Application of the plant growth regulator paclobutrazol (PBZ) to aid mango floral induction has been widely performed by mango producers. However, its application has been done manually, resulting in low uniformity of application and losses with labor. The objective of this study was to adjust the PBZ dose to be applied via micro-sprinkler system for floral induction, indicating an efficient management of ‘Palmer’ mango in the Brazilian semiarid. The experiment was conducted at Saúde Farm, located in Petrolina-PE, Brazil. The experimental design used was randomized blocks, with five doses of PBZ, applied via irrigation system (T1 - 0.56; T2 - 1.12; T3 -1.68; T4 - 2.24; and T5 - 2.80 g a.i. linear m-1 canopy) and a conventionally applied dose (T0 - 2.80 g a.i. linear m-1 of canopy, manually applied broadcast), with four replicates. The variables analyzed were: photosynthesis rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration, leaf temperature, number and length of panicles, number of fruits per plant, average fruit weight, yield, pulp firmness, titratable acidity and total soluble solids in the fruits. At the conventionally applied dose (2.8 g a.i. linear m-1 of canopy), PBZ application via micro-sprinkler irrigation system proved to be the most efficient way to reduce photosynthesis rate, stomatal conductance and transpiration. PBZ applied via micro-sprinkler irrigation system at a dose of 0.56 g a.i. linear m-1 of canopy promotes greater number of panicles and yield in ‘Palmer’ mango.

No Brasil o Ensino de Matemática apresenta-se de forma singular nas escolas indígenas da Bahia. Através das indagações dos professores de Matemática do Ensino Fundamental em formação pela Licenciatura Intercultural Indígena – LICEEI da etnia Kiriri, por suas necessidades de uma abordagem epistemológica no tocante à possibilidade da interculturalidade no ensino de Matemática Intercultural. Assim, este artigo se propõe a realizar uma análise e reflexão sobre um ensino de Matemática intercultural na Colégio Estadual Indígena Kiriri Índio Feliz – Aldeia Cajazeira/ BA. Dessa forma, para alcançamos os objetivos propostos, acreditamos que a metodologia etnográfica mais se adequa ao nosso propósito, já que o estudo das relações interculturais só pode se desenvolver a partir dos vínculos interpessoais em sua facticidade histórica. Sendo assim, o estudo convenceu-nos da grande vantagem didático-conceitual da utilização do saber Etnomatemático para representar e modelar os principais conceitos da Matemática. Isto se deve em grande parte à capacidade do diálogo existente entre a cultura indígena e os fenômenos naturais estudados em Matemática.&nbsp

Repair of medial meniscal root tear is nowadays a validated procedure in order to restore knee biomechanics and to prevent early development of arthritis. There are various techniques described, without any being considered superior. This article describes a technique with a knotless suture anchor design, using a high posteromedial portal to insert the anchor and a meniscal suture passer device from the anteromedial portal. The technique eliminates the need for transtibial drilling and knot tying, and it certifies a strong reproducible tension.

