Background: Neural cells undergo functional or sensory loss due to neurological disorders. In addition to environmental or genetic factors, oxidative stress is a major contributor to neurodegeneration. In this context, there has been a growing interest in investigating the effects of EOs (EOs) in recent years, especially in the treatment of neuropathologies. The chemical and biological effects of EOs have led to important treatment tools for the management of various neurological disorders. Objective: In the present study we performed a systematic review that sought to comprehend the neuroprotective effects of different EOs. Method: This work is a systematic review where an electronic search was performed on PubMed, ScienceDirect, Cochrane Library and SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online) databases, covering the last 10 years, using “Essential oil” and “Neuroprotective effect” as reference terms. Results: A total of 9 articles were identified, in which the efficacy of EOs was described in experimental models of anxiety, dementia, oxidative stress, cerebral ischemia, Alzheimer’s disease, and oxidative toxicity. Conclusion: EOs from different species of medicinal plants have shown positive responses in neurological disorders such as anxiety, dementia, oxidative stress, cerebral ischemia, and oxidative toxicity. Thus, EOs emerges with the potential to be used as alternative agents in the treatment of neurological disorders.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different temperatures on incubation variables, performance, and morphometry of the duodenal mucosa of Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) submitted to chronic heat stress after hatching. We distributed 540 eggs in three incubators with a temperature of 37.8°C and 60% of humidity. From the 6th day of incubation until hatching, the temperatures were adjusted to (37.8°C, 38.5°C and 39.5°C). After hatching, quails were evaluated for the quality score, weighed, and distributed in a completely randomized design with three incubation temperatures (37.8, 38.5, and 39.5°C) and two ambient temperatures (stress and thermoneutral). At 10, 20, 30, and 40 days they were weighed to determine the live weight (g) and weight gain(g). To collect the duodenum and determine morphometric parameters, we euthanized four quails of each treatment. The data were analyzed, and the differences between the means determined by the Tukey test at 5%. The incubation temperature of 39.5°C provided lower hatching rate and the live weight at birth; however, from the 10th day of age, increased live weight, weight gain, and positively influenced the morphological parameters of the duodenal mucosa in situations of chronic stress. RESUMO Objetivou-se avaliar os efeitos de diferentes temperaturas de incubação sobre as variáveis de incubação, desempenho e morfometria da mucosa duodenal de codornas japonesas (Coturnix coturnix japonica) submetidas ao estresse térmico crônico por calor após eclosão. Foram distribuídos 540 ovos em três incubadoras, com temperatura de 37,8°C e umidade 60%. A partir do sexto dia de incubação até a eclosão, as temperaturas foram ajustadas para 37,8°C, 38,5°C e 39,5°C. Após a eclosão, as codornas foram avaliadas quanto ao escore de qualidade, pesadas e distribuídas em um delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, com três temperaturas de incubação (37,8ºC, 38,5ºC e 39,5°C) e duas temperaturas ambientes (estresse e termoneutro). Aos 10, 20, 30 e 40 dias, foram pesadas para determinar o peso vivo (g) e o ganho de peso(g). Quatro codornas de cada tratamento foram eutanasiadas para coleta do duodeno, para determinar os parâmetros morfométricos. Os dados foram analisados e as diferenças entre as médias foram determinadas pelo teste de Tukey a 5%. A temperatura de incubação de 39,5°C proporcionou menor taxa de eclosão e menor peso vivo ao nascer, entretanto, a partir do 10° dia de idade, essa temperatura aumentou o peso vivo, o ganho de peso e influenciou positivamente os parâmetros morfológicos da mucosa duodenal em situações de estresse crônico.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o potencial efeito in vitro de extratos de própolis apícola amazônica sobre o crescimento de Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. manihotis, agente causal da bacteriose da mandioca. As amostras de própolis foram coletadas em apiários com colmeias habitadas por abelhas Apis mellifera L. (africanizadas) nos municípios de Santa Izabel e Curuçá, no estado do Pará. Os extratos foram obtidos a partir de maceração estática por 24 h com os solventes hexano, acetato de etila e etanol 80%. Os perfis fenólicos das amostras foram obtidos através de Cromatografia Líquida de Alta Eficiência/Detecção de Arranjo de Diodos/Espectrometria de Massas com Ionização Electrospray (HPLC/DAD/ESI-EM). A atividade antibacteriana foi verificada com os extratos nas concentrações de 0,1; 0,2; 0,3 e 0,4%. A análise química revelou a presença do kaempferol na amostra de Santa Izabel-PA, do ácido gálico na amostra de Curuçá-PA, e do 3,4-dihidroxibenzoico em ambas amostras. The objective of this study was to evaluate the hepatoprotective effect of the honey bee Apis mellifera ethanolic extract of the red propolis, obtained in four municipalities of the Rio Grande do Norte semi-arid region, through an in vitro evaluation of the antineoplastic potential in human hepatic carcinoma (HepG2) and normal cell lines (L929), and from the comet assay in hepatic cell lines (ZF-L hepatocytes) to evaluate the genoprotective potential of the extract. The hepatoprotective effect was also evaluated in vivo by the induction of chronic experimental hepatic lesions in rodents (Rattus norvegicus Berkenhout, 1769), Wistar line, by intraperitoneal administration of thioacetamide (TAA) at the dose of 0.2g/kg. The animals were distributed in the following experimental groups: G1 (control), G2 (treated with 500mg/kg ethanolic extract of propolis), G3 (treated with 500mg/kg of ethanolic extract and TAA) and G4 (treated with TAA). All rats were submitted to serum biochemical, macroscopic, histological and stereological biochemical exams of the liver. It was verified the genoprotective effect of red propolis since the mean damages promoted to DNA in cells tested with the extract were significantly lower than the mean of the positive control damage (hydrogen peroxide). The red propolis extract did not present cytotoxic activity to the tumor cells of human liver cancer, as well as to normal ones. The absence of cytotoxicity in normal cells may indicate safety in the use of the propolis extract. The results of the serum biochemical evaluation showed that the serum levels of the aminotransferase enzymes (AST) did not differ significantly between G1, G2 and G3 when compared to each other. G4 showed significant increase in levels compared to the other groups, indicating that the administration of the extract did not cause liver toxicity, as well as exerted hepatoprotective effect against the hepatic damage induced by TAA. The G3 and G4 animals developed cirrhosis, but in G3 the livers were characterized by the presence of small regenerative nodules and level with the surface of the organ, whereas in G4 the livers showed large regenerative nodules. The livers of the G1 and G2 animals presented normal histological appearance, whereas the livers of the G3 animals showed regenerative nodules surrounded by thin septa of connective tissue, and in G4 the regenerative nodules were surrounded by thick septa fibrous connective tissue. The analysis of the hepatic tissues by means of stereology showed that there was no statistical difference between the percentage of hepatocytes, sinusoids, and collagens in G1 and G2. In G3 the percentage of hepatocytes, sinusoids, and collagen did not differ significantly from the other groups. It was concluded that the ethanolic extract of the red propolis exerted a hepatoprotective effect, because it promoted in vitro reduction of the damage to the DNA of liver cells, antineoplastic activity in human hepatocellular carcinoma cell line (HepG2) and did not exert cytotoxic effect in normal cells or was able to reduce liver enzyme activity and the severity of cirrhosis induced by TAA in vivo. RESUMO: Este estudo objetivou avaliar o efeito hepatoprotetor do extrato etanólico da própolis vermelha da abelha Apis mellifera, obtido em quatro municípios do semiárido do Rio Grande do Norte, mediante avaliação in vitro do potencial antineoplásico em linhagens de células de carcinoma hepático humano (HepG2) e em linhagens de células normais (L929), além do ensaio cometa em linhagens de células hepáticas (hepatócitos ZF-L) para avaliar o potencial genoprotetor do extrato. O efeito hepatoprotetor também foi avaliado in vivo através da indução de lesões hepática experimental crônica em roedores da espécie Rattus norvegicus (Berkenhout, 1769), linhagem Wistar, pela administração intraperitoneal de tioacetamida (TAA) na dose de 0,2g/kg. Os animais foram distribuídos nos seguintes grupos experimentais: G1 (controle), G2 (tratados com 500mg/kg de extrato etanólico da própolis), G3 (tratados com 500mg/kg de extrato etanólico e TAA) e G4 (tratados com TAA). Todos os ratos foram submetidos aos exames bioquímico sérico, anatomopatológico macroscópico, histológico e esteriológico do fígado. Foi constatado o efeito genoprotetor da própolis vermelha uma vez que as médias dos danos promovidos ao DNA em células testadas com o extrato foram significativamente inferiores à média dos danos do controle positivo (peróxido de hidrogênio). O extrato da própolis vermelha não apresentou atividade citotóxica para células tumorais de câncer de fígado humano, bem como para normais. A ausência de citotoxicidade em células normais, tal como constatado, pode indicar segurança no uso do extrato da própolis. Os resultados da avaliação bioquímica sérica demonstraram que os níveis séricos das enzimas aminotransferase (AST) não diferiram significativamente entre G1, G2 e G3, quando comparadas entre si. No G4 houve aumento significativo dos níveis em relação aos demais grupos, indicando que a administração do extrato não causou toxicidade hepática, bem como exerceu efeito hepatoprotetor frente ao dano hepático induzido pela TAA. Os animais dos G3 e G4 desenvolveram cirrose, porém no G3 os fígados caracterizaram-se pela presença de pequenos nódulos regenerativos e nivelados com a superfície do órgão, enquanto que no G4 os fígados apresentaram grandes nódulos regenerativos. Os fígados dos animais G1 e G2 apresentaram aspecto histológico normal, enquanto que os fígados dos animais do G3 apresentaram nódulos regenerativos circundados por finos septos de tecido conjuntivo, e nos do G4 os nódulos regenerativos foram circundados por espessos septos de tecido conjuntivo fibroso. A análise dos tecidos hepáticos por meio de estereologia mostrou que não houve diferença estatística entre o percentual de hepatócitos, sinusoides e colágenos nos G1 e G2. No G3 o percentual de hepatócitos, sinusoides e colágeno não diferiu significativamente dos demais grupos. Concluiu-se que o extrato etanólico da própolis vermelha exerceu efeito genoprotetor, por promover in vitro redução do dano ao DNA de células hepáticas, atividade antineoplásica em linhagem celular de carcinoma hepatocelular humano (HepG2) e não exerceu efeito citotóxico em células normais ou efeito hepatoprotetor in vivo com diminuição da gravidade da cirrose induzida por TAA.

