Autoethnography addresses the need and desire to make the human sciences more human by writing in ways that are more poignant, touching, vulnerable, and heartfelt. Since social work is a field not only of facts but also of meanings and values, researchers should not be obliged to cling to a narrow range of methodologies and writing genres that may be scientifically acceptable but poorly suited to the broad objectives of the field. Concerned more with evocation than information, autoethnography enables researchers and practitioners to address what it feels like, and what it can mean, to be alive and living in a chaotic and uncertain world, and to show others how they might endure it and move forward. As we developed evocative autoethnography, we not only questioned the boundaries between social sciences and humanities, we tried to stretch and cross them in ways that would create new practitioners and new genres for representing lived experience appealing to the hearts and senses of readers as well as their intellects.

In March 2018, researcher Carolyn Ellis video recorded a short interview session with participant Jerry Rawicki for the purpose of describing the relationship that developed between them during their 9-year research collaboration. The authors present this video excerpt, the edited conversation from it, and discussion of what took place to explore the role that compassion might play in an interview relationship. They also suggest that in compassionate interviews, interruptions might be characterized as opportunities to know and participate in the life of the interviewee, rather than viewed as disruptive. Representing the perspective of the researcher and participant, this article demonstrates how compassionate relationships happen in real-life situations.

In this definitive reference volume, almost fifty leading thinkers and practitioners of autoethnographic research-from four continents and a dozen disciplines-comprehensively cover its vision, opportunities and challenges. Chapters address the theory, history, and ethics of autoethnographic practice, representational and writing issues, the personal and relational concerns of the autoethnographer, and the link between researcher and social justice. A set of 13 exemplars show the use of these principles in action. Autoethnography is one of the most popularly practiced forms of qualitative research over the past 20 years, and this volume captures all its essential elements for graduate students and practicing researchers.

OBJECTIVES: During the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, more patients require enteral nutrition (EN) while mechanically ventilated in the prone position (PP). Prone positioning may improve oxygenation in patients receiving mechanical ventilation; however, it is unclear how it affects EN adequacy and tolerance. This review explored how EN delivered in the PP impacts EN tolerance (vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal distention, or aspiration pneumonia) and adequacy (meeting estimated energy and protein requirements) in critically ill adults receiving mechanical ventilation. METHODS: A literature search was conducted in PubMed, CINAHL, Academic Search Premier, and Cochrane Library for English-language studies exploring EN administered in the PP published between 2000–2020. Studies that met inclusion criteria enrolled adult patients in intensive care units with acute respiratory distress syndrome or other respiratory conditions requiring mechanical ventilation, were cohort studies with ≥5 patients per study group, and had a dropout rate

This chapter defines and briefly synthesises the origins and goals of autoethnography. We review the burgeoning rise of interest in and application of autoethnography across the human sciences, advocate for the use of autoethnography as a research method in the library and information science (LIS) and demonstrate how to begin an evocative autoethnographic project. At its best, autoethnography is a form of vulnerable writing about lived experiences that connects with and engages readers in ways that resonate with their own lives. Using Lisa's experience of grieving, the loss of a best friend to cancer as an entry and case in point, the authors weave together story and theory to show how a researcher can produce an evocative and healing autoethnographic story that expresses the unfolding of the lived experience of grief in ways unlikely to be achieved in traditional forms of research.

