International audience; Depuis 2000, nous compilons les données sur les terrains géologiques les plus superficiels, qui résultent de processus supergènes, i.e. d’interactions chimiques et/ou physiques de la lithosphère en surface avec l'hydrosphère, l'atmosphère et la biosphère. Ce sont les régolithes autochtone (altérites sensu lato) et allochtone (dépôts sédimentaires continentaux à côtiers). Nous synthétisons et restituons ces informations sous la forme de deux cartes géologiques numériques de la France métropolitaine à l’échelle du 1/1 000 000, consultables sur le site infoterre.brgm.fr dans la couche "Géologie de la surface".Ces cartes sont utiles en amont des études dans les domaines des géosciences appliquées tels qu’aménagement des territoires (ruraux et urbains), environnement, gestion des risques et ressources de proche surface (0 à 100 m). Elles intègrent les données issues de deux sources principales : les cartes géologiques à 1/50 000 et les études publiées. Elles évoluent au fil du temps, au gré des parutions et de la collecte de nouvelles données. Elles intègrent progressivement les formats de production du Référentiel Géologique de la France.La version d’origine (Lacquement et al, 2010) a été mise à jour en 2013 (Tissoux et al, inédit). La version 2021 inclut de nouvelles informations qui résultent des travaux de modélisation de la géométrie des formations meubles de surface sur les roches indurées (sédimentaires ou issues de l’altération du socle anté-triasique). Les travaux ont été réalisés à partir de l’interpolation des données de forages en Bretagne et pro parte dans les Pays-de-la-Loire (à la maille de 250 m).La compilation des informations cartographiques disponibles permet d’aboutir à la fabrication des deux cartes géologiques identifiant la source des données (données de terrain ou modélisation géométrique). A lower Miocene coarse conglomerate that crops out in the Nepoui Peninsula does not represent the base of the marine transgression that followed obduction in New Caledonia. Instead, the conglomeratic alluvial fan that contains peridotite cobbles and reworked weathering products records a short-lived episode of terrestrial erosion intercalated between two intervals of subsidence marked by marine carbonate deposition. Considering the Miocene sea level evolution reported in the literature, it is concluded that neither lower Miocene transgression nor erosion were driven by sea level variation. In contrast, a southeastward propagating slab tear that initiated at the latitude of the high pressure/low temperature metamorphic complex of northern New Caledonia likely generated east to west tilting of New Caledonia, subsidence along the West Coast and hence fringing reef development together with moderate erosion of older regolith. Coincidence between conglomerate deposition and hence prominent erosion that closely followed emplacement of postobduction granitoids influenced by a slab window suggests a genetic link. Therefore, it is concluded that short-lived lower Miocene erosion was due to slab breakoff and subsequent uplift that occurred at ~ 22 Ma. Lower Miocene erosion profoundly dissected the Peridotite Nappe and in the northern half of New Caledonia only left isolated klippes along the West Coast.

Terra Nova, 24, 77–85, 2012 Abstract Comparing palaeolatitudes estimated from remanent magnetization data of ferricrete developed over laterite at two sites (Goro and Tiebaghi) against the apparent polar wandering path of Australia provides new time constraints for the peridotite weathering in New Caledonia. The Tiebaghi Massif of the West Coast klippes displays a single episode of ferricrete development during latest Oligocene times. By contrast, the Goro site in the southern part of the ‘Massif du Sud' reveals a more complex history with several episodes of ferricrete development from latest Oligocene to Pliocene–Quaternary times. These data have made it possible to constrain the post-obduction geodynamics and associated morphogenesis of New Caledonia since related uplift probably prevented regolith development until latest Oligocene times. Moreover, the later uplift and deep erosion of the West Coast klippes during the Early Miocene probably prevented further regolith preservation.

