Abstract

The investigation of hydrocarbon fractionation between oil and gas phases is of interest for several purposes in reservoir exploitation. In reservoir geochemistry, the evolution of light hydrocarbon fractions of oils may explain some migration phenomena. In gas injection projects, the preferred dissolution of some components in gas may alter the composition as well as the properties of the oil. Underground gas storage in depleted oil reservoirs may also be concerned by these problems. Results of several IFP studies are described here to illustrate and to quantify the phenomenon. Two of them, using real reservoir fluids, concern reservoir geochemistry, while the third, which is a swelling test, aimed to study gas injection, investigated a synthetic reservoir fluid with hydrocarbon components up to C30. Two pieces of equipment were used: a sapphire cell with a maximum pressure rating of 400 bar and a high pressure apparatus called Hercule with a maximum pressure of 1500 bar. For each fluid, the saturation pressure was measured. For various pressure levels below saturation, the coexisting liquid and gas phases were sampled at constant pressure, and subsequently analyzed by gas chromatography. In the gas injection study, sampling was repeated with different quantities of injection gas. Compared to a n-paraffin with the same number of carbon atoms, aromatic hydrocarbons appear to stay preferentially in the liquid phase, as do cycloalkanes to a lesser extent. The gaseous phase is slightly enriched in isoalkanes. These fractionation effects are less pronounced near the critical region. These phenomena have been modeled with a cubic equation of state combined with a group contribution mixing rule. L'étude du fractionnement des hydrocarbures légers entre les phases gazeuses et liquides intéresse plusieurs domaines dans le cadre de l'exploitation des gisements. En géochimie de réservoir l'évolution de la composition de la fraction légère peut expliquer certains phénomènes de migration. Lors de l'injection de gaz, la dissolution préférentielle de certains constituants dans le gaz peut modifier la composition et le comportement le l'huile en place. Le stockage souterrain de gaz dans des réservoirs contenant encore de l'huile peut également être concerné par ce problème. Des études ont été menées à l'IFP, dans le cadre de différents projets, de façon à mettre en évidence ce phénomène et à le quantifier. Deux d'entre elles, qui concernent la géochimie de réservoir, ont été menées sur des fluides réels. La troisième étude, qui est un test de gonflement, concerne l'injection de gaz, le fluide considéré est un mélange synthétique comprenant des hydrocarbures jusqu'à C30. Les équipements utilisés sont, d'une part, une cellule saphir ayant une pression maximale d'utilisation de 400 bar, et d'autre part un équipement appelé Hercule dont la pression maximale d'utilisation est de 1500 bar. Pour chacun des fluides étudiés, la pression de saturation a été mesurée. Pour plusieurs paliers, inférieurs à la pression de saturation, les phases liquides et gazeuses à l'équilibre ont été prélevées à pression constante et analysées. Dans le cas de l'injection de gaz, les compositions à l'équilibre ont été déterminées pour des mélanges contenant des quantités variables de gaz. Par rapport aux n-alcanes de même nombre d'atomes de carbone, les hydrocarbures aromatiques restent préférentiellement dans la phase liquide, de même que les cycloalcanes pour lesquels ce phénomène est moins net toutefois. Par contre, la phase gazeuse s'enrichit légèrement en isoalcanes. Ces phénomènes de fractionnement sont moins marqués au voisinage de la région critique. Ils ont été modélisés au moyen d'une équation d'état cubique assortie d'une règle de mélange par contribution de groupes.

