This paper presents an analysis to determine the suitable areas for the implementation of solar-wind projects in Santa Marta, Colombia. For this, an approach that integrates the decision-making tool of the Analytical Hierarchical Process (AHP) with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) was used. To identify the selection criteria, the existing literature and the renewable resources available in the study area were considered. Seven sub-criteria were identified (solar irradiation, wind speed, protected areas, armed conflict, indigenous reservations, populated zones and roads), which were weighted with the AHP by 15 experts with experience in projects with renewable energies. After performing a consistency analysis, it was found that 5 experts were consistent, while another 5 were discarded for being highly inconsistent. A consistency correction method was implemented for the remaining 5 experts, in order to have 10 experts for the weighting process. Each sub-criterion represents a map of the study area, which were superimposed in a GIS environment to implement the weighting obtained with the experts. A global map for the implementation of renewable energy projects, considering environmental, social and local infrastructure criteria was obtained. In this paper, a technical-economic-environmental analysis was carried out to establish the feasibility of implementing different types of hybrid energy systems. Four hybrid systems (solar-wind) were designed: with battery, with gas generator, grid-connected and with a diesel generator. These systems were analyzed using the HOMER software, which allows the calculation of pollutant gas emissions and simulates and optimizes energy consumption based on energy demand and energy resources. For the financial analysis, the net present value (NPV), the internal rate of return (IRR) and the payback period (PBP) were used, which were calculated using Microsoft Excel. The four systems were designed for the energy demand of the luminaires of the academic building of the Universidad del Magdalena. This paper presents the analysis of energy management and financial planning that is carried out in the design and implementation of photovoltaic systems in urban areas of the city of Barranquilla, Colombia. A questionnaire with a Likert scale and 36 items was designed, which was answered by subjects with managerial functions of the 16 companies dedicated to the implementation of photovoltaic (PV) projects in Barranquilla. The instrument was validated by expert judgment with a reliability of 0.84 with Cronbach's Alpha. For the analysis of results, techniques of central tendency and variability were used. The results show that energy management in the implementation of PV projects is moderate, indicating that there is no predominant presence of indicators of improvement and energy performance in these projects. In this paper, a set of non-parametric identification techniques are used in order to obtain second order models plus dead time for an underdamped system. Initially, non-parametric techniques were used to identify the system from the temperature data of a coal-heated oven. In this case, the identification techniques proposed by Stark, Jahanmiri - Fallahi and Ogata were used, which require obtaining two or three points of the step response for the system under study. In addition, the Matlab PID Tuner app was used to identify the underdamped system and compare the results with the other methods. The results show that the PID Tuner and the method proposed by Ogata are the ones that best represent the dynamics of the underdamped system, taking into account the values for the Integral Absolute Error (IAE) and the correlation coefficient. With the Stark method an IAE of 181.56 was obtained, while with the PID Tuner the best performance was achieved with an IAE of 21.59. In terms of the results obtained with the cross correlation, the best performance was achieved with the PID tuner and the Stark method.

This paper presents a detailed description of the data obtained as a result of the computational simulations and experimental tests of an MPPT controller based on an ADALINE artificial neural network with FIR architecture, trained with the RTRL and LMS algorithms that were used as mechanisms of control in an off-grid photovoltaic system. In addition to the data obtained with the neural control method, the data for the MPPT controller based on the traditional Perturb and Observe (P&O) algorithm are presented. The simulations were performed in MATLAB/Simulink software without using the Neural Network Toolbox for controller training. The experimental tests were performed in an open space without shaded areas, exposing the neurocontroller to varying environmental conditions. Additionally, the scripts developed in MATLAB for the neural training algorithms used in the simulations are presented. These computational simulations were structured in five test cases to represent the behavior of each controller under varying environmental conditions. The codes developed in C are part of the implementation of the MPPT neurocontroller in the PIC18F2550, from which the experimental data were obtained. The data and codes presented in this research are available in the Mendeley Data repository, which allows evaluating the performance and optimizing the training algorithms with the purpose of improving the control methods applied to photovoltaic systems.

