Abstract

In the scope of refractories the characterisation of its behaviour faced with slag corrosive attacks that can appear during service has a great significance. However, satandarized laboratory tests for this characterization are not generally accepted by manufacturers and users of these refractories. The present report shows the development works for an inmersion type corrosion test. This test keeps the samples continuously moving inside the melt slag bath in order to accelerate (never modifying) the corrosion mechanisms, since this motion avoids the generation of a “non-active” slag zone all around the samples. The results of the first proofs show the suitability of this test as a laboratory test. It allows to achieve high corrosion levels in a very short time. Also, the ability for testing several samples simultaneously allows to get comparative results with high rapidity and reliability.En el campo de los refractarios resulta de gran importancia la caracterización de su comportamiento ante el ataque corrosivo por escorias a que pueden estar sometidos en servicio. Sin embargo no existen ensayos de laboratorio normalizados que sean generalmente aceptados por los fabricantes y usuarios de estos refractarios. En este artículo se exponen los trabajos de puesta a punto de un ensayo de corrosión por inmersión. En dicho ensayo, las probetas se mantienen en continuo movimiento dentro del baño con objeto de acelerar los mecanismos de corrosión (nunca modificarlos) que aparecen en servicio, al evitar la formación de un zona de escoria “inactiva” al rededor de dichas probetas. Los resultados de las pruebas realizadas muestran la idoneidad del ensayo propuesto como ensayo de laboratorio, ya que permite obtener grandes niveles de corrosión en tiempos muy cortos. Además la capacidad para ensayar varias probetas de manera simultánea permite obtener resultados comparativos muy rápidamente y de forma muy fiable.

Abstract

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O157: H7 is a food-borne pathogen and the major cause of hemorrhagic colitis. Pseudomonas is the genus most frequent psychrotrophic spoilage microorganisms present in milk. Two-species bacterial systems with Escherichia coli O157: H7, non-pathogenic Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas fluorescens in skimmed milk at 7, 13, 19, or 25 C was studied. Bacterial interactions were modelled after applying a Bayesian approach. No direct correlation between Pseudomonas fluorescent's growth rate and its effect on the maximum population densities of Escherichia coli species was found. The results show the complexity of the interactions between two species into a food model. The use of natural microbiota members to control foodborne pathogens could be useful to improve food safety during the processing and storage of refrigerated foods., Comment: 39 pages, 3 tables, 4 figures, 4 supplement figures

Abstract

Item does not contain fulltext, Previous genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of stroke - the second leading cause of death worldwide - were conducted predominantly in populations of European ancestry(1,2). Here, in cross-ancestry GWAS meta-analyses of 110,182 patients who have had a stroke (five ancestries, 33% non-European) and 1,503,898 control individuals, we identify association signals for stroke and its subtypes at 89 (61 new) independent loci: 60 in primary inverse-variance-weighted analyses and 29 in secondary meta-regression and multitrait analyses. On the basis of internal cross-ancestry validation and an independent follow-up in 89,084 additional cases of stroke (30% non-European) and 1,013,843 control individuals, 87% of the primary stroke risk loci and 60% of the secondary stroke risk loci were replicated (P < 0.05). Effect sizes were highly correlated across ancestries. Cross-ancestry fine-mapping, in silico mutagenesis analysis(3), and transcriptome-wide and proteome-wide association analyses revealed putative causal genes (such as SH3PXD2A and FURIN) and variants (such as at GRK5 and NOS3). Using a three-pronged approach(4), we provide genetic evidence for putative drug effects, highlighting F11, KLKB1, PROC, GP1BA, LAMC2 and VCAM1 as possible targets, with drugs already under investigation for stroke for F11 and PROC. A polygenic score integrating cross-ancestry and ancestry-specific stroke GWASs with vascular-risk factor GWASs (integrative polygenic scores) strongly predicted ischaemic stroke in populations of European, East Asian and African ancestry(5). Stroke genetic risk scores were predictive of ischaemic stroke independent of clinical risk factors in 52,600 clinical-trial participants with cardiometabolic disease. Our results provide insights to inform biology, reveal potential drug targets and derive genetic risk prediction tools across ancestries.