La prise en compte des teneurs en matière organique des roches-mères joue un rôle important dans l'évaluation du potentiel pétrolier des bassins sédimentaires. CARBOLOG est une nouvelle méthode d'estimation du contenu organique des roches-mères développée à l'Institut Français du Pétrole (lFP). Cette méthode tire partie des propriétés physiques de la matière organique qui se caractérise par une faible vitesse de propagation du son ainsi que par une résistivité élevée. Ces propriétés physiques peuvent être combinées de manière à permettre une estimation in situ du contenu en matière organique du sédiment. Dans un puits donné, la teneur en carbone organique est estimée par un traitement prenant conjointement en compte les valeurs fournies par deux types de diagraphies couramment disponibles dans les forages pétroliers : le Soniqueet la Résistivité . Pour mettre en oeuvre CARBOLOG à l'échelle d'un bassin sédimentaire il est nécessaire de procéder à une calibration basée sur le traitement de puits pour lesquels des données analytiques de teneur en carbone organique existent. Afin d'être validé, CARBOLOG a été testé avec succès sur des exemples appartenant à des bassins différents et présentant des faciès variés. Les résultats obtenus indiquent clairement la capacité de la méthode à estimer les teneurs en carbone organique et à rendre compte en continu de leurs évolutions verticales, pour des roches-mères marines, immatures ou faiblement matures. D'autres tests sont actuellement en cours sur des environnements de dépôt différents et des formations plus matures de manière à définir les possibilités et les limites de CARBOLOG dans l'ensemble des contextes géologiques généralement rencontrés. For assessing the petroleum potential of sedimentary basins, it is very important to take the organic matter contained in source rocks into consideration. CARBOLOG is a new method developed by Institut Français du Pétrole (IFP) for assessing the organic content of source rocks. This method makes use of the physical properties of organic matter, which is characterized by the slow propagation of sound as well as by high resistivity. These physical properties can be combined for making an in situ assessment of the organic matter contained in the sediment. In a given well, the organic carbon content is assessed by a treatment that jointly takes into account the values provided by two types of commonly available well logs in petroleum boreholes, i. e. sonic and resistivity logs. For implementing CARBOLOG on the scale of a sedimentary basin, a calibration has to be made based on the processing of analytical borehole data available for the organic carbon content. CARBOLOG was checked by being tested successfully on samples from different basins and having different facies. The results obtained clearly show the capacity of the method to assess organic carbon contents and to continuously indicate how they evolve vertically for immature or slightly mature marine source rocks. Other tests are currently being performed for different deposit environments and for more mature formations so as to define possibilities and limits of CARBOLOG in all the geological contexts generally encountered.

Le programme SIMSALT permet, à partir de fonctions sinusoïdales simulant des variations climatiques et eustatiques, de modéliser la sédimentation dans une maille élémentaire d'un bassin évaporitique en communication restreinte permanente avec l'océan, les arrivées d'eau marine se faisant par l'intermédiaire d'un seuil topographique. En fonction des salinités calculées, le programme détermine s'il y a précipitation de sels ainsi que les épaisseurs sédimentées. Les principaux résultats fournis sont représentés par des colonnes lithologiques en fonction des épaisseurs cumulées et en fonction du temps. Ce programme renferme également un module permettant de tester des fonctions simulant la production-dégradation de la matière organique. Ce modèle a été appliqué à une partie de la série évaporitique d'âge Eocène supérieur - Oligocène inférieur du bassin de Mulhouse. L'application du modèle aux cyclothèmes carottés du sondage Max montre que la sédimentation évaporitique et organique peut être contrôlée principalement par des variations climatiques résultant de la somme de trois sinusoïdes, respectivement de période de l'ordre de 13000, 500 et 100 ans, associées à des variations eustatiques de période 13000 ans déphasées par rapport aux variations climatiques de même période. Avec le modèle SIMSALT, il est donc possible de reconnaitre les influences respectives de l'eustatisme et du climat sur la sédimenation évaporitique et organique dans un bassin en communication restreinte avec le domaine marin. The SIMSALT program takes sinusoidal functions simulating climatic and eustatic variations and uses them to model sedimentation in an elementary mesh of an evaporitic basin in permanent restricted communication with the ocean, with arrivals of seawater being determined via a topographic threshold (Fig. 1). For this, the mesh is assumed to be made up of several superposed elements (Fig. 2, i. e. a lower body of salt water (salt saturated), an upper body of salt water (with varying salinity) and sometimes at the surface a body of low-salt water linked to the supply of continental water. The lower body of salt water, called captive brine , is defined as the water layer underneath the threshold. Its height during time depends on the difference between the depth of the sediments deposited and the subsidence. We will assume that the depth of the basin (and hence the subsidence) is always sufficient for the captive brineto be able to exist. The upper body of salt water, called active body of water , is defined as the salt water layer located topographically above the threshold. It is in communication with the transfer zone or the open marine domain/basin . Its height during time thus depends on eustatic variations. The body of low-salt water corresponds to a body of pellicular water whose existence is defined by the presence or absence of influxes of fresh continental water in the mesh. On the scale of the basin, this body of low-salt water has a geographic extension that is governed by the regional hydrologic balance (influxes of continental water and evaporation). It may not exist at the level of the mesh considered, and its presence at the top is linked to the very strong contrast of density between the low-salt water and the underlying brines. In the model, sedimentation as a function of time is governed by the alternating passage of the regional hydrologic balance between the two states:(a) State 1 ( dryperiod) in which the volume of continental water supplied to the top of the mesh is lower than the volume of water evaporated. There is no body of low-salt water, and sedimentation is evaporitic. (b) State 2 ( wetperiod) in which the volume of continental water supplied to the top of the mesh is greater than the volume of water evaporated. A body of low-salt water exists at the top of the mesh, and sedimentation is shaly. The duration of each stateand the regional hydrologic balance during the two types of sedimentation are governed by the sums of sinusoidal functions. The program computes the contents of calcium sulfate, sodium chloride and potassium in the water in the mesh as a function of the hydrologic deficit or excess. Depending on the salinities computed, the program determines whether salts were precipitated as well as the sedimented thicknesses. The main results obtained are represented by lithologic columns as a function of the cumulative thicknesses and of time. This program also includes a module for testing the functions simulating the production-degradation of organic matter. The distribution and origin of organic matter depend on variations in organic production, on the rate of degradation of the organic matter and on its dilution by sedimentary influxes and chemical precipitates. By checking the lithology, the model can be used to determine the climatic and eustatic factors compatible with the sedimentary recording. It thus gives access to accumulation rates. When these rates are known, it thus becomes possible to test the validity of the assumed relations between productivity, degradation, climate and eustatism by comparing the results provided by the model with geochemical data. This model has been applied to part of the Upper Eocene-Lower Oligocene evaporitic series in the Mulhouse basin (France, Fig. 3). This part of the series (Sel IV-Sel V) corresponds to a succession of cyclothems formed by an alternation of sometimes potassic halite beds and argillo-anhydritic beds (Fig. 4). These beds were themselves formed by an alternation of evaporitic and shaly horizons. The organic matter, which is present solely in the shaly horizons, reveals a rhythmic vertical evolution (Fig. 5). The applications of the model to cored cyclothems from the Max borehole shows that evaporitic sedimentation can be controlled (Figs. 7-8) by :(a) Climatic variations resulting from the sum of three sine curves with respective periods of 13,000, 500 and 100 years. (b) Eustatic variations with a period of 13,000 years, out-of-phase in relation to climatic variations having the same period. (c) Variations having a longer period (about 26,000 years), which can be used to account for the vertical evolution of the cyclothems. To the scale of Sel IV and Sel V, a drift for the eustatic function must be added, corresponding to the regressive evolution of a third-order sequence, as well as a climatic drift to account for the evolution of the climate during the Oligocene. Tests performed on the organic productions corresponding to the cored interval show (Figs. 10-11) that :(a) High organic-matter production could have existed only during State 2. (b) The volume of continental organic matter is proportional to the influxes of fresh water. (c) The production of phytoplanktonic organic matter is limited to the fresh-water bodies and to the active-water bodies (which are situated in the euphotic zone). (d) Phytoplanktonic production in the active-water body depends on eustatic variations and on influxes of fresh water. (e) Production of bacterial origin is mainly situated in the two bodies of salt water and remains slight. With the SIMSALT model, it is thus possible to recognize the respective influences of eustatism and climate on evaporitic and organic sedimentation in a basin in limited communication with the marine domain.