International audience; Along the Sopoti section of Mali Gjere mountain are found two distinct mid-Cretaceous marly-shaly-siliceous intervals that occur near the top of the Vigla Limestone Formation (Aptian-Albian) of the Ionian zone in southern Albania. The lower interval is relatively rich in carbonate content (36% CaCO3 on average) and radiolaria (10% on average). It contains black shale levels rich in organic matter (up to 8.5% total organic carbon (TOC)) of marine origin, which did not experience any strong thermal maturation as suggested by their very low Tmax values. The age of the lower interval is latest Barremian to Early Aptian based on its calcareous nannofossil and radiolarian assemblages. It is therefore regarded as the equivalent of the Fourcade Level of Greece, reflecting the Oceanic Anoxic Event 1a (OAE1a). The upper interval is richer in both carbonate content (60% CaCO3 on average) and radiolaria (20% on average) but it is practically devoid of any preserved organic matter. Its age straddles the Aptian-Albian boundary based on integrated biochronologic data of dinoflagellates, calcareous nannofossils and radiolaria. It is tentatively considered as the sedimentary expression of OAE1b (sensu Leckie et al., 2002) in the Ionian zone of Albania. The presence of large Assipetra nannoliths in both shaly-siliceous intervals and the relative abundance of radiolaria suggest that their accumulation took place during periods of higher productivity in the Ionian zone of Albania. = Deux horizons argilomarneux bien distincts sont identifié s vers le sommet de la Formation crétacée des Calcaires de Vigla de la zone ionienne. Ils sont étudiés en détail le long de la coupe de Sopoti de l'Albanie méridionale. L'horizon inférieur est relativement riche en carbonates (36% de CaCO3 en moyenne) et radiolaires (10% en moyenne). Il contient de nombreux niveaux riches en matière organique d'origine marine (jusqu'à 8,5% de COT). Des valeurs très faibles de Tmax indiquent que la matière organique n'a pas subi une forte maturation thermique. Sur la base des nannofossiles calcaires et des radiolaires l'âge de cet horizon inférieur est corrélé avec le Barré mien terminal - Aptien inférieur et par conséquent considéré comme équivalent du niveau Fourcade (OAE1a) de Grèce. L'horizon supé rieur est plus riche en carbonates (60%de CaCO3 en moyenne) et radiolaires (20% en moyenne), mais il est pratiquement dé pourvu de matière organique. Son âge couvre la limite Aptien-Albien sur la base des dinoflagellés, des nannofossiles calcaires et des radiolaires et il est provisoirement corrélé avec l'OAE1b. L'abondance relative des radiolaires, la dominance de Radiolaires Nassellaires multicyrtides et la présence de larges nannolithes Assipetra au sein de ces deux horizons suggèrent que leur accumulation a eu lieu durant des intervalles d'eutrophisation et d'une production biosiliceuse accrue des radiolaires au sein de la zone ionienne.

National audience; L'intérêt porté aux formations superficielles ou " régolithe " suscite une demande croissante, non seulement en termes de connaissances géologiques (cartographie, nature, origine, processus de formation) mais aussi en termes d'enjeux pour les territoires (aménagement, risques, gestion des ressources) et donc d'intérêts économiques. Le BRGM a réalisé en 2009 un premier état des lieux de la connaissance du Régolithe en France métropole, à l'échelle du 1/1 000 000, aussi bien pour les terrains allochtones (dépôts continentaux liés aux processus de transport) que pour les terrains autochtones (profils d'altération météorique). Ce travail, actualisé en 2013, a mis en évidence une forte hétérogénéité de la qualité de l'information géologique disponible et cible le travail à réaliser, en particulier sur le terrain. La modélisation géométrique des unités géologiques constituant le Régolithe est un outil incontournable pour faire progresser la connaissance de la distribution spatiale des formations. L'application de cet outil, étroitement associée aux connaissances géologiques connues, constitue une première approche et un guide pour le développement d'une stratégie d'acquisition. La méthodologie mise en œuvre dans le cadre de la modélisation des formations du régolithe allochtone et autochtone, réalisée sous GDM-Multilayer, à l'échelle de chaque département, puis assemblée à l'échelle d'une région, s'appuie sur les cartes géologiques disponibles et les données des forages de la Banque de Données du Sous-Sol. Ce travail a été réalisé dans un premier temps à l'échelle de la région Bretagne. Les cartes des données interpolées (toit et épaisseur) mettent aussi en évidence des résultats sur-ou sous-évalués dans certaines zones géographiques, ce qui incite à s'interroger à la fois sur la pertinence des données d'entrée du modèle et sur la nécessité d'un contrôle local sur le terrain. http://www.brgm.fr/content/regolithe-geologie-tres-proche-sous-sol-amenagement

