- Abstract
We present a research project intended to investigate the structure of Cumbre Vieja volcano in La Palma, Canary Islands, after the September-December 2021 Tajogaite eruption. Starting in the summer of 2023, we will deploy a dense network of 35 broadband seismometers provided by GFZ and University of Granada, that will add up to the ~20 permanent stations already in operation by the Spanish National Geographic Institute (IGN) and the Volcanological Institute of Canary Islands (INVOLCAN). In this way, we expect to obtain a dense coverage of the whole island with inter-station distances of about 5 km. This broadband network will be in operation for a period of about a year. Additionally, we will perform a series of large-N experiments using 200 geophones (provided by GFZ). First we will deploy these instruments along linear profiles across the island, in N-S and E-W directions. In a second stage, we will move the geophones to a bidimensional grid configuration centered at the eruption site. We estimate that inter-station distances will be of ~0.5 km in both cases, and the recording periods will span around 4-5 months per configuration. The data obtained from these deployments will be used to perform a dense receiver function analysis and ambient noise tomography to improve the knowledge of the shallow velocity structure of the volcanic rift around the eruption area down to a depth of a few km and to image the magma sources in the crust and uppermost mantle., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

- Abstract
Forecasting volcanic activity is a difficult problem that is being addressed worldwide from different perspectives. Significant advances have been made after the introduction of non-linear dynamical systems theory and the use of power-law distributions of different geophysical parameters in the Earth Sciences. In particular, frequency-magnitude power-law statistics evidences the scale-invariance and self-organization of seismicity, and brittle fracture models show that under certain conditions, a precursory causal evolution characterized by an accelerating strain rate culminates in a catastrophic failure of the system under stress. The precursory organization of the seismicity and the distinct characteristics of the seismic events have allowed the development of forecasting tools. In this work we present some examples of forecasting methods based on seismic observations at different volcanoes in the world, and how results and experiences has been used to improve both hardware and software tools developed for short-term forecasting of volcanic and seismo-volcanic activity.

Delphi (DEtector with Lepton, Photon and Hadron Identification) is one of the four experiment of the LEP (Large Electron Positron) collider at CERN. The detector is laid out to provide a nearly 4[Pi] coverage for charged particle tracking, electromagnetic, hadronic calorimetry and extended particle identification. The trigger system consists of four levels. The first two are synchronous with the BCO (Beam Cross Over) and rely on hardwired control units, while the last two are performed asynchronously with respect to the BCO and are driven by the Delphi host computers. The aim of this paper is to give a comprehensive global view of the trigger system architecture, presenting in detail the first two levels, their various hardware components and the latest modifications introduced in order to improve their performance and make more user friendly the whole software user interface.

- Abstract
Most eruptions are fed by dikes whose spatial distribution can provide important insights into the positions of possible old eruptive centers that are no longer clearly identifiable in the field. Locating these centers can in turn have further applications, e.g., in hazard assessment. We propose a purely geometrical algorithm—implemented as an R open-source script—named FIERCE (FInding volcanic ERuptive CEnters) based on the number of intersections of dikes identified within a grid of rectangular cells overlain onto a given search region. The algorithm recognizes radial distributions, tangential distributions, or combinations of both. We applied FIERCE to both well-known and less-studied volcanic edifices, in different tectonic settings and having different evolution histories, ages, and compositions. At Summer Coon volcano, FIERCE demonstrated that a radial dike distribution clearly indicates the position of the central vent. On Etna, it confirmed the position of the most important ancient eruptive centers and allowed us to study effects of the structural alignments and topography. On Stromboli, FIERCE not only enabled confirmation of some published locations of older vents but also identified possible vent areas not previously suggested. It also highlighted the influence of the regional structural trend and the collapse scars. FIERCE demonstrated that the dikes at the Somma-Vesuvius were emplaced before formation of Mt. Somma’s caldera and indicated a plausible location for the old volcanic crater of Mt. Somma which is compatible with previous studies. - Abstract
Dykes at the Vicuña Pampa Volcanic Complex, which are mostly basaltic (trachy)-andesite and (trachy)-andesite, are exposed at the base and along the walls of a large depression resulting from intense degradation. Dykes intruding stiff layers (lavas, plugs and necks) are thin, mostly dip >60° and have coherent textures, whereas dykes intruding more compliant materials (breccias and conglomerates) tend to be thicker, have lower dips and have coherent, brecciated or mixed textures (coherent and brecciated textural domains in a single or compound dyke). Single dykes with brecciated and mixed textures are only found intruding near-surface units. Dykes with mixed textures always have sharp contacts between domains. Dykes with sinuous domain contacts and enclaves of one domain inside the other are interpreted as resulting from dyke arrest, partial cooling and reinjection of new magma. Dykes with straight domain contacts are considered to be compound dykes, with a new dyke intruding along the margins of an older, solidified one.