Autoethnography began as a humble, adventurous attempt to break away from numbing and alienating writing practices by blurring boundaries between humanities and social sciences. Our goal was to create and legitimate a space for evocative depictions of lived experience bereft of excessive technical language. We conceived autoethnography as a narrative moral practice focused on decisive existential experiences of real people engaging in the art of living, seizing on love and joy, and struggling to cope with what life throws at them. In pursuit of a more human science, we encouraged and sanctioned forms of representing lived experiences that enable readers and audiences to bring their own mindful attention to other people’s experiences of love, grief, joy, injustice, forgiveness, and deep pain. In retrospect, we consider our autoethnographic project as a warm idea that gave meaning to our lives and the lives of people touched by our work. We are hopeful that narrative practices of autoethnography can continue to help people across the globe appreciate and cope with deep-rooted problems of poverty, inequality, climate change, homophobia, and racism demanding our attention today in the wake of COVID-19 and the murder of George Floyd. © 2021 selection and editorial matter, Tony E. Resumo Este artigo é uma narrativa pessoal de um drama familiar representado na sequência da morte do meu irmão, decorrente de um acidente de avião. Histórias “verdadeiras” como essa se encaixam no espaço entre ficção e ciências sociais, juntando escrita etnográfica e literária, e compreensão autobiográfica e sociológica. Meu objetivo é reposicionar os leitores em relação aos outros autores de textos de ciências sociais, reconhecendo o potencial para leituras opcionais e encorajando os leitores a “experienciarem uma experiência” que pode revelar não apenas como foi para mim, mas como poderia ser ou foi também para eles alguma vez. Esta forma experimental permite a pesquisadores e leitores reconhecerem e darem voz às suas próprias experiências emocionais e incentiva sujeitos etnográficos (coautores) a reivindicarem e escreverem suas próprias vidas. Abstract: This article is a personal narrative of a family drama enacted in the aftermath of my brother’s death in an airplane crash. “True” stories such as this fit in the space between fiction and social science, joining ethnographic and literary writing, and auto-biographical and sociological understanding. My goal is to reposition readers vis a vis authors of texts os social science by acknowledging potential for optional readings and encouraging readers to “experience and experience” that can reveal not only how it was for me, but how it could be or once was for them. This experimental form permits researchers and readers to acknowledge and give voice to their own emotional experiences and encourages ethnographic subjects (co-authors) to reclaim and white their own lives. Resumen: Este artículo es la narración personal del drama familiar ocurrido tras la muerte de mi hermano en un accidente aéreo. Historias “verdaderas” como esta se encajan en el limite de la ficción y las ciencias sociales, uniendo escritura etnográfica y literaria, y la comprensión autobiográfica y sociológica. Mi objetivo es reposicionar a los lectores en relación con los demás autores de textos de ciencias sociales, reconociendo el potencial de la lectura opcional y animar a los lectores a “experimentar una experiencia” que pueda revelar no solo cómo fue para mí, sino también como podría haber sido para ellos. In order to operate in a regulated world, researchers need to ensure compliance with ever-evolving landscape of information security regulations and best practices. This work explains the challenges of Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) and introduces a managed research ecosystem, REED+. The workflow of this cost effective framework is presented to demonstrate how controlled research data are processed to be compliant with one of the highest level of cybersecurity in a campus environment. The framework serves as a reference model for other institutions to support CUI research. The awareness and training program developed from this work will be shared with other institutions to build a bigger CUI ecosystem.

This chapter details the authors’ approach to doing autoethnographic research. After autoethnography is defined, its history and emergence are described within qualitative research in general and within psychology specifically. The chapter then proposes general guiding principles for those doing autoethnography, including using personal experience, acknowledging existing research, understanding and critiquing cultural experience, calling on insider knowledge, breaking silence, and maneuvering through pain, confusion, anger, and uncertainty. After a discussion of autoethnography as a process and as a product and as a method that can take a variety of representational forms, the chapter offers ways to evaluate and critique autoethnography. The chapter concludes with a discussion of autoethnography as an orientation to living and an approach that has the potential to make life better—for the writer, reader, participant, and larger culture.

Calciphylaxis is a potentially fatal disease caused by metastatic calcification of the small- and medium-sized blood vessels of the dermis and subcutis. It most commonly is seen in patients with renal disease requiring dialysis, but it also may be triggered by nonuremic causes in patients with known risk factors for calciphylaxis. We report a case of nonuremic calciphylaxis (NUC) occurring in the setting of multiple risk factors, including chronic corticosteroid use, obesity, rapid weight loss, and hypotension. A review of the literature also is provided with an in-depth discussion of the known risk factors and triggers of NUC.

