- Abstract
Standardised terminology in science is important for clarity of interpretation and communication. In invasion science – a dynamic and rapidly evolving discipline – the proliferation of technical terminology has lacked a standardised framework for its development. The result is a convoluted and inconsistent usage of terminology, with various discrepancies in descriptions of damage and interventions. A standardised framework is therefore needed for a clear, universally applicable, and consistent terminology to promote more effective communication across researchers, stakeholders, and policymakers. Inconsistencies in terminology stem from the exponential increase in scientific publications on the patterns and processes of biological invasions authored by experts from various disciplines and countries since the 1990s, as well as publications by legislators and policymakers focusing on practical applications, regulations, and management of resources. Aligning and standardising terminology across stakeholders remains a challenge in invasion science. Here, we review and evaluate the multiple terms used in invasion science (e.g. ‘non‐native’, ‘alien’, ‘invasive’ or ‘invader’, ‘exotic’, ‘non‐indigenous’, ‘naturalised’, ‘pest’) to propose a more simplified and standardised terminology. The streamlined framework we propose and translate into 28 other languages is based on the terms (i) ‘non‐native’, denoting species transported beyond their natural biogeographic range, (ii) ‘established non‐native’, i.e. those non‐native species that have established self‐sustaining populations in their new location(s) in the wild, and (iii) ‘invasive non‐native’ – populations of established non‐native species that have recently spread or are spreading rapidly in their invaded range actively or passively with or without human mediation. We also highlight the importance of conceptualising ‘spread’ for classifying invasiveness and ‘impact’ for management. Finally, we propose a protocol for class

ABSTRACT The introduction of invasive species has become an increasing environmental problem in freshwater ecosystems due to the high economic and ecological impacts it has generated. This systematic review covers publications from 2010 to 2020, focusing on non‐native invasive freshwater bivalves, a particularly relevant and widespread introduced taxonomic group in fresh waters. We collected information on the most studied species, the main objectives of the studies, their geographical location, study duration, and type of research. Furthermore, we focused on assessing the levels of ecological evidence presented, the type of interactions of non‐native bivalves with other organisms and the classification of their impacts. A total of 397 publications were retrieved. The studies addressed a total of 17 species of non‐native freshwater bivalves; however, most publications focused on the species Corbicula fluminea and Dreissena polymorpha, which are recognised for their widespread distribution and extensive negative impacts. Many other non‐native invasive bivalve species have been poorly studied. A high geographical bias was also present, with a considerable lack of studies in developing countries. The most frequent studies had shorter temporal periods, smaller spatial extents, and more observational data, were field‐based, and usually evaluated possible ecological impacts at the individual and population levels. There were 94 publications documenting discernible impacts according to the Environmental Impact Classification for Alien Taxa (EICAT). However, 41 of these publications did not provide sufficient data to determine an impact. The most common effects of invasive bivalves on ecosystems were structural alterations, and chemical and physical changes, which are anticipated due to their role as ecosystem engineers. Despite a considerable number of studies in the field and advances in our understanding of some species over the past decade, long‐term data and large‐scale studies are still needed to understand better the impacts, particularly at the community and ecosystem levels and in less‐studied geographic regions. The widespread distribution of several non‐native freshwater bivalves, their ongoing introductions, and high ecological and economic impacts demand continued research. Systematic reviews such as this are essential for identifying knowledge gaps and guiding future research to enable a more complete understanding of the ecological implications of invasive bivalves, and the development of effective management strategies. - Abstract
Biological invasions are a global challenge that has received insufficient attention. Recently available cost syntheses have provided policy- and decision makers with reliable and up-to-date information on the economic impacts of biological invasions, aiming to motivate effective management. The resultant InvaCost database is now publicly and freely accessible and enables rapid extraction of monetary cost information. This has facilitated knowledge sharing, developed a more integrated and multidisciplinary network of researchers, and forged multidisciplinary collaborations among diverse organizations and stakeholders. Over 50 scientific publications so far have used the database and have provided detailed assessments of invasion costs across geographic, taxonomic, and spatiotemporal scales. These studies have provided important information that can guide future policy and legislative decisions on the management of biological invasions while simultaneously attracting public and media attention. We provide an overview of the improved availability, reliability, standardization, and defragmentation of monetary costs; discuss how this has enhanced invasion science as a discipline; and outline directions for future development.