This article presents the data of a PV system using fuzzy logic and the perturb and observe (P&O) algorithm, under sudden changes in the solar irradiance and the operating temperature of a PV module. The mathematical modeling of the PV module, the dc-dc converter and the fuzzy and P&O controllers were discussed in our previous work entitled "Fuzzy logic based MPPT controller for a PV System" (Algarin et al., 2017) [1] . Data are presented for six cases with different operating conditions: in the first case the two controllers were evaluated for standard test conditions with constant solar irradiance of 1000 W/m2 and constant temperature of 25 °C. In the remaining five cases sudden increases and decreases were made in the operating conditions of the PV module. Finally, the theoretical data of the PV system are presented, which can be used as a reference to analyze the data obtained with the two controllers in the six cases. Data are provided in Supplementary material in Tables 1–7 .

espanolSe analizan los resultados de la gestion administrativa en las instituciones educativas rurales del distrito de Santa Marta, Colombia, considerando dimensiones como enfoque administrativo, nivel de gestion, usos de investigacion de operaciones en educacion y toma de decision. Es una investigacion descriptiva, de campo y transversal, con poblacion de 25 instituciones rurales. El instrumento fue un cuestionario tipo escala de Likert con 48 items, validado mediante juicio experto y confiabilidad de 0.87 Alfa de Cronbach. La estadistica fue descriptiva, y se construyo un baremo de 5 categorias. Los resultados indican que no hay enfoque administrativo predominante en las instituciones educativas de la zona rural y que existe moderada presencia en el uso de tecnicas de investigacion operacional en la gestion administrativa de los colegios. Ademas, 72% de los directores no utilizan soportes para decidir, 48% no usa referentes teoricos, aunque existen condiciones para adelantar estudios de investigacion operacional en cada institucion. EnglishThe results of a study on the administrative management in rural educational institutions in the district of Santa Marta, Colombia, considering dimensions such as administrative approach, management level, uses of operations research in education and decision making are presented. The study is of descriptive type ad classified as a field and cross-sectional investigation, with a population of 25 rural institutions. The instrument used to gather the data was a Likert scale questionnaire with 48 items, validated by expert judgment and reliability of 0.87 using the Cronbach's Alpha. The statistic was descriptive and a scale of 5 categories was constructed. The results indicate that there is no predominant administrative approach in the educational institutions of the rural area and that there is a moderate presence in the use of operational research techniques applied to the administrative management of the institutions. Also, 72% of the school directors do not use supports for decision making, 48 % does not use theoretical references, although there are appropriate conditions to carry out operational research studies in each institution.

espanolEste articulo presenta el procedimiento para la seleccion de un conjunto de criterios para tener en cuenta en proyectos de planificacion energetica para las zonas rurales de Colombia utilizando fuentes renovables de energia. La implementacion de programas de electrificacion en las zonas rurales colombianas se enfrenta a diversos obstaculos, entre los que se destaca la inadecuada seleccion de criterios para valorar la pertinencia de los proyectos. A partir de una revision bibliografica se identificaron 33 criterios que fueron sometidos al juicio de expertos con un cuestionario basado en la escala de Likert. Para la seleccion se utilizo como referente la media aritmetica y el nivel de significancia. Se seleccionaron 20 subcriterios agrupados en 5 criterios: tecnicos, economicos, sociales, ambientales y riesgo; los cuales permiten una evaluacion integral de proyectos de planificacion energetica. EnglishThis paper presents the process of selecting a set of criteria for use in energy planning processes using renewable energy sources in rural areas of Colombia. The implementation of renewable energies in the electrification programs of rural areas in Colombia has several obstacles, among which the inadequate selection of criteria to assess the relevance of projects is highlighted. From a bibliographic review, 33 criteria were identified and submitted to expert judgment with a questionnaire based on the Likert scale. For the selection process, the arithmetic mean and the level of significance were used as reference. After processing the results, 20 subcriteria were selected and grouped into five criteria: technical, economic, social, environmental and risk; which allow a comprehensive evaluation of energy planning projects.