This article extends the research of Jerry Rawicki and Carolyn Ellis who have collaborated for more than eight years on memories and consequences of the Holocaust. Focusing on Jerry’s memories of his experience during the Holocaust, they present dialogues that took place during five recorded interviews and follow-up conversations that reflect on the similarity of Hitler’s seizing of power in the 1930s to the meteoric rise of Donald Trump. Noting how issues of class and race were taking an increasingly prominent role in their conversations and collaborative writing, they also begin to examine discontent in the rural, White working class and Carolyn’s socialization within that community. These dialogues and reflections seek to shed light on the current political climate in America as Carolyn and Jerry struggle to cope with their fears and envision a hopeful path forward for their country.

This panel, which took place at International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry in May 2016, examines the experiences of five scholars who have retired from university life and the responses to the panel by two scholars anticipating that transition. Panelists discuss how and when they decided to retire; the role of the university, department, and profession in their post-university lives; and the kinds of activities and connections that sustain their identities and give their lives meaning. Their experiences suggest admiration for and a subtle critique of university life. Their words of wisdom offer support to those anticipating retirement in planning their transition from university life and considering what that life could and might be like.

This manifesto addresses how an autoethnographic perspective can be applied directly to the experiences of others in compassionate research. Compassionate research connects us with others, emphasizes what we can do for participants, and contributes to social justice. This article describes collaborative and compassionate research with a survivor of the Holocaust, outlines guiding premises, and suggests ways to think about and do this work.

As a young Jewish boy during the Holocaust, Jerry Rawicki was a courier for the Polish Underground in the Warsaw Ghetto. The Nazis murdered his father Abram, mother Sophie, and sister Stephanie. Passing as a Gentile, his surviving sister Fela worked in a coffee shop in Warsaw. Under the cover of groups leaving for hard labor outside the Ghetto, Jerry was able to surreptitiously steal away and attend to his assignments on the Polish side. Within the Ghetto, people were dying from dysentery, typhus, and starvation. Deportations were rampant and ominous rumors that death camps were the destinations, no matter how unbelievable, in time became a horrific reality. In January 1943, the Germans staged an action on a scale that foretold a total destruction of Jews in the Ghetto. The inhabitants’ refusal to obey orders to vacate their apartments stunned the Germans. Armed resistance, mostly skirmishes, forced the Germans to back off, but the euphoria of prevailing over the Germans did not last long. On the night of April 18, 1943, during Passover, the Germans came back with fury. The armed resistance, this time more organized, held off the onslaught for over a week. But the fighters could not match the German firepower that turned the Warsaw Ghetto into a burning inferno. This story describes Jerry’s actions on that night, at the age of fifteen, and afterwards, when he found hope in the midst of despair.

Limited data is available on the micronutrient intake and adequacy in preschool children enrolled in family child care homes (FCCH). The goal of this paper is to describe the micronutrient adequacy relative to age-specific recommendations of preschool-aged children (aged 2&ndash, 5 years) attending FCCH in Rhode Island (RI). Dietary data among younger preschoolers (aged 2&ndash, 3 years), n = 245) and older preschoolers (aged 4&ndash, 5 years), n = 121) in 118 RI FCCH (N = 366 children) were analyzed. Nutrient adequacy was assessed as the amount of nutrient per 1000 kcal of the diet that would meet the Institute of Medicine nutrient requirements (critical nutrient density), and it was compared to the observed nutrient densities of the children. The sodium:potassium ratio was also calculated. For most micronutrients, the observed density met or exceeded the recommendation, meaning the children&rsquo, s intake was adequate. However, a high proportion of children had nutrient densities under the recommendation for vitamins D, E, K, and potassium (86.1%, 89.1%, 70.8%, and 99.2% of children, respectively). The mean vitamin B12, potassium, and zinc densities were statistically higher in younger vs. older preschoolers (p &lt, 0.05 for all). Low densities in calcium and vitamins K and B5 were more frequent in older children vs. younger children (p &lt, 0.05). In addition, older preschoolers had a higher sodium:potassium ratio than younger children (p &lt, 0.05). The micronutrient intake density was adequate for most nutrients. However, intake of some nutrients was of concern. Further attention to training and compliance in FCCH may improve the diet quality of those cared for in these settings.
