BackgroundMultiple Sclerosis (MS) is a common neurological disease among white populations of European origin. Frequencies among Latin Americans continue to be studied, however, epidemiologic, and clinical characterization studies lack from Central American and Caribbean countries. Ethnicity in these countries is uniformly similar with a prevalent Mestizo population.Methods and resultsData from January 2014 to December 2019 from Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Dominican Republic, and Aruba on demographic, clinical, MRI and phenotypic traits were determined in coordinated studies: ENHANCE, a population-based, retrospective, observational study on incidence and clinical characteristics, and from the subgroup with MS national registries (Aruba, Dominican Republic, Honduras, and Panama), data on prevalence, phenotypes and demographics. Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS), and therapeutic schemes were included. ENHANCE data from 758 patients disclosed 79.8% of Mestizo ethnicity; 72.4% female; median age at onset 31.0 years and 33.2 at diagnosis. The highest incidence rate was from Aruba, 2.3–3.5 × 100,000 inhabitants, and the lowest, 0.07–0.15 × 100,000, from Honduras. Crude prevalence rates per 100,000 inhabitants fluctuated from 27.3 (Aruba) to 1.0 (Honduras). Relapsing MS accounted for 87.4% of cases; EDSS

Drowsiness is a main factor for various costly defects, even fatal accidents in areas such as construction, transportation, industry and medicine, due to the lack of monitoring vigilance in the mentioned areas. The implementation of a drowsiness detection system can greatly help to reduce the defects and accident rates by alerting individuals when they enter a drowsy state. This research proposes an electroencephalography (EEG)-based approach for detecting drowsiness. EEG signals are passed through a preprocessing chain composed of artifact removal and segmentation to ensure accurate detection followed by different feature extraction methods to extract the different features related to drowsiness. This work explores the use of various machine learning algorithms such as Support Vector Machine (SVM), the K nearest neighbor (KNN), the Naive Bayes (NB), the Decision Tree (DT), and the Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) to analyze EEG signals sourced from the DROZY database, carefully labeled into two distinct states of alertness (awake and drowsy). Segmentation into 10 s intervals ensures precise detection, while a relevant feature selection layer enhances accuracy and generalizability. The proposed approach achieves high accuracy rates of 99.84% and 96.4% for intra (subject by subject) and inter (cross-subject) modes, respectively. SVM emerges as the most effective model for drowsiness detection in the intra mode, while MLP demonstrates superior accuracy in the inter mode. This research offers a promising avenue for implementing proactive drowsiness detection systems to enhance occupational safety across various industries.

Here, a study of NMOSD in Central America and the Caribbean with a multinational collaborative, multicentric and descriptive approach involving 25 institutions from 9 countries is presented. Demographics, clinical manifestations, expanded disability scale status (EDSS), brain and spinal cord MRI, serological anti-AQP4-IgG and anti-MOG-IgG antibodies, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) oligoclonal bands were included. A central serological repository utilized the cell-based assay. The specimens outside of this network employed diverse methodologies. Data were collected at the Gorgas Commemorative Institute of Health Studies (ICGES), Panama, and included 186 subjects, of which 84% were females (sex ratio of 5.6:1). Mestizos constituted 72% of the study group. The median age was 42.5 years (IQR: 32.0–52.0). Associated autoimmune diseases (8.1%) were myasthenia gravis, Sjögren’s syndrome and systemic lupus erythematosus. The most common manifestation was optic neuritis-transverse myelitis (42.5%). A relapsing course was described in 72.3% of cases. EDSS scores of 0–3.5 were reported in 57.2% of cases and higher than 7.0 in 14.5%. Positive anti-AQP4-IgG antibody occurred in 59.8% and anti-MOG-IgG antibody in 11.5% of individuals. Antibody testing was lacking for 13.4% of patients. The estimated crude prevalence of NMOSD from Panama and the Dominican Republic was 1.62/100,000 (incidence of 0.08–0.41) and 0.73/100,000 (incidence 0.02–0.14), respectively. This multinational study contributes additional insights and data on the understanding of NMOSD in this Latin American region.