Spinal cord injury is a devastating condition that leads to significant disabilities. The treatment for this problem is a challenge in neuroscience, and it is necessary to combine different strategies to obtain functional recovery outcomes. There are many herbal natural products, such as Croton blanchetianus Baill (CB) essential oil, a Brazilian semi-arid bush with neuroprotective substances tested in regeneration processes and synaptic plasticity. Thus, this study analyzed the cellular plasticity of spinal cord neurons and glial cells in the presence of sciatic nerve-conditioned medium (SNCM) before the addition of CB essential oil. Cell morphology was assessed over 96 hours, and immunocytochemistry analyses were conducted for GFAP, GAP-43 and NeuN. Photomicrographs were made by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Morphological analysis showed evident trophic development in the groups that received CB essential oil (P>0.000), immunoreactivity for GFAP, GAP-43 and NeuN and the plasticity of these cells were confirmed by SEM. This pioneer study about the plasticity of spinal cord neurons and glial cells opens new possibilities and techniques with essential oils for cell therapy in the presence of SNCM, which promoted neuroprotective action. La lesión de la médula espinal es una condición devastadora que conduce a discapacidades importantes. El tratamiento de este problema es un desafío para la neurociencia, y es necesario combinar diferentes estrategias para obtener resultados de recuperación funcional. Hay muchos productos herbales naturales, como el aceite esencial de Croton blanchetianus Baill (CB), un arbusto del semiárido brasileño con sustancias neuroprotectoras probadas en procesos de regeneración y plasticidad sináptica. Por lo tanto, este estudio analizó la plasticidad celular de las neuronas de la médula espinal y las células gliales en presencia de medio del nervio ciático acondicionado (SNCM) antes de la adición del aceite esencial CB. Se evaluó la morfología celular durante 96 horas y se realizaron análisis de inmunocitoquímica para GFAP, GAP-43 y NeuN. Las fotomicrografías se realizaron mediante microscopía electrónica de barrido (SEM). El análisis morfológico mostró un evidente desarrollo trófico en los grupos que recibieron aceite esencial CB (P> 0,000), inmunorreactividad para GFAP, GAP-43 y NeuN y la plasticidad de estas células fue confirmada por SEM. Este estudio pionero sobre la plasticidad de las neuronas en la médula espinal y las células gliales abre nuevas posibilidades y técnicas con aceites esenciales para terapia celular en presencia de SNCM, que promovió la acción neuroprotectora. Background : Histomoniasis is a disease caused by Histomonas meleagridis , a flagellated protozoan that can cause severe necrotizing hepatitis and typhlitis in several bird species. The disease has a cosmopolitan distribution. In experimental infection, peacocks ( Pavo spp.) showed susceptibility to histomoniasis, however there are few reports on natural histomoniasis in this species. In northeastern Brazil, reports about its occurrence in avian species are scarce and nonexistent in peacocks. Therefore, this report aims to describe the epidemiological and clinicopathological aspects of a histomoniasis case in a peacock ( Pavo cristatus ) in the Brazilian semiarid region. Case : A 3-month-old male peacock with a history of apathy and anorexia was attended in the Veterinary Hospital of the Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Arido (UFERSA), Mossoro, RN, Brazil. The animal was raised extensively in a farm without basic sanitary measures, also with a history of living with animals of different species. After clinical examination, in which intense apathy and weight loss were confirmed, the bird was submitted to emergency therapeutic measures, however there was no clinical improvement and the bird died. At necropsy, intense diffuse bilateral necrotizing typhlitis and multifocal to coalescent necrotizing hepatitis were observed. Fragments of the organs were collected in 10% formaldehyde buffered with phosphate-saline buffer for histopathological analysis and cecal content were collected for microbiological analysis. Histopathology of the cecum revealed transmural necrotizing typhlitis associated with myriads of trophozoites morphologically compatible with Histomonas meleagridis . The same microorganisms observed in association with necrotizing hepatitis lesions, which allowed the diagnosis of histomoniasis. Also, the bacterium Pantoea agglomerans was isolated from the cecal content. Discussion : The macroscopic and microscopic findings allowed the diagnosis and the first recording of histomoniasis in peacock in the semi-arid region of Rio Grande do Norte. The bird was raised in an extensive breeding and without sanitary management, such as the use of anthelmintics, which may favor infection by the nematode Heterakis gallinarum , that’ transmits the protozoan Histomonas meleagridis . The contamination, which begins by the orofecal route, happens through the ingestion of eggs of the nematode contaminated with H. meleagridis that pass through the gastrointestinal tract, reaching the ceca and causing intense lesions in the organ, such as the bilateral transmural typhlitis that we observed in this case. From ceca, the protozoan has access to the bloodstream and reaches the liver, where it causes necrotic hepatitis, also present in the peacock. Both cecal and hepatic lesions were associated with myriads of microorganisms morphologically compatible with H. meleagridis , which allowed the diagnosis of the disease. The challenge in diagnosing this disease occurs mainly due to nonspecific clinical signs, such as apathy and weight loss, the only signs reported by the breeder and observed in this peacock. Confirmation of the occurrence of histomoniasis in any region is important to establish the disease among the differential diagnoses for the species, as in this case. Since this is the first report of peacock histomoniasis in the semi-arid region of Rio Grande do Norte, it is evident the need to consider the disease among possible diagnoses in cases of nonspecific symptoms and it also demonstrates the need to implement control and prophylaxis measures in peacock breeding aiming to avoid losses of birds and economic losses to the breeders and to promote quality of life to the animals.