As cucurbitáceas abrangem espécies de importância para o Nordeste brasileiro, dentre elas o melão, a melancia e o pepino são as que possuem maior expressividade de cultivo. O sistema de produção dessas hortaliças requer a presença de nitrogênio, que, sendo que a redução do nitrato por meio da atividade da redutase do nitrato no citosol da célula é uma parte importante do processo de incorporação do N em aminoácidos. Contudo, as metodologias utilizadas são diversas e aplicadas em diversas culturas de forma geral, havendo a necessidade de uma maior especificidade. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo padronizar as condições mais apropriadas para a determinação da atividade da RN, in vivo, no tecido foliar de melancia, melão e pepino. O experimento foi conduzido em delineamento inteiramente casualizado em fatorial 3x3, compreendendo três metodologias in vivo e três propostas de infiltração do material vegetal (banho-maria, estufa e a vácuo), com quatro repetições. As plantas foram conduzidas em casa de vegetação e os tecidos foliares completamente expandidos foram coletados, após 20 dias da germinação, para a condução dos métodos enzimáticos e avaliar a atividade da enzima redutase do nitrato (NR). Os resultados obtidos demonstraram que a maior atividade da NR no tecido foliar de melancia e melão foi obtida utilizando a Metodologia 1 submetido ao vácuo, enquanto que para o pepino o melhor ensaio foi o Metodologia 2, quando também submetido ao vácuo. Optimization of in vivo test conditions of nitrate enzyme reductase in Cucurbitacea ABSTRACT: Cucurbits include species of importance to the Northeast of Brazil, among them melon, watermelon and cucumber are those that have the most expressive cultivation. The production system of these vegetables requires the presence of nitrogen, which, whereas the reduction of nitrate through the activity of nitrate reductase in the cell's cytosol is an important part of the process of incorporating N into amino acids. However, the methodologies used are diverse and applied in different cultures in general, with the need for greater specificity. The present study aimed to standardize the most appropriate conditions for determining the activity of RN, in vivo, in the leaf tissue of watermelon, melon and cucumber. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design in a 3x3 factorial, comprising three in vivo methodologies and three proposals for infiltration of plant material (water bath, greenhouse and vacuum), with four replications. The plants were conducted in a greenhouse and the fully expanded leaf tissues were collected, after 20 days of germination, to conduct the enzymatic methods and evaluate the activity of the nitrate reductase (NR) enzyme. The results obtained demonstrated that the greatest activity of NR in the watermelon and melon leaf tissue was obtained using Methodology 1 submitted to vacuum, while for cucumber the best test was Methodology 2, when also submitted to vacuum. Trauma teams (TTs) are a key tool in trauma care, as they bring a multidisciplinary approach to the trauma patient, improving outcomes. Excellent teamwork (TW) requires not only individual skills but also training at non-technical skills (NTS). Although there is evidence supporting TTs, there is little information regarding how they are organized and trained. With this study, we intend to assess the reality of TTs all over the world, focusing on how they are organized and trained.We composed a 42-question sheet on Google Forms, in four different languages (English, Polish, Portuguese, and Spanish). The questions regarded the respondents' background, and their respective hospitals' trauma patient management, TT features and its training, NTS and TW. The survey was shared on social media, through the International Assessment Group of Online SurgicalTrauma Education community, and the European Society of Trauma and Emergency Surgery. Statistical analysis was performed on Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSSWe obtained 296 answers from 52 different countries, with 6 having at least 10 answers (Brazil, Portugal, Poland, Spain, Italy, and USA). While the majority of the respondents (97%) agreed that TTs can improve outcomes, only 61% have a TT in their hospital, with 69% of these being dedicated TTs. General surgery (76%), trauma surgery (68%), and anesthesia (66%) were the three most common specialties in the teams. Teams performed briefings and debriefings with a frequency of, at least, "often" in only 49% and 38%, respectively. Only 50% and 33% of the respondents stated that their hospital provided trauma management courses focusing on individual technical skills, and TT training courses, respectively. The Advanced Trauma Life Support (85%), the Definitive Surgical and Anesthetic Trauma Care (38%), and the European Trauma Course (31%) were the three trauma management courses of choice. Regarding TT training courses, the European Trauma Course (52%) and local/in-house (42%) courses were the most common ones. Most participants (93%) stated that NTS were highly important in trauma care. However, only 60% of the respondents had postgraduate training on NTS and TW, and only 24% had this type of training on an undergraduate level.The number of TTs worldwide does not match their relevance in trauma care. Institutions are not providing enough trauma courses, particularly TT training courses and NTS teaching. Implementing TT should include promotion of team courses, as well as team briefings and debriefings.

Salt stress is one of the most limiting environmental factors for agricultural yields in the Semiarid region of Brazil. Considering the expansion of areas with sugarcane crops in this region, the selection of more adapted plant varieties to this environment is an essential tool for the sustainability of this activity. Thus, the objective of the present work was to evaluate the physiological and biochemical responses of plants of ten sugarcane varieties to salt stress. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse using a randomized block design, in a 6×10 factorial arrangement consisting of six salinity levels in the irrigation water (0, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0, 6.0, and 8.0 dS m-1) and ten sugarcane varieties (VAT 90212, RB 72454, RB 867515, Q 124, RB 961003, RB 957508, SP 791011, RB 835089, RB 92579, and SP 943206), with three replications. Salt waters were applied every two days to increase the soil moisture to field capacity and promote leaching. The gas exchange, chlorophyll content, and total soluble and reducing sugars of leaves were evaluated at 90 days after planting. The highest chlorophyll contents were found in plants of the varieties Q 124, RB 96103, RB 835089, and SP 943206. The effect of salinity on the sugarcane plants affected their leaf gas exchanges and total soluble and reducing sugar contents, denoting the adaptability of plants to the stress conditions evaluated. The decrease of stomatal conductance resulted in decreases in photosynthetic rates in plants of all sugarcane varieties evaluated, except for RB 867515. RESUMO O estresse salino é um dos fatores ambientais que mais limitam a produtividade agrícola no semiárido brasileiro. Considerando-se a expansão da área de cultivo de cana-de-açúcar nesta região, a seleção de variedades cada vez mais adaptadas a este meio ambiente torna-se uma ferramenta fundamental para sua sustentabilidade. Assim, o presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar as respostas fisiológicas e bioquímicas de dez variedades de cana-de-açúcar submetidas à salinidade. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação no delineamento de blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 6 x 10, com seis níveis de salinidade da água de irrigação (0; 1,0; 2,0; 4,0; 6,0 e 8,0 dS m-1) e dez variedades de cana-de-açúcar (VAT 90212, RB 72454, RB 867515, Q 124, RB 961003, RB 957508, SP 791011, RB 835089, RB 92579 e SP 943206), com três repetições. As águas salinas foram aplicadas a cada dois dias a fim de elevar a umidade do solo à capacidade de campo e promover lixiviação. Aos 90 dias após o plantio foram avaliadas as trocas gasosas, o teor de clorofila e os açucares solúveis totais e redutores das folhas. Os maiores teores de clorofila foram obtidos nas variedades Q 124, RB 96103, RB 835089 e SP 943206. O efeito da salinidade sobre as variedades de cana-de-açúcar influenciou na variação das trocas gasosas, no teor de açúcares solúveis totais e açúcares redutores, demonstrando uma adaptabilidade da planta às condições de estresse submetida. A redução da condutância estomática resultou na diminuição das taxas fotossintéticas de todas as variedades de cana-de-açúcar avaliadas, exceto a RB 867515.