Le paléomagnétisme est dans certains cas particuliers l'unique méthode de datation possible pour dater les palésurfaces d'altération. C'est par exemple le cas en Nouvelle Calédonie où plusieurs surfaces étagées ont été reconnus sur l'ensemble de l'île (Trescases, 1975 ; Latham, 1986 ; Chevillotte et al., 2006). Ces surfaces ne peuvent être calées dans le temps par stratigraphie ni biostratigraphie, puisqu'elles ne sont jamais recouvertes directement par des sédiments avec de la faune ou de la flore. Elles ne peuvent être datées non plus par des méthodes de datation absolues sur oxydes de Mn, car les concentrations en K sont trop faibles dans ce type de profils d'altération sur péridotites. Seul le paléomagnétisme permet donc de dater ces surfaces. Plusieurs campagnes de terrain ont été entreprises dans ce but de 2008 à 2013. Des études pétrographiques ont été réalisées de manière systématique sur les différentes surfaces cuirassées repérées, par exemple à Goro, Tiébaghi, sur les massifs du Kopéto et du Boulinda et jusqu'aux surfaces étagées en contrebas, autour de Népoui. Les observations pétrographiques ont permis d'avancer des hypothèses quant à la compréhension des résultats obtenus par paléomagnétisme, en montrant parfois plusieurs phases de remobilisation de cuirasse et de silicification, alors qu'aucune différence flagrante n'était visible d'un point de vue géomorphologique, ni macrospique. Nous avons ainsi pu mettre en évidence des faciès de cuirasses "favorables" aux datations paléomagnétiques, comme par exemple à Goro ou Tiébaghi (Sevin et al., 2012) et des faciès "défavorables", comme par exemple sur les massifs du Kopéto, du Boulinda et les hautes surfaces autour de Népoui. Aujourd'hui les études pétrographiques sont essentielles pour cibler les sites d'échantillonnage pour paléomagnétisme et pour interpréter les résultats obtenus. International audience; A few sandstones occurring in Belgium, especially those from Paleogene strata, share many common features with pedogenic and groundwater silcretes documented in the Paris Basin in France, in South Africa and in Australia (e.g. Thiry, 1999; Summerfield, 1983; Webb & Golding, 1998,). Here we present a review of the criteria that may be used to assess the pedogenic (or "groundwater") origin for sandstones and silcretes. At field scale, pedogenic features in silcrete often consist in the development of vertical (columnar) or nodular structures and/or layers (horizons) due to vetical percolation (illuviation) and transformation of materials in the profile porosity and cracks. Groundwater silcrete often exhibit a typical mammilated surface (e.g. Nash & Ullyot, 2007). Root and rootlet casts, sometimes with silicified root or wood material, also indicate that the rock evolved at the surface or near-surface. At microscopic scale, illuviation of silt and clays in the vadose or water-table environment results in the formation of a series of finely-laminated coatings and infillings. These pedofeatures consist in "typic", "crescent", "capping", "pendent", "micropan" and "crust" coatings (Bullock et al., 1985). Irregular rounded structures or "glaebules" also develop as well as micro-columnar or prismatic textures. Many of them have been observed in pedogenic silcretes around the world (e.g. Thiry, 1999) but also in Paleogene silcrete in Belgium (e.g. Veldman et al., in review). Of particular importance is the concentration of fine-grained titanium-oxides in pedogenic silcrete. These Ti-oxides most probably originated from the weathering of clay material and were concentrated via the same pedogenic processes which concentrated silica in the silcrete profile (Thiry, 1997). In sandstones with a pure sand matrix, where no or few fine-grained material is available for illuviation, assessing the pedogenic origin for the silicification is much more difficult based solely on microtextural observations. New perspectives may arise from trace-element analysis in the quartz cement overgrowing the grains. For example, combining cathodoluminescence imaging (CL) and electron microprobe analysis (EPMA) allowed the detec on of abnormally-high concentration of Al and K in the quartz cement relative to the quartz grains in the Grandglise Thanetian sandstone in the Mons Basin (figure). This suggests that first the weathering of glauconite, which is actually observed here, is the likely source for silica and secondly, the evidence for aluminum migration would indicate strongly acidic conditions in the pore fluids.

