Los objetivos de este trabajo fueron realizar una revisión sistemática y una evaluación crítica de los estudios de VB para albúmina glicosilada y proporcionar datos actualizados de VB para glucosa y HbA1c, incluyendo prestigiosos estudios recientemente publicados como el Estudio de Variación Biológica Europea (EuBIVAS).

To date, the effect of blinatumomab and donor lymphocyte infusion association as a salvage treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) relapse after allogeneic transplant procedure is still unknown. Here, we report a case report of a patient with early relapse of ALL after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant successfully treated with a combination of blinatumomab and DLI.

Abstract COVID-19 vaccines were originally designed based on the ancestral Spike protein, but immune escape of emergent Variants of Concern (VOC) jeopardized their efficacy, warranting variant-proof vaccines. Here, we used preclinical rodent models to establish the cross-protective and cross-neutralizing capacity of adenoviral-vectored vaccines expressing VOC-matched Spike. CoroVaxG.3-D.FR, matched to Delta Plus Spike, displayed the highest levels of nAb to the matched VOC and mismatched variants. Cross-protection against viral infection in aged K18-hACE2 mice showed dramatic differences among the different vaccines. While Delta-targeted vaccines fully protected mice from a challenge with Gamma, a Gamma-based vaccine offered only partial protection to Delta challenge. Administration of CorovaxG.3-D.FR in a prime/boost regimen showed that a booster was able to increase the neutralizing capacity of the sera against all variants and fully protect aged K18-hACE2 mice against Omicron BA.1, as a BA.1-targeted vaccine did. The neutralizing capacity of the sera diminished in all cases against Omicron BA.2 and BA.5. Altogether, the data demonstrate that a booster with a vaccine based on an antigenically distant variant, such as Delta or BA.1, has the potential to protect from a wider range of SARS-CoV-2 lineages, although careful surveillance of breakthrough infections will help to evaluate combination vaccines targeting antigenically divergent variants yet to emerge.

As of 2035, the European Union has ratified the obligation to register only zero-emission cars, including ultra-low-emission vehicles (ULEVs). In this context, electric mobility fits in, which, however, presents the critical issue of the over-exploitation of critical raw materials (CRMs). An interesting solution to reduce this burden could be the so-called second life, in which batteries that are no longer able to guarantee high performance in vehicles are used for other applications that do not require high performance, such as so-called stationary systems, effectively avoiding new over-exploitation of resources. In this study, therefore, the environmental impacts of second-life lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries are verified using a life cycle perspective, taking a second life project as a case study. The results show how, through the second life, GWP could be reduced by −5.06 × 101 kg CO2 eq/kWh, TEC by −3.79 × 100 kg 1.4 DCB eq/kWh, HNCT by −3.46 × 100 kg 1.4 DCB eq/kWh, −3.88 × 100 m2a crop eq/kWh, and −1.12 × 101 kg oil eq/kWh. It is further shown how second life is potentially preferable to other forms of recycling, such as hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical recycling, as it shows lower environmental impacts in all impact categories, with environmental benefits of, for example, −1.19 × 101 kg CO2 eq/kWh (compared to hydrometallurgical recycling) and −1.50 × 101 kg CO2 eq/kWh (pyrometallurgical recycling), −3.33 × 102 kg 1.4 DCB eq/kWh (hydrometallurgical), and −3.26 × 102 kg 1.4 DCB eq/kWh (pyrometallurgical), or −3.71 × 100 kg oil eq/kWh (hydrometallurgical) and −4.56 × 100 kg oil eq/kWh (pyrometallurgical). By extending the service life of spent batteries, it may therefore be possible to extract additional value while minimizing emissions and the over-exploitation of resources.

We present $\texttt{Qibolab}$, an open-source software library for quantum hardware control integrated with the $\texttt{Qibo}$ quantum computing middleware framework. $\texttt{Qibolab}$ provides the software layer required to automatically execute circuit-based algorithms on custom self-hosted quantum hardware platforms. We introduce a set of objects designed to provide programmatic access to quantum control through pulses-oriented drivers for instruments, transpilers and optimization algorithms. $\texttt{Qibolab}$ enables experimentalists and developers to delegate all complex aspects of hardware implementation to the library so they can standardize the deployment of quantum computing algorithms in a extensible hardware-agnostic way, using superconducting qubits as the first officially supported quantum technology. We first describe the status of all components of the library, then we show examples of control setup for superconducting qubits platforms. Finally, we present successful application results related to circuit-based algorithms.

Latin America is one of the regions in which the COVID-19 pandemic has a stronger impact, with more than 72 million reported infections and 1.6 million deaths until June 2022. Since this region is ecologically diverse and is affected by enormous social inequalities, efforts to identify genomic patterns of the circulating SARS-CoV-2 genotypes are necessary for the suitable management of the pandemic. To contribute to the genomic surveillance of the SARS-CoV-2 in Latin America, we extended the number of SARS-CoV-2 genomes available from the region by sequencing and analyzing the viral genome from COVID-19 patients from seven countries (Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Colombia, Mexico, Bolivia, and Peru). Subsequently, we analyzed the genomes circulating mainly during 2021 including records from GISAID database from Latin America. A total of 1,534 genome sequences were generated from seven countries, demonstrating the laboratory and bioinformatics capabilities for genomic surveillance of pathogens that have been developed locally. For Latin America, patterns regarding several variants associated with multiple re-introductions, a relatively low percentage of sequenced samples, as well as an increment in the mutation frequency since the beginning of the pandemic, are in line with worldwide data. Besides, some variants of concern (VOC) and variants of interest (VOI) such as Gamma, Mu and Lambda, and at least 83 other lineages have predominated locally with a country-specific enrichments. This work has contributed to the understanding of the dynamics of the pandemic in Latin America as part of the local and international efforts to achieve timely genomic surveillance of SARS-CoV-2.