Category: Midfoot/Forefoot; Bunion Introduction/Purpose: Recently, minimally invasive surgery for hallux valgus correction has regained popularity. The minimally invasive Chevron and Akin (MICA), has been proved to be as satisfactory for patients as conventional open techniques. However, due to its design, it is difficult to correct the coronal plane malalignment, which could lead to the recurrence of the deformity. Instead, a Bösch-type osteotomy allows multiplanar correction, and with an upgrade in its fixation we can create a stable third- generation percutaneous osteotomy. We report our first 100 patients results using the minimally invasive Bösch and Akin osteotomy (MIBA). Methods: This was a prospective case series of our first 100 patients (137 feet) undergoing MIBA procedure. Outcome measures included the Manchester-Oxford Foot Questionnaire (MOXFQ), the AOFAS Forefoot Score, and the visual analog scale (VAS) for pain assessment. There was also a significant improvement in all radiographic parameters (p < 0.05). Category: Lesser Toes; Hindfoot Introduction/Purpose: Distal metatarsal osteotomies for metatarsalgia are one of the most frequent procedures in foot and ankle surgery, however, sometimes their results are not so favorable, with sequelae such as floating toe or loss of toe grip. The open modified Weil osteotomy (OWO) is considered the first alternative in metatarsalgia cases for many surgeons, nevertheless, in recent years, minimally invasive surgery (MIS) has become an attractive alternative for the management of this pathology. To date, there is scarce literature that compares clinical and functional results between both techniques. The objective of this study is to compare the clinical and functional outcomes between OWO and minimally invasive distal metatarsal osteotomy (DMMO), with and without lesser toe procedures. Methods: We performed a retrospective review of 77 patients who underwent OWO or DMMO, with at least 12 month follow up. We excluded patients with incomplete data, previous forefoot surgery, and patients with neuromuscular or rheumatological diseases. Our main outcome was to evaluate the presence of floating toe. Our secondary outcomes were to evaluate toe grip strength (paper pullout test), functional scores (LEFS and AOFAS) and satisfaction. All patients were clinically evaluated by one foot and ankle surgeon who did not participate in any of the surgical procedures. Statistical analysis was performed using Student's t-test, Fisher's test, and Chi-square. Results: 77 patients (188 rays) were included. 120 rays received OWO, and 68 rays DMMO. 95% women, with a mean age of 57 years. The mean follow-up was 39.4 months. The floating toe incidence was 56.7% in the OWO group (67.3% when a DuVries procedure was added), which was significantly higher (p=0.001) than the 25% in the DMMO group (37.9% when P1 MIS osteotomy was added). When comparing lesser toe grip strength between both groups, the DMMO patients had significantly greater grip strength (p=001) Significant differences were obtained between both groups when comparing satisfaction (p=0.04), LEFS (p=0.001), and AOFAS scores (p=0.001), being better in the DMMO group. Conclusion: In our series, the DMMO procedure had significantly lower incidence of floating toe, greater toe grip strength, better functional outcomes and superior satisfaction scores than the OWO. When a bone procedure in the lesser toe is added (MIS osteotomy or DuVries) the floating toe incidence is increased, but not with statistical significance.

Category: Basic Sciences/Biologics; Bunion Introduction/Purpose: Hallux valgus minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is becoming more common due to its good clinical and functional results. Third-generation MIS surgery uses screw fixation that is dependent on the bone density of the first metatarsal head (FMH) for optimal screw purchase. There is no information regarding areas of higher bone density (BMD) in the FMH that suggest a stronger area of fixation, nor has it been described whether it varies between different age groups or with gender. The objective of this study is to determine the BMD within four quadrants of the FMH. This finding could lead to identifying the ideal trajectory for screw placement. In addition, we evaluate BMD variation by age and gender. Methods: Transversal study. From our CT scan database, we obtained 40 patients with no previous history of first metatarsal fractures, pre existing hardware, foot surgery or osteoporosis. We divided the patients into 4 groups, each group containing 5 male and 5 female patients: group 1: 60 years. The main outcome is to evaluate the association between BMD in each FMH quadrant. Secondary outcomes are to identify any differences in BMD between gender and age groups. According to what has been previously discussed in the literature, two evaluators measured the Hounsfield units (HU) of each quadrant on a coronal cut located 10 mm proximal to the metatarsophalangeal joint using the Merge PACS system. Measures were averaged. Statistical analysis was performed by measuring normality with the Shapiro-Wilks test, and the ANOVA, Student's t-test, and Mann-Whitney U test. Results: The dorsolateral (DL) quadrant had the highest BMD (353.9hu) of all quadrants, followed by the lateral plantar (LP: 302.4hu), medial plantar (MP: 264.1hu), and dorsomedial (DM: 247.6hu) (p=0.001).When comparing the groups by age, DL (p=0.01) and LP (p=0.01) quadrants had significantly greater BMD in groups 1 and 2 (< 45 years) than groups 3 and 4 (> 45 years).When comparing BMD by gender, differences were only obtained in the group 4, in which mens had greater BMD in the DM (p=0.03), DL (p=0.02), and LP (p=0.01) quadrants.An significant inverse association between age and BMD was obtained for the DL (P=0.004) and MP (P=0.03) quadrants. Conclusion: There are differences in BMD between the quadrants of the first metatarsal head, with the greatest BMD being in the dorsolateral region at any age. BMD decreased proportionally with increasing age in the DL and MP quadrants. At the same age, there are no significant differences between gender, except in patients >60 years, where women have lower BMD in almost all quadrants.