National audience; In weathered volcanic tropical islands, geological studies are often limited due to the generally poorly outcropping conditions. Ground geophysical campaigns are also hard to perform due to difficult access in densely populated and forested areas. Recognition of geometric and petrographic characteristics of weathering mantles is a prerequisite to provide sustainable solutions to the management of natural hazards. In this particular context, airborne TDEM appears as a promising method to provide precise information about the Regolith. In 2010, the BRGM (the French geological survey) and the Prefecture of Mayotte decided to fund a geological mapping project including a heliborne TDEM resistivity survey of Mayotte. The SkyTEM helicopter borne transient; Dans les îles tropicales volcaniques, des études géologiques sont souvent limitées en raison des mauvaises conditions d'affleurement. Les campagnes de géophysique au sol sont difficiles à mettre en oeuvre compte tenu des difficultés d'accès dans des zones densément peuplées et boisées. La reconnaissance et la caractérisation géométriques et pétrographiques des manteaux d'altérites est un prérequis pour répondre aux demandes concernant, par exemple, la gestion des risques naturels. Dans ce contexte particulier, acquérir des données TDEM aéroportées apparaît comme la méthode la plus appropriée pour fournir des informations précises sur le régolithe. En 2010, le BRGM et la préfecture de Mayotte ont décidé de financer un projet de cartographie géologique, incluant un levé de résistivité TDEM héliporté sur l'ensemble de Mayotte. La méthode électromagnétique a été choisie afin d'obtenir une image de la résistivité quasi-3D de l'île. De bons contrastes de conductivité (de 1 à 600 ohm.m) entre les différents types de roches ont permis de définir la géométrie des principales unités géologiques, jusqu'à une profondeur de 200 m. Les premiers résultats sont très prometteurs et ont montré qu'il s'agit d'un outil puissant pour la cartographie de régolithe et en particulier la cartographie des profils d'altération.

Nickel ore deposits of New Caledonia are formed in thick laterites and ferricretes developed on peridotites. Formation of this regolith remains unclear but combines stable phases with weathering profile development and preservation and mobile phases with regolith dismantling and fluvial sediment deposition. Between the the Upper Eocene obduction of the Peridotite Nappe and today with still active weathering profiles, timing of of the weathering and erosion processes is not constrained. Recent studies have proposed a geomorphologic classification of planation surfaces and inferred scenarios of vertical deformation and morphogenetic evolution by applying the planation surface concept, previously used for stable cratons (western Africa, Australia or Brazil-Guyana). However, considering the absence of absolute dating and continuous stratigraphic relationship in the new-caledonian regolith, and the geodynamic context of the Norfolk ridge close to a subduction zone, much less stable than the old cratons, the use of this concept appears unrealistic. Therefore Apatite Fission Track and U-Th/He thermochronology has been applied on all available granitoids intruded into the Peridotite Nappe. Among 14 samples collected, only 5 yielded apatite crystals and 3 gave interpretable results. Given the analytical error, the thermochronological ages obtained for the Koum and Saint Louis post obduction granitoids are similar to their absolute radiometric ages, i.e. 30 to 25 Ma. This suggests a very rapid exhumation after their formation and thus an important uplift. Detailed study and datings of the new-caledonian regolith should further help to reconstruct its recent evolution and the morphogenesis of 'Grande Terre'.

