- Abstract
Reflection is critical for adolescents' problem solving and learning in game-based learning environments (GBLEs). Yet challenges exist in the literature because most studies lack a theoretical perspective and clear operational definition to inform how and when reflection should be scaffolded during game-based learning. In this paper, we address these issues by studying the quantity and quality of 120 adolescents' written reflections and their relation to their learning and problem solving with Crystal Island, a GBLE. Specifically, we: (1) define reflection and how it relates to skill and knowledge acquisition; (2) review studies examining reflection and its relation to problem solving and learning with emerging technologies; and (3) provide direction for building reflection prompts into GBLEs that are aligned with the learning goals built into the learning session (e.g., learn about microbiology versus successfully solve a problem) to maximize adolescents' reflection, learning, and performance. Overall, our findings emphasize how important it is to examine not only the quantity of reflection but also the depth of written reflection as it relates to specific learning goals. We discuss the implications of using game-learning analytics to guide instructional decision making in the classroom.

- Abstract
Game-based learning environments are designed to provide effective and engaging learning experiences for students. Predictive student models use trace data extracted from students' in-game learning behaviors to unobtrusively generate early assessments of student knowledge and skills, equipping game-based learning environments with the capacity to anticipate student outcomes and proactively deliver adaptive scaffolding or notify instructors. Reflection is a key component of self-regulated learning, and it is critical in effective learning. However, there is currently limited work exploring the utility of reflection for inducing accurate predictive student models. This article presents a predictive student modeling framework that leverages natural language responses to in-game reflection prompts to predict student learning outcomes in a game-based learning environment for middle school microbiology, CRYSTAL ISLAND. With data from a pair of classroom studies involving 118 middle school students, we investigate the accuracy of early prediction models that utilize features extracted from student trace data combined with word embedding-based representations (i.e., GloVe, ELMo) of student reflection responses. We evaluate the accuracy of the predictive models over time using data from incremental segments of each student's interaction with the game-based learning environment, and we compare against models that omit student reflection features. Results reveal that models encoding students' natural language reflections with ELMo word embeddings yield significantly improved accuracy compared to other representations, with the greatest accuracy demonstrated by an ensemble of predictive models. We discuss the implications of these results for the design of game-based learning environments.

- Abstract
This qualitative case study examined the homeschool STEM educational activities and the role of the parent in those activities. Twenty-nine homeschooling parents from within a purposefully selected homeschool cooperative learning group in a southern community in the United States participated in the study. Data were collected using an open-ended questionnaire, which was then followed up with observations, interviews, and collection of documents. Analysis of the data pointed to an eclectic mix of STEM educational activities including both curricular activities such as online courses, tutors, and self-study, as well as curriculum extensions such as field trips and local STEM clubs and teams. Parents in this case study depended heavily on community resources available to them to provide these educational activities for their students. Parents played multiple roles in their child's education including the role of facilitator, the role of counsellor, and the role of presenter or lecturer.

- Abstract
Using a qualitative case study approach, this study looked at the educational activities that constitute a typical day in a homeschool family and the role that the parent has within those activities. Three homeschooling families with high school students in a single community in a southern state in the United States participated in the case study. Data was collected using observations, field notes, interviews and artifacts. Analysis of the data pointed to an eclectic mix of instructional modalities and activities used by families. Students often participated in a variety of instructional activities such as online courses, private tutors, and self-taught classes through the use of a flexible daily schedule. Parents were seen to be more of a facilitator or director of educational activities for their children rather than the direct providers of instruction in the homeschool setting.