Deep Learning techniques have been successfully applied to solve many Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications problems. However, owing to topologies with many hidden layers, Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) have high computational complexity, which makes their deployment difficult in contexts highly constrained by requirements such as performance, real-time processing, or energy efficiency. Numerous hardware/software optimization techniques using GPUs, ASICs, and reconfigurable computing (i.e, FPGAs), have been proposed in the literature. With FPGAs, very specialized architectures have been developed to provide an optimal balance between high-speed and low power. However, when targeting edge computing, user requirements and hardware constraints must be efficiently met. Therefore, in this work, we only focus on reconfigurable embedded systems based on the Xilinx ZYNQ SoC and popular DNNs that can be implemented on Embedded Edge improving performance per watt while maintaining accuracy. In this context, we propose an automated framework for the implementation of hardware-accelerated DNN architectures. This framework provides an end-to-end solution that facilitates the efficient deployment of topologies on FPGAs by combining custom hardware scalability with optimization strategies. Cutting-edge comparisons and experimental results demonstrate that the architectures developed by our framework offer the best compromise between performance, energy consumption, and system costs. For instance, the low power (0.266W) DNN topologies generated for the MNIST database achieved a high throughput of 3,626 FPS.

Abstract Background Malaria remains an important public health problem in Peru where incidence has been increasing since 2011. Of over 55,000 cases reported in 2017, Plasmodium vivax was the predominant species (76%), with P. falciparum responsible for the remaining 24%. Nyssorhynchus darlingi (previously Anopheles darlingi) is the main vector in Amazonian Peru, where hyperendemic Plasmodium transmission pockets have been found. Mazán district has pronounced spatial heterogeneity of P. vivax malaria. However, little is known about behavior, ecology or seasonal dynamics of Ny. darlingi in Mazán. This study aimed to gather baseline information about bionomics of malaria vectors and transmission risk factors in a hyperendemic malaria area of Amazonian Peru. Methods To assess vector biology metrics, five surveys (two in the dry and three in the rainy season), including collection of sociodemographic information, were conducted in four communities in 2016–2017 on the Napo (Urco Miraño, URC; Salvador, SAL) and Mazán Rivers (Visto Bueno, VIB; Libertad, LIB). Human-biting rate (HBR), entomological inoculation rate (EIR) and human blood index (HBI) were measured to test the hypothesis of differences in entomological indices of Ny. darlingi between watersheds. A generalized linear mixed effect model (GLMM) was constructed to model the relationship between household risk factors and the EIR. Results Nyssorhynchus darlingi comprised 95% of 7117 Anophelinae collected and its abundance was significantly higher along the Mazán River. The highest EIRs (3.03–4.54) were detected in March and June in URC, LIB and VIB, and significantly more Ny. darlingi were infected outdoors than indoors. Multivariate analysis indicated that the EIR was >12 times higher in URC compared with SAL. The HBI ranged from 0.42–0.75; humans were the most common blood source, followed by Galliformes and cows. There were dramatic differences in peak biting time and malaria incidence with similar bednet coverage in the villages. Conclusions Nyssorhynchus darlingi is the predominant contributor to malaria transmission in the Mazán District, Peru. Malaria risk in these villages is higher in the peridomestic area, with pronounced heterogeneities between and within villages on the Mazán and the Napo Rivers. Spatiotemporal identification and quantification of the prevailing malaria transmission would provide new evidence to orient specific control measures for vulnerable or at high risk populations.