The ultimate goal of value-based laboratory medicine is maximizing the effectiveness of laboratory tests in improving patient outcomes, optimizing resources and minimizing unnecessary costs. This approach abandons the oversimplified notion of test volume and cost, in favor of emphasizing the clinical utility and quality of diagnostic tests in the clinical decision-making. Several key elements characterize value-based laboratory medicine, which can be summarized in some basic concepts, such as organization of in vitro diagnostics (including appropriateness, integrated diagnostics, networking, remote patient monitoring, disruptive innovations), translation of laboratory data into clinical information and measurable outcomes, sustainability, reimbursement, ethics (e.g., patient empowerment and safety, data protection, analysis of big data, scientific publishing). Education and training are also crucial, along with considerations for the future of the profession, which will be largely influenced by advances in automation, information technology, artificial intelligence, and regulations concerning in vitro diagnostics. This collective opinion paper, composed of summaries from presentations given at the two-day European Federation of Laboratory Medicine (EFLM) Strategic Conference "A vision to the future: value-based laboratory medicine" (Padova, Italy; September 23–24, 2024), aims to provide a comprehensive overview of value-based laboratory medicine, projecting the profession into a more clinically effective and sustainable future. As the healthcare sector evolves, Artificial Intelligence’s (AI’s) potential to enhance laboratory medicine is increasingly recognized. However, the adoption rates and attitudes towards AI across European laboratories have not been comprehensively analyzed. This study aims to fill this gap by surveying European laboratory professionals to assess their current use of AI, the digital infrastructure available, and their attitudes towards future implementations.We conducted a methodical survey during October 2023, distributed via EFLM mailing lists. The survey explored six key areas: general characteristics, digital equipment, access to health data, data management, AI advancements, and personal perspectives. We analyzed responses to quantify AI integration and identify barriers to its adoption.From 426 initial responses, 195 were considered after excluding incomplete and non-European entries. The findings revealed limited AI engagement, with significant gaps in necessary digital infrastructure and training. Only 25.6 % of laboratories reported ongoing AI projects. Major barriers included inadequate digital tools, restricted access to comprehensive data, and a lack of AI-related skills among personnel. Notably, a substantial interest in AI training was expressed, indicating a demand for educational initiatives.Despite the recognized potential of AI to revolutionize laboratory medicine by enhancing diagnostic accuracy and efficiency, European laboratories face substantial challenges. This survey highlights a critical need for strategic investments in educational programs and infrastructure improvements to support AI integration in laboratory medicine across Europe. Future efforts should focus on enhancing data accessibility, upgrading technological tools, and expanding AI training and literacy among professionals. Belantamab-mafodotin is an innovative and selective treatment for multi-refractory/relapsed multiple myeloma (MM) patients; however, available real-life experiences on efficacy and safety are limited. In this real-world multicentric retrospective study, we enrolled 28 MM patients treated in four Hematology units of Campania region, Italy, who received a median of six treatment lines prior to belantamab-mafodotin. The overall response rate (ORR) was 40% (complete remission, CR, 11%; very good partial remission, VGPR, 11%; and partial remission, PR, 18%), with a median progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) of 3 and 8 months, respectively. One of the most frequent drug-related adverse events was keratopathy observed in nine (32%) patients, leading to therapy discontinuation in only three (11%) of them. Moreover, 22 out of 28 total patients who were treated with at least two administrations achieved an ORR of 50% (CR, 14%; VGPR, 14%; and PR, 22%) with a median PFS and OS of 5 and 11 months, respectively. In conclusion, our multicentric study confirmed efficacy and safety of belantamab-mafodotin in triple-refractory MM patients even in the real-life setting.

An insulin resistant state is characteristic of patients with type 2 diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome, and metabolic syndrome. Identification of insulin resistance (IR) is most readily achievable using formulae combining plasma insulin and glucose results. In this study, we have used data from the European Biological Variation Study (EuBIVAS) to examine the biological variability (BV) of IR using the Homeostasis Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR) and the Quantitative Insulin sensitivity Check Index (QUICKI).Ninety EuBIVAS non-diabetic subjects (52F, 38M) from five countries had fasting HOMA-IR and QUICKI calculated from plasma glucose and insulin samples collected concurrently on 10 weekly occasions. The within-subject (CVI) and between-subject (CVG) BV estimates with 95 % CIs were obtained by CV-ANOVA after analysis of trends, variance homogeneity and outlier removal.The CVI of HOMA-IR was 26.7 % (95 % CI 25.5–28.3), driven largely by variability in plasma insulin and the CVI for QUICKI was 4.1 % (95 % CI 3.9–4.3), reflecting this formula’s logarithmic transformation of glucose and insulin values. No differences in values or BV components were observed between subgroups of men or women below and above 50 years.The EuBIVAS, by utilising a rigorous experimental protocol, has produced robust BV estimates for two of the most commonly used markers of insulin resistance in non-diabetic subjects.