- Abstract
The Neotropical region hosts 4225 freshwater fish species, ranking first among the world's most diverse regions for freshwater fishes. Our NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set is the first to produce a large-scale Neotropical freshwater fish inventory, covering the entire Neotropical region from Mexico and the Caribbean in the north to the southern limits in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. We compiled 185,787 distribution records, with unique georeferenced coordinates, for the 4225 species, represented by occurrence and abundance data. The number of species for the most numerous orders are as follows: Characiformes (1289), Siluriformes (1384), Cichliformes (354), Cyprinodontiformes (245), and Gymnotiformes (135). The most recorded species was the characid Astyanax fasciatus (4696 records). We registered 116,802 distribution records for native species, compared to 1802 distribution records for nonnative species. The main aim of the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set was to make these occurrence and abundance data accessible for international researchers to develop ecological and macroecological studies, from local to regional scales, with focal fish species, families, or orders. We anticipate that the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set will be valuable for studies on a wide range of ecological processes, such as trophic cascades, fishery pressure, the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation, and the impacts of species invasion and climate change. There are no copyright restrictions on the data, and please cite this data paper when using the data in publications.

Introduction: There are several factors that can contribute to the increase in body fat, such as increased food intake, lack of time to prepare meals, increase in product offering, difficulties in choosing healthy food and lack of physical exercise. Objective: To evaluate the percentage variation of body fat in patients at a medical weight loss clinical in Montes Claros - MG. Materials and Methods: Retrospective longitudinal study and a quantitative approach. Sixty medical records were evaluated, in both sexes, which aimed at reducing body fat. Bioimpedance test data were collected to compare the initial measurements and also after eight weeks of nutritional monitoring. The analyzis was presented using descriptive statistics, and also being verified by t-test of student. Results and Discussion: Out of the 60 medical records, 88.3% (n = 53) were female, the age of the sample ranged from 18 to 49 years. After nutritional intervention, there was an average loss of 5.7 kg in body weight, when comparing the average weight before and after 8-week follow-up. When checking the classification of body fat percentage for each age, it revealed that in all age groups there was a decrease in body fat. When there is a reduction in body fat, a decline in BMI classification can occur and therefore it decreases the risk of obesity. Conclusion: The nutritional monitoring showed up important to significantly improve the reduction of body fat. - Abstract
Summary: Biological invasions represent one of the main threats to biodiversity and a recognized economic burden worldwide; the issue has been included in the conservation agenda such as the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). Brazil is a signatory country of the CBD; however, the number of alien species records in its territory is continuously rising. To evaluate the invasive alien species (IAS) policy in Brazil, we reviewed the legislation delineating historical trends to identify potential gaps and avenues for improvement. We consulted several websites using keywords related to invasions in order to track legal instruments such as laws, decrees and regulations. We classified the documents regarding their main aims with regard to IAS, taxon and environment of interest. We found 85 legal instruments in force related to IAS published in the federal sphere up to October 2021, with decrees being the most common type. Most documents were classified as 'control' and 'prevention' and were related to all taxa and environments. Two species (wild boar Sus scrofa and golden mussel Limnoperna fortunei) have more specific legislation, probably due to their conspicuous economic impacts. We discuss policy gaps and their implications for the efficient management and prevention of new IAS introductions to the country. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Non-native fish (NNF) can threaten megadiverse aquatic ecosystems throughout the planet, but limited information is available for the Amazon Region. In this study we review NNF data in the Amazonian macroregion using spatiotemporal records on the occurrence and the richness of NNF from a collaborative network of 35 regional experts, establishing the Amazon NNF database (ANNF). The NNF species richness was analyzed by river basin and by country, as well as the policies for each geopolitical division for the Amazon. The analysis included six countries (Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Venezuela, and Colombia), together comprising more than 80% of the Amazon Region. A total of 1314 NNF occurrence records were gathered. The first record of NNF in this region was in 1939 and there has been a marked increase in the last 20 years (2000–2020), during which 75% of the records were observed. The highest number of localities with NNF occurrence records was observed for Colombia, followed by Brazil and Bolivia. The NNF records include 9 orders, 17 families and 41 species. Most of the NNF species are also used in aquaculture (12 species) and in the aquarium trade (12 species). The most frequent NNF detected were Arapaima gigas, Poecilia reticulata and Oreochromis niloticus. The current data highlight that there are few documented cases on NNF in the Amazon, their negative impacts and management strategies adopted. The occurrence of NNF in the Amazon Region represents a threat to native biodiversity that has been increasing “silently” due to the difficulties of large-scale sampling and low number of NNF species reported when compared to other South American regions. The adoption of effective management measures by decision-makers is urgently needed and their enforcement needed to change this alarming trend and help protect the Amazon’s native fish diversity.