The budgegarigar (Melosittacus undulatus Shaw, 1805) is a bird of the order Psittaciformes and family Psittaculidae. This species is considered the third most popular pet in the world and is frequently seen in veterinary clinics. Among the diseases that can affect these animals, the Psittacidae beak and feather disease (PBFD), or circovirosis, is an infectious disease commonly reported in some regions. This paper aims to describe the case of a budgegarigar presenting generalized aptheria and self-mutilation of limbs due to PBFD and feather-picking disorder in Northeastern Brazil. A budgegarigar was admitted to the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal Rural University of the Semiarid (HOVET-UFERSA) with generalized aptheria. Subsequently, feces were collected and a molecular polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis for PsCV Circovirus was requested. The result was positive, and upon the animal's return to the clinic, it presented right carpometacarpal and tarsometatarsal self-mutilated. Considering that reports of these disorders for psittacidae are scarce in the Northeast, we report the first occurrence of circovirosis and consequent feather-pulling disorder with clinical manifestation of generalized aptheria and self-mutilation of limbs in a budgegarigar in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, which represents a risk for the conservation of wild Psittacidae in this region. El periquito australiano (Melosittacus undulatus Shaw, 1805) es una ave de la orden Psittaciformes y de la familia Psittaculidae. Esta especie es considerada la tercera mascota más popular del mundo, siendo vista con frecuencia en clínicas veterinarias. Entre las enfermedades que pueden afectar a estos animales, la enfermedad del pico y la pluma de aves psiticidas (PBFD), o circovirus, es una enfermedad infecciosa comúnmente reportada en algunas regiones. El objetivo de este artículo es describir el caso de un periquito australiano que presenta apterias generalizadas y automutilación de las extremidades por PBFD y trastorno por extraer las plumas con el pico en el noreste de Brasil. Un periquito australiano que presentaba apterias generalizada fue ingresado en el Hospital Veterinario de la Universidad Federal Rural del Semi-Árido (HOVET-UFERSA). Luego se recogieron las heces y se solicitó un análisis molecular de reacción en cadena de la polimerasa (PCR) para Circovirus PsCV. El resultado fue positivo y cuando el animal regresó a la clínica presentó carpometacarpio derecho y tarsometatarsos automutilados. Teniendo en cuenta que los informes de estas condiciones para las aves psiticidas son escasos en el noreste, se produce la primera aparición de circovirus y el consiguiente trastorno de extraer las plumas con manifestación clínica de apteria generalizada y automutilación de las extremidades en un periquito australiano para el estado de Rio Grande do Norte, lo que representa un riesgo para la conservación para las aves psiticidas de esta region. O objetivo desse trabalho é descrever o caso de um periquito-australiano apresentando apteria generalizada e automutilação de membros decorrente de PBFD e transtorno de arrancamento de penas no Nordeste do Brasil. Deu entrada no Hospital Veterinário da Universidade Federal Rural do Semiárido (HOVET-UFERSA) um periquito-australiano apresentando apteria generalizada. Em seguida, fezes foram coletadas e foi solicitada uma análise molecular de reação em cadeia da polimerase (PCR) para Circovírus PsCV. O resultado foi positivo, e no retorno do animal à clínica, o mesmo apresentou carpometacarpo direito e tarsometatarsos automutilados. Considerando que os relatos dessas afecções para psitacídeos são escassos no Nordeste, registra-se a primeira ocorrência de circovirose e consequente transtorno de arrancamento de penas com manifestação clínica de apteria generalizada e automutilação de membros em periquito-australiano para o estado do Rio Grande do Norte, o que representa um risco para conservação de psitacídeos silvestres dessa região.

The Argentine black and white tegu (Salvator merianae) is a reptile belonging to the family Teiidae. Compared with other families, teiids are morphologically similar. However, their sizes vary considerably, with S. merianae being the largest endemic lizard in South America. The characteristics, habitat, and habits of S. merianae need to be investigated, to provide adequate ex situ adaptation opportunities and avoid accidents in the pet industry. One advancing complementary therapy is the use of ozone, which has potent antimicrobial action when applied topically, due to the oxidizing and healing effects resulting from the stimulation of tissue cell proliferation and remodeling. To generate information concerning ozone therapy, the treatment of stomatitis caused by Portland cement in an Argentine black and white tegu using ozonized water as a complementary therapy is reported. Fluid and antibiotic therapies (enrofloxacin, butorphanol, meloxicam, and sucralfate) were introduced, along with the daily rinsing of the oral cavity with freshly prepared ozonized water. No toxic effects relating to ozone use were observed, and its topical use as a complementary therapy proved to be low cost and highly efficient. These findings demonstrate the need to obtain knowledge concerning this therapy and promote its use in wild animals. El tegu blanco y negro (Salvator merianae) es un reptil perteneciente a la familia Teiidae. En comparación con otras familias, los teiids son morfológicamente similares. Sin embargo, sus tamaños varían considerablemente, siendo S. merianae el lagarto endémico más grande de América del Sur. Es necesario investigar las características, el hábitat y los hábitos de S. merianae para brindar oportunidades adecuadas de adaptación ex-situ y evitar accidentes en la industria de las mascotas. Una terapia complementaria avanzada es el uso de ozono, que tiene una potente acción antimicrobiana cuando se aplica tópicamente, debido a los efectos oxidantes y curativos que resultan de la estimulación de la proliferación y remodelación de las células tisulares. Para generar información sobre ozonoterapia, se reporta el tratamiento de la estomatitis por cemento Portland en un tegu utilizando agua ozonizada como terapia complementaria. Se introdujeron terapias con líquidos y antibióticos (enrofloxacina, butorfanol, meloxicam y sucralfato), junto con el enjuague diario de la cavidad oral con agua ozonizada recién preparada. No se observaron efectos tóxicos relacionados con el uso de ozono y su uso tópico como terapia complementaria resultó ser de bajo costo y altamente eficiente. Estos hallazgos demuestran la necesidad de obtener conocimientos sobre esta terapia y promover su uso en animales salvajes. O teiú-comum (Salvator merianae) é um réptil pertencente à família Teiidae. Comparados com outras famílias, os teídeos são morfologicamente semelhantes. No entanto, seus tamanhos variam consideravelmente, sendo S. merianae o maior lagarto endêmico da América do Sul. As características, habitat e hábitos de S. merianae precisam ser investigados, para fornecer oportunidades adequadas de adaptação ex-situ e evitar acidentes na indústria pet. Uma terapia complementar em avanço é o uso do ozônio, que possui potente ação antimicrobiana quando aplicado topicamente, devido aos efeitos oxidantes e cicatrizantes decorrentes da estimulação da proliferação e remodelação celular tecidual. Para o desenvolvimento de informações sobre a ozonioterapia, é relatado o tratamento da estomatite causada pelo cimento Portland em um teiú utilizando água ozonizada como terapia complementar. Fluidos e antibióticos (enrofloxacina, butorfanol, meloxicam e sucralfato) foram introduzidos, juntamente com o enxágue diário da cavidade oral com água ozonizada recém-preparada. Não foram observados efeitos tóxicos relacionados ao uso do ozônio, e seu uso tópico como terapia complementar mostrou-se de baixo custo e altamente eficiente. Esses achados demonstram a necessidade de se obter conhecimentos sobre essa terapia e promover seu uso em animais silvestres.