Purpose The COVID-19 pandemic has changed working conditions for emergency surgical teams around the world. International surgical societies have issued clinical recommendations to optimize surgical management. This international study aimed to assess the degree of emergency surgical teams’ adoption of recommendations during the pandemic. Methods Emergency surgical team members from over 30 countries were invited to answer an anonymous, prospective, online survey to assess team organization, PPE-related aspects, OR preparations, anesthesiologic considerations, and surgical management for emergency surgery during the pandemic. Results One-hundred-and-thirty-four questionnaires were returned (N = 134) from 26 countries, of which 88% were surgeons, 7% surgical trainees, 4% anesthetists. 81% of the respondents got involved with COVID-19 crisis management. Social media were used by 91% of the respondents to access the recommendations, and 66% used videoconference tools for team communication. 51% had not received PPE training before the pandemic, 73% reported equipment shortage, and 55% informed about re-use of N95/FPP2/3 respirators. Dedicated COVID operating areas were cited by 77% of the respondents, 44% had performed emergency surgical procedures on COVID-19 patients, and over half (52%), favored performing laparoscopic over open surgical procedures. Conclusion Surgical team members have responded with leadership to the COVID-19 pandemic, with crisis management principles. Social media and videoconference have been used by the vast majority to access guidelines or to communicate during social distancing. The level of adoption of current recommendations is high for organizational aspects and surgical management, but not so for PPE training and availability, and anesthesiologic considerations.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar numa escala temporal, os efeitos de doses de biofertilizante sobre as variáveis relacionadas às trocas gasosas e bioquímicas em três variedades de melancia cultivadas em sistema orgânico no semiárido nordestino. O experimento foi conduzido no campo experimental de Bebedouro (CEB) da EMBRAPA Semiárido em Petrolina-PE, com delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados, num esquema fatorial em parcela subsubdividida (3x6x3), contendo nas parcelas três variedades de melancia (Explorer; Red Heaven, e Majestic); nas subparcelas seis doses de biofertilizante (0; 80; 160; 240; 320 e 400 mL planta-1) e nas subsubparcelas três coletas ao longo do ciclo da cultura (30, 45 e 60 DAS), com quatro repetições. As doses intermediárias, entre 120 e 250 mL planta-1, dobiofertilizante proporcionaram os melhores valores de fotossíntese, condutância estomática, transpiração, açúcares solúveis totais e atividade da enzima redutase do nitrato nas variedades de melancia, com destaque para a variedade Explorer. As trocas gasosas e os parâmetros bioquímicos foram superiores na fase inicial e intermediaria do ciclo de cultivo, de 30 e 45 dias após semeadura. From the time he starts exhibiting in the Royal Academy of Arts, in 1874, until his death, in 1917, J. W. Waterhouse maintained a constant relationship with the classical texts, namely Ovid’s Metamorphoses, based on which he produced seven admirable canvases and various studies. One of these works – Echo and Narcissus (1903; Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool; oil on canvas, 109 cm x 189 cm) – is so well known that it is the most reproduced image of the gallery of Liverpool. In fact, the gallery was a pioneer in the acquisition of the copyright, when acquired the canvas from the artist at the Liverpool Autumn Exhibition in 1903. In addition to this work, the painter also used the flower as a recurrent motif in his paintings, naming one of his canvas Narcissus, in 1912, whose composition depicts a flowery English meadow. We propose to analyze Echo and Narcissus, relating it with Ovid’s text and, afterword, studying other paintings that evokes the flower and the figure of the myth., Desde que começa a expor na Royal Academy of Arts, em 1874, até à sua morte, em 1917, J. O cultivo do melão é uma das principais fontes na geração de emprego e renda no semiárido brasileiro. Porém, o uso demasiado de fertilizantes nesta cultura tem proporcionado o manejo da adubação através do fertilizante organomineral, que busca reduzir os impactos ambientais, melhorando a produtividade e qualidade do fruto, facilitando a lenta liberação de nutrientes além de proporcionar melhorias nos atributos físico-químico e biológicos do solo. Neste sentido, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os componentes de produção e qualidade pós-colheita dos frutos de meloeiro fertirrigado com doses de fertillizante organomineral. Os experimentos foram conduzidos de abril a junho (primeira safra) e de outubro a dezembro (segunda safra). O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados, com cinco repetições, com os tratamentos dispostos em parcelas subsubdivididas, onde nas parcelas foram atribuídos dois manejos de fertirrigação, a convencional e o uso recomendado de ureia; e na subparcela, quatro doses do fertilizante organomineral, 0; 1000; 2000; e 3000 mL ha-1 e como subsubparcela duas safras agrícolas. Utilizou-se o híbrido de melão ?Gladial?, cujas variáveis avaliadas foram: diâmetro e comprimento de fruto, espessura de polpa, firmeza de polpa, número e peso médio dos frutos por planta, produtividade total, e produtividade comercial. A segunda safra (outubro a dezembro) obteve o melhor desempenho agronômico para o cultivo do melão. Recomenda-se a utilização do fertilizante organomineral na dose de 2228 mL ha-1, associado à fertirrigação convencional no segundo semestre para o aumento da produtividade e qualidade dos frutos. This event reflects the author's involvement in internationally recognized education and training models, as ATLS, ETC, and DSTC, and UEMS Boards of Emergency SurgeryDo different countries need very different things? I don’t think so, for the simple reason that in Europe and about the challenges we face, with regard to trauma and other medical and surgical emergencies, similarities are much greater than differences.• We all agree on the need for a trauma system “to assure that patients (…) seamlessly receive the proper care, in the proper locations, with proper interventions and, if necessary, transfer to a hospital able to provide the best and most appropriate care” (www.aast.org).• We all agree that teamwork is necessary for prehospital care, transportation, emergency room care, intensive care, surgery, and in/post-hospital rehabilitation.• We all agree on the need for trauma registries with, as much as possible, global follow-up of patient's course.• And finally, we all agree that it is necessary to educate, how to prevent and how to treat.This is also apparent from the recommendations of the European Trauma Course Organization (ETCO) about equipment and facilities: complete trauma team, trauma admission bay close to the ambulance entrance, enough space and adequate lighting, the adjacent operating room to allow emergency procedures, standardequipment for the initial management of major trauma, immediate availability of additional equipment as difficult airway equipment, X-ray, ultrasound machine, surgical instruments, readily available bloodproducts and massive transfusion equipment, co-located CT scanner to allow immediately imaging and access to angiography and interventional radiology, 24 hours a day within 30-60 minutes of request.