This paper presents the implementation of a fuzzy controller on the Arduino Mega board, for tracking the maximum power point of a photovoltaic (PV) module; using low cost materials. A dc-dc converter that incorporates a driver circuit to control the turning on and offof the Mosfet transistor was designed. The controller was evaluated in a PV system consisting of a 65 W PV module and a 12 V/55Ah battery. The results demonstrate the superiority of the fuzzy controller compared to the traditional P & O algorithm, in terms of efficiency and oscillations around the operating point. Este documento presenta la implementación de un controlador difuso en la placa Arduino Mega, para rastrear el punto de máxima potencia de un módulo fotovoltaico (PV); Utilizando materiales de bajo coste. Se diseñó un convertidor dc-dc que incorpora un circuito controlador para controlar el encendido y apagado del transistor Mosfet. El controlador se evaluó en un sistema fotovoltaico que consta de un módulo fotovoltaico de 65 W y una batería de 12 V / 55Ah. Los resultados demuestran la superioridad del controlador difuso en comparación con el algoritmo P & O tradicional, en términos de eficiencia y oscilaciones alrededor del punto de operación.

The inclusion of photovoltaic energy in the Colombian energy matrix has had several difficulties due to the lack of energy policies and regulations in renewable energy projects. The lack of government support with subsidies that extend the coverage of PV energy projects in residential areas has made the collection of funds more challenging. This paper presents a techno-economic analysis for the implementation of grid-connected photovoltaic projects on the roofs of residential areas, under the net metering policy framework. For the profitability analysis, the discounted cash flow (DCF) method was used. The revenues were obtained from the forecasts of the electrical power production of the PV system, based on the characteristics of the Colombian Caribbean Region. For this purpose, the meteorological data (2013-2017) of this region were used as an input for the calculation of the economic benefits that can be achieved with the implementation of PV systems. Based on the technical sizing and economic assumptions, it was proved that the DCF method allows to accurately determine the optimal debt ratio. This This paper presents the design and modeling of a P&O controller for tracking the maximum power point of a wind turbine with a permanent magnet synchronous generator. For the modeling of the wind turbine, the Betz equations were used, with which it is possible to determine the efficiency of the wind turbine to convert the kinetic energy into electrical energy using the power coefficient. For the P&O controller, wind speed and angular velocity were used as inputs. For the output, the duty cycle of a Buck converter was used, which functions as an interface between the controller and the load. The wind turbine and the controller were modeled using Matlab-Simulink. The results obtained demonstrate the efficiency of the designed controller, which allows the power coefficient to remain at its maximum value for different test conditions.

This paper presents the data of multimodal functions that emulate the performance of an array of five photovoltaic modules under partial shading conditions. These functions were obtained through mathematical modeling and represent the P–V curves of a photovoltaic module with several local maximums and a global maximum. In addition, data from a feedforward neural network are shown, which represent an approximation of the multimodal functions that were obtained with mathematical modeling. The modeling of multimodal functions, the architecture of the neural network and the use of the data were discussed in our previous work entitled “Search for Global Maxima in Multimodal Functions by Applying Numerical Optimization Algorithms: A Comparison Between Golden Section and Simulated Annealing” [1]. Data were obtained through simulations in a C code, which were exported to DAT files and subsequently organized into four Excel tables. Each table shows the voltage and power data for the five modules of the photovoltaic array, for multimodal functions and for the approximation of the multimodal functions implemented by the artificial neural network. In this way, a dataset that can be used to evaluate the performance of optimization algorithms and system identification techniques applied in multimodal functions was obtained. The implementation of a printed circuit board (PCB) drilling machine using recyclable materials and computer-aided control is presented. A mechanical system using a DC motor for movement on the X and Y axes, and a transmission mechanism by belts, pulleys, and a worm screw was made. For the Z axis, a mechanism based on a worm screw, nuts, and a stepper motor was implemented. The main board has two microcontrollers communicating in a master-slave configuration via a serial protocol. A real-time operating system (OSA) was implemented to optimize the data flow to the computer using the USB protocol, for communication with the slave microcontroller, positioning the Cartesian axes, and control the motors. The slave is responsible for monitoring the status of the encoders and limit switches, as well as the information delivery to the master. A Matlab-based user interface was developed to determine the coordinates of the holes to be drilled by processing a jpg image. This also allows the user to control the DC motors using PWM signals via configurable parameters of PID controllers. The end result is a drilling machine which able to operate both manually and via a computer, for drilling PCBs of a maximum size of 24 &times, 40 cm.