The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of Trypanosoma vivax infection on the shape of the lactation curve and the milk quality of dairy goats experimentally infected with T. vivax. In total, twenty Saanen goats, aged 26-30 months and the same number of calving (two calvings), were divided into two experimental groups: an infected group, consisting of ten goats intravenously infected with 0.5 ml of blood containing approximately 1.25 × 10(5) trypomastigotes of T. vivax and ten uninfected animals as the control group. Clinical tests and hematocrit, parasitemia, and serum biochemistry evaluations were performed on all of the goats. Milk production was measured daily for 152 days by hand milking the goats and weighing the milk. Every seven days, physiochemical analyses were performed to evaluate the milk. Wood's nonlinear model was used to analyze the lactation curve parameters. The infected goats had high levels of parasitemia and hyperthermia, significantly reduced hematocrit, serum total protein, albumin, and glucose levels and increased cholesterol and urea concentrations. Wood's model indicated that the milk production of goats in the infected group declined sharply over a short period of time and produced a flattened yield curve and significant difference (P 0.05) in the rate of increase of peak milk production, rate of decrease of milk production after the peak, day of peak milk production, and maximum peak milk production compared with that of the control group. Trypanosomiasis also affected the persistency of lactation, which was significantly reduced in goats in the infected group. In addition, the physico-chemical properties of the milk, including the fat content, defatted dry extracts (DDE) and protein content, decreased significantly (P 0.05) in the goats in the infected group compared with those in the control group. The T. vivax-infected goats showed reduction in milk production, persistence of lactation, and fat levels, the defatted dry extract (DDE) content, and protein, changing the quality of milk.

The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of anti Trypanosoma vivax antibodies and the possible risk factors associated with the infection in cattle in Rio Grande do Norte, Northeastern Brazil, through a cross-sectional epidemiological study, with non-probabilistic convenience sampling. A total of 467 cattle’s serum samples were analyzed by indirect immunofluorescence. Forty-two samples tested positive for Trypanosoma vivax IgG antibodies, corresponding to the prevalence of 9%. Risk factors influencing the occurrence of trypanosomiasis were milk exploration, raising of European breeds, productivity category: lactation cow, purchase of new cattle, foraging habits near ponds and rivers, and the presence of mechanical vectors. So, high prevalence in beef animals (59.5%), females (95.2%), European breed (88.1%), lactating cows (85.7%), pasture at banks of dams and rivers (95.2%), in addition to the presence of mechanical vectors (81%) and acquisition of animals (88.1%), indicates the expansion of trypanosomiasis in Northeastern semi-arid region, and the information obtained may explain the epidemiological factors that determine the occurrence of trypanosomiasis by T. vivax in this region.

Acupuncture is a therapy of the traditional Chinese medicine technique, which over the years has been widespread in the West. Defined as a needle-point treatment technique (acupoints), exactly preconfigured in the body to produce a specific physiological reaction to restore the balance between the function of conflicting states and homeostasis, alternating states of energy and thus maintain the ideal organ and body organization. Thus, the objective of this study was to map and describe the main points of acupuncture in the species Boa constrictor , and their indications to promote the balance of this species. The unprecedented result of the mapping was the discovery of specific acupoints with individual location indications without distribution in specific meridians and dispersedly distributed in the body. Resumo A acupuntura é uma técnica terapêutica da Medicina Tradicional Chinesa, que ao longo dos anos tem sido muito difundida no Ocidente. Definida como uma técnica de tratamento com inserção de agulhas em pontos (acupontos) exatamente pré-estabelecidos sobre o organismo, para produzir uma reação fisiológica específica com o intuito de restabelecer o equilíbrio entre estados contraditórios de função e a homeostase, alternando os estados de energia e com isto mantendo a organização do órgão e do organismo. Com isso, o objetivo do presente trabalho foi mapear e descrever os principais pontos de acupuntura nas espécies Boa constrictore suas indicações para promover o equilíbrio dessa espécie. O resultado inédito do mapeamento foi à descoberta de pontos de acupuntura específicos com indicações de localização individuais sem distribuição em meridianos específicos e dispersamente distribuídos no corpo.

A Própolis de abelhas africanizadas (Apis mellifera L.) é um produto da colmeia, elaborado a partir de exsudações de resinas que as abelhas recolhem de determinadas plantas. A composição química da própolis é complexa e relacionada à diversidade vegetal encontrada em torno da colmeia. Estudos recentes demonstram que a própolis possui uma série de propriedades biológicas, essas propriedades têm feito da própolis uma importante matéria-prima para as indústrias farmacêutica, alimentícia e de cosméticos. O estudo dessas propriedades é, portanto, necessário, a fim de se obter um produto com alto padrão de qualidade e valor agregado. Este trabalho tem como objetivo a avaliação do efeito de sete diferentes extratos alcoólicos da própolis (EAP) apícola Potiguar no desenvolvimento de quatro microrganismos de importância veterinária. As colmeias habitadas com enxames de abelhas africanizadas (Apis mellifera L.) selecionados para coleta da própolis estavam organizadas em apiários, distribuídos em região de vegetação distinta no estado do Rio Grande do Norte, Brasil. As coletas de material no campo ocorreram no período dos meses de outubro a dezembro de 2013, a obtenção dos extratos e os ensaios do potencial antibiótico ocorreram durante o ano de 2014. Foi identificado que os EAP 1, 6 e 7 foram ativos nos quatro microrganismos testados, e os EAP 3 e 4 não demonstraram-se ativos para nenhum microrganismo. Os resultados encontrados evidenciam a superioridade da própolis vermelha do mangue Potiguar quando comparados aos resultados citados em outros estudos para os mesmos microrganismos.Antibiotic potential of the Potiguar bee propolis on the bacteria of veterinary importanceAbstract: Propolis Africanized bees (Apis mellifera L.) is a product of the bee hive, elaborated based on exudates resins that bees collect from certain plants. The chemical composition of propolis is complex and related to plant diversity found around the bee hive. Recent studies have shown that propolis has a number of biological properties, these properties have made from propolis an important raw material for the pharmaceutical, food and cosmetic industries. The study of the properties is therefore necessary in order to obtain a product with a high standard of quality and value. This study aims to evaluate seven different alcoholic extracts of propolis (AEP), of Potiguar honey bees, in the development of four microorganisms of great veterinary importance. The bee hives inhabited by swarms of Africanized bees (Apis mellifera L.) selected for the collection of propolis were organized in apiary distributed in different vegetation region in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. The material collected in the field occurred in the period from October to December 2013, obtaining the extracts and antibiotic potential of the trials took place during the year 2014. It was identified that the EAP 1, 6 and 7 were active in all four tested microorganisms, and the EAP 3 and 4 are not demonstrated to be active for any microorganism. The results show the superiority of red propolis Potiguar of mangrove when compared to the results cited in other studies for the same microorganisms.