Conclusion: The nutritional monitoring showed up important to significantly improve the reduction of body fat., Introduzione: Ci sono diversi fattori che possono contribuire all'aumento del grasso corporeo, come l'aumento dell'assunzione di cibo, la mancanza di tempo per preparare i pasti, l'aumento dell'offerta di prodotti, la difficoltà nella scelta di cibi sani e la mancanza di esercizio fisico. The Environmental Reserve Quotas are an instrument brought by Law n. 12,651, dated May 25, 2012, which proposes to optimize agricultural production and reconcile it to environmental preservation through negotiable securities in the financial market. It is a legal and economic instrument inserted in the logic of environmental preservation through the commercialization of speculative titles, which, in this case, are extensions of preserved forest. Despite its formal existence in Law no. 4,771, dated September 15, 1965, the experience brought by the new law is still quite recent, its applicability, realization, effectiveness, implications and possible misrepresentations of its initial purposes being unclear. The analysis is based on what is most relevant on the subject, adopting as theoretical framework the idea of the author Amyra El Khalili that today we live a worldwide tendency to the financialization of nature, translated into a commoditization of natural assets, allied to the theory of Frais Ost, that nature undergoes a process of reification over the years. From this, it is demonstrated that the CRAs are instruments that represent a technical and / or political solution to the problem of deforestation generated by unsustainable agricultural production, combined with other public policies and efficient monitoring. Therefore, it is proposed to discuss what is the financialization of nature and what are the main criticisms of this global trend, specifically the CRA, in the context of a Forest Code sanctioned in an environment of tension between farmers and environmentalists. The work will seek to show that the CRA can be a useful tool to reduce the impacts of deforestation, but that, taken in isolation, does not face the bigger problem that nature is reduced to a simple commodity.

Abstract: The transformation of a lotic to a lentic environment associated with anthropogenic changes in the watershed impacts water resources and environmental resilience in relation to disturbances such as excessive nutrient and sediment inputs, which favors the eutrophication process of reservoirs. A distributed hydrological model allows the quantification of the nutrient loads generated in the river basin and in the rivers, and their coupling to an ecological model allows to evaluate the trophic degrees of a reservoir in different scenarios, since the biological processes are considered. In this study, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was used to generate the simulations of nutrient series in the watershed, and a system of equations of the ecological model that simulates the interaction between phytoplankton and zooplankton, and aggregates the nitrogen and phosphorus cycle to the growth rate of the phytoplankton, providing the balance of nutrients in the reservoir. The study area used was the Rio Verde basin, because it is a basin with intense agrarian use and has a reservoir for public and industrial supplies. The model coupling generated daily flow and nutrient load results for the basin and reservoir, and a modified trophic state index (IETmod) was proposed, adapted to the new land use change scenarios. The results showed that the IETmod is more appropriate to classify highly impacted environments and with co-limitation of nutrients. The Rio Verde reservoir was classified as mesotrophic for the current and eutrophic scenario for the proposed scenarios. The set of methodologies applied in this study, denominated distributed 0D model (0DD), can be replicated in other watersheds to evaluate the impacts of land use variation on water quality. Keywords: Hydro-ecological Model, Water Quality, Land Use Variation.