1. Lowland heath is a priority habitat for conservation, nowadays largely managed for biodiversity. Historically, prescribed burning has been the principal management tool, but there are increasing calls to substitute burning with cutting to improve biodiversity outcomes. However, poor understanding of potential impacts compromises decision making. 2. Our study was carried out in the New Forest National Park, the largest area of lowland heath in Europe. Using a multi-trophic approach, we compared the ecological impact of prescribed burning with two types of vegetation cutting (swiping and baling) as management tools for biodiversity outcomes for up to 20 years after management. Indicators included: Common Standards Monitoring assessment (CSM); vegetation species assemblage; below and above ground invertebrate biodiversity; and available food resources for two characteristic heathland birds - the Dartford Warbler Sylvia undata and the Nightjar Caprimulgus europaeus. 3. When compared with swiped sites, areas managed by prescribed burning resulted in: better habitat condition (assessed by CSM); higher cover of heathers; lower bracken cover; more areas of bare ground. We found no evidence that burning is detrimental for the investigated components of biodiversity. 4. Cutting by swiping did not replicate the benefits of burning. Swiping supported grassland conditions that suit non-heathland species. Baling resulted in habitat condition similar to prescribed burning, but restricted replication of baled sites limited our conclusions. However, swiped sites supported high invertebrate abundance and diversity, including food resources for Dartford Warbler and Nightjar.5. Synthesis and applicationsRemoving burning from the management programme is likely to reduce Heathland Condition. Biodiversity is encouraged by a mosaic of management and more mobile species, such as birds, will exploit the resources provided by several management techniques. Including some cutting in a rotational regime is likely to be beneficial although prescribed burning should form the majority of the management programme, Lowland heathland differs fundamentally from upland heathland/moorland and it is not easy to transfer the results. Current heathland Common Standards Monitoring assessment does not adequately assess wider biodiversity on protected areas but is effectively an assessment of vegetation feature condition. Including invertebrates in surveys provides a more nuanced assessment of heathland condition.

24. Professional Learning Communities' Impact on Science Teacher Classroom Practice in a Midwestern Urban School District
- Author
-
Carpenter, Dan
- Abstract
The purpose of this reputation-based, multiple-site case study was to explore professional learning communities' impact on teacher classroom practice. The goal of this research was to describe the administrator and teachers' perceptions with respect to professional learning communities as it related to teacher practice in their school. Educators and administrators were asked what types of practices teachers took from collaborative professional learning communities and tried in their classrooms. This reputation-based, multiple-site case study was important to Nebraska educators because many school districts had implemented professional learning communities in a variety of forms in the schools. There had been little, if any, investigation on what impact professional learning communities have had on teacher practice and the extent to which that had impacted students. This study focused on the teachers' perceptions of the impact professional learning communities had on their pedagogical practice as a result of collaboration and interactions in professional learning communities. This study involved three schools in one Midwestern school district. The schools and district had operated professional learning communities for 6 years. The researcher found that professional learning communities had impacted teacher practice in that teachers had changed what they do from a pedagogical standpoint, as a result of interactions and collaboration in professional learning communities. The extent to which teacher pedagogical practice had been impacted is open to judgment. The fact that teachers had positively changed their pedagogy as a result of professional learning community function, including collaboration and interactions in professional learning community groups, is not open to judgment, as that is the primary finding of this study. It's not Gasoline- Engine Car and Driver, it's Car and Driver. Former Lexus boss and new Toyota CEO Koji Sato has said he's considering a manual for the future Lexus electric supercar, and the company has a working prototype of such a thing in an electric Lexus UX. predicts ,soil biodiversity - Abstract
The site-level data frame and code to reproduce models in Burton et al. Land use and soil characteristics affect soil organisms differently from above-ground assemblages. Human activities, particularly land-use change and habitat degradation, are driving major changes in biodiversity worldwide. However, studies of such effects have overwhelmingly focused on above-ground taxa: the effects on soil biodiversity are less well known, despite the importance of soil organisms in developing soil structure, nutrient cycling and water drainage. Modelling data collated as part of the Projecting Responses of Ecological Diversity in Changing Terrestrial Systems (PREDICTS) project, we compared how the abundance of soil-dwelling and above-ground organisms responded to land-use and soil properties. We found that land use affects overall abundance differently in soil and above-ground assemblages. Abundance of soil organisms was markedly lower in cropland and plantation habitats than in primary vegetation and pasture. Soil properties influenced the overall abundance of soil biota in ways that differed among land uses, suggesting they shape both abundance and its response to land use. Soil properties also influenced the response of above-ground assemblages, but in ways that differed from their influence on soil assemblages. Our results caution against assuming that models or indicators derived from above-ground data can apply to soil assemblages, and highlight the potential value of incorporating soil properties into models of both soil and above-ground biodiversity.