Although the description of the emplacement and the weathering of the New Caledonia peridotites are well documented, the reconstruction of the planation surfaces formed upon the ultrabasic massifs are poorly documented. Ambiguities remain on the timing and modality of weathering and related supergene nickel ore. The weathering being still active on the peridotites in the current differentiated landscape and tropical climate, the beginning of the ferruginisation is estimated to have occurred between 34 Ma (end of the obduction) or 25 Ma (last granitic intrusions) and present. The data and interpretations presented here are based on paleomagnetic analysis of lateritic ferricretes of Goro and Tiébaghi and radiometric datings obtain by K/Ar on Mn oxides from the Saint-Louis granite weathering profile. In Tiébaghi an age of 25 Ma has been obtained along a section crossing the plateau. Well constrained ages of 0-5 Ma to 25 Ma have been obtained in Goro, highlighting possible stepped paleosurfaces. A consistent age of 18.25 +/-0.6 Ma has been obtained at Saint-Louis. The Tiébaghi Massif displays a single episode of ferricrete development during latest Oligocene times, whereas the Goro site reveals several episodes of ferricrete development from latest Oligocene to Pliocene-Quaternary times, the weathering of the Saint-Louis granite being recorded in between. These data allow to constrain the post-obduction morphogenesis of New Caledonia since uplift probably prevented regolith development until latest Oligocene times. Moreover, the later uplift and deep erosion of the West Coast klippes during the Early Miocene probably prevented further regolith preservation.

International audience; In New Caledonia post obduction uplift caused the erosion of the early regolith, but their timing is poorly constrained. The Nepoui Formation, on the west coast, is a witness of post-obduction deposits. This area presents stepped ferruginized surfaces from the Kopeto-Boulinda Massif to the Nepoui Peninsula, indicating a large single paleosurface slightly tilted and incised by the river system or successive planation surfaces. Palaeomagnetic analysis and petrographic study of the ferricretes capping those stepped surfaces have been performed. Samples from the Kopeto-Boulinda Massif and lower Nepoui surfaces could not be dated by paleomagnetism, except the silico-ferruginous matrix of the Nepoui conglomerate close to 10-25 Ma. This age is rather imprecise but 1) the weathering of the fluvial conglomerates fossilized by the silicification followed their deposition and 2) conglomerates are locally interstratified in Lower Miocene marine limestones. In addition the detailed petrographic study of the ferricretes confirms rearrangements of nodules and pisolites, more important in the upper parts of the toposequence, where they follow smooth upper slopes of the topography. Therefore the term of lateritic ferricretes cannot be used, as they result from the dismantling of lateritic materials capping a former landscape. The late siliceous phase has been observed locally upstream, but it is more abundant downstream. All the data can be interpreted in reconstructing a fossil paleolandscape in that part of New Caledonia triggered by a Lower Miocene uplift, responsible for the drastic erosion of oldest profiles, creation of highly incised river systems and deposition of fluvial conglomerate.

La mise à disposition des données géologiques de surface et l'établissement d'une infrastructure géologique de référence sur le Régolithe répond aux nouvelles volontés européennes et à la politique volontariste de la France affichée lors du Grenelle de l'Environnement. Les formations qui constituent le régolithe* apparaissent non seulement comme des formations géologiques à part entière mais aussi comme le lieu de nombreuses activités humaines, sources de matériaux exploitables et roches-mères de nombreux sols. Leur position d'interface entre le sol et le substrat géologique les place sur le cheminement des eaux d'infiltration : elles peuvent intervenir alors tantôt comme filtre des pollutions superficielles, tantôt comme écran imperméable et participent à la protection des aquifères sous-jacents. Dans certains cas, elles constituent elles-mêmes des aquifères exploitables (altérites, alluvions...). Elles doivent être appréhendées comme un capital à gérer et à utiliser avec maîtrise. A ce jour, notre connaissance des formations du régolithe est essentiellement cartographique. La réalisation d'un inventaire et d'un archivage des données géométriques publiques sur les formations du Régolithe a été entreprise (Ricordel-Prognon et al., 2009). En parallèle, une carte de synthèse à l'échelle du million des formations du régolithe a été produite (Lacquement et al., 2009). Les données issues de ces travaux ont été capitalisées et structurées. Ainsi, un ensemble de couches dédiées aux formations géologiques de surface est aujourd'hui disponible via le portail InfoTerre. A ce jour, notre connaissance des formations du régolithe est essentiellement cartographique. La réalisation d'un inventaire et d'un archivage des données publiques (issues des rapports BRGM) sur les formations du régolithe a été entreprise ces dernières années (Ricordel-Prognon et al., 2009, 2010) et poursuivie dans le cadre des travaux présentés dans ce rapport. En parallèle, une carte de synthèse à l'échelle du million des formations du régolithe a été produite (Lacquement et al., 2009). Les données issues de ces travaux ont été capitalisées et structurées. Ainsi, un ensemble de couche numériques dédiées aux formations géologiques de surface est aujourd'hui disponible via le portail InfoTerreTM. Il est aujourd'hui possible de consulter : 1 - la carte de l'état des lieux de la connaissance concernant les formations du régolithe à l'échelle du millionième, 2 - 70% des données publiques traitant des formations du régolithe à l'échelle de la France métropolitaine, L'utilisateur a accès à l'emprise de la zone d'étude, au nombre de rapports disponibles, à leur titre, leur domaine d'intérêt principal puis à une fiche de métadonnées détaillée lui permettant de cibler rapidement la nature de la donnée disponible dans chaque rapport. Cette fiche comprend également un lien permettant à l'utilisateur de télécharger directement le rapport PDF concerné. La finalisation de l'inventaire des données publiques est programmée en 2012 en même temps qu'une mise à niveau de données existantes et de l'intégration ou la réalisation de modèles 3D en cohérence avec le cadre et les objectifs du programme du Référentiel Géologique de France.

