients, which are the lack of knowledge on rare diseases among health care workers, the problematic attitudes that it sometimes elicits, and the distress and powerlessness experienced by patients. Component B emphasizes a vision for patient partnership in rare disease care characterized by open-mindedness, empathy, respect, and support of patient autonomy from health care workers. Component C outlines 2 courses of action prompted by this vision: raising awareness among health care workers and empowering patients to better navigate their care. Component D compares several interventions that could help integrate these 2 courses of action in rare disease care. ConclusionsOverall, this action plan represents a toolbox that provides a review of multiple possible interventions for policy makers, hospital managers, practitioners, researchers, and patient associations to critically reflect on key moral challenges experienced by patients with rare diseases and ways to mitigate them. This paper also prompts reflection on the values underlying rare disease care, patient experiences, and health care workers’ beliefs and behaviors. Health care workers and patients were the primary beneficiaries of this action plan.

10. Crystallization of the inner crust of a neutron star and the influence of shell effects

Abstract

Context. In the cooling process of a non-accreting neutron star, the composition and properties of the crust are thought to be fixed at the finite temperature where nuclear reactions fall out of equilibrium. A lower estimation for this temperature is given by the crystallization temperature, which can be as high as $\approx 7\times 10^9$ K in the inner crust, potentially leading to sizeable differences with respect to the simplifying cold-catalyzed matter hypothesis. Aims. We extend the recent work by Fantina et al. (2019) on the outer crust, to the study of the crystallization of the inner crust and the associated composition in the one-component plasma approximation. Methods. The finite temperature variational equations for non-uniform matter in both the liquid and the solid phases are solved using a compressible liquid-drop approach with parameters optimized on four different microscopic models which cover the present uncertainties in nuclear modeling. Results. We consider separately the effect of the different nuclear ingredients with their associated uncertainties, namely the nuclear equation of state, the surface properties in the presence of a uniform gas of dripped neutrons, and the proton shell effects arising from the ion single-particle structure. Our results suggest that the highest source of model dependence comes from the smooth part of the nuclear functional. Conclusions. We show that shell effects play an important role at the lowest densities close to the outer crust, but the most important physical ingredient to be settled for a quantitative prediction of the inner crust properties is the surface tension at extreme isospin values., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

11. Bayesian analysis of the crust-core transition with a compressible liquid-drop model

Abstract

The crust-core phase transition of neutron stars is quantitatively studied within a unified meta-modelling of the nuclear Equation of State (EoS). The variational equations in the crust are solved within a Compressible Liquid Drop (CLD) approach, with surface parameters consistently optimized for each EoS set on experimental nuclear mass data. When EoS parameters are taken from known Skyrme or RMF functionals, the transition point of those models is nicely reproduced. A model-independent probability distribution of EoS parameters and of the transition density and pressure is determined with a Bayesian analysis, where the prior is given by an uncorrelated distribution of parameters within the present empirical uncertainties, and constraints are applied both from neutron star physics and ab-initio modelling. We show that the characteristics of the transition point are largely independent of the high density properties of the EoS, while ab-initio EoS calculations of neutron and symmetric matter are far more constraining. The most influential parameter for the determination of the transition point governs the surface properties of extremely neutron rich matter, and it is strongly unconstrained. This explains the large dispersion of existing predictions of the transition point. Only if the surface tension is fixed to a reasonable but somewhat arbitrary value, strong correlations with isovector parameters ($L_{sym},K_{sym}$ and $Q_{sym}$) are recovered. Within the present experimental and theoretical uncertainties on those parameters, we estimate the transition density as $n_t= 0.072\pm 0.011$ fm$^{-3}$ and the transition pressure as $P_t=0.339\pm0.115$ MeV fm$^{-3}$., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

Background and aims: Heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH) is increasingly better diagnosed and treatments can improve the cardiovascular prognosis. We evaluated the long-term cardiovascular risk of HeFH using the French REgistry of Familial hypERCHOLesterolemia (REFERCHOL). Methods: We studied HeFH patients diagnosed genetically and clinically by the Dutch Lipid Clinic Network (DLCN) criteria in all lipid clinics across the country and their 5-year risk of cardiovascular events (all fatal and non-fatal acute coronary, cerebral and peripheral arterial disease events, aortic valve replacement surgery) using the French national health data system. Results: The database comprised 3202 individuals, 2010 (62.8%) with genetically verified HeFH and 1192 (37.2%) a DLCN score ≥6. Of these individuals, 2485 (77.6%) were in primary prevention and 717 (22.4%) in secondary prevention. The incidence of cardiovascular events was 24.58 per 1000 person-years for the overall sample, 19.15 in primary prevention and 43.40 in secondary prevention. The incidence of myocardial infarction, cerebral infarction and death was 16.32 per 1000 person-years for the overall sample, 12.93 in primary prevention and 28.08 in secondary prevention. The incidence of aortic valve replacement was 1.78 per 1000 person-years. In the overall sample, at inclusion, 41% were not treated for LDL cholesterol, 48% of these in primary prevention and 20% in secondary prevention and high-dose statins were used by only 24% of individuals, 15% of these in primary prevention and 45% in secondary prevention. Conclusions: The incidence of cardiovascular events in HeFH is high and lipid-lowering treatment is far from optimal. The cardiovascular risk of HeFH is underestimated and patients are inadequately treated.