Foram avaliados os efeitos da centrifugação associada ao uso de dois diluentes na manutenção da viabilidade espermática em tatus-peba (Euphractus sexcinctus) ao longo do teste de termorresistência (TTR). Amostras de sêmen (n=12), oriundas de 04 machos adultos coletados por eletroejaculação, foram divididas em quatro alíquotas, sendo duas imediatamente diluídas em Tris ou água de coco em pó (ACP-119(r)), e as outras duas centrifugadas (800g10min-1) previamente à diluição. As amostras foram incubadas a 34°C por 3h, e os parâmetros seminais avaliados em intervalos de 1h. Em termos gerais, verificou-se uma redução da viscosidade espermática imediata à diluição em ambos os diluentes, independente do uso da centrifugação. Aos 60 minutos, verificou-se uma redução dos parâmetros avaliados (P0,05). Ainda, verificou-se um efeito deletério da centrifugação sobre a qualidade do sêmen de tatus-peba durante todo o teste de termorresistência. Nas condições do presente estudo, conclui-se que o diluente Tris mostrou-se superior ao ACP-119(r) para a manutenção da viabilidade do sêmen de tatus-peba, sendo desnecessária a realização de centrifugação prévia à diluição. The effects of the centrifugation associated to the use of two extenders on the viability of six-banded armadillo's (Euphractus sexcinctus) sperm were evaluated during a thermo resistance test (TRT). Semen samples (n=12) derived from 04 stud males collected by electroejaculation were divided in four aliquots; two of that were immediately diluted in Tris or powdered coconut water (ACP-119(r)); the two others were centrifuged (800g10min-1) prior to the dilution. Samples were incubated at 34ºC per 3h, and the semen parameters were evaluated at each hour. Os lipomas infiltrativos diferenciam-se dos nao infiltrativos por invadirem tecidos adjacentes como tendoes, musculos, capsulas articulares e ossos. Objetivou-se neste estudo relatar o primeiro caso de lipoma em carater infiltrativo espontâneo em um Cavia porcellus femea, com idade aproximada de 8 anos e peso de 950g. Ao exame clinico observou-se uma massa subcutânea que se estendia por sobre as costelas na regiao toracoabdominal esquerda pesando 185g (correspondente a 19,47% do seu peso corporeo), coloracao branca/amarelada, aspecto gorduroso, macio a palpacao e com sinais de aderencia. A puncao aspirativa por agulha fina evidenciou esfregacos nao corados de aspecto umido com goticulas brilhantes que nao se secavam completamente ao ar, compativel com tecido gorduroso. O diagnostico definitivo para lipoma foi confirmado pelo histopatologico, que revelou adipocitos bem diferenciados de diâmetros irregulares, alguns mal circunscritos e uma area com infiltracao de adipocitos entre as fibras muculares. Mostrando tratar-se de uma variante infiltrativa que e bastante raro em algumas especies. Conclui-se que o Cavia porcellus e uma especie que pode desenvolver lipomas de carater infiltrativo, devendo-se suspeitar de sua presenca sempre que existir massas subcutâneas bem circunscritas e aderidas.

O objetivo deste estudo foi demonstrar os efeitos do tratamento tópico do jucá (Caesalpinia ferrea) em feridas cutâneas. Quinze caprinos machos sem raça definida foram divididos em 3 grupos de acordo com o pós-cirúrgico (7º, 14º e 21º dias). As feridas experimentais foram tratadas com a pomada composta pela casca da Caesalpinia ferrea em pó misturada com a vaselina estéril e as do grupo controle apenas com a vaselina esterilizada. A aplicação diária da pomada e da vaselina estéril foi realizada sobre ferida circular padronizada de 16 cm² de área na região torácica de cada animal. As avaliações das feridas foram feitas do ponto de vista clínico, bacteriológico, morfométrico e histopatológico nos períodos pré-determinados (7º, 14º e 21º dias). Morfometricamente, as feridas do controle apresentaram áreas cirúrgicas menores e grau de contração maior que as do grupo tratado, entretanto, histologicamente, houve completa epitelização das feridas tratadas no 21º dia, enquanto que as feridas do grupo controle necessitavam de mais tempo para resolução do processo cicatricial. No exame microbiológico realizado no momento da produção da ferida, não se observou crescimento bacteriano e no momento das biópsias, identificou-se a presença de bactérias da família Enterobacteriaceae e Staphylococcus aureus, sendo que a partir do 14º dia observou-se Staphylococcus aureus apenas no grupo controle. A utilização tópica da pomada de Caesalpinia ferrea apresentou eficiência significativa no auxílio da reparação cicatricial de feridas cutâneas de caprinos. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the effects of the topical treatment with Brazilian ironwood (Caesalpinia ferrea) on cutaneous wounds. Fifteen male mongrel goats were divided into 3 groups according to the postoperative period ((7th, 14th and 21st days). The experimental wounds were treated with an ointment composed of Brazilian wood powder bark mixed with sterile vaseline, whereas controls were only treated with sterile Vaseline. The ointment and the sterile vaselin were daily applied on a standardized circular wound (16 cm² area) in the thoracic region of each animal. Clinical, bacteriological, morphometric and histopathological evaluations were performed in the wounds at predetermined periods (7th, 14th and 21st postoperative days). Morphometrically, control wounds had smaller surgical areas and greater degree of contraction than those from the treated group. However, histologically, there was a complete epithelialization of the treated wounds on the 21st day, whereas control wounds required longer time for healing. In the microbiological evaluation performed at the moment of wound production, there was no bacterial growth. During biopsies, Enterobacteriaceae bacteria and Staphylococcus aureus were identified; from the 14th day, the latter was only observed in the control group. The topical use of Caesalpinia ferrea ointment was significantly efficient to help healing cutaneous wounds in goats.