This paper presents the design of a fuzzy controller for maximum power point tracking of an isolated photovoltaic system. The error between the measured voltage and that at maximum power point of the photovoltaic panel is used as single input for the controller. A simulation model was implemented in Matlab/Simulink and consists of a buck converter, a H bridge inverter with LCL filter, the proposed fuzzy controller, and a 300 W load at 120 VRMS and 60 Hz. The performance of the proposed system was compared with one using the Perturb and Observe (P&O) algorithm in the control stage. For both systems the performance was measured in terms of power generated and settling time and it is observed a superior performance with the fuzzy controller, with a decrease in the response time of 95%, and an increase in the extracted power of 2.61%.

This paper presents the implementation of a cost-effective didactic prototype, which was designed as a tool for theoretical and practical learning in the biomedical instrumentation area for engineering students. The prototype provides integrated hardware and software components that allow online acquisition, processing, and visualization of electrocardiographic (ECG), electroencephalographic (EEG), electromyographic (EMG), and electrooculographic (EOG) signals, as well as measurements of bio-impedance from the skin. A control system using an Arduino Uno board and the PIC16F877A and PIC18F2550 microcontrollers was implemented. This control system allows selecting the type of module; the lead to be used in the ECG module; the input channel for the EEG, EMG, and EOG modules; and controlling the signal generator for the bioimpedance module. In addition, a graphical interface was developed in LabVIEW, in which all the acquired biomedical signals can be visualized in real time. It is highlighted as a novelty the modular implementation of the prototype, the incorporation of five modules in a single device and the graphical user-friendly interface. The final result is a low-cost device capable of processing and visualizing bioelectric signals through an interface in LabVIEW, which also allows the user to interact with each of the stages.

This work presents the design, modeling, and implementation of a neural network inverse model controller for tracking the maximum power point of a photovoltaic (PV) module. A nonlinear autoregressive network with exogenous inputs (NARX) was implemented in a serial-parallel architecture. The PV module mathematical modeling was developed, a buck converter was designed to operate in the continuous conduction mode with a switching frequency of 20 KHz, and the dynamic neural controller was designed using the Neural Network Toolbox from Matlab/Simulink (MathWorks, Natick, MA, USA), and it was implemented on an open-hardware Arduino Mega board. To obtain the reference signals for the NARX and determine the 65 W PV module behavior, a system made of a 0.8 W PV cell, a temperature sensor, a voltage sensor and a static neural network, was used. To evaluate performance a comparison with the P&O traditional algorithm was done in terms of response time and oscillations around the operating point. Simulation results demonstrated the superiority of neural controller over the P&O. Implementation results showed that approximately the same power is obtained with both controllers, but the P&O controller presents oscillations between 7 W and 10 W, in contrast to the inverse controller, which had oscillations between 1 W and 2 W.

This paper presents the design and construction of a robotic arm that plays chess against a human opponent, based on an artificial vision system. The mechanical design was an adaptation of the robotic arm proposed by the rapid prototyping laboratory FabLab RUC (Fabrication Laboratory of the University of Roskilde). Using the software Solidworks, a gripper with 4 joints was designed. An artificial vision system was developed for detecting the corners of the squares on a chessboard and performing image segmentation. Then, an image recognition model was trained using convolutional neural networks to detect the movements of pieces on the board. An image-based visual servoing system was designed using the Kanade&ndash, Lucas&ndash, Tomasi method, in order to locate the manipulator. Additionally, an Arduino development board was programmed to control and receive information from the robotic arm using Gcode commands. Results show that with the Stockfish chess game engine, the system is able to make game decisions and manipulate the pieces on the board. In this way, it was possible to implement a didactic robotic arm as a relevant application in data processing and decision-making for programmable automatons.