The PREDICTS project—Projecting Responses of Ecological Diversity In Changing Terrestrial Systems (www.predicts.org.uk)—has collated from published studies a large, reasonably representative database of comparable samples of biodiversity from multiple sites that differ in the nature or intensity of human impacts relating to land use. We have used this evidence base to develop global and regional statistical models of how local biodiversity responds to these measures. We describe and make freely available this 2016 release of the database, containing more than 3.2 million records sampled at over 26,000 locations and representing over 47,000 species. We outline how the database can help in answering a range of questions in ecology and conservation biology. To our knowledge, this is the largest and most geographically and taxonomically representative database of spatial comparisons of biodiversity that has been collated to date; it will be useful to researchers and international efforts wishing to model and understand the global status of biodiversity.

- Abstract
The PREDICTS project-Projecting Responses of Ecological Diversity In Changing Terrestrial Systems (www.predicts.org.uk)-has collated from published studies a large, reasonably representative database of comparable samples of biodiversity from multiple sites that differ in the nature or intensity of human impacts relating to land use.

- Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine student attitudes toward science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) project-based learning (PBL). To guarantee the impact of STEM PBL on academic achievement, it is important to understand student attitudes toward STEM PBL. The initial survey consisted of 51 items, which were created by the authors and adapted/adjusted from previous studies. Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were employed to examine the psychometric properties of the instrument, specifically reliability and validity for student attitudes toward STEM PBL. As a result, 5 factors and 25 items were extracted. The 5 factors were “self regulated learning,” “collaborative learning environ- ment,” “interdisciplinary learning environment,” “technology-based learning,” and “hands-on activity.” Using the developed instrument, 785 Korean middle grade students were surveyed and showed a positive atti- tude toward five factors of STEM PBL. Given the valid and reliable (0.766–0.861) scores in this study, the developed survey might be used in investigating student attitude toward STEM PBL in other areas. However, others should examine the English translation for its psychometric properties before using it for research. In addition, educators might refer to the information on student attitude toward STEM PBL in designing STEM integrated lessons.

49. An Approach to Command and Control Using Emerging Technologies
- Author

AIR FORCE RESEARCH LAB ROME NY INFORMATION DIRECTORATE, Carpenter, Dan, AIR FORCE RESEARCH LAB ROME NY INFORMATION DIRECTORATE, and Carpenter, Dan
- Abstract
As technologies emerge they must somehow be brought (accredited, tested) to the battlefield. As new technologies come to the battlefield, the methods of command and control must be adapted to accommodate these new technologies and the information sharing they enable. Additionally, the traditional command and control paradigm must be changed to account for new capabilities. When new information types and sources are made available, legacy systems must be able to efficiently interoperate with or relay the data to key decision makers. The RISA team at the Air Force Research Laboratory has investigated these command and control issues with the introduction of the Android-based application for ground users, Android Tactical Assault Kit (ATAK), and the airborne Marti information management server. Additionally, the RISA team has made enhancements to existing command and control capabilities through the interaction of ATAK and Marti. Through working with human factors experts and tactical radio network users, the RISA team has found that adding the mobile computing platform to the tactical command and control infospace has significantly shortened the kill chain for tactical operations, as well as reduced the likelihood of fratricide in combat., Presented at the 18th International Command and Control Research and Technology Symposium (ICCRTS) C2 in Underdeveloped, Degraded and Denied Operational Environments held in Alexandria, VA, on 19-21 June 2013.