The aim of this study is to describe the characteristics of the semen from six-banded armadillos (Euphractus sexcinctus) collected by electroejaculation. Six mature males were physically restrained and electroejaculated twice for the collection of semen. Semen collected was immediately evaluated for appearance, volume, pH, sperm motility, vigor, morphology, percentage of live sperm and functional membrane integrity by light microscopy. Semen was obtained from all (100%) twelve attempts conducted for electroejaculation. Armadillos' semen had a white-translucent appearance, and great viscosity. Mean values obtained in analysis of the semen were: 353+/-86 microl for volume, 9 for pH, 45+/-14 x 10(6)sperm/ml for concentration, 61+/-7% motile sperm with 2+/-0.2 for vigor, 55+/-7% live sperm, 86+/-2% morphologic normal sperm, and 46+/-6% functional membrane integrity. In conclusion, semen from six-banded armadillos can be efficiently obtained by electroejaculation. The characteristics of semen collected by electroejaculation in six-banded armadillos provide background information that may be useful for assisted breeding programs in the members of the Xenarthra family.

Contents This study describes the morphometry of the testicles of captive coatis (Nasua nasua) and verifies the existence of correlations between the testicles and the semen producing characteristics. Twelve ejaculates were obtained from five adult specimens that were restraint by anaesthesia. Visual and morphometric evaluation of the external genitalia was performed by using a caliper. The animals presented a scrotal circumference of 9.4 ± 0.7 cm. The right testicle presented a width of 1.7 ± 0.2 cm, length of 2.6 ± 0.2 cm and volume of 3.9 ± 1.1 cm3. The left testicle presented a width of 1.7 ± 0.1 cm, length of 2.5 ± 0.3 cm and volume of 3.6 ± 0.7 cm3. No significant correlations were obtained between the scrotal circumference or total testicular volume and the semen producing characteristics (volume and sperm concentration). For the first time in this field, this study presents an important contribution to the knowledge of the reproductive morphophysiology of coatis.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a atividade antibacteriana in vitro e cicatrizante do óleo de buriti (M. flexuosa) em feridas realizadas em ratos (Rattus norvegicus albinus). Para a avaliação antibacteriana in vitro, foram utilizados cinco patógenos bacterianos incluindo espécies gram-positivas e espécies gram-negativas mediante o uso do método de difusão em ágar. Para a avaliação da atividade cicatrizante, foram utilizados 40 ratos da linhagem Wistar, divididos em dois grupos: o grupo I, composto por 20 ratos com feridas cutâneas, tratados com aplicação tópica do creme base com 10% de óleo de buriti, e o grupo II, controle, com o mesmo número de animais que receberam a aplicação tópica do creme base. A aplicação do produto foi realizada em feridas padronizadas, circulares de 1cm de diâmetro na região dorsolombar. As avaliações clínica, morfométrica e histopatológica das feridas foram realizadas no 3°, 7°, 14° e 21° dias. Em relação à avaliação da atividade antibacteriana, os resultados mostraram que houve inibição do crescimento bacteriano em quatro dos cinco patógenos testados. Em relação à área da ferida, foi observada redução significativa da área no 14o dia e maior percentual de contração das feridas do grupo tratado em relação ao controle. No décimo quarto dia, as feridas tratadas com o óleo do buriti apresentavam aumento significativo na contagem de fibroblastos e fibras colágenas, além de completo processo de reepitelização, enquanto o grupo controle necessitava de mais tempo para resolução do processo cicatricial. The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro antimicrobial activity and wound healing effect of buriti oil (M. flexuosa) in rats. To evaluate the in vitro antimicrobial activity, five species of bacteria, including both gram-negative and gram-positive, were tested by the agar diffusion method. To assess the wound healing effect, 40 rats of Wistar lineage were clustered into two groups: G1, composed by 20 rats with cutaneous wounds and treated using topic administration of basic cream containing 10% of buriti oil; and G2 or control group, composed by 20 rats with cutaneous wounds and treated using topic administration of basic cream without any buriti oil. The cream administration was performed on circular wounds of 1 cm area in the lumbodorsal region. Clinical, histopathologic and morphometric evaluations of the wounds were done in 3rd, 7th, 14th and 21th days. Four from five bacteria species tested had growing inhibition, which demonstrates the antimicrobial potential of buriti oil. A significant reduction on the wound area with contraction of the edges was found for G1 in the 14th day. On this same day, the wounds treated using buriti oil showed an increase in the fibroblasts and collagen fibers countings and complete reephitelialization, characteristics not demonstrated by G2.

The objective was to compare the effects of ketamine-xylazine or tiletamine-zolazepam combinations as anesthetic protocols for captive coatis (Nasua nasua) for semen collection by electroejaculation. Five mature male coatis were physically restrained and then anesthetized by im injections of ketamine (10mg/kg) plus xylazine (1mg/kg) or a tiletamine-zolazepam combination (8 mg/kg). For the two combinations, additional quarter-doses of ketamine or the tiletamine-zolazepam combination were administered when necessary. Semen was collected by electroejaculation and immediately evaluated for color, volume, pH, sperm motility, vigor, morphology, acrosomal integrity, and percentage of live cells. Overall, collection of nine ejaculates was attempted from five animals for each treatment. Regardless of the anesthetic combination, all animals developed an erection during each attempt to collect semen. Background : Wild animals bred in captivity may develop steatosis due to unbalanced dietary intake and obesity caused by sedentary behaviour. In some rural areas, six-banded armadillos are raised in captivity inside some metal barrels, with restricted space, and are often overfeed. After getting fattening, armadillos they are slaughtered and used as food. The unfavorable conditions may somehow contribute to likely underlie the development of many diseases, among them we can including hepatic steatosis. The present report aims to describe the pathological fndings of hepatic lipidosis in banded armadillos ( Euphractus sexcinctus ), bred in captivity. Case : The animals were three female adult six-banded armadillos ( Euphractus sexcinctus ), caught in the native forest of the city of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil and raised in domestic environment in a small enclosure and fed with human food leftovers. After eight months kept in these conditions armadillos had severe obesity and then were donated to the city zoo, where they were quarantined and presented clinical symptoms of anorexia for two weeks, weight loss and exhaustion. After being found dead during daily inspection carried out by the veterinarian zoo, the six-banded armadillos were sent to the Animal Pathology Laboratory of Federal Rural University of the Semi-Arid (UFERSA) for pathological examination. The animals presented with a history of anorexia were extremely obese and the autopsy detected had extensive deposits of fat in the carcass and liver. Histopathologically, the liver cells hepatocytes showed marked intracytoplasmic vacuolization and with peripheral displacement of the nucleus to the periphery, with and positive staining for lipids using scarlet Sudan III. To our knowledge, this is the frst report of hepatic lipidosis in banded. Discussion : Hepatic lipidosis can be categorized into normal liver and mild, moderate, or severe fatty liver. In severe cases, it is estimated that 80% of the hepatocytes are affected. Therefore, we classifed the hepatic lipidosis of the three studied female six-banded armadillos as severe, since the lipids were deposited diffusely. Based on the severity of the lesions and absence of other fndings, we concluded here that hepatic lipidosis contributed to the cause of the six-banded armadil los death. The weight of the animals in this report may be associated with innapropriate enclosure dimensions and a diet based on human food leftovers. Such diet was reportedly composed of rice, beens, spaghetti, and bread, which are food with high levels of carbohydrate. The armadillos of the Euphractus sexcinctus species usually weigh between 3 and 6 kg and hence, the animals of this report showed twice the normal weight. The occurrence of hepatic lipidosis associated with anorexia triggered by a stressful event such as a change of environment and diet armadillos observed in the present study is in agreement with literature data pointing anorexia in obese animals as a major predisposing factors for the occurrence of hepatic lipidosis by promoting energy restriction, peripheral lipolysis and large intake of fatty acids to the liver. The present study was aimed at investigating the effect of experimental infection by Trypanosoma vivax in different stages of pregnancy, determining the pathogenesis of reproductive failure, and confirming transplacental transmission. We used 12 pregnant ewes distributed into four experimental groups: G1, was formed by three ewes infected with T. vivax in the first third of pregnancy (30 days); G2 comprised three infected ewes in the final third of pregnancy (100 days); G3 and G4 were composed of three non-infected ewes with the same gestational period, respectively. Each ewe of G1 and G2 was inoculated with 1.25 × 105 tripomastigotes. Clinical examination, determination of parasitemia, serum biochemistry (albumin, total protein, glucose, cholesterol, and urea), packed cell volume (PCV), serum progesterone, and pathological examination were performed. Placenta, amniotic fluid, blood and tissues from the fetuses and stillbirths were submitted to PCR. Two ewes of G1 (Ewe 1 and 3) presented severe infection and died in the 34th and 35th days post-infection (dpi), respectively; but both fetuses were recovered during necropsy. In G2, Ewe 5 aborted two fetuses on the 130th day (30 dpi) of pregnancy; and Ewe 6 aborted one fetus in the 140th day (40 dpi) of gestation. Ewes 2 and 4 delivered two weak lambs that died five days after birth. Factors possibly involved with the reproductive failure included high parasitemia, fever, low PCV, body score, serum glucose, total protein, cholesterol, and progesterone. Hepatitis, pericarditis, and encephalitis were observed in the aborted fetuses. The presence of T. vivax DNA in the placenta, amniotic fluid, blood, and tissues from the fetuses confirms the transplacental transmission of the parasite. Histological lesion in the fetuses and placenta also suggest the involvement of the parasite in the etiopathogenesis of reproductive failure in ewes.