Surface electromyography (sEMG) applied to the sports training area makes possible the observation of fatigue as well as the generation of muscular strength, through the study of changes in signal characteristics, such as peak-to-peak amplitude, mean frequency and median, among others. In this sense, this work presents the design of a portable prototype for the acquisition and processing of electromyographic (EMG) signals aimed at the detection of muscle fatigue in athletes. Using two Bluetooth Bee modules, a wireless communication was performed in order to send the muscular electrical activity of the skin surface to a user interface developed in LabVIEW. A group of players from the Volleyball team of the Universidad del Magdalena, performed a series of exercise routines with dynamic contractions and as they experienced fatigue, samples were taken of the contractions made. The tests were performed on the vastus lateralis and rectus femoris muscles. The analysis of fatigue under dynamic conditions of the two parameters studied, in frequency and time, showed that it is more pertinent to estimate fatigue indices in the frequency domain.

En esta investigación se presenta el prototipo de un sistema SCADA que aprovecha las potentes características de LabVIEW y la confiabilidad del protocolo ZigBee en la comunicación inalámbrica para realizar un control eficiente y supervisión remota de los procesos de Coagulación y Floculación de una Planta de Tratamiento de Agua Potable (PTAP). Se utilizó la metodología de descomposición del trabajo en fases (WBS) por su flexibilidad y facilidad para detallar en forma jerarquizada el trabajo a realizar. De esta forma se realizó una investigación exploratoria con diseño experimental que permitió hacer una integración exitosa entre hardware y software. Los resultados demostraron la efectividad del sistema obteniéndose una perfecta sincronización entre las unidades remotas y el programa principal, una eficiente comunicación inalámbrica con los módulos ZigBee con tiempos de retardos imperceptibles y con alta inmunidad al ruido. Se logró estructurar un programa principal robusto, con una interfaz sencilla y amigable con baja demanda de recursos de cómputo para las tareas de control y visualización de los datos de temperatura y pH.

El trabajo presenta la modelación del comportamiento energético y la determinación de los parámetros del circuito equivalente de un panel fotovoltaico con el empleo de técnicas de inteligencia artificial. Para tal efecto, se desarrolló en Matlab un algoritmo genético que permite obtener los parámetros físicos no brindados por los fabricantes para la implementación de funciones matemáticas que se homologuen al comportamiento dinámico de un panel solar. El algoritmo desarrollado en Matlab permite determinar, además, la eficiencia del algoritmo seguidor del punto de máxima potencia del inversor, el cual es un parámetro de no simple obtención o no determinado en condiciones de campo. Finalmente, el algoritmo se probó satisfactoriamente en un panel solar monocristalino de 50W obteniendo adecuados resultados en comparación con el modelo experimental para diferentes niveles de irradiación solar. Los resultados demuestran que el proceso desarrollado constituye una herramienta que puede ser aplicada a paneles fotovoltaicos en condiciones de campo. The paper presents the modeling of the energy behavior and determination of equivalent circuit parameters for a photovoltaic panel using artificial intelligence techniques. For this purpose, it was performed a genetic algorithm in Matlab, which calculates the physical parameters not provided by manufacturers to implement mathematical functions that approve the dynamic behavior of a solar panel. In addition, the algorithm can determine the efficiency of the maximum power point tracking algorithm of the inverter, which is a parameter of not simple obtaining or not determined under field conditions. Finally, the algorithm was successfully tested in a monocrystalline solar 50W panel with excellent results, compared to the experimental model for different levels of solar irradiation. The results demonstrate that the developed process is a tool that can be applied to photovoltaic panels under field conditions.

Los sistemas de ductos brindan una conexión entre puertos, campos petrolíferos, refinerías y mercados de consumo. Los productos refinados como gasolinas, diésel, turbo-combustible, queroseno, entre otros, son transportados a través de una misma tubería. De esta forma se evitan costos adicionales de varias tuberías dedicadas a productos específicos. Este modo de transporte presenta el problema de la mezcla o contaminación entre productos, lo que incrementa los costos de operación. En este sentido, esta investigación presenta el problema de modelamiento y simulación de ductos utilizados para el transporte de diferentes clases de fluidos. Tal problema es solucionado teniendo en cuenta la presión, velocidad del medio y la densidad del fluido. Se considera un modelo matemático para predecir la cantidad de contaminación entre productos y se presenta el caso de varios tramos de tubería unidos por un modelo algebraico de bomba centrífuga. Con base en lo anterior, se diseña una estrategia de control predictivo teniendo en cuenta la optimización con subprocesos vecinos para coordinar los controles locales en las estaciones de bombeo y así lograr un rendimiento global en los niveles de contaminación. Finalmente, los resultados obtenidos confirman la eficiencia de la estrategia de control predictivo-cooperativo aplicada a una red de bombas centrífugas en un sistema serial de poliductos.