Regolith formations are surficial fragmental and unconsolidated rocks whose genesis and properties result from successive periods of surface processes. They comprise:– autochthonous formations resulting directly from successive periods of surface weathering in the upper 200 metres of the Earth’s crust;– allochthonous formations in which the unconsolidated deposits result from weathering and transport and have not yet been affected by burial diagenesis.Regolith studies are currently at the crossroads of new scientific challenges and new environmental needs. Not only do regolith formations support a full spectrum of biological activity, including human activities, they also provide a source of extractable materials and form the substratum of soils. As such, they should be considered as a capital to be managed and protected. Historically, geological maps have focused mainly on substratum geology. Although the inclusion of regolith formations in the 1:50,000-scale geological map series of France since the 1980s has considerably increased our knowledge of France’s regolith, this is still is patchy and generally insufficient for applied uses despite increasing societal pressures demanding up-to-date regolith maps. To produce an updated map at the scale of France is an ambitious project that must necessarily begin with an inventory of existing geological cartographic data relating to regolith formations. A digital two-layered regolith map of France, representing both the allochthonous and autochthonous formations, was produced in 2009 at a scale of 1:1,000,000. Each layer is accompanied by a confidence index map, and a brief descriptive note of the mapped formations (in French) is also available. A critical analysis of the two map layers reveals not only the very uneven nature of our current knowledge in terms of data quantity and quality, but also its deficiency as regards the expectations of the public authorities. Today, therefore, we require surface studies combining geology, geophysics and geochemistry in order to enhance our understanding of the natural processes governing the distribution and evolution of subsoil formations. This approach is critical for developing appropriate guidance in the use and management of natural and groundwater resources. The 2009 map can be viewed and interrogated at http://infoterre.brgm.fr, and a “pdf” of the map and corresponding project report can be downloaded from http://www.brgm.fr/brgm/GEO/rego.htm. Elles sont la source de matériaux exploitables et forment le substrat des sols. Elles représentent donc un capital à gérer et à préserver. Historiquement, les cartes géologiques se sont focalisés sur la géologie du substratum. La connaissance que nous avons des formations du régolithe s’est considérablement accrue depuis les années 1980 grâce au levé des cartes géologiques de la France à l’échelle du 1/50 000e. Cependant, en regard de la pression sociétale, elle demeure inégale et incomplète. Une remise à jour des cartes du régolithe est aujourd’hui nécessaire. La production d’une carte des formations du régolithe à l’échelle de la France est un projet ambitieux qui débute par un inventaire des données géologiques cartographiques disponibles. Une carte numérique à deux couches des formations du régolithe de la France à l’échelle du millionième a donc été produite en 2009. Chaque couche est accompagnée d’une carte de qualité de la donnée. Une brève description des formations cartographiées est également disponible. Une analyse critique des deux cartes souligne l’hétérogénéité de notre connaissance aussi bien en terme de quantité et que de qualité de la donnée. L’analyse met également en évidence l’insuffisance de notre connaissance en regard des attentes de nos tutelles. Il est aujourd’hui important de développer des études sur la thématique des formations de surface en combinant géologie, géophysique et géochimie et ce afin d’améliorer notre compréhension des processus naturels gouvernant la distribution et l’évolution des formations qui sont