- Abstract
The Vicuña Pampa volcanic complex, at the SE edge of the arid Puna Plateau of the Central Andes, records the interplay between volcanic construction and degradational processes. The low-sloping Vicuña Pampa volcanic complex, with a 1200-mdeep, southeastward-opening depression, was previously interpreted as a collapse caldera based on morphological considerations. However, characteristic features associated with collapse calderas do not exist, and close inspection instead suggests that the Vicuña Pampa volcanic complex is a strongly eroded, broad, massif-type composite volcano of mainly basaltic to trachyandesitic composition. Construction of the Vicuña Pampa volcanic complex occurred during two distinct cycles separated by the development of the depression. The first and main cycle took place at ca. 12 Ma and was dominated by lava flows and subordinate scoria cones and domes. The second cycle, possibly late Miocene in age, affected the SW portion of the depression with the emplacement of domes. We interpret the central depression as the result of a possible sector collapse and subsequent intense fluvial erosion during middle to late Miocene time, facilitated by faulting, steepened topography, and wetter climate conditions compared to today. We estimate that ~65% of the initial edifice of ~240 km3 was degraded. The efficiency of degradation processes for removing mass from the Vicuña Pampa volcanic complex is surprising, considering that today the region is arid, and the stream channels within the complex are predominantly transport limited, forming a series of coalesced, aggraded alluvial fans and eolian infill. Hence, the Vicuña Pampa volcanic complex records the effects of past degradation efficiency that differs substantially from that of today.

In literature the treatment of rotator cuff syndrome is basically conservative using NSAIDs, cortisone infiltrations and cryotherapy to relieve pain, electroanalgesia, kinesiotherapy to restore the impaired mobility of the joint and strengthen the muscles, physical therapies using energy such as ultrasound, laser, hyperthermia and shock waves. In the case of lack of response to conservative treatment, arthroscopic surgery can be proposed. International literature is unanimous in considering the viscosupplementation as an effective treatment for reducing pain associated with the rotator cuff syndrome and improve joint function. The intra-articular treatment should ideally not only ensure the mechanical protection of the articular surface, but also rebalance homeostasis of chondrocytes through the restoration of the microenvironment and nutritional supplements of the joint. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of viscosupplementation with hyaluronic acid and polynucleotides in the treatment of patients with rotator cuff syndrome for incomplete lesion of the supraspinatus. 80 subjects (43 M - 37 F) aged between 40 and 65 years (average age 54) were evaluated and treated. All they suffered from rotator cuff syndrome with incomplete injury of the tendon of the supraspinatus ascertained clinically and by ultrasound examination and MRI. The subjects were randomly divided into 2 groups (A and B). Group A made 4 sessions of infiltrative treatment with hyaluronic acid, once per week. Group B made 4 sessions of infiltrative treatment with infiltrative polynucleotides, 1 time per week. All subjects performed, during the whole period of treatment, upper limb proprioception and joint ROM functional recovery with Multi Joint System (MJS) at a frequency of 3 weekly sessions each one of 45 minutes. The results are comparable in the two groups in terms of improvement in both short and medium term. In view of these evidences we could hypothesize that the association of supplementation of the 2 elements, given together or temporally delayed could be further significant for an additional maintenance of results in the long term.