3rd IIR International Conference on Sustainability and the Cold Chain, ICCC 2014, London, , 23-/06/2014 - 25/06/2014; International audience; Cleaning and disinfection (C&D) are among the most important hazard control measures in ready-to-eat food plants. The C&D process requires a huge volume of water that wets the surfaces of the food processing premises. The water remaining on these surfaces are susceptible to be the source of a microbial reservoir as wet media are favorable to microbial growth. To face this problem, a rapid drying after C&D is to be sought. For this purpose, the humidity control of the air in the premises is to be obtained. This paper compares the energetic performances of two humidity control techniques: a classical one based on dew point air treatment, and a second one based on the use of liquid desiccant (LiCl and CaCl2). The results show that the liquid desiccant system based on LiCl solution is very competitive compared to the classical dew point treatment.

Abstract

UNLABELLED Prostatic transurethral thermotherapy was evaluated clinically using the Prostcare microwave system of the Bruker Company, which uses a microwave radiometer to measure and control intraprostatic temperature. OBJECTIVES The aim of our study was to evaluate the immediate histological lesions induced in the prostatic tissue depending on the temperatures delivered to the prostate; the histological changes when adenectomy is carried out after thermotherapy, and the endoscopic appearance of the prostatic fossa 48 h, and 1, 2, 3 and 6 months after thermotherapy. METHODS Our study was divided into three stages: in the first stage, we conducted thermotherapy in 10 patients in whom suprapubic adenectomy was indicated. During thermotherapy, a multipoint fiber-optic receptor and two thermocouples were implanted into the prostage gland at a distance of 5-15 mm from the urethra. Adenectomy was carried out 10 min after thermotherapy; the second stage of our study concerned the changes seen over time. We heated adenomas using the same protocol and carried out adenectomy 24, 48, 72 h, and 1 week, 6 weeks and 3 months after thermotherapy, and lastly, we studied the endoscopic appearance after a single heating-session of 30 min by endoscopic controls at different times after thermotherapy (48 h, 1, 2, 3 and 6 months after thermotherapy). RESULTS Macroscopic appearance: necrotic lesions measured 30 mm in length on average. Necrosis was roughly circumferential. Immediate histological aspect: in all cases, histological examination showed coagulation necrosis with periurethral thromboses. Histological changes: at 8 days, necrosis intensity was maximal and histological structures were difficult to identify. Endoscopic appearance: 3 months after thermotherapy, the typical endoscopic appearance was a large periurethral cavity. There was a sharp demarcation between untreated areas and cicatricial tissue. CONCLUSION The efficacy of thermotherapy depends on the radiometric temperature, which should reach 47 degrees C (i.e. a temperature of 55-65 degrees C delivered to the prostate), and a rapid increase in temperature, i.e. in the power applied, which should reach the thermal radiometric level of 47 degrees C in 5 min. As soon as necrosis is obtained, the power is automatically reduced. Using this protocol, heating proves effective in 30 min.

