Recent experimental fatigue crack growth studies have concluded an apparent anomalous behavior of short cracks. To investigate the reasons for this unexpected behavior, the present paper focuses on identifying the crack length circumstances under which the requirements for a single parameter (K(sub I) or delta K(sub I) if cyclic loading is considered) characterization are violated. Furthermore, an additional quantity, the T stress, as introduced by Rice, and the related biaxiality ratio, B, are calculated for several crack lengths and two configurations, the single-edge-cracked and the centrally-cracked specimen. It is postulated that a two-parameter characterization by K and T (or B) is needed for the adequate description of the stress and strain field around a short crack. To further verify the validity of this postulate, the influence of the third term of the Williams series on the stress, strain and displacement fields around the crack tip and in particular on the B parameter is also examined. It is found that the biaxiality ratio would be more negative if the third term effects are included in both geometries. The study is conducted using the finite element method with linearly elastic material and isoparametric elements and axial (mode I) loading. Moreover, it is clearly shown that it is not proper to postulate the crack size limits for 'short crack' behavior as a normalized ratio with the specimen width, a/w; it should instead be stated as an absolute, or normalized with respect to a small characteristic dimension such as the grain size. Finally, implications regarding the prediction of cyclic (fatigue) growth of short cracks are discussed.

The object of the research reported herein was to develop a general mathematical model and solution methodologies for analyzing the structural response of thin, metallic shell structures under large transient, cyclic, or static thermochemical loads. This report describes the computer program resulting from the research. Among the system responses associated with these loads and conditions are thermal buckling, creep buckling, and ratcheting. Thus geometric and material nonlinearities (of high order) have been anticipated and are considered in developing the mathematical model. The methodology is demonstrated through different problems of extension, shear, and of planar curved beams. Moreover, importance of the inclusion of large strains is clearly demonstrated, through the chosen applications.

The development of a general mathematical model and solution methodologies, to examine the behavior of thin structural elements such as beams, rings, and arches, subjected to large nonisothermal elastoviscoplastic deformations is presented. Thus, geometric as well as material type nonlinearities of higher order are present in the analysis. For this purpose a complete true abinito rate theory of kinematics and kinetics for thin bodies, without any restriction on the magnitude of the transformation is presented. A previously formulated elasto-thermo-viscoplastic material constitutive law is employed in the analysis. The methodology is demonstrated through three different straight and curved beams problems.

The paper is concerned with the development of constitutive relations for large nonisothermal elastic-viscoplastic deformations for metals. The kinematics of elastic-plastic deformation, valid for finite strains and rotations, is presented. The resulting elastic-plastic uncoupled equations for the deformation rate combined with use of the incremental elasticity law permits a precise and purely deductive development of elastic-viscoplastic theory. It is shown that a phenomenological thermodynamic theory in which the elastic deformation and the temperature are state variables, including few internal variables, can be utilized to construct elastic-viscoplastic constitutive equations, which are appropriate for metals. The limiting case of inviscid plasticity is examined.

The development of a general mathematical model and solutions of test problems to analyze large nonisothermal elasto-visco-plastic deformatisms of structures is discussed. Geometric and material type nonlinearities of higher order are present in the development of the mathematical model and in the developed solution methodology.

A flow diverter valve applicable to any fluid flow system requiring rapid bleed or bypass is disclosed. Examples of application of the flow diverter valve to a liquid rocket and a turbojet aircraft engine are given. Features of the valve include: (1) an independent fluid source is used to activate the flow diverter valve toward its closed position during its initial stage of travel; (2) the flow diverter port area and size is unlimited and the valve travel is unlimited; and (3) the valve housing is fabricated such that the valve can be a one step valve, a two step valve, or include as many steps as are found desirable.
