Abstract

The Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) is one of the four focal plane instruments on the James Webb Space Telescope. In this paper, we summarize the in-orbit performance of NIRSpec, as derived from data collected during its commissioning campaign and the first few months of nominal science operations. More specifically, we discuss the performance of some critical hardware components such as the two NIRSpec Hawaii-2RG (H2RG) detectors, wheel mechanisms, and the micro-shutter array. We also summarize the accuracy of the two target acquisition procedures used to accurately place science targets into the slit apertures, discuss the current status of the spectro-photometric and wavelength calibration of NIRSpec spectra, and provide the as measured sensitivity in all NIRSpec science modes. Abstract

Surveys with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) have discovered candidate galaxies in the first 400 Myr of cosmic time. Preliminary indications have suggested these candidate galaxies may be more massive and abundant than previously thought. However, without confirmed distances, their inferred properties remain uncertain. Here we identify four galaxies located in the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey Near-Infrared Camera imaging with photometric redshifts z of roughly 10–13. These galaxies include the first redshift z > 12 systems discovered with distances spectroscopically confirmed by JWST in a companion paper. Using stellar population modelling, we find the galaxies typically contain 100 million solar masses in stars, in stellar populations that are less than 100 million years old. The moderate star-formation rates and compact sizes suggest elevated star-formation rate surface densities, a key indicator of their formation pathways. Taken together, these measurements show that the first galaxies contributing to cosmic reionization formed rapidly and with intense internal radiation fields.

Abstract

We present ALMA Band 9 continuum observation of the ultraluminous quasi-stellar object (QSO) SDSS J0100+2802, providing a ∼ 10σ detection at ∼ 670 GHz. SDSS J0100+2802 is the brightest QSO with the most massive super massive black hole (SMBH) known at z > 6, and we study its dust spectral energy distribution in order to determine the dust properties and the star formation rate (SFR) of its host-galaxy. We obtain the most accurate estimate so far of the temperature, mass and emissivity index of the dust, having Tdust = 48.4 ± 2.3 K, Mdust = (2.29 ± 0.83) × 107 M , β = 2.63 ± 0.23. This allows us to measure the SFR with the smallest statistical error for this QSO, SFR= 265 ± 32 M yr−1. Our results enable us to evaluate the relative growth of the SMBH and host galaxy of J0100+2802, finding that the SMBH is dominating the process of BH-galaxy growth in this QSO at z = 6.327, when the Universe was 865 Myr old. Such unprecedented constraints on the host galaxy SFR and dust temperature can only be obtained through high frequency observations, and highlight the importance of ALMA Band 9 to obtain a robust overview of the build-up of the first quasars’ host galaxies at z > 6.

Abstract

Large-scale outflows are believed to be an important mechanism in the evolution of galaxies. We can determine the impact of these outflows by studying either current galaxy outflows and their effect in the galaxy or by studying the effect of past outflows on the gas surrounding the galaxy. In this work, we examine the CO(7−6), [C i] ($^{3} \rm P_{1} \rightarrow {\rm ^3 P}_{0}$), H2O 211–202, and dust continuum emission of 15 extremely red quasars at z ∼ 2.3 using ALMA. By investigating the radial surface brightness profiles of both the individual sources and the stacked emission, we detect extended cold gas and dust emission on scales of ∼14 kpc in CO(7−6), [C i](2−1), and dust continuum. This is the first time that the presence of a large amount of molecular gas was detected on large, circumgalactic medium scales around quasar host galaxies using [C i] extended emission. We estimate the dust and molecular gas mass of these haloes to be 107.6 and 1010.6 M⊙, indicating significant dust and molecular gas reservoirs around these extreme quasars. By estimating the time-scale at which this gas can reach these distances by molecular gas outflows (7–32 Myr), we conclude that these haloes are a relic of past AGN or starburst activity, rather than an effect of the current episode of extreme quasar activity.