Resumo: Esse estudo objetivou avaliar a composição química e potencial terapêutico do extrato hidroalcóolico de geoprópolis produzidas por abelhas Plebeia aff. flavocincta no semiárido do Rio Grande do Norte. Oito amostras (A-H) foram submetidas a quantificação dos teores de fenóis e flavonoides totais e avaliação da atividade antioxidante através do método DPPH (2,2-difenil-1-picril-hidrazilo). Além disso, foram investigadas as atividades antibacteriana, através do método de difusão em ágar, e a cicatrizante, através da indução de feridas cirúrgicas experimentais em Rattus norvegicus Berkenhout, 1769, linhagem Wistar, tratados com creme à base de geoprópolis. Duas amostras (F e G) se destacaram por apresentar altos valores de fenóis e flavonoides totais. A capacidade antioxidante acima de 90% foi observada em cinco amostras. Os extratos foram considerados eficazes no que se refere a atividade antibacteriana, pois das oito amostras, cinco promoveram a formação de halos de inibição ≥9mm para todas as cepas testadas. Duas amostras (D e G) se destacaram em relação as demais por apresentar excelentes resultados, uma vez que, promoveram a formação de halos de inibição para as bactérias Staphylococcus epidermidis e Escherichia coli, superiores estatisticamente aos valores dos antibióticos controles, quando na concentração de 100%. As amostras A e G promoveram, respectivamente, a formação de halos de inibição, que não diferiram significativamente dos halos produzidos pelos antibióticos controles em todas as concentrações testadas para E. coli e Staphylococcus aureus. A análise do processo de cicatrização sob os pontos de vista clínico, macroscópico e histológico permitiu concluir, que o uso do creme à base de geoprópolis apresentou influência positiva na cicatrização de feridas cutâneas experimentais, por promover reação inflamatória menos intensa e fechamento mais rápido das feridas em relação ao grupo controle. Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the chemical composition and therapeutic potential of the hydroalcoholic extract of geopropolis produced by bees Plebeia aff. flavocincta in Rio Grande do Norte semi-arid. Eight samples (A-H) were submitted to the quantification of total phenols and flavonoid content and evaluation of the antioxidant activity by DPPH method (2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl). Additionally, antibacterial activities were investigated by agar diffusion method, and healing process by inducing experimental surgical wounds in Rattus norvegicus Berkenhout, 1769, Wistar line, and treated with the geopropolis-based cream. Two samples (F and G) have stood out by presenting high values of total phenols and flavonoids. The antioxidant capacity of over 90% was observed in five samples. The extracts were considered effective in relation to antibacterial activity since of the eight samples, five promoted the formation of inhibition zones ≥9mm above all strains tested. Two samples (D and G) have stood out over the other for presenting excellent results since it promoted the formation of inhibition zones for Staphylococcus epidermidis and Escherichia coli exceeding statistically to the values of the antibiotic controls when the concentration was 100%. Samples A and G have provided, respectively, that the formation of inhibition zones were not significantly different than the halos produced by antibiotics controls at all concentrations tested for Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The analysis of the healing process from the clinical, macroscopic and histological points of view, allowed to conclude that the use of geopropolis-based cream had a positive influence on the healing of experimental skin wounds by promoting less intense inflammatory reaction and healing faster from wounds in the control group.

Resumo: Este artigo apresenta relatos de sete distintas patologias de origem reprodutiva ainda não descritas em cutias (Dasyprocta aguti Linnaeus, 1758) fêmeas, que afetaram a fertilidade ou resultaram na morte do animal. Descreveu-se a natureza, a localização e a frequência das alterações patológicas macroscópicas e histológicas dos órgãos que compõem o sistema reprodutivo de cutias fêmeas, criadas sob condições de cativeiro no semiárido do Brasil. Foram avaliados através do exame anatomopatológico o aparelho reprodutivo de trinta e nove cutias mortas naturalmente e encaminhadas ao Laboratório de Patologia Veterinária, no período de fevereiro de 2010 a maio de 2015. Destas, constatou-se alterações patológicas no sistema reprodutivo de 10 (25,6 %). No total, 13 alterações foram observadas, sendo que, em alguns animais haviam a coexistência de mais de uma alteração. Assim, as alterações patológicas encontradas foram: endometrite (n=4; 30,8%), piometra (n=3; 23%), retenção de placenta (n=2; 15,4%), maceração fetal (n=1; 7,7%), mumificação fetal (n=1; 7,7%), parto distócico (n=1; 7,7%) e ovários afuncionais (n=1; 7,7%). Abstract: This paper presents seven distinct reports diseases with reproductive origins that are not yet described in females agoutis (Dasyprocta aguti Linnaeus, 1758), affecting fertility or resulted in the animal's death. The nature, location and frequency of macroscopic and histological pathological changes of the organs that compose the reproductive system of female agoutis, created under conditions of captivity in the semiarid region of Brazil, are described in this article. Were evaluated by pathological examination of the reproductive tract of thirty-nine naturally dead agoutis and sent to the Veterinary Pathology Laboratory in February 2010 to May 2015. From these, it was found pathological alterations in the reproductive system of 10 (25.6%). A total of 13 abnormalities were observed, and in some animals had the coexistence of more than one alteration. Thus, the pathological changes were: endometritis (n=4, 30.8%), pyometra (n=3; 23%), retained placenta (n=2; 15.4%), fetal maceration (n=1, 7.7%), fetal mummification (n=1, 7.7%), dystocia (n=1, 7.7%) and afuncionais ovary (n=1, 7.7%).