The distribution range of Jaguar (Panthera onca) is being reduced due to multi-scale habitat conversion, intensive hunting, illegal trafficking, habitat fragmentation, and the construction of highways and other infrastructure. Because of the decrease in population, this species’ listing has changed from vulnerable to a threatened category. Due to the ecological importance of this species, organizations like Red Colombiana de Seguimiento de Fauna Atropellada have proposed the establishment of wildlife corridors. But little is known as to recognize the driving forces in these habitat changes and where these corridors should be established. To address this lack of information, we determined the spatial extent to which the current distribution and access to P. onca habitat is being driven by deforestation, armed conflict, agriculture expansion, urbanization and the construction of highways in the Bajo Magdalena area of Colombia. We then identified potential areas for proposing conservation corridors. To do this, we used available geospatial information on P. onca distribution in the Corporación Autónoma Regional areas in the municipalities of Puerto Salgar, Caparrapí and Guaduas, as well as transportation network, administrative unit, and deforestation data from 2010 to 2018. We also calculated habitat distances to population centers and the distribution of P. onca relative to roads. Our findings suggest that urban population and highways affect 83 % of the total area of its distribution; deforestation increased by 47.9 km2 in the 105.24 km2 study area with 5.6 km2 alone left as P. onca habitat. We concluded that conservation initiatives must be implemented inside P. onca’s distributional range and buffer zones. Urbanization and the construction of highways were highly influential variables associated with the loss of P. onca habitat. Further, we propose that precautions along the principal road that connects Puerto Salgar and Guaduas should be taken into consideration to maintain the genetic flow and movement of the P. onca population as it affects 87 km of this proposed corridor.

Energy consumption is crucial in high-performance computing (HPC), especially to enable the next exascale generation. Hence, modern systems implement various hardware and software features for power management. Nonetheless, due to numerous different implementations, we can always push the limits of software to achieve the most efficient use of our hardware. To be energy efficient, the software relies on dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS), as well as dynamic power management (DPM). Yet, none have privileged information on the hardware architecture and application behavior, which may lead to energy-inefficient software operation. This study proposes analytical modeling for architecture and application behavior that can be used to estimate energy-optimal software configurations and provide knowledgeable hints to improve DVFS and DPM techniques for single-node HPC applications. Additionally, model parameters, such as the level of parallelism and dynamic power, provide insights into how the modeled application consumes energy, which can be helpful for energy-efficient software development and operation. This novel analytical model takes the number of active cores, the operating frequencies, and the input size as inputs to provide energy consumption estimation. We present the modeling of 13 parallel applications employed to determine energy-optimal configurations for several different input sizes. The results show that up to 70% of energy could be saved in the best scenario compared to the default Linux choice and 14% on average. We also compare the proposed model with standard machine-learning modeling concerning training overhead and accuracy. The results show that our approach generates about 10 times less energy overhead for the same level of accuracy.

This work proposes dedicated hardware for an intelligent control system on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). The intelligent system is represented as Takagi–Sugeno Fuzzy-PI controller. The implementation uses a fully parallel strategy associated with a hybrid bit format scheme (fixed-point and floating-point). Two hardware designs are proposed; the first one uses a single clock cycle processing architecture, and the other uses a pipeline scheme. The bit accuracy was tested by simulation with a nonlinear control system of a robotic manipulator. The area, throughput, and dynamic power consumption of the implemented hardware are used to validate and compare the results of this proposal. The results achieved allow the use of the proposed hardware in applications with high-throughput, low-power and ultra-low-latency requirements such as teleoperation of robot manipulators, tactile internet, or industry 4.0 automation, among others.

Fragmento Uno de los programas de la Asociación Colombiana de Diabetes, Seccional del Atlántico, es el estudio de los estados prediabéticos y las llamadas diabetes latentes o subclínicas. Como la prueba de Conn y Fajans (1 y 2) resulta de difícil realización y elevado costo para la investigación en grandes grupos humanos, acudimos a la llamada Prueba de la Glicosuria-Pendnisona, haciendo algunas variaciones de adaptación al Test propuesto por Joplin y colaboradores en 1961. Para nuestra investigación escogimos 15 individuos de un total de 525 vinculados a un personal militar de la Base Naval de Barranquilla, 14 hombres y una mujer, 13 de ellos familiares cercanos de diabéticos y 2 aceptados en la prueba, uno por sobrepeso considerable y el otro por síntomas clínicos (polidipsia, polifagia y aumento progresivo de peso) que le hicieron solicitar expresamente su inclusión en el grupo.