le substrat de nos activités. Cette approche est aujourd’hui critique pour guider nos tutelles dans l’utilisation et la gestion de nos ressources. International audience; Although the description of the emplacement (Cluzel et al., 2001) and the weathering (Trescases, 1975; Latham, 1986; Chevillotte et al., 2006) of the New Caledonia peridotites is well documented in the literature, the knowledge and the age of formation of the landsurfaces formed upon the ultrabasic massifs are poorly documented. Several surfaces have been recognised along the island but no reliable ages could be attributed to the associated regolith. In fact, the overthrust of the Ophiolitic Nappe in the South is stratigraphically constrained by a younger autochthonous olistostrom dated by Late Priabonian pelagic foraminifera (Cluzel et al., 1998). The supergene weathering being still active, the beginning of the ferruginisation of the various plateaux is not well constrained and estimated to have occurred between 34 Ma and Actual. The processes of absolute dating are not relevant to these weathering profiles (K-Mn oxides are poorly concentrated). Ferricretes and various ferruginous materials have the potential to record the ancient geomagnetic field providing means of age determination. In tropical soils, most of the primary remanence carring minerals are dissolved during weathering and secondary magnetic minerals, such as goethite and haematite, are formed in situ acquiring a crystallisation (or chemical) remanent magnetization (CRM). The paleomagnetic pole recovered by demagnetizing the CRMs are plotted on the local apparent polar wandering (APWP) reference curve providing an age for the different parts of the paleoweathering profiles. The data and interpretations we present here are based on paleomagnetic analysis of ferricretes of Goro and Tiebaghi. The preliminary results suggest, for the first time ever, well constrained ages between 20 and 25 Ma of major ferruginisation stages of the peridotites of New Caledonia.

International audience; Geological records of the history of ancient land surfaces are scarce and often fragmented by unconformities. Determining the age of these surfaces has long been the limiting factor in correlating continental paleosurfaces with marine basin deposits. Age determination of the weathering product of continental paleosurfaces as well as weathered material within the crystalline basement, is of prime importance for geodynamic reconstruction in general and more so for assessing differential dynamics between basin and basement areas, erosion rates, etc. In this paper, we examine layers of ferruginous kaolinitic paleoweathering products overlying the basement rocks of the French Massif Central. These layers, which are mainly formed in situ and are azoic (devoid of fossils), have been classically related to the "siderolithic" (Eocene-Oligocene) period because of their geographic ties with Tertiary deposits. The paleomagnetic ages of these paleoweathered surfaces have been obtained by comparing their acquired remanent magnetization, converted into paleomagnetic poles, with the APWP (apparent polar wander path) of the Eurasian plate. Recovered ages indicate late Jurassic to early Cretaceous ages (140-160 Ma with a confidence limit of 10 Ma) which are much older than the previously assumed Tertiary age. The ages obtained in this study considerably alter the present knowledge of the geodynamic evolution of the French Massif Central. Our results suggest a lack of sedimentary cover at the Jurassic-Cretaceous boundary. This implies that at the time of deposition of the siderolithic formations, the basement was cropping out and devoid of any Mesozoic cover. Furthermore, the profiles are not compacted, indicating that they have never been buried beneath a significant sedimentary cover. The obtained ages point to a great stability of French Massif Central throughout the Mesozoic, with very low ablation-erosion, while neighbouring basins (Aquitaine and Paris) were subsiding about 2000 m.