Abstract

Finding and characterising the first galaxies that illuminated the early Universe at cosmic dawn is pivotal to understand the physical conditions and the processes that led to the formation of the first stars. In the first few months of operations, imaging from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) have been used to identify tens of candidates of galaxies at redshift (z) greater than 10, less than 450 million years after the Big Bang. However, none of these candidates has yet been confirmed spectroscopically, leaving open the possibility that they are actually low-redshift interlopers. Abstract

The dramatic first images with James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) demonstrated its power to provide unprecedented spatial detail for galaxies in the high-redshift universe. Here, we leverage the resolution and depth of the JWST Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science Survey (CEERS) data in the Extended Groth Strip (EGS) to perform pixel-level morphological classifications of galaxies in JWST F150W imaging using the Morpheus deep learning framework for astronomical image analysis. By cross-referencing with existing photometric redshift catalogs from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) CANDELS survey, we show that JWST images indicate the emergence of disk morphologies before z~2 and with candidates appearing as early as z~5. By modeling the light profile of each object and accounting for the JWST point-spread function, we find the high-redshift disk candidates have exponential surface brightness profiles with an average Sersic (1968) index n=1.04 and >90% displaying "disky" profiles (n, Submitted to AAS Journals

Abstract

The Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) is one of the four focal plane instruments on the James Webb Space Telescope. In this paper, we summarize the in-orbit performance of NIRSpec, as derived from data collected during its commissioning campaign and the first few months of nominal science operations. More specifically, we discuss the performance of some critical hardware components such as the two NIRSpec Hawaii-2RG (H2RG) detectors, wheel mechanisms, and the micro-shutter array. We also summarize the accuracy of the two target acquisition procedures used to accurately place science targets into the slit apertures, discuss the current status of the spectro-photometric and wavelength calibration of NIRSpec spectra, and provide the as measured sensitivity in all NIRSpec science modes. Finally, we point out a few important considerations for the preparation of NIRSpec science programs., accepted by PASP for special issue on JWST in-orbit performance

Abstract

We make use of ALMA continuum observations of $15$ luminous Lyman-break galaxies at $z$$\sim$$7$$-$$8$ to probe their dust-obscured star-formation. These observations are sensitive enough to probe to obscured SFRs of $20$ $M_{\odot}$$/$$yr$ ($3\sigma$). Six of the targeted galaxies show significant ($\geq$$3$$\sigma$) dust continuum detections, more than doubling the number of known dust-detected galaxies at $z$$>$$6.5$. Their IR luminosities range from $2.7$$\times$$10^{11}$ $L_{\odot}$ to $1.1$$\times$$10^{12}$ $L_{\odot}$, equivalent to obscured SFRs of $20$ to $105$ $M_{\odot}$$/$$yr$. We use our results to quantify the correlation of the infrared excess IRX on the UV-continuum slope $\beta_{UV}$ and stellar mass. Our results are most consistent with an SMC attenuation curve for intrinsic $UV$-slopes $\beta_{UV,intr}$ of $-2.63$ and most consistent with an attenuation curve in-between SMC and Calzetti for $\beta_{UV,intr}$ slopes of $-2.23$, assuming a dust temperature $T_d$ of $50$ K. Our fiducial IRX-stellar mass results at $z$$\sim$$7$$-$$8$ are consistent with marginal evolution from $z$$\sim$$0$. We then show how both results depend on $T_d$. Abstract

We report the detection of [O I]145.5um in the BR 1202-0725 system, a compact group at z=4.7 consisting of a quasar (QSO), a submillimeter-bright galaxy (SMG), and three faint Lya emitters. By taking into account the previous detections and upper limits, the [O I]/[C II] line ratios of the now five known high-z galaxies are higher than or on the high-end of the observed values in local galaxies ([O I]/[C II]$\gtrsim$0.13). The high [O I]/[C II] ratios and the joint analysis with the previous detection of [N II] lines for both the QSO and the SMG suggest the presence of warm and dense neutral gas in these highly star-forming galaxies. This is further supported by new CO (12-11) line detections and a comparison with cosmological simulations. There is a possible positive correlation between the [NII]122/205 line ratio and the [O I]/[C II] ratio when all local and high-z sources are taken into account, indicating that the denser the ionized gas, the denser and warmer the neutral gas (or vice versa). The detection of the [O I] line in the BR1202-0725 system with a relatively short amount of integration with ALMA demonstrates the great potential of this line as a dense gas tracer for high-z galaxies., STFC ERC