Lateral meniscus lesions result in loss of meniscus hoop stresses and can lead to lateral compartment overload and early degenerative changes. Arthroscopic suture repair provides good long-term results. However, posterior vertical tears in the peripheral area of the meniscus can be technically challenging to resolve. This Technical Note describes the suture hook technique using an accessory posterolateral portal. We believe it is a safe, effective method for repairing full vertical tears of the lateral meniscus.

STUDY DESIGN Retrospective patient series analysis with update of long-term data. OBJECTIVE To define the long-term prognosis of the thoracolumbar/lumbar correction after selective anterior spinal fusion (ASF) in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA The ASF is a well-described procedure for the treatment of AIS. The correction reliability over time, the consequences in adjacent spinal levels and patient's quality of life are fundamental for the characterization of AIS treatment. METHODS One hundred seven patients were submitted to single-rod ASF for thoracolumbar/lumbar (ThL/L) AIS between 1993 and 2016 in a single-surgeon experience. Seventy five were available for final follow-up evaluation 9 years ±4 (2-23) after surgery. A clinical and sequential radiographic evaluations were performed. RESULTS The mean age at surgery was 16 years ± 2.33 (14-20) and 94 (87%) were females. The mean final follow-up of the 75 patients available was 9 years ± 4 (2-23). Sixty-five patients had a Lenke type 5C curve and 10 had a type 6C curve. The mean values of the Scoliosis Research Society 22 (SRS-22) questionnaire in Lenke 5C was 92 ± 9 (71-109) and in Lenke 6C 90.3 ± 9 (75-107). In Lenke 5C group, the mean preoperative ThL Cobb angle was 38.4° ± 9.3 (21-60) and the postoperative was 5.9° ± 4.5 (0-18; P 0.05). In Lenke 6C group, the mean preoperative ThL Cobb angle was 58.6° ± 13.9 (40-90) and the postoperative ThL Cobb was 22.6° ± 14.5 (5-48, P 0.05). Cacao is native to the Amazon rainforest and has adapted well to the climate and soils of southern Bahia. The potential expansion of cacao farming to non-traditional areas could generate foreign exchange for the country by reducing imports or even allowing the country to return to the role of cocoa bean exporter. It is known that nitrogen fertilization is essential for cacao cultivation, due to its high demand for this nutrient. Accordingly, the influence of fertilization of two nitrogen sources (urea and calcium nitrate), on total soluble protein (PTN), total soluble sugars (AST), reducing sugars (RA), sucrose, Nitrate Reductase enzyme (NR) activity and chlorophyll indexes of cloned cacao in the Lower São Francisco Valley were investigated. The experimental format was a randomized complete block design, in a 5 x 2 factorial scheme, the first factor being five cacao clones (PH-16, CCN-51, PS-1319, CCN-10 and TSH-1188), and the second factor, two sources of nitrogen (calcium nitrate and urea), with three replicates. The different nitrogen sources presented different behavior in relation to the physiological characteristics of the clones evaluated. Regardless of the nitrogen source, the nitrate reductase enzyme showed greater levels of translation activity in cacao leaf than in root tissue. = O cacaueiro é originário da floresta amazônica e adaptou-se perfeitamente ao clima e aos solos do Sul da Bahia. A possibilidade de expansão da cacauicultura para áreas não tradicionais pode gerar divisas para o país pela diminuição da importação ou, até mesmo, possibilitar que o Brasil retorne ao papel de exportador de amêndoas de cacau. Em razão da sua elevada demanda, a adubação nitrogenada é fundamental no seu cultivo. Assim, objetivou-se neste trabalho avaliar a influência da adubação com duas fontes de nitrogênio (ureia e nitrato de cálcio), nos teores de proteínas solúveis totais (PTN), açúcares solúveis totais (AST), açúcares redutores (AR), sacarose, na enzima Redutase do Nitrato (RN) e nos índices de clorofila, de cacaueiros clonados, no Vale do Submédio São Francisco. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos ao acaso, em esquema fatorial (5 x 2), sendo o primeiro fator, cinco clones de cacaueiros (PH-16, CCN-51, PS-1319, CCN-10 e TSH-1188), e o segundo fator, duas fontes de nitrogênio (nitrato de cálcio e ureia), com três repetições. As diferentes fontes nitrogenadas apresentaram comportamento diferenciado com relação às características fisiológicas nos clones avaliados. Independentemente da fonte nitrogenada, a enzima redutase do nitrato atua com maior eficácia no tecido foliar do que no tecido radicular do cacaueiro.