Abstract

Une enquête par Internet a été menée pour mieux connaître les pratiques des consommateurs français en matière de réfrigération domestique, notamment sur ce qui concerne l'hygiène, afin d'établir des recommandations. L'enquête a porté sur un échantillon de convenance de personnes actives (n=809). L'analyse de l'enquête montre qu'il y a des progrès à réaliser pour améliorer la maîtrise des dangers microbiens. Seuls 37% des répondants s'assurent que la température de leur réfrigérateur est inférieure ou égale à +4°C. De même, seuls 37% des répondants emballent les aliments de façon systématique. Les éponges, connues pour être fréquemment fortement contaminées, sont utilisées par 89 % des enquêtés pour nettoyer leur réfrigérateur ce qui montre la nécessité de recommander une désinfection des éponges. Vingt sept pourcent des répondants utilisent l'eau de Javel (hypochlorite de sodium) mais elle est appliquée sans nettoyage préalable (21 % des utilisateurs) ou dans sa forme commerciale concentrée (7% des utilisateurs). La présence permanente de condensation d'eau sur les étagères, est notée chez 2% des personnes interrogées. Cette condensation suggère une mauvaise fermeture de la porte avec pour conséquence une plus forte consommation en énergie et une possibilité pour les bactéries de circuler et de se multiplier. Une recommandation importante est donc de vérifier que le joint de porte est en bon état et que la porte ferme bien. Soixante dix pourcent des répondants déclarent qu'ils ne mettent jamais d'aliments chauds dans le réfrigérateur. Cependant, de nombreuses personnes questionnées oralement avouent laisser des préparations refroidir une nuit à température ambiante avant de les placer dans le réfrigérateur. Il apparaît donc essentiel de recommander que les aliments périssables ne soient pas maintenus plus de deux heures à température ambiante. / A Web-enabled survey was conducted to improve knowledge of home refrigeration practices of French consumers (n = 809), with an emphasis on hygiene, and this information was used to establish recommendations. The survey targeted a convenience sample of working people. Analysis of the survey responses revealed that efforts should be directed toward improvement of microbiological control measures. Only 37% of respondents made sure the temperature in their refrigerator was 4 degrees C or below. Only 37% of respondents reported that they systematically wrapped food. Sponges, known to be frequently highly contaminated, were used by 89% of the respondents to clean their refrigerator, which indicates the need to recommend disinfection of sponges before they are used for cleaning. Twenty-seven percent of respondents used sodium hypochlorite (bleach), but it was applied without previous cleaning (21% of the users) or in the commercial concentrated form (7% of the users). The permanent presence of water condensation on the shelves was noted by 2% of respondents, suggesting imperfect closure of the door, with a consequence of higher energy consumption and water available for microbial circulation and growth. Thus, an important recommendation is to check the door gaskets and to ensure the tight closure of the door. Seventy percent of the respondents declared that they never put warm or hot food in the refrigerator. However, many people, when orally questioned, acknowledged that they leave dishes at ambient temperature overnight before putting them in the refrigerator. Abstract

Increased plasma and blood viscosity are usually associated with pathological conditions; however there are several situations in which the elevation of both parameters results in increased perfusion and the lowering of peripheral vascular resistance. In extreme hemodilution blood viscosity is too low and insufficient to maintain functional capillary density, a problem that in experimental studies is shown to be corrected by increasing plasma viscosity up to 2.2 cP. This effect is mediated by Nitric oxide (NO) production via restoration of shear stress at the endothelium as shown by microelectrode perivascular measurements of NO concentration. Moderate elevations of blood viscosity by increasing hematocrit (approximately 10% of baseline) result in reductions of blood pressure by 10 mmHg of baseline. This effect is also NO mediated since it is absent after N-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) treatment and in endothelial NO synthase deficient mice. These results show that the rheological properties of plasma affect vessel diameter in the microcirculation leading to counterintuitive responses to the increase in viscosity.
