Abstract

DURING investigations of piezoelectricity in polymers1–4, we observed that oriented polyvinylfluoride (PVF) has a large pyroelectric effect, which seems promising for eventual application as an infrared detector. This communication describes the orientation technique, sample fabrication and some of the characteristics when irradiated with infrared radiation. While this communication was being prepared, pyroelectric activity in polyvinylidene fluoride was reported5, but this emphasized its non-linear optical properties rather than its use as a detector.