The purpose of this work is to estimate the costs associated with managing patients with MS in Panama and evaluating the impact of the disease on their health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Multicentric observational, retrospective, cross-sectional study. The costs were estimated from societal and patient perspectives and expressed in USD, 2015. The focus of the study is based on prevalence and on a "bottom-up" approach. To estimate the total cost per patient, annual reported use for each resource was multiplied by its unit cost. To evaluate HRQoL, patients completed the EQ-5D-3L questionnaire. 108 patients took part in the study. 82.41% were women with 44.78 (SD: 12.27) years. 61.11% presented mild (EDSS = 0-3.5), 25.93% moderate (EDSS = 3.5-6) and 12.96%, severe disability (EDSS≥6.5). The mean annual cost from the patient's perspective was estimated at 777.99 USD (SD: 1,741.45) per patient. The mean cost from a societal perspective was estimated at 23,803.21 USD (SD: 13,331.83) per patient. Disease-modifying therapies (DMT) accounted for the main component of the cost. A deterioration in HRQoL was observed as the disease advances and as disability increases, with mobility and usual activities being the areas most affected by its progression. From both perspective, the cost per MS patient in Panama is high. In addition to the high economic impact, MS also exerts a negative impact on patient HRQoL, which increases as the disease advances.

The acquisition is the most time-consuming step performed by a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver. The objective is to detect which satellites are transmitting and what are the phase and Doppler frequency shift of the signal. It is the step with the highest computational complexity, especially for signals subjected to large Doppler shifts. Improving acquisition performance has a large impact on the overall performance of the GNSS reception. In this paper, we present a two-step Global Positioning System (GPS) acquisition algorithm whose first step performs an incremental correlation to find a coarse pair of phase and frequency and the second step, triggered by the variance of the largest correlation values, refines the first step. The proposed strategy, based on the conventional time-domain serial algorithm, reduces the average execution time of the acquisition process to about 1/5 of the conventional acquisition while keeping the same modest logic hardware requirements and slightly better success and false-positive rates. Additionally, the new method reduces memory usage by a factor that is proportional to the signal’s sampling frequency. All these advantages over conventional acquisition contribute together to significantly improve the overall performance and cost of GPS receivers.

The objective of this research was to identify environmental risk factors for cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) in Colombia and map high-risk municipalities. The study area was the Colombian Andean region, comprising 715 rural and urban municipalities. We used 10 years of CL surveillance: 2000-2009. We used spatial-temporal analysis - conditional autoregressive Poisson random effects modelling - in a Bayesian framework to model the dependence of municipality-level incidence on land use, climate, elevation and population density. Bivariable spatial analysis identified rainforests, forests and secondary vegetation, temperature, and annual precipitation as positively associated with CL incidence. By contrast, livestock agroecosystems and temperature seasonality were negatively associated. Multivariable analysis identified land use - rainforests and agro-livestock - and climate - temperature, rainfall and temperature seasonality - as best predictors of CL. We conclude that climate and land use can be used to identify areas at high risk of CL and that this approach is potentially applicable elsewhere in Latin America.

El desarrollo de nuevas tecnologías en resonancia magnética ha favorecido el uso de secuencias que mejoran significativamente la resolución espacial del método, obteniendo imágenes de cortes finos que permiten análisis volumétrico. Se presenta la experiencia en Clínica Vespucio en un protocolo rutinario de estudio de rodilla, con evaluación de 45 pacientes consecutivos a los que se les realizó secuencia tradicional de densidad protónica con saturación grasa (DPFS) de corte grueso (3 mm) y secuencia DPFS volumétrica de corte fino (1,2 mm). En la mayoría de los casos es posible realizar mejor caracterización anatómica de las lesiones, principalmente meniscales y condrales, con un mínimo aumento en el tiempo de estudio.The development of new MRI technologies has favoured the use of sequences that significantly improve the spatial resolution of this imaging method, thus yielding thin-section images that allow volumetric analysis. We present our experience at Clínica Vespucio related to a routine knee MRI protocol, performed on 45 patients who underwent conventional proton density-weighted spin-echo sequence (PDFS) 3-mm section thickness along with proton density-weighted sequence of 1.2- mm thin-section, both with fat suppression technique. In most cases, the thin-section PDFS allows a better anatomical characterization of lesions, particularly meniscal and condral injuries, with a minimum increase in image acquisition time.

