Abstract

River basins were identified very early on as a key component of chemical fluxes from continents to oceans, driven by weathering and biogeochemical cycles in their basin. Fifty years ago, important riverine changes attributed to human impacts started to be studied at the global scale, an evolution which has been the foundation for Anthropocene studies in hydrosystems since 2000. However, the co-evolution of river basin systems and sociosystems remains poorly addressed, particularly over long periods ($>$100 y). Medium-sized river basins make it possible to perform such detailed analyses, which combines historical river fluxes, material flows, river ecology, environmental history and political ecology.Such an interdisciplinary approach at the scale of the Seine basin, undertaken by the PIREN-Seine research program, started in 1989, has shown how scientific and technological knowledge, environmental awareness, environmental regulations and policies, and political decisions have played a role on water quality during that period.

Abstract

Il saggio illustra l'interazione storicamente essenziale tra la città di Milano e le eccezionali prerogative idrogeologiche del sistema idrografico di cui si trova è al centro. Legame geografico, quella tra la città e le sue acque, ma soprattutto economico grazie a uno sviluppo agricolo che ha avuto nel sistema delle marcite la sua massima espressione produttiva, specialmente nel caso delle marcite irrigate e fertilizzate con le acque cloacali della roggia Vettabbia, il principale emissario cittadino. Di questo particolare sistema irriguo, come pure del sistema idrografico milanese in generale, viene ricostruito il progressivo degrado nel corso del XX secolo e la sua odierna riabilitazione.

International audience; This work presents a spectral measurement method coupled with an optical model of microalgal cells to retrieve the cell concentration and mean diameter of non diluted culture samples from a ballistic transmission measurement on the [400-750nm] spectral range. The AlgaSim simulation program was implemented to simulate the extinction cross sections of microalgal cells represented as spheres with concentric layers of different biological materials, and described by a set of physical and chemical parameters. The measurement system is composed of one integrating sphere specially designed to perform a sound measurement of the ballistic transmission, from which the spectral extinction coefficient of the sample algal suspension can be extracted. This study shows that from the measured extinction coefficient, by inverting AlgaSim simulation model, the concentration and mean diameter of two different monospecific microalgal cultures could be screened at different growth stages.

Abstract

© the Partner Organisations 2014.Novel biobased NonIsocyanate PolyUrethanes (NIPUs) were synthesized from dimer-based diamines and sebacic biscyclocarbonate in bulk, and without catalyst. All synthesized NIPUs present biobased contents around 80%. Biscyclocarbonates and final NIPUs were characterized by FTIR and NMR spectroscopy. A specific study was conducted to determine the best carbonate to amine ratio. The influence on the structures and properties of NIPUs with different average amine functionalities, varying from 2.0 to 2.2, was investigated by DSC, SEC and dynamic rheological analyses. Based on FTIR analyses, it was found that the stoichiometric ratio is optimal for the NIPU synthesis to obtain the highest molar masses with appropriate kinetics. However, the results show that the molar masses (up to 22000 g mol-1) were lower than conventional polyurethanes. A specific structuration due to a higher crosslink degree was observed when the average functionality of the diamine dimer increased. As expected, the glass transition temperature rises in this case. Crosslinked samples were synthesized with an average amine functionality of 2.15 and 2.2. A promising elastomer sample with elongation higher than 600% was then obtained. This journal is

Abstract

The effect of the immunosuppressive compound, cyclosporin A, and the corticosteroid, betamethasone, was investigated on eosinophil accumulation in guinea-pig lung tissue induced by antigen, platelet-activating factor (PAF) and leukotriene B4 (LTB4). The accumulation of eosinophils in the peribronchial area was evaluated on histological preparations. The lung sections were stained with Luna's reagent specific for eosinophil granule content. Oral treatment of the guinea-pigs with cyclosporin, 10 mg.kg-1 three times a day for two days, and 10 mg.kg-1 1 h before antigen challenge, significantly reduced the accumulation of eosinophils observed at 4 and 24 h, in the peribronchial area of sensitized guinea-pig lung. Betamethasone (3 mg.kg-1), administered orally 24 h and 1 h before antigen challenge elicited a moderate but significant reduction of antigen-induced eosinophil accumulation. Pretreatment of the guinea-pigs with cyclosporin or betamethasone elicited a marked inhibition of the accumulation of eosinophils in the peribronchial area induced by aerosolized PAF (100 micrograms.ml-1) or LTB4 (5 micrograms.ml-1). Since cyclosporin and betamethasone significantly inhibit the antigen-induced eosinophil accumulation, these results suggest that antigen-induced lung eosinophilia is dependent of T-lymphocytes. However, cyclosporin and betamethasone may also reduce the chemotactic activity of PAF and LTB4 on guinea-pig eosinophils.

Abstract

ACLN; Although rainwater recycling has been subjected to tax exoneration since 2006 for individuals, its use was approved, for interiors only, in August 2008. However, little consideration has been given to the roof runoff quality, its potential use, and to the maintenance procedures of the roof surface and the runoff recuperation tank. The products used for cleaning and maintenance of rooftops may be a major source of organic pollutants in the collected waters. After listing the products, four possible treatments were identified: primary cleaning, fungicide treatment, waterproofing and paint. Some of these specific products include a biocide action. Quaternary ammonium compounds and isothiazolinone derived compounds have been underlined. These both molecules are very toxic for aquatic organisms, with EC50 down of 1 mg.L-1. Moreover an investigation work shown that fungicide treatment and waterproofing are the two most current practices. Finally, it has been brought to light that several treatments are operated by unprofessional people, hence neither the products nor the methods used are easily recognizable.

Abstract

The analysis of a zooplankton long-term series (1974-99) in the Ligurian outlined the progressive dominance of the siphonophore Muggiaea atlantica on the congeneric species M. kochi. M. atlantica, is one of the main gelatinous carnivorous along the Ligurian coast, established with a high abundance in southern Adriatic in 1996, after a first recorded in February 1995. Nevertheless, there is no clear evidence of a progressive expansion of this species within the Mediterranean basin considering that regular monitoring during 1993-’ 95 in the Bay of Tunis indicated M. atlantica as a rare species. The relationship between increasing abundance of M. atlantica and hydrological changes driven by climatic forcing in the Ligurian and Southern Adriatic Sea could be hypothesised but further investigations including a more extended monitoring zones are still needed.
