1. Laser-cleaning effects induced on different types of bronze archaeological corrosion products: chemical-physical surface characterisation

Abstract

Archaeological bronzes (Cu-Sn alloys) might be different in composition and these variabilities lead to a different interaction with the environment and, if they were buried, with several chemical elements present in soils. Generally, the result is the presence of complex corrosion products layers on the Cu-based artefacts which might be protective or reactive (and so dangerous) for the artefacts preservation itself. Moreover, the corrosion products can also be unwanted because hide the drawings present/imprinted on the original metal surfaces. So, for several reasons, it can be necessary to remove the unwanted corrosion products: laser-cleaning procedure is one of the most selective cleaning technique used. The main goal of this work was to assess possible laser-cleaning induced surface effects on different archaeological bronzes corrosion products structures through a systematic and multi-technique compositional study. Chemical-physical characterisations were performed on laser-cleaned and non-cleaned types of Cu-Sn archaeological corrosion products structures. The results show the efficiency and the low-invasiveness of the treatment.

Abstract

Qui di seguito viene illustrato il progetto scientifico ATENA, svolto presso l'Istituto per lo Studio dei Materiali Nanostrutturati (ISMN) del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) e co-finanziato dal MIUR con Decreto Direttoriale 9-10-2002, n. 1105/2002. Il progetto si propone di applicare avanzate tecniche diagnostiche strumentali al fine di acquisire la dettagliata conoscenza microchimica e microstrutturale di manufatti metallici e ceramici antichi, di definirne il meccanismo di alterazione e/o degrado e di progettare, sintetizzare e validare opportuni prodotti e formulazioni per il restauro conservativo di tali manufatti. Le conoscenze acquisite sono utilizzabili anche per il recupero delle antiche tecniche di produzione e per una loro possibile riproposizione sia nel campo del restauro integrativo che nell'ambito dell'artigianato culturale.

4. Recovering bronze metallurgy from archaeological artefacts for the production of reference materials in conservation science

Abstract

The production of reference Cu-based alloys is the first step of an original experimental protocol to be used in the field of conservation and restoration of metal artefacts. The production of these synthetic alloys has a double value. They can be used both as suitable substitutes of unique archaeological pieces for testing new materials and methods for conservation, and as guidelines for contemporary metal production. We report on a research activity focused on the recovery of the ancient production techniques from the investigation of archaeological copper-based artefacts. The chemical, physical and metallurgical characterization of several Cu-based artefacts, found in different Italian archaological sites, was carried out by bulk and surface techniques in order to investigate the nature and properties of the metallic substrates and the corrosion products. Chemical and metallurgial formulations of the ancient archaeological alloys were obtained by data analyses. On the basis of these results, a set of Cu-based alloys with different chemical compositions and metallurgical features was produced. The chemical and physical characterization showed that these modern Cu-based alloys strictly resemble the ancient ones constituting the archaeological artefacts from a chemical, micro-morphological and metallurgical point of view.

8. Microchemical study of the corrosion products on ancient bronzes by means of glow discharge optical emission spectrometry

Abstract

Glow discharge optical emission spectrometry (GDOES) has been used for studying the corrosion product layers, i.e. the patinae, on Punic bronze artefacts found at Tharros (western Sardinia, Italy) during an archaeological excavation. For all these materials, the results show that via GDOES it is possible to obtain reliable and reproducible quantitative chemical composition for the bulk alloys by taking into account that bronze artefacts are quite inhomogeneous. Some examples of the GDOES analytical capability as elemental depth–concentration profiles through thick bronze patinae are shown and briefly discussed in combination with the microchemical features obtained via scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM+EDS) and x-ray diffraction (XRD). These results show that GDOES, with its ability for routine and rapid analysis of layers of thickness up to 120 µm, has significant potential in studies of the corrosion products and for the restoration and conservation of ancient bronzes. 9. Microchemical study of the black gloss on red- and black-figured Attic vases

Abstract

The microchemistry of the black gloss decoration layer on black- and red-figured Attic vases (6th to 4th century BC) has been studied by means of selected-area x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS). The results show that the Attic black gloss is obtained from an illitic clay, enriched in iron oxide particles, that is applied on the vase body and fired in an oxidizing–reducing–oxidizing cycle at a top temperature of ~950 °C. Furthermore, the results disclose the presence in the black gloss of iron grains with a complex structure, constituted by discrete areas of single phases with Fe3+, Fe2+ and Fe0. These particles are finely dispersed in a vitreous Al–K- and Fe-enriched silicate where also Fe–C and C–C carbon atoms are present. The information about the raw materials and the firing process shows that the production of Attic vases is important for the history of the art as well as of the ceramic technology.
