Abstract

Conversion of organosolv lignins isolated with and without an inorganic acid catalyst (H2SO4) from hard- and softwood (birch and spruce) into bio-oil through hydrothermal liquefaction has been investigated. Furthermore, fractions of the isolated bio-oils were catalytically deoxygenated to improve the bio-oil properties. As elucidated through NMR, both biomass source and extraction mode influence the bio-oil product distribution. 21. Laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry of diesel particulate matter with charge-transfer complexes

Abstract

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are often associated with complex matrixes such as exhaust diesel particulate matter (DPM), which complicates their study. In that case, laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry is one of the techniques which ensures their direct analysis in the solid state. We demonstrate in this paper that the use of charge-transfer [pi]-complexing agents allows us to selectively detect by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry PAHs adsorbed on diesel particles with high sensitivity. 2,4,7-trinitro-9-fluorenone and 7,7',8,8'-tetracyanoquinodimethane [pi]-acceptor compounds form charge-transfer complexes with PAHs and prevent their evaporation in the mass spectrometer during analysis. Moreover, the production of PAH molecular ions is dramatically increased by laser irradiation of these complexes at short wavelength (221.7 nm) and low power density (5 x [10.sup.6] W [cm.sup.-2]). This methodology is applied for the first time to the examination of DPM collected during the new European driving cycle for light-duty vehicles. Differentiation criteria may coherently be assigned to engine operating mode (engine temperature, driving conditions). DPM samples can also be easily distinguished in negative ions according to the high sensitivity of this detection mode to sulfate compounds.

Heteroleptic triphenylphosphine carbonyl palladium clusters of different nuclearities were prepared under mild conditions by only varying the amount of ligand (PPh(3)) used in the synthesis: three different clusters were successfully isolated after CO bubbling in a solution of [Pd(2)(dba)(3)] (dba = dibenzylideneacetone) with 3, 1 or 0.5 equiv of PPh(3), which led, respectively, to [Pd(4)(CO)(5)(PPh(3))(4)] (1), [Pd(10)(CO)(12)(PPh(3))(6)] (2) and [Pd(n)(CO)(x)(PPh(3))(y)] (3) (n approximate to 24). The molecular structures of compounds 1 and 2 were determined by X-ray crystallography. The metal cores in these compounds were shown to consist in a butterfly for 1 and a bridged octahedron for 2. Compound 3 was shown to be at the boundary between molecular clusters and colloidal particles with tentative formulation arising from characterization data. These three clusters and the known [Pd(10)(CO)(12)(PBu(3))(6)] and [Pd(12)(CO)(15)(PBu(3))(7)] were submitted to NaBH(4) reduction. The Pd(4) cluster 1 did not react. The colloidal Pd(n) species led to no isolable product. By contrast, the two Pd(10) and the Pd(12) clusters led to reduction products, isolated as NEt(4)(+) salts. In the case of the reduced Pd(12) cluster, its structure was resolved by X-ray crystallography: the metal core consists of a face-capped octahedron. A new class of porphyrins bearing thioglycosyl groups is presented in order to improve targeting of malignant cells and resistance to glycosidases. These compounds were synthesized in four steps. Abstract

International audience; Background: Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)-related myonecrosis is frequent and can affect the long-term prognosis of patients. To our knowledge, ticagrelor has not been evaluated in elective PCI and could reduce periprocedural ischaemic complications compared with clopidogrel, the currently recommended treatment. The aim of the ALPHEUS study was to examine if ticagrelor was superior to clopidogrel in reducing periprocedural myocardial necrosis in stable coronary patients undergoing high-risk elective PCI.Methods: The ALPHEUS study, a phase 3b, randomised, open-label trial, was done at 49 hospitals in France and Czech Republic. Patients with stable coronary artery disease were eligible for the study if they had an indication for PCI and at least one high-risk characteristic. Eligible patients were randomly assigned (1:1) to either ticagrelor (180 mg loading dose, 90 mg twice daily thereafter for 30 days) or clopidogrel (300-600 mg loading dose, 75 mg daily thereafter for 30 days) by use of an interactive web response system, and stratified by centre. The primary outcome was a composite of PCI-related type 4 (a or b) myocardial infarction or major myocardial injury and the primary safety outcome was major bleeding, both of which were evaluated within 48 h of PCI (or at hospital discharge if earlier). The primary analysis was based on all events that occurred in the intention-to-treat population. The trial was registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT02617290.Findings: Between Jan 9, 2017, and May 28, 2020, 1910 patients were randomly assigned at 49 sites, 956 to the ticagrelor group and 954 to the clopidogrel group. 15 patients were excluded from the ticagrelor group and 12 from the clopidogrel group. At 48 h, the primary outcome was observed in 334 (35%) of 941 patients in the ticagrelor group and 341 (36%) of 942 patients in the clopidogrel group (odds ratio [OR] 0·97, 95% CI 0·80-1·17; p=0·75). The primary safety outcome did not differ between the two groups, but minor bleeding events were more frequently observed with ticagrelor than clopidogrel at 30 days (105 [11%] of 941 patients in the ticagrelor group vs 71 [8%] of 942 patients in the clopidogrel group; OR 1·54, 95% CI 1·12-2·11; p=0·0070).Interpretation: Ticagrelor was not superior to clopidogrel in reducing periprocedural myocardial necrosis after elective PCI and did not cause an increase in major bleeding, but did increase the rate of minor bleeding at 30 days. These results support the use of clopidogrel as the standard of care for elective PCI.Funding: ACTION Study Group and AstraZeneca.

Abstract

International audience; To investigate the in-situ response to a stress, grapevine leaves have been subjected to mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) experiments. The Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionisation (MALDI) approach using different matrices has been evaluated. Among all the tested matrices, the 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHB) was found to be the most efficient matrix allowing a broader range of detected stilbene phytoalexins. Resveratrol, but also more toxic compounds against fungi such as pterostilbene and viniferins, were identified and mapped. Their spatial distributions on grapevine leaves irradiated by UV show their specific colocation around the veins. Moreover, MALDI MSI reveals that resveratrol (and piceids) and viniferins are not specifically located on the same area when leaves are infected by Plasmopara viticola. Results obtained by MALDI mass spectrometry imaging demonstrate that this technique would be essential to improve the level of knowledge concerning the role of the stilbene phytoalexins involved in a stress event.