No presente estudo avaliamos o efeito do controle espectral da luz sobre as características anatômicas das folhas em três cultivares de minitomates. As plantas foram cultivadas em ambientes sombreados com telas tipo cinza, tipo vermelho e tipo azul, além do tratamento testemunha sem sombreamento. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados, parcela subdividida, com quatro repetições. Plantas submetidas a pleno sol apresentaram maior espessura foliar, densidade estomática em adaxial e adaptabilidade do processo fotomorfogenético às condições ambientais, ajustando o processo fotossintético e produção de assimilados. As plantas cultivadas sob telas coloridas apresentaram diferenças na espessura da epiderme, com superioridade para a epiderme adaxial em relação à abaxial, mas também para o parênquima paliçádico e esponjoso. As plantas mantidas sob diferentes telas de sombreamento apresentaram variações no número de estômatos, apresentando uma característica de alta plasticidade com o ambiente modificado. As cultivares Shani e Sweet Miller responderam ao ambiente com as malhas fotoseletoras, destacando-se o ganho com relação ao número de estômatos na tela vermelha, que consequentemente, poderá estar associado a uma maior eficiência fotossintética e produção de fotoassimilados.

Na região do Submédio Vale do São Francisco, o manejo da adubação convencional no cultivo do melão tem destaque, contudo, o uso constante desses fertilizantes tem promovido uma busca por manejos alternativos que busquem reduzir os impactos ambientais e melhorando a produtividade. O uso de biofertilizantes tem sido uma alternativa para produção de muitas culturas, dentre elas o meloeiro, pois este produto tem a capacidade de fornecer nutrientes essenciais às plantas. Logo, este estudo tem com o objetivo avaliar a influencia de diferentes doses de dois biofertilizantes, no crescimento e metabolismo do meloeiro (cv. Gold Mine) ao longo do seu ciclo. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi em blocos casualizados, no esquema fatorial 5x3, compreendendo dois tipos de biofertilizantes (Algamare® e Vorax®), combinados em cinco dosagens: (dosagens 1 – água (controle); 2 - 288/40 µl; 3 - 576/80 µl; 4 - 1.152/160 µl; 5 - 2.304/320 µl) e três épocas de avaliação (30, 45 e 60 DAT), com três repetições. Como variáveis de crescimento avaliaram-se: altura da planta, diâmetro do colo, área foliar, número de folhas. As variáveis bioquímicas analisadas foram: teor de clorofila, atividade da enzima nitrato redutase (tecido foliar), açúcares redutores, açúcares solúveis totais, proteínas solúveis totais e prolina. Concluiu-se que a utilização do biofertilizante na cultura do meloeiro promoveu incremento no crescimento e metabolismo da planta, contribuindo com o aumento do número de folhas, do teor de clorofila, área foliar da planta, atividade da enzima nitrato redutase e do aminoácido prolina. Recomenda-se a combinação dos biofertilizantes Algamare® e Vorax® na dosagem de 576/80 µl, respectivamente.

14 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables, Brown crab (Cancer pagurus) is a widely distributed crustacean that occurs around the British coastline supporting important commercial fisheries. The habitat preferences of brown crab around Scotland are poorly documented and for the purposes of stock assessment, the species is considered data-poor. Based on an analysis of dredge and trawl surveys taking place in the North Sea (2008–2018), we describe the spatial distribution of brown crab and for the first time, develop abundance and recruitment indices for the species. We make use of geostatistical methods and apply generalized additive models to model catch rates in relation to a number of explanatory variables (depth, distance to the coast, sediment type and year). The dredge and trawl abundance indices were correlated showing a similar trend of increasing catch rates in the early years of the time series up to 2016 and a subsequent reduction. The recruitment index showed a gradual increase in captured juvenile crabs up to 2014 followed by a steep decrease with 2018 being the lowest value estimated. The derivation of robust indicators of stock abundance will contribute to the stock assessment of this species and enable the provision of improved fisheries management advice for brown crab around Scotland, This study was funded by the Marine Collaboration Research Forum (MarCRF), with Marine Scotland Science and the University of Aberdeen