Abstract

Background: The phase III IMspire150 study (NCT02908672) demonstrated significantly improved progression-free survival (PFS) with atezolizumab, vemurafenib, and cobimetinib (atezolizumab group) versus placebo, vemurafenib, and cobimetinib (control group) in patients with BRAFV600-mutated advanced melanoma. We report exploratory biomarker analyses to optimize targeting of patients who are more likely to benefit from triplet combination therapy. Patients and methods: Five hundred fourteen patients were randomized to atezolizumab (n = 256) or control (n = 258). Outcomes were evaluated in subgroups defined by key biomarkers, including programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) level, tumor mutational burden (TMB), and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) gene signature. Exploratory recursive partitioning analysis was then used to model associations between PFS and baseline covariates, including key biomarkers. Abstract

Banana pseudo-stem (BPS), which is rich in fibre and polyphenols, is a potential functional ingredient for the food industry. In this study, BPS was added at concentrations of 1.5, 3.0, and 4.5 g/kg to a minced pork batter to evaluate its performance as a filler and to pork burger patties to evaluate its performance as a natural antioxidant. The effects of BPS were compared with those of carrageenan and ascorbate, which are a conventional binder and antioxidant, respectively. The performance of BPS was similar to that of carrageenan in terms of the cooking yield and texture of the cooked batter. BPS reduced the brightness of fresh patties and appeared to reduce oxidative discolouration during the frozen storage of raw patties. Moreover, BPS reduced the levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) during the refrigerated and frozen storage of cooked patties. A greater decrease in TBARS formation was observed with 4.5 g BPS/kg compared with 0.5 g sodium ascorbate/kg during refrigerated storage. In contrast to ascorbate, BPS promoted the presence of lipid-derived volatile compounds induced by thermal breakdown in the headspace of cooked patties. Nonetheless, this effect was reduced as the amount of BPS in the patties increased. In cooked minced meat products, BPS could increase cooking yields and lipid oxidative stability during storage and might result in a more intense flavour.

Abstract

In this viewpoint, we draw attention to using happiness in clinical studies as an interesting outcome that is highly relevant to patients with Parkinson's disease. Quality of life (QoL) is thus far commonly used as main outcome in clinical trials. Happiness is a part of Qol, but also represents a construct on its own. While QoL mainly consists of quality perceptions of different extrinsic aspects of life, such as the environment or performance, happiness entails the intrinsic quality of the subjective enjoyment of life. Around 70% of people rate happiness as the most important thing in life. Happiness can be a difficult construct to measure, but we argue that self-compassion and well-being could serve as reliable indicators for happiness. We expect that happiness as outcome could probe the true value of an intervention for a patient, well beyond what is captured by more traditional outcomes such as motor scores or the general concept of QoL, which better reflect external factors. Because of the apparent importance of happiness to many people, we recommend that this concept is used more widely as outcome measure in future clinical trials.

The hop extract immersion treatment resulted in a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in lactic acid bacteria counts during the first storage weeks and in Brochothrix thermosphacta counts from day 21 to 35. No effect could be observed on the Enterobacteriaceae growth. A triangle test analysis (54 consumers) tasting hop-extract-immersed vs water-immersed chicken breast showed no differences in cooked chicken flavor. Abstract

Changes in the levels of pH, lactic acid, acetic acid, headspace volatile compounds, and spoilage odour intensity during a 35 day refrigerated storage period in two sets of a Balkan-style fresh sausage, a control sausage (CON) and a sausage containing an aqueous hop extract (HOP), packaged under a 20% CO2 and 80% N2 atmosphere were evaluated. Storage resulted in progressive sausage acidification and increased the levels of acetic acid, 1-methylbutanol, ethyl acetate, ethyl hexanoate, and 2-ethylhexanol; all of which are associated with anaerobic microbial metabolism under sugar restricted conditions. Storage decreased the levels of hexanal, heptanal, pentanol, and garlic-derived organosulfur compounds. Hop extract showed oxygen scavenging abilities, and decreased the levels of the volatile compounds derived from lipid auto-oxidation while contributing to the presence of specific terpene compounds. The use of hop extract did not improve the shelf life of sausages packed under anaerobic atmosphere. The spoilage odour appeared in both types of sausages on the 14th day, and it was considered strong from day 21 onwards.