One of the main requirements in enabling autonomous flight of Micro Aerial Vehicles is the ability of autonomous navigation. One possible solution to solve this navigation problem is to use vision-based line-following algorithms. Such vision-based algorithm could rely on the various linear structures, which are present in the human constructed environment. Edge detection and disparity estimation have proven to be strong algorithms for the detection of nearby objects. However, these detection algorithms have their weaknesses. The candidate lines found by both algorithms are input for the Probabilistic Hough Transform, which is used to select the best candidate and to determine a directional vector from this line. This paper is a survey for the experimental circumstances to fairly test both algorithms for a line-following task, which is one of the challenges of the Indoor Micro Aerial Vehicle competition.

This paper presents a GIS-based methodology to estimate damages produced by volcanic eruptions. The methodology is constituted by four parts: definition and simulation of eruptive scenarios, exposure analysis, vulnerability assessment and estimation of expected damages. Multi-hazard eruptive scenarios are defined for the Teide–Pico Viejo active volcanic complex, and simulated through the VORIS tool. The exposure analysis identifies the elements exposed to the hazard at stake and focuses on the relevant assets for the study area. The vulnerability analysis is based on previous studies on the built environment and complemented with the analysis of transportation and urban infrastructures. Damage assessment is performed associating a qualitative damage rating to each combination of hazard and vulnerability. This operation consists in a GIS-based overlap, performed for each hazardous phenomenon considered and for each element. The methodology is then automated into a GIS-based tool using an ArcGIS® program. Given the eruptive scenarios and the characteristics of the exposed elements, the tool produces expected damage maps. The tool is applied to the Icod Valley (North of Tenerife Island) which is likely to be affected by volcanic phenomena in case of eruption from both the Teide–Pico Viejo volcanic complex and North-West basaltic rift. Results are thematic maps of vulnerability and damage that can be displayed at different levels of detail, depending on the user preferences. The aim of the tool is to facilitate territorial planning and risk management in active volcanic areas.

28. Volcanic tremors: Good indicators of change in plumbing systems during volcanic eruptions

- Abstract
Geophysical and geochemical signals recorded during episodes of unrest preceding volcanic eruptions provide information on movements of magma inside the lithosphere and on how magma prepares to reach the surface. When the eruption ensues continuous volcanic monitoring can reveal the nature of changes occurring in the volcano’s plumbing system, which may be correlated with changes in both eruption behaviour and products. During the 2011–2012 submarine eruption of El Hierro (Canary Islands), the seismic signal, surface deformation, a broad stain on the sea surface of the eruption site, and the occasional appearance of floating lava balloons and pyroclastic fragments were the main observable signs. A strong continuous tremor in the vent accompanied the eruption and varied significantly in amplitude, frequency and dynamical parameters. We analysed these variations and correlated them with changes in the distribution of earthquakes and in the petrology of the erupting magma. This enabled us to relate variations in tremors to changes in the (i) stress conditions of the plumbing system, (ii) dimensions of the conduit and vent, (iii) intensity of the explosive episodes, and to (iv) rheological changes in the erupting magma. The results obtained show how the tremor signal was strongly influenced by stress changes in the host rock and in the rheological variations in the erupting magma. We conclude that the tracking of real-time syn-eruptive tremor signals via the observation of variations in plumbing systems and magma physics is a potentially effective tool for interpreting eruption dynamics, and suggest that similar variations observed in pre-eruptive tremors will have a similar origin.

DELPHI is a 4pi detector with emphasis on particle identification, three-dimensional information, high granularity and precise vertex determination. The design criteria, the construction of the detector and the performance during the first year of operation at the large electron positron collider (LEP) at CERN are described.

The continuous background seismic activity contains information on the internal state of a volcanic system. Here, we report the influence of major regional tectonic earthquakes (M > 5 in most cases) on such state, reflected as changes in the spectral and dynamical parameters of the volcano continuous seismic data. Although changes do not always occur, analysis of five cases of earthquake-induced variations in the signals recorded at Popocatépetl volcano in central México reveal significant fluctuations following the tectonic earthquakes. External visible volcanic activity, such as small to moderate explosions and ash emissions, were related to those fluctuations. We briefly discuss possible causes of the variations. We conclude that recognition of fluctuations in the dynamical parameters in volcano monitoring seismic signals after tectonic earthquakes, even those located in the far field, hundreds of kilometers away, may provide an additional criterion for eruption forecasting, and for decision making in the definition of volcanic alert levels. © 2012 Versita Warsaw and Springer-Verlag Wien.