The paclobutrazol has been widely used to stimulate the flowering of mango trees, regulating vegetative growth and promoting changes in photosynthetic activity and in the production of photoassimilates. In this context, the objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of forms and doses of PBZ on the biochemical and physiological variables of mango, cultivar ?Tommy Atkins,? in the Brazilian semiarid region. The experimental design was randomized blocks in a 5 x 2 + 1 factorial design with the first factor was paclobutrazol doses applied by irrigation (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 g a.i.-1, linear canopy); the second factor was two phases of collection (vegetative and flowering), and an additional treatment (control) with the application of a dose in the conventional form (2.0 g a.i.-1 linear canopy applied manually by haul), and four replications. The variables analyzed were levels of total soluble sugars, reducing sugars, non-reducing sugars, total amino acids, total soluble proteins, liquid photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, transpiration, and leaf temperature. The application of PBZ by fertigation proved more efficient than the conventional application, allowing a greater assimilation of the product by the plant and the reduction of the dose. Most biochemical characteristics showed the highest values by applying lower doses of paclobutrazol. The development of the various surgical specialties and their respective training programs, together with some shortening in the duration of the residencies, has led to their separation from what we might call the mother speciality, General Surgery. In some cases, like Gynecology and Obstetrics, at least in my country, this has become total, with reflexes in the hospital clinical practice. Similarly, the training in General Surgery has been emptied from surgical exposure to other organs, systems and anatomical areas, with an increasing focus on digestive tract pathology and emphasis on laparoscopic approaches, which may make the general surgeon himself feel less prepared for acute gynecological or obstetric pathology. Although, in elective surgical practice, there tends to be an approach between the General Surgery and Gynecology teams, with the establishment of close collaborations, especially in the treatment of peritoneal dissemination of ovarian neoplasias, it is in the context of urgency that there is more to be done.

Shading screens are widely used to control excessive solar radiation, thereby changing plant growth. Thus, through physiological indices the objective was to evaluate the growth of three cultivars of minitomatoes under colored meshes. The experiment was conducted from April to July in the DTCS / UNEB experimental field in experiment DBC with subdivided plots, and four replicates, comprised of three shaded environments and the control treatment, three cultivars, and seven plant sampling seasons. For growth analysis, we used the destructive method, total dry matter was determined after drying it in an oven at 65°C. The total leaf area (LAI) was obtained using the software QUANT. Results showed that there was no interaction between environments and the other factors. Regarding leaf area index, cvs. Shani and Sweet Million stood out in all environments, whereas cv. Red Sugar had a similar behavior in all environments. Shani obtained the best indices in open sun environment and in the environment covered with red shading screen, and Sweet Million obtained the best index under gray shading screen. Red Sugar had the lowest LAI, and consequently, the lowest SLA and LAR. On the other hand, it showed the highest RPF, since it obtained the highest dry matter in leaves compared to the other cultivars. Cvs. Shani and Sweet Million showed the best: TAL, TCR, TCA and TCC. As telas de sombreamento são utilizadas para controlar a radiação solar excessiva, podendo alterar o crescimento das plantas. Desse modo, objetivou-se por meio de índices fisiológicos avaliar o crescimento de três cultivares de mini tomates sob malhas coloridas. O experimento foi conduzido no período de abril a julho no campo experimental do DTCS/UNEB em delineamento experimental DBC, com parcelas subsubdivididas, com quatro repetições, compostos de três ambientes sombreados além do controle, três cultivares e sete épocas de amostragens. Para análise de crescimento, utilizou-se o método destrutivo e as massas secas totais obtidas após secagem em estufa a 65°C. A área foliar total foi obtida usando-se o software QUANT. Os resultados mostraram que não houve interação entre os ambientes e os demais fatores. Quanto as cvs., para índice de área foliar (LAI), destacaram-se as cvs. Shani e Sweet Million dentro de cada ambiente, tendo a cultivar Red Sugar comportamento similar nos ambientes. A cv. Shani obteve os melhores índices no ambiente a céu aberto e com tela vermelha e a cv. Sweet Million o melhor índice na tela cinza. A cv. Red Sugar apresentou o menor LAI, e consequentemente à menor AFE e RAF, em contrapartida apresentou a maior RPF, uma vez que obteve a maior massa seca nas folhas quando comparada as outras cultivares. As cvs. Shani e Sweet Million apresentaram as melhores: TAL, TCR, TCA e TCC.