The objective was to evaluate the in vitro antioxidant, genotoxic, antigenotoxic, and antineoplastic activities of apitoxin produced by the bee Apis mellifera. The antioxidant activity of the apitoxin solution was evaluated using the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrilhydrazyl) method. Genotoxic potential of apitoxin was analyzed by comparing the mean DNA damage indices (idDNA) of L929 strain fibroblasts exposed to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2 - genotoxic substance), distilled water, or apitoxin. The antigenotoxic effect of apitoxin was analyzed by assessing the percentage decrease in H2O2-induced genotoxicity in L929 fibroblasts co-treated with three concentrations of the aqueous apitoxin solution and subjected to comet assay. In vitro antineoplastic activity in human tumor cell lines of prostate adenocarcinoma (PC3), hepatocellular carcinoma (HEPGE2), melanoma (MAD-MB435), and astrocytoma (SNB19), were verified by MTT [3- (4) bromide colorimetric method, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl) -2,5-diphenyltetrazolium]. Apitoxin had no genotoxic effect on L929 cells at concentrations of 30, 10, and 5 µg/mL after 24 hours of exposure. This effect was only evident at 50 µg/mL. Apitoxin promoted a significant reduction in DNA damage index (idDNA) at all concentrations tested. At 30 µg/mL, apitoxin attenuated the genotoxic effects induced by H2O2. Apitoxin also demonstrated in vitro antineoplastic potential, since the cytotoxic effect was observed at concentrations of 50 µg/mL and 25 µg/mL, with significant reduction in viability percentage of PC3 tumor cell lines, HEPGE2, MAD-MB435, and SNB19. The high antioxidant activity associated with the absence of genotoxic effect and the genoprotective and antineoplastic effect demonstrated by apitoxin here provide indications of apitoxin’s therapeutic potential. RESUMO: O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar as atividades antioxidantes, genotóxicas, antigenotóxicas e antineoplásicas in vitro da apitoxina produzida pela abelha Apis mellifera. A atividade antioxidante da solução da apitoxina foi avaliada pelo método DPPH (2,2-difenil-1-picrilhidrazil). O potencial genotóxico da apitoxina foi analisado através dos índices médios de dano ao DNA (idDNA) dos fibroblastos da linhagem L929 expostos à peróxido de hidrogênio (H2O2 - substância genotóxica), água destilada ou apitoxina. O efeito antigenotóxico da apitoxina foi analisado através da avaliação da diminuição percentual na genotoxicidade induzida por H2O2 nos fibroblastos L929 co-tratados com três concentrações da solução aquosa de apitoxina e submetidos ao ensaio cometa. A atividade antineoplásica in vitro em linhagens celulares tumorais humanas de adenocarcinoma da próstata (PC3), carcinoma hepatocelular (HEPGE2), melanoma (MAD-MB435) e astrocitoma (SNB19), foram verificadas pelo método colorimétrico do brometo de MTT [3- (4), 5-dimetiltiazol -2-il) -2,5-difeniltetrazólio]. A apitoxina não teve efeito genotóxico nas células L929 nas concentrações de 30, 10 e 5 µg / mL após 24 horas de exposição. Este efeito foi apenas evidente a 50 µg / mL. A apitoxina promoveu uma redução significativa no índice de danos ao DNA (idDNA) em todas as concentrações testadas. A 30 µg / mL, a apitoxina atenuou os efeitos genotóxicos induzidos por H2O2. A apitoxina também demonstrou potencial antineoplásico in vitro, uma vez que o efeito citotóxico foi observado em concentrações de 50 µg / mL e 25 µg / mL, com redução significativa na porcentagem de viabilidade das linhagens celulares de PC3, HEPGE2, MAD-MB435 e SNB19. A alta atividade antioxidante associada à ausência de efeito genotóxico e o efeito genoprotetor e antineoplásico demonstrado pela apitoxina aqui fornecem indicações do potencial terapêutico da apitoxina.

The yellow passionfruit (Passiflora edulis Sims f. flavicarcarpa Deg.) is important culture in Brazilian Amazon agriculture, especially in the state of Pará. But its cultivation has been suffering the reduction of its areas and productivity due the diseases caused by bacteria, where chemical control, sometimes does not present the expected results. The propolis of Africanized bees (Apis mellifera L.) is an important natural antibiotic for the control of undesirable microorganisms of plants and animals. The present work aimed at the in vitro study of the antibiotic activity of different propolis extracts of Africanized bees from two different locations in the state of Pará in the agent that causes the passionfruit bacterial blight (Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. passiflorae). A factorial analysis of three factors was performed: origin X solvent X concentration. It was verified that the concentrations of 0.5% were statistically superior to the others, with average growth inhibition power of 86%, and the propolis extract from an apiary in Santa Izabel do Pará, Pará, Brazil, obtained in ethanol at 80%, was statistically different and superior for the inhibitory effect of the growth of colony forming units (CFU) of X. axonopodis pv. passiflorae. El maracuyá amarillo (Passiflora edulis Sims f. flavicarcarpa Deg.) es una cultura importante en la agricultura de la Amazonía brasileña, especialmente en el estado de Pará. Pero su cultivo ha sufrido una reducción de sus áreas y productividad debido enfermedades causadas por bacterias, en las que el control químico, en ocasiones, no presenta los resultados esperados. Se ha demostrado que el propóleo de abejas africanizadas (Apis mellifera L.) es un importante antibiótico natural en el control de microorganismos indeseables de plantas y animales. El presente trabajo tuvo como objetivo estudiar in vitro la actividad antibiótica de diferentes extractos de propóleo de abejas africanizadas de dos localizaciones distintas del estado de Pará sobre el agente causante de la mancha bacteriana de la maracuyá (Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. passiflorae). Se realizó un análisis factorial de tres factores: origen X solvente X concentración. Se encontró que las concentraciones de 0.5% fueron estadísticamente superiores a las demás, con un poder inhibidor del crecimiento promedio de 86%, y el extracto de propóleo del apiario de Santa Izabel do Pará, Pará, Brasil, obtenido en etanol al 80%, demostró un efecto inhibidor estadísticamente diferente y superior sobre el crecimiento de unidades formadoras de colonias (UFC) de X. axonopodis pv. passiflorae. O maracujá-amarelo (Passiflora edulis Sims f. flavicarcarpa Deg.) é uma cultura importante na agricultura da Amazônia brasileira, especialmente no estado do Pará. Mas o seu cultivo tem sofrido uma redução de suas áreas e produtividade devido às doenças causadas por bactérias, em que o controle químico, às vezes, não apresenta os resultados esperados. A própolis de abelhas africanizadas (Apis mellifera L.) tem se mostrado um importante antibiótico natural no controle de microrganismos indesejