Abstract

This paper is the conclusion of the “Spaghetti Project” aiming to revise French species of Terebellidae sensu lato (s.l.) belonging to the five families: Polycirridae, Telothelepodidae, Terebellidae sensu stricto (s.s.), Thelepodidae and Trichobranchidae. During this project, 41 species were observed, 31 of them new for science: eight species of Polycirridae, eleven species of Terebellidae s.s., three species of Thelepodidae and nine species of Trichobranchidae. We provide a comprehensive key for all European species of terebellids with a focus on the important diagnostic characters for each family. Finally, we discuss issues on taxonomy, biodiversity and cryptic and pseudo-cryptic species of polychaetes in European waters, based on results obtained during this project.

Abstract

International audience; Long-term monitoring programs are fundamental to detect changes in ecosystem health and understand ecological processes. In the current context of increasing anthropogenic threats on marine ecosystems, understanding the dynamics and response of communities becomes essential. We used data collected over 14 years in the REBENT benthic coastal invertebrates monitoring program, at a regional scale in the North-East Atlantic, covering a total of 26 sites and 979 taxa. Four distinct habitats were studied: two biogenic habitats associated with foundation species in the intertidal and subtidal zones and two bare sedimentary habitats in the same respective tidal zones. We used community trajectory analysis (CTA), a statistical approach that allows for quantitative measures and comparisons of temporal trajectories of ecosystems. We compared observed community trajectories to trajectories simulated under a non-directional null model in order to better understand the dynamics of the communities, their potential drivers, and the role of the studied habitats in these dynamics. Despite strong differences in the community compositions between sites and habitats, the communities followed non-directional dynamics during the 14 years monitored, which suggested stability at the regional scale. However, the shape, size, and direction of the trajectories of benthic communities were more similar within than among habitats, also suggesting the influence of the nature of the habitat on community dynamics. Results showed a higher variability in community composition the first years of the monitoring in the intertidal bare habitat and confirmed the role of biogenic habitats in maintaining temporal stability. They also highlighted the need to apprehend the role of transient and rare species and the scale of observation in temporal beta diversity analyses. Finally, our study confirmed the usefulness of CTA to link observed trajectory patterns to fundamental ecological processes.

Abstract

WOS:000700272400001; International audience; Taxonomic and functional trajectories of benthic assemblages were studied in shallow soft-bottom sediments in the bay of Saint-Brieuc (Western English Channel). Changes were assessed at different spatial and temporal scales using a macrobenthic dataset based on 38 stations sampled in 1987 and 2019, coupled with data from one station sampled annually between 2005 and 2019 as part of the European Water Framework Directive monitoring programme. Taxonomic trajectories indicated 1) changes in the structure and distribution of benthic assemblages, 2) an homogenization of the assemblages, and 3) significant functional shifts. Fishing activities and nutrient enrichment are probably strong drivers of the observed changes, as suggested by the higher mortality rate of fragile, flexible, tubiculous and burrowing species, and the increase in the abundance of opportunistic species in the assemblages. Certain populations of macroinvertebrates seem jointly controlled by climate change and by the aforementioned local factors of disturbance. The Community Trajectory Analysis framework appears as a new and interesting method to track ecological changes in marine ecosystems by measuring change with respect to a baseline state, to help define ecological recovery (station returning to the initial ecological state) and departure (station presenting increased changes over time), and to analyse trajectory similarity. According to the degradation of habitat over time, we identify the need for the implementation of knowledge-based conservation strategies, especially within Natura 2000 sites.

Abstract

Species ranges are shifting globally to track temperature changes in response to climate warming, with substantial variability among taxa. In the English Channel, a biogeographical transition zone between the cold temperate and warm temperate provinces of the North-East Atlantic, distribution shifts have been relatively well documented for plankton, fish and intertidal benthic organisms, but little information is available on sublittoral benthos. Following a description of the magnitude of the sea bottom temperature (SBT) rise, the changes in the distribution and occupancy of 65 benthic invertebrate species were analysed by comparing data collected throughout the English Channel at more than 200 stations sampled during a cool period in the 1960s–1970s and at present in 2012–2014. A non-uniform rise in SBT for the last three decades was observed at the regional scale, varying from 0.07 to 0.54°C per decade. This rise differs from that reported for sea surface temperature (SST) in stratified areas suggesting that SBT should be used rather than SST to analyse responses of subtidal organisms to climate change. Abstract

International audience; Long-term series are an essential resource to assess temporal changes in biodiversity and disentangle the relative role of external and internal factors on community dynamics. In the Bay of Morlaix, benthic samples were collected at one station in a sandy community over a forty-year period (1977-2016) using the same design. During this period, the community was exposed to a major oil spill but also to gradual changes in sediment grain size and temperature. Q-mode and r-mode analyses were performed to describe the trajectory of the community and identify taxa contributing to variation in faunal composition among years. A type 3 Similarities Profiles analysis was carried out to assess which species groups covary coherently. Over time, different periods were reported included the effect of the oil spill, the following recovery period, and a large shift in the community structure in the absence of specific events. The species groups identified by the SIMPER analysis showed very different temporal variations according to the expected species sensitivity to different stressors and to biotic interactions. Our results highlight that benthic community may exhibit highly complex dynamics which cannot be easily assigned to one cause of change, raising the question of a reference status for managers.

11. Drivers of polychaetes functional α- and β-diversity at regional scale: Disentangling the role of biogenic habitats and environmental variability

Abstract

Alterations of the seafloor, particularly loss of biogenic habitats, are homogenizing benthic environments and their associated biota. Apprehending the functional consequences of these changes is critical but requires a thorough understanding of the functional β-diversity of benthic communities. Here, using data from 3 years (2007, 2010, 2013) of the REBENT monitoring programme and 51 sampling locations along Brittany’s coastline (France), we assess taxonomic and functional α- and β-diversity of polychaetes assemblages and disentangle their drivers at the regional scale and over four habitats: subtidal and intertidal bare sediments, subtidal maerl (coralline red algae) beds and intertidal Zostera marina meadows. The 1061 sediment samples yielded 137,319 polychaetes belonging to 242 species. Eleven traits and 43 modalities were used to describe the functional effect and response of these species. Among the highly contrasted environments of Brittany, strong within-habitat taxonomic variability was observed, which blurred among-habitat differences. Here, we relate taxonomic patterns and functional variations, in order to propose a model linking environmental and habitat conditions to taxonomic and functional α- and β-diversity. Linking these various facets of diversity facilitates the identification of sites with particular conservation interests.