The application of paclobutrazol (PBZ) by irrigation system to induce the flowering of mango may be an economically and environmentally more efficient practice. The objective of this work is to determine the most efficient dose of PBZ to be applied by irrigation system to manage the production and quality of fruits of the mango cultivar ‘Tommy Atkins’ in the middle region of the São Francisco Valley. The experimental design was randomized blocks with five paclobutrazol doses applied by irrigation system (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 g a.i.-1, linear canopy) and an additional treatment (control) with the application of a dose using the conventional form (2.0 g a.i.-1 linear canopy applied manually by haul), and four replications. The variables analyzed were number of panicles, panicle length, number of fruits per plant, average fruit weight, production per plant, economic viability, and qualitative characteristics of fruits. The application of paclobutrazol by irrigation system is more efficient than the conventional application, in which the dose 1.4 g a.i.-1 linear canopy provided a greater number of fruits and a greater production per plant. The highest content of total soluble solids in fruits was obtained at the dose 1.3 g a.i.-1 linear canopy, and acidity decreased as the applied dose of PBZ increased. Regarding the economic analysis, the results show that the application of PBZ by irrigation system increases the revenue by R$ 5,328.00 per hectare in comparison with the conventional application. La aplicación de paclobutrazol (PBZ) a través del sistema de riego, para inducir la floración de la manguera, permite una aplicación segura además de su mejor disponibilidad, reduciendo los costos de producción y protegiendo al trabajador y el medio ambiente. El objetivo de este trabajo fue determinar la dosis más eficiente de PBZ que se aplicará a través del sistema de riego para administrar la producción y la calidad de las frutas en el cultivar de mango Tommy Atkins en la región Sub-Media del Valle de São Francisco. El diseño experimental utilizado fue en bloques al azar, con cinco dosis de PBZ aplicadas a través del sistema de riego (0.5; 1.0; 1.5; 2.0; 2.5 g corona lineal iam-1) y un tratamiento adicional (control), con la aplicación de una dosis en la forma convencional (2.0 giam-1 lineal de copa aplicada manualmente al arrastre), con cuatro repeticiones. Las variables analizadas fueron: número y longitud de la panícula, número de frutos por planta, peso promedio del fruto, producción por planta y las características cualitativas de los frutos. La aplicación de PBZ a través del sistema de riego demostró ser más eficiente que la aplicación convencional, en la que la dosis lineal de 1,4 g i.a.m-1 de la corona proporcionó un mayor número de frutos y producción por planta. El mayor contenido de sólidos solubles totales en las frutas se obtuvo a una dosis de 1.3 g.i.a.m-1 de corona lineal y la acidez disminuyó a medida que aumentó la dosis aplicada de PBZ. Con respecto al análisis económico, los resultados muestran que la aplicación de PBZ por el sistema de riego aumenta los ingresos en R$ 5.328,00 por hectárea en comparación con la aplicación convencional. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi em blocos casualizados, com cinco doses de PBZ aplicadas via sistema de irrigação (0,5; 1,0; 1,5; 2,0; 2,5 g i.a.m-1 linear de copa) e um tratamento adicional (controle), com a aplicação de uma dose na forma convencional (2,0 g.i.a.m-1 linear de copa aplicada manualmente a lanço), com quatro repetições. As variáveis analisadas foram: número e comprimento da panícula, número de frutos por planta, peso médio de fruto, produção por planta e as características qualitativas dos frutos. O cultivo do feijão caupi vem se destacando por ser uma cultura adaptável para a região árida e semi-árida do Nordeste brasileiro. Dentre os fatores que reduzem a sua produção, o déficit hídrico e a adubação, tem destaque. Devido a sua capacidade de realizar simbiose com bactérias noduladoras, poderá optimizar a fixação do N2 atmosférico dependendo da combinação e compatibilidade das estirpes envolvidas. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a resposta de plantas de feijão-caupi (cultivar BRS Marataoã) sob déficit hídrico inoculadas e coinoculadas com bactérias fixadoras de nitrogênio. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado em esquema de parcelas subdivididas com dois fatores (4x5), composto por: T1: BR3264 (A); T2: BR85 (B); T3: BR3264+BR85 (C); T4: controle nitrogenado (CN); T5: controle absoluto (CA), associado com as lâminas de água nas seguintes proporções: 100 %, 80%, 60% e 40% da evapotranspiração da cultura (ETc). As análises foram realizadas aos 45 dias após a emergência (DAE) e compostas de parâmetros filotécnicos (número de folhas, altura da planta, diâmetro do caule, clorofila a, b e total) e bioquímicos (teores de açúcares solúveis totais, açúcares redutores, e prolina). Os resultados obtidos demonstraram que o déficit hídrico ocasionou influência negativa no número de folhas, no diâmetro do caule, na altura das plantas, na clorofila A, na massa seca da parte aérea e na inoculação. A inoculação das cepas de rizóbio é reduzida quando submetida a plantas com estresse hídrico, se sobressaindo cepas nativas. Sendo que a inoculação cruzada favorece a inoculação nessas condições.

Chronic patellar tendinopathy remains a challenging problem. The first line of treatment is conservative; when this fails, surgical treatment is indicated. Several open and arthroscopic techniques have been described. We describe an alternative technique using ultrasound-guided electrocoagulation of neovessels that leaves the patellar tendon intact.

Seeking to understand the mechanisms of tolerance of melon plants under water deficit, this study aimed to evaluate the biochemical behavior of melon cultivars and the allocation of biomass under water deficit. Two experiments were conducted in a shaded environment in the experimental area of the State University of Bahia, Juazeiro / BA; the first was carried out in 2015 and the second in 2016. The experimental design was in randomized blocks, replicated three times, with subdivided plots; the plots consisted of four water application rates (50, 75, 100 and 125% of the crop evapotranspiration), the subplots of two melon cultivars 'Yellow' and 'Piel de Sapo'. The sub-subplots were the sampling periods: 15; 30 and 45 days after transplantation. In the first experiment it was evaluated: total soluble sugars, reducing sugars, total proteins. In the second experiment, in addition to biochemical analyzes, the allocation of biomass of leaves, branches, roots, fruits and root / shoot ratio was evaluated. At the end of both experiments, root proline and aerial part were evaluated. Both cultivars showed similar biochemical behavior, except for the accumulation of proline obtained in the cultivar 'Piel de sapo', which allowed greater biomass allocation to the fruit than the cultivar 'Amarelo'. Buscando comprender los mecanismos de tolerancia de las plantas de melón bajo déficit hídrico, este estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar el comportamiento bioquímico de los cultivares de melón y la asignación de biomasa bajo déficit hídrico. Se realizaron dos experimentos en un entorno sombreado en el área experimental de la Universidad Estatal de Bahía, Juazeiro / BA; la primera se realizó en 2015 y la segunda en 2016. El diseño experimental fue en bloques aleatorizados, replicados tres veces, con parcelas subdivididas; las parcelas consistieron en cuatro dosis de aplicación de agua (50, 75, 100 y 125% de la evapotranspiración del cultivo), las subparcelas de los dos cultivares de melón 'Amarillo' y 'Piel de Sapo'. Las subparcelas secundarias fueron los períodos de muestreo: 15; 30 y 45 días después del trasplante. En el primer experimento se evaluó: azúcares solubles totales, azúcares reductores, proteínas totales. En el segundo experimento, además de los análisis bioquímicos, se evaluó la asignación de biomasa de hojas, ramas, raíces, frutos y la relación raíz / brote. Al final de ambos experimentos, se evaluó la prolina de raíz y la parte aérea. Ambos cultivares mostraron un comportamiento bioquímico similar, excepto por la acumulación de prolina obtenida en el cultivar 'Piel de sapo', que permitió una mayor asignación de biomasa a la fruta que el cultivar 'Amarelo'. Buscando compreender os mecanismos de tolerância de plantas de melão sob déficit hídrico, este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o comportamento bioquímico de cultivares de melão e a alocação de biomassa sob déficit hídrico. Os dois experimentos foram conduzidos em ambiente sombreado na área experimental da Universidade Estadual da Bahia, Juazeiro / BA; o primeiro foi realizado em 2015 e o segundo em 2016. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados, replicados três vezes, com parcelas subdivididas; as parcelas consistiram em quatro taxas de aplicação de água (50, 75, 100 e 125% da evapotranspiração das culturas), as subparcelas de duas cultivares de melão 'Amarelo' e 'Piel de Sapo'. As sub-subparcelas foram os períodos de amostragem: 15; 30 e 45 dias após o transplante. No primeiro experimento foi avaliado: açúcares solúveis totais, açúcares redutores, proteínas totais. No segundo experimento, além das análises bioquímicas, foi avaliada a alocação de biomassa de folhas, galhos, raízes, frutos e razão raiz/ parte aérea. No final de ambos os experimentos foi avaliado prolina da raiz e parte aérea. Ambas as cultivares apresentaram comportamento bioquímico semelhante, exceto pelo acúmulo de prolina obtido na cultivar 'Piel de sapo', que permitiu maior alocação de biomassa para o fruto do que a cultivar 'Amarelo'.

Operative management of severe trauma requires excellent communication among team members. The surgeon and anesthesiologist need to interact efficiently, exchanging vital information. The Definitive Surgical Trauma Care (DSTC) and Definitive Anesthesia Trauma Care (DATC) courses provide an excellent opportunity for teamwork training. Our goal was to study the impact of the joint DSTC–DATC courses in candidates’ self-reported assessment in communication skills and techniques in a simulated intraoperative trauma scenario. Study population consists of 93 candidates (67 surgeons and 26 anesthesiologists) participating in four consecutive joint DSTC–DATC courses in May and June 2019 in Brazil (3) and in Portugal (1). Median age was 30 years; 53 (60%) of subjects were male (46 senior residents and 47 specialists). All participants attended joint lectures, case discussions and surgical skills session, emphasizing intraoperative communication. Post-course survey on several aspects of perioperative communication (responses on a Likert scale) was conducted with participants being asked which aspects of intraoperative communication they valued the most. All participants responded to the survey. Results displayed an increase in the self-assessed importance of team briefing and intraoperative communication, particularly routine periodic communication, rather than only at critical moments. Postoperative team debriefing was also valued as highly relevant. Closed-loop and direct, by-name communication were highly rated. Self-reported communication skills improved significantly during the course. Joint training in the DSTC–DATC courses improved candidates’ perception and skills on proficient intraoperative communication. Further studies should address both the durability of these changes and the potential impact on patient care.

12 pages, 9 figures, 6 tables, Minimum landing sizes (MLS) are commonly used to manage crustaceans and are generally set above the size at first maturity to ensure that some protection is afforded to exploited stocks. Despite the economic importance of the brown crab fishery in Scotland, the species is considered data-poor and only limited information is available on size-at-maturity. This study provides, for the first time, estimates of the size-at-maturity of brown crab on the east and west coasts of Scotland using gonadal and morphometric criteria. Gonadal maturity was determined from female ovary and male testes, which were classified macroscopically into development stages and their relationship with body size modelled using a logistic regression. Body morphometric maturity was studied by analysing morphometric changes in growth in the male chelae and female abdomens using generalized additive models and regression models to estimate the size at which changes in allometric relationships occur. Estimates of size-at-maturity using gonad development were 101-106 mm carapace width (CW) for males and 127-128 mm for females. Size-at-maturity based on the morphometric characters were 120-148 mm CW for males and 131-142 mm for females. Results show that brown crab maturity is likely to occur at lower sizes than the current MLS in Scotland, implying that crabs may be able to reproduce at least once before being harvested. Regional variations in local populations should be considered when setting a MLS and this study suggests that the current MLS of 150 mm is appropriate for both areas considered