Abstract

We used MUSE adaptive optics data in narrow field mode to study the properties of the ionised gas in MR 2251-178 and PG 1126-041, two nearby (z0.06) bright quasars (QSOs) hosting sub-pc scale ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) detected in the X-ray band. We decomposed the optical emission from diffuse gas into a low- and a high-velocity components. The former is characterised by a clean, regular velocity field and a low (∼80 km s-1) velocity dispersion. It traces regularly rotating gas in PG 1126-041, while in MR 2251-178 it is possibly associated with tidal debris from a recent merger or flyby. The other component is found to be extended up to a few kpc from the nuclei, and shows a high (∼800 km s-1) velocity dispersion and a blue-shifted mean velocity, as is expected from outflows driven by active galactic nuclei (AGN). We estimate mass outflow rates up to a few Mpdbl yr-1 and kinetic efficiencies LKIN/LBOL between 1-4 × 10-4, in line with those of galaxies hosting AGN of similar luminosities. The momentum rates of these ionised outflows are comparable to those measured for the UFOs at sub-pc scales, which is consistent with a momentum-driven wind propagation. Pure energy-driven winds are excluded unless about 100× additional momentum is locked in massive molecular winds. Abstract

Context. The existence of tight correlations between supermassive black holes (BHs) and their host galaxies' properties in the local Universe suggests a closely linked evolution. Investigating these relations up to the high redshifts (z ≳ 6) is crucial in order to understand the interplay between star formation and BH growth across the cosmic time and to set constraints on galaxy formation and evolution models. In this work, we focus on the relation between BH mass (MBH) and the dynamical mass (Mdyn) of the host galaxy. Aims. Previous works suggest an evolution of the MBH-Mdyn relation with redshift indicating that BH growth precedes the galaxy mass assembly during their co-evolution at z > 3. However, dynamical galaxy masses at high redshift are often estimated through the virial theorem, thus introducing significant uncertainties. Within the scope of this work, our aim is to study the MBH-Mdyn relation of a sample of 2 < z < 7 quasars by constraining their galaxy masses through a full kinematical modelling of the cold gas kinematics, thus avoiding all possible biases and effects introduced by the rough estimates usually adopted so far. Methods. For this purpose, we retrieved public observations of 72 quasar host galaxies observed in [CII]158 μm or CO transitions with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA). We then selected those quasars whose line emission is spatially resolved, and performed a kinematic analysis on ALMA observations. We estimated the dynamical mass of the systems by modelling the gas kinematics with a rotating disc, taking into account geometrical and instrumental effects. Our dynamical mass estimates, combined with MBH obtained from literature and our own new CIVλ1550 observations allowed us to investigate the MBH/Mdyn in the early Universe. Results. Overall, we obtained a sample of ten quasars at z ∼ 2-7, in which line emission is detected with high S/N (≳ 5-10) and the gas kinematics are spatially resolved and dominated by ordered rotation. The estimated dynamical masses place six out of ten quasars above the local relation yielding to MBH/Mdyn ratios ∼10× higher than those estimated in low-z galaxies. On the other hand, we found that four quasars at z ∼ 4-6 have dynamical-to-BH-mass ratios consistent with what is observed in early-type galaxies in the local Universe., With funding from the Spanish government through the "María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence" accreditation (MDM-2017-0737)