El presente trabajo busca explorar las ideas de folclore, raza y racismo en el pensamientointelectual de Delia Zapata Olivella. Se espera, mediante una interpretación profundade su trabajo, mostrar que las construcciones de sentido de la autora proponen una descripciónsocial y cultural del orden racial en Colombia. Para tal fin se reflexionará sobrela configuración del campo político – intelectual afrocolombiano, para posteriormenteadelantar algunas interpretaciones sobre la manera como Delia Zapata concibió, en sustrabajos, el folclore, la raza y el racismo.

Using maps of vegetation cover, aerial photographs and field data, we evaluated the fragmentation status of tropical dry forest at the high basin of river Cauca in southwestern Colombia. The study area had 608992 ha, ranging from northern Cauca to central Risaralda. Forest cover represented 1,76% of the analyzed area, scattered in about 1600 fragments with a mean patch area of 6,03 ha. 75% of the forest fragments were separated by a distance of 500 m or more from its nearest neighbour. Only nine fragments had an extension over 100 ha, most of them with dendritic shapes and up to 17 core areas. This configuration would make them behave more like separate small patches than a continuous large patch. In this landscape, edge effect is expected to greatly influence species composition of dry forest fragments. Evaluation of regional species richness should account for the contribution of other arboreal landscape elements. Bamboo forests and riparian forests are especially important since they increase landscape connectivity. In this context, any conservation or restoration initiative should involve management of the landscape matrix, sugar cane and pastures, in order to make them less resistant to the movement or organisms between landscape elements.

RESUMO: Em diversas partes da América Latina, a perda e diminuição do habitat natural de animais silvestres ocorre em função do aumento das atividades agropecuárias. Nos últimos anos o número de mortes de animais de criação por depredação tem aumentado, bem como a consequente retaliação aos predadores. Como resultado destas ações, ocorre à extinção ou redução das populações destes predadores de topo, provocando perdas ecológicas. Esse estudo teve como objetivo apontar medidas preventivas e mitigatórias da depredação de ovinos por onça-parda (Puma concolor). Através da análise de dois estudos de casos de depredação no Centro-Oeste brasileiro e na região dos Andes Colombianos, levantamos soluções alternativas sustentáveis para que profissionais e criadores possam se prevenir desta ameaça ao rebanho ovino. Um estudo de caso foi realizado em fazenda no município de Alto Paraguai, Mato Grosso. Entre os anos 2005 e 2014 houve visitas na propriedade para diagnóstico de doenças e realizou-se estudo comparativo da quantidade de mortes por doenças com as mortes por depredação. No ano de 2010 ocorreu um ataque depredatório que resultou em morte de seis ovinos. Em 2014, realizou-se um estudo na região central do Departamento del Valle del Cauca, há 2814m de altitude nos Andes colombianos, para diagnosticar a depredação de gado na região e implementar medidas para prevenir sua ocorrência e avaliar sua eficácia. No total, foram implementadas medidas anti-depredação sobre oito propriedades, e entre elas, um curral com cerca elétrica para ovelhas foi implementada em uma fazenda no município de Tuluá. Os resultados mostram que as perdas econômicas por depredação são graves nas duas regiões estudadas e se equiparam a perdas por doenças no estudo de caso em Mato Grosso, Brasil. Portanto recomenda-se a combinação entre o manejo sanitário, métodos de prevenção e, se necessário, mitigação de ataques depredatório. Além disso, legisladores devem se associar a pesquisadores para traçar estratégias efetivas para esse sério problema na América Latina.

El desarrollo de nuevas tecnologías en resonancia magnética ha favorecido el uso de secuencias que mejoran significativamente la resolución espacial del método, obteniendo imágenes de cortes finos que permiten análisis volumétrico. Se presenta la experiencia en Clínica Vespucio en un protocolo rutinario de estudio de rodilla, con evaluación de 45 pacientes consecutivos a los que se les realizó secuencia tradicional de densidad protónica con saturación grasa (DPFS) de corte grueso (3 mm) y secuencia DPFS volumétrica de corte fino (1,2 mm). En la mayoría de los casos es posible realizar mejor caracterización anatómica de las lesiones, principalmente meniscales y condrales, con un mínimo aumento en el tiempo de estudio.