The output power of a photovoltaic (PV) module depends on the solar irradiance and the operating temperature; therefore, it is necessary to implement maximum power point tracking controllers (MPPT) to obtain the maximum power of a PV system regardless of variations in climatic conditions. The traditional solution for MPPT controllers is the perturbation and observation (P&O) algorithm, which presents oscillation problems around the operating point; the reason why improving the results obtained with this algorithm has become an important goal to reach for researchers. This paper presents the design and modeling of a fuzzy controller for tracking the maximum power point of a PV System. Matlab/Simulink (MathWorks, Natick, MA, USA) was used for the modeling of the components of a 65 W PV system: PV module, buck converter and fuzzy controller; highlighting as main novelty the use of a mathematical model for the PV module, which, unlike diode based models, only needs to calculate the curve fitting parameter. A P&O controller to compare the results obtained with the fuzzy control was designed. The simulation results demonstrated the superiority of the fuzzy controller in terms of settling time, power loss and oscillations at the operating point.

The design and implementation of a low-cost system for monitoring and remote control of a greenhouse using fuzzy logic is presented. For the control system, an Arduino Mega board was programmed with a fuzzy algorithm to monitor and perform control actions for environmental temperature, soil moisture, relative humidity, and lighting. A website was designed to visualize the main indicators of agricultural interest and to get access to tools such as forced ventilation, misting systems, and sprinkler irrigation. For connectivity to the webpage, an Arduino Ethernet Shield was used. Thus, it was possible to establish a local area network and monitor and control the greenhouse climate variables manually or automatically. The application designed allowed access to the configuration, monitoring, and control of climatic conditions in the greenhouse. The effectiveness of fuzzy logic to control nonlinear systems was therefore verified without the mathematical model of the plant. Thus, the use of resources for a gable roof greenhouse prototype was optimized.

En este artículo de investigación científica y desarrollo tecnológico, se presenta el diseño de un sistema de control de autorregulación de oxígeno, mediante lógica difusa, que permite suministrar a un paciente una cantidad exacta de la fracción inspirada de oxígeno FIO2 teniendo en cuenta los niveles de saturación de oxígeno. Para tal efecto, se realizó el modelado matemático de la curva de disociación de hemoglobina a partir de datos obtenidos por oximetría que relacionan la saturación de oxígeno O2 y la presión de oxígeno PAO2. Posteriormente, se realizó el modelado de una válvula proporcional para aplicaciones médicas, la cual recibe una señal de corriente obtenida a partir de la mezcla de aire y oxígeno. Finalmente se diseñó el controlador difuso tipo Sugeno con una entrada, una salida para la apertura de la válvula y once reglas difusas definidas a partir de la entrevista con especialistas. De esta forma se realizó una investigación del tipo factible soportada en un diseño de campo y en uno documental. Los resultados obtenidos demostraron la efectividad del controlador difuso para mantener la válvula en un nivel exacto de FIO2 compuesto por la mezcla de aire y oxígeno. This research presents the design of an oxygen auto-regulation control system based on fuzzy logic, which allows delivering an exact quantity of the fraction of inspired oxygen FIO2 to the patient based on the oxygen saturation levels. For this, it was performed the math modeling of hemoglobin dissociation curve from data obtained by oximetry relating oxygen saturation O2 and Oxygen pressure PAO2. Then, a proportional valve for medical applications was modeled; this receives a current signal obtained from the air-oxygen blend. Finally, it was designed a fuzzy controller from the Sugeno type with one input, one output for the valve and eleven fuzzy rules specified from the interview with medical specialists. A feasible type research was done, supported on a field design and a documentary one. Results shown the effectiveness of the fuzzy controller to keep the valve to an exact level of FIO2 consisting of an air-oxygen blend.