Abstract

We propose a statistical model suitable for large spatio-temporal data sets exhibiting complex patterns such as simulated by physics-based hydraulic models over high resolution (HR) 2D meshes. Although necessary for impact studies such as urban flood hazard assessment, their long computation times limit their applicability leading to the development of statistical models that may emulate them quickly. Our model draws from the strengths of multi-resolution analysis and relies on an extension of the lifting scheme, a flexible implementation of discrete wavelet transforms, for spatio-temporal data. The extended lifting scheme exploits the idea that dominant spatial features, that may be identified with clustering, remain present through time. An easily interpretable non-parametric representation can be derived from the lifting scheme by combining a smoothed version of the data (obtained by simple averaging) with details (given by local regression residuals). A generative algorithm is built by introducing the information provided by a low resolution model, whose computation times are orders of magnitude smaller, yielding a downscaling model. This downscaling model assumes that sufficiently representative HR spatial patterns can be inferred from the training set. Our model is applied to a 2D dam break experiment using a synthetic urban configuration and to a field-scale test case simulating the propagation of a dike break flood wave into a Sacramento urban area. A comparison, carried out with spatial interpolation schemes and with a variant of our model based on principal component analysis, shows that the spatio-temporal lifting scheme based model is better at reproducing extreme events.

Abstract

The influence of the uncertainties of the equation of state empirical parameters on the neutron stars crust-core phase transition is explored within a meta-modeling approach, in which the energy per particle is expanded as a Taylor series in density and asymmetry around the saturation point. The phase transition point is estimated from the intersection of the spinodal instability region for dynamical fluctuations with the chemical equilibrium curve. Special attention is paid to the inclusion of high-order parameters of the Taylor series and their influence on the transition point. An uncorrelated prior distribution is considered for the empirical parameters, with bulk properties constrained through effective field theory predictions, while the surface parameters are controlled from a fit of nuclear masses using the extended Thomas Fermi approximation. The results show that the isovector compressibility $K_{sym}$ and skewness $Q_{sym}$ have the most significant correlations with the transition point, along with the previously observed influence of the $L_{sym}$ parameter. 19. General predictions for the neutron star crustal moment of inertia

Abstract

The neutron star crustal EoS and transition point properties are computed within a unified meta-modeling approach. A Bayesian approach is employed including two types of filters: bulk nuclear properties are controlled from low density effective field theory (EFT) predictions as well as the present knowledge from nuclear experiments, while the surface energy is adjusted on experimental nuclear masses. Considering these constraints, a quantitative prediction of crustal properties can be reached with controlled confidence intervals and increased precision with respect to previous calculations: {$\approx 11\%$} dispersion on the crustal width and {$\approx 27\%$} dispersion on the fractional moment of inertia. The crust moment of inertia is also evaluated as a function of the neutron star mass, and predictions for mass and radii are given for different pulsars. The possible crustal origin of Vela pulsar glitches is discussed within the present estimations of crustal entrainment, disfavoring a large entrainment phenomenon if the Vela mass is above $1.4M_\odot$. Further refinement of the present predictions requires a better estimation of the high order isovector empirical parameters, e.g. $K_{sym}$ and $Q_{sym}$, and a better control of the surface properties of extremely neutron rich nuclei., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

35. Understanding Rare Disease Experiences Through the Concept of Morally Problematic Situations.

Abstract

Rare diseases, defined as having a prevalence inferior to 1/2000, are poorly understood scientifically and medically. Appropriate diagnoses and treatments are scarce, adding to the burden of living with chronic medical conditions. The moral significance of rare disease experiences is often overlooked in qualitative studies conducted with adults living with rare diseases. The concept of morally problematic situations arising from pragmatist ethics shows promise in understanding these experiences. The objectives of this study were to (1) acquire an in-depth understanding of morally problematic situations experienced by adults living with rare diseases in the province of Québec and (2) to develop an integrative model of the concept of morally problematic situations. To this end, an online survey targeting this population was developed through a participatory action research project. Respondents provided 90 long testimonies on the most important morally problematic situations they faced, often in healthcare settings. An integrative model was developed based on various qualitative analyses of these testimonies and relevant literature. The integrative model showcases that morally problematic situations have causes (i.e., contextual and relational factors, personal factors, jeopardized valuations), have affective repercussions (i.e., emotions and feelings, internal tensions), prompt action (i.e., through empowerment strategies leading to the evolution of situations), and elicit outcomes (i.e., factual consequences, residual emotions and feelings, positive or negative resolutions). In sum, this study advances understanding of the moral experiences of adults living with rare diseases while proposing a comprehensive conceptual tool to guide future empirical bioethics research on moral experiences.