35. Characterization of Lactococcus strains isolated from artisanal Oaxaca cheese

Abstract

Lactococci strains obtained from raw-milk Oaxaca cheese through its production process in two factories from the Tulancingo Valley, Mexico, were isolated and characterized. A total of 120 colonies were selected from the growth in M17 and MRS agars. Twenty were identified as lactococci strains, all Lactococcus lactis, and were characterized by molecular and phenotypic methods including carbohydrate use, enzymatic profile, acidifying capacity, and antibiotic and phage resistance. High phenotypic diversity was observed and confirmed among the Lactococcus lactis strains by rep-PCR fingerprints. Fifty percent of the strains were resistant to streptomycin and 35% to erythromycin. Nine isolates were considered as fast acidifying strains. The predominant volatile compounds produced were 3-methylbutanol, 3-methylbutanal and butane-2,3-dione. A selection of strains isolated in this study has shown satisfactory characteristics to be used as potential starters for the industrial production of Oaxaca cheese.

37. Leucomelanoderma in blacks

Abstract

A recent epidemic of leucomelanoderma in Blacks is described. A total of 347 patients was seen in two hospitals during the survey period. The ratio of females to males was 7:1. A striking pattern af patchy depigmentation and mottled hypermelanosis occurred predominantly on the face and neck, but sometimes extended to other areas. Most but not all cases later showed repigmentation. The cause of the dyschromia appeared to be monobenzone, a bleaching agent recently included in certain overnight creams packed in wide-mouthed jars.S. Afr. Med. J., 48, 1555 (1974).

Sevilla, España, 17-19 septiembre, 2019., Fresh sausages are commonly packaged in anaerobic modified atmospheres and stored under refrigeration in order to achieve a long shelf life, i.e. few weeks. During storage and due to the internal conditions of fresh sausages (pH, aw, nutrient availability) there is a progressive development of facultative anaerobic bacteria, i.e. lactic acid bacteria or enterobacteria, which in the course of time results in product spoilage. The main reason for this is the production volatile compounds from microbial metabolism which can lead on the generation of undesirable flavours. In this study, the volatile compounds in a fresh Bosnian-style lamb sausage during refrigerated storage under 20% CO2 and 80% N2 atmosphere were weekly monitored for 35 days. Sausages were prepared in triplicate and volatiles were determined by head space solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The microbial origin volatiles detected at day 0 (stuffing into casings) were diacetyl, hexanol and ethylhexanol. At day 7 of storage appeared 3-methyl-butanal, 3-methyl-butanol and acetoin, at day 14 ethyl acetate, ethylhexanoate and benzene acetaldehyde, and at day 28 butanediol. Most of them tended to increase during storage until a point where their concentrations stabilise. Relevant increases were observed for diacetyl from day 0 to 7, 1-hexanol from day 14 to 21 (then tended to decrease) and acetoin from day 21 to 28. Moreover, ethyl acetate, acetoin, 3-methyl-butanol, ethylhexanoate and ethylhexanol increased from the day where they were detected to day 28. Meanwhile, butanediol and benzene acetaldehyde increased until the end of storage. Volatiles presumably originated from lipid oxidation, such as hexanal, 1-octen-3-ol or heptanal, were also detected and their concentration tended to be constant or decrease with time. Changes in volatiles due to microbial metabolism were already observed at day 7 of storage; however, the major changes were observed from days 14 to 28.