Abstract

The SINFONI survey for Unveiling the Physics and Effect of Radiative feedback (SUPER) aims at tracing and characterizing ionized gas outflows and their impact on star formation in a statistical sample of X-ray selected Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) at z$\sim$2. We present the first SINFONI results for a sample of 21 Type-1 AGN spanning a wide range in bolometric luminosity (log $\mathrm{L_{bol}}$ = 45.4-47.9 erg/s). The main aims of this paper are determining the extension of the ionized gas, characterizing the occurrence of AGN-driven outflows, and linking the properties of such outflows with those of the AGN. We use Adaptive Optics-assisted SINFONI observations to trace ionized gas in the extended narrow line region using the [OIII]5007 line. We classify a target as hosting an outflow if its non-parametric velocity of the [OIII] line, $\mathrm{w_{80}}$, is larger than 600 km/s. We study the presence of extended emission using dedicated point-spread function (PSF) observations, after modelling the PSF from the Balmer lines originating from the Broad Line Region. We detect outflows in all the Type-1 AGN sample based on the $\mathrm{w_{80}}$ value from the integrated spectrum, which is in the range 650-2700 km/s. There is a clear positive correlation between $\mathrm{w_{80}}$ and the AGN bolometric luminosity (99% correlation probability), but a weaker correlation with the black hole mass (80% correlation probability). A comparison of the PSF and the [OIII] radial profile shows that the [OIII] emission is spatially resolved for $\sim$35% of the Type-1 sample and the outflows show an extension up to $\sim$6 kpc. The relation between maximum velocity and the bolometric luminosity is consistent with model predictions for shocks from an AGN driven outflow. The escape fraction of the outflowing gas increase with the AGN luminosity, although for most galaxies, this fraction is less than 10%., Accepted for publication in A&A, 34 pages, 14 figures and 5 tables

Abstract

We report the discovery of Serenity-18, a galaxy at z=5.939 for which we could measure the content of molecular gas, M(H_2)~ 5 x10^9 M_sun, traced by the CO(6-5) emission, together with the metal-poor ([Fe/H]=-3.08 +- 0.12, [Si/H]=-2.86 +- 0.14) gas clump/filament which is possibly feeding its growth. The galaxy has an estimated star formation rate of ~100 M_sun yr^{-1}, implying that it is a typical main sequence galaxy at these redshifts. The metal-poor gas is detected through a damped Lyman-alpha absorber (DLA) observed at a spatial separation of 40 kpc and at the same redshift of Serenity-18, along the line of sight to the quasar SDSS J2310+1855 (z_em = 6.0025). Abstract

We present deep spectroscopic follow-up observations of the Bremer Deep Field (BDF) where the two $z\sim$7 bright Ly$\alpha$ emitters (LAE) BDF521 and BDF3299 were previously discovered by Vanzella et al. (2011) and where a factor of $\sim$3-4 overdensity of faint LBGs has been found by Castellano et al. (2016). We confirm a new bright Ly$\alpha$ emitter, BDF2195, at the same redshift of BDF521, $z=7.008$, and at only $\sim$90 kpc physical distance from it, confirming that the BDF area is likely an overdense, reionized region. A quantitative assessment of the Ly$\alpha$ fraction shows that the number of detected bright emitters is much higher than the average found at z$\sim$7, suggesting a high Ly$\alpha$ transmission through the inter-galactic medium (IGM). However, the line visibility from fainter galaxies is at odds with this finding, since no Ly$\alpha$ emission is found in any of the observed candidates with $M_{UV}>$-20.25. This discrepancy can be understood either if some mechanism prevents Ly$\alpha$ emission from fainter galaxies within the ionized bubbles from reaching the observer, or if faint galaxies are located outside the reionized area and bright LAEs are solely responsible for the creation of their own HII regions. A thorough assessment of the nature of the BDF region and of its sources of re-ionizing radiation will be made possible by JWST spectroscopic capabilities., ERC STFC

Abstract

Himiko is one of the most luminous Ly{\alpha} emitters at z = 6.595. It has three star forming clumps detected in the rest-frame UV, with a total SFR = 20 M$_\odot$/yr. We report the ALMA detection of the [CII]158$\mu$m line emission in this galaxy with a significance of 9$\sigma$. The total [CII] luminosity (L[CII]= (1.2$\pm$0.2)$\times$10$^{8}$ L$_{\odot}$) is fully consistent with the local L[CII]-SFR relation. The ALMA high-angular resolution reveals that the [CII] emission is made of two distinct components. The brightest [CII] clump is extended over 4 kpc and is located on the peak of the Ly{\alpha} nebula, which is spatially offset by 1 kpc relative to the brightest UV clump.