International audience; The Morvan massif, located in the northern part of the French Massif Central, shows widespread unusual deep alteration profiles in the Palaeozoic basement rocks (gneisses, granites and rhyolites). They are characterised by overall albitization, chloritisation and haematisation. Albite and chlorite constitute their characteristic mineral paragenesis. Haematite pigmentation comes with this paragenesis and gives an overall pink coloration to the weathered rocks. A paleomagnetic analysis was conducted after detailed petrographical and mineralogical studies of the alteration that lead to the albitized profiles. Special attention was devoted to the occurrence of haematite, the main paleomagnetism carrier, with the though to date this palaeoweathering event. Petrographical checking after heating treatments showed that deshydroxylation of chlorite also led to the formation of secondary haematite. This haematite formed by recrystallization acquired remanence properties and thus superimposed and hided the original magnetic signal. This problem has prevented the extraction of the original magnetic signal especially in the sections made up of rhyolites. Virtual Geomagnetic Poles (VGPs) obtained from the characteristic directions carried by haematite have been compared to the European Apparent Polar Wander Path (APWP). An Early Triassic magnetic overprint has been recorded in the albitized basement rocks of the Morvan massif. The age obtained for this albitization phenomena, strengthens the hypothesis that albitization developed in relation with palaeoweathering processes linked with the Triassic palaeosurface. Therefore, large scale continental weathering could be the main mechanism for Late Permian/Early Triassic remagnetizations which are widespread throughout the Palaeozoic formations of western Europe. As far as we know, this is the first time that deep palaeoweathering phenomena affecting hard and non-disaggregated weathered rocks of the basement have been directly dated. Palaeomagnetism appears as a precious tool to date alteration events developed in widely and long-lasting emerged areas of the basement. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Resume Introduction L’hydroxyuree est un antimetabolite utilise dans le traitement des maladies myeloproliferatives. Ses effets secondaires habituels sont principalement hematologiques, gastro-intestinaux, cutanes et une fievre. Plus rarement, des pneumopathies ont ete decrites. Observation Nous en rapportons un cas chez une patiente traitee pour polyglobulie primitive. Elle fut hospitalisee 20 jours apres l’instauration d’un traitement par hydroxyuree en raison d’une fievre elevee, d’une toux et expectorations muqueuses associees a des nausees. Le scanner thoracique retrouvait des opacites diffuses en verre depoli. Les recherches microbiologiques ont ete negatives. Le tableau a regresse en quelques jours apres l’arret du traitement. La reintroduction du medicament a entraine une recidive des symptomes. Conclusion Ce cas vient completer 15 cas de la litterature a propos de pneumopathies induites par l’hydroxyuree. Deux formes en ont ete decrites : aigue, febrile, dans le mois apres introduction de l’hydroxyuree ; et une forme chronique et apyretique. Il faut savoir evoquer cette complication rare de l’hydroxyuree.

International audience; Les investigations sur l'emplacement du laboratoire souterrain de Meuse/Haute-Marne pour évaluer sa stabilité géologique ont en grande partie contribué à réviser l'évolution géomorphologique du bassin de Paris par l'étude des paléosurfaces d'altération et des processus commandant l'érosion pendant le Quaternaire. Les travaux sur le terrain (cartographie, échantillonnage) associés aux méthodes de datations (paleomagnétisme sur des altérites, l'ESR sur les terrasses alluviales et l'U/Th TIMS sur des spéléothèmes) et combinés avec la modélisation numérique, ont été essentiels dans toutes les études. Ils ont permis de clore certains débats par la caractérisation de plusieurs paléosurfaces qui étaient jusque-là attribuées au Tertiaire, par l'identification d'ensembles de formes d'érosion fluviale dans des secteurs où elles n'avaient jamais été identifiées, par la compréhension du rôle des karsts dans l'érosion de surface. Les résultats principaux peuvent être récapitulés comme suit : 1) " la surface supérieure " se compose en fait de plusieurs surfaces d'altération, bien identifiées, qui ont été formées à diverses périodes : Crétacé inférieur et début du Tertiaire ; 2) l'évolution du paysage quaternaire est conduite par les incisions des cours d'eau et le recul des cuestas, tandis que les karsts jouent un rôle significatif mais pas déterminant ; 3) la modélisation montre qu'un soulèvement tectonique doit être pris en considération pour simuler l'incision. Ces résultats sont essentiels pour l'analyse de Géoprospective: les paléosurfaces apportent une information importante sur l'évolution géodynamique régionale à long terme, l'altération continentale et son impact sur les caractéristiques géologiques de la formation, alors que l'incision par les cours d'eau donne les éléments quantitatifs sur l'évolution récente du paysage qui permettent d'estimer des évolutions plausibles du site pendant le million d'années à venir.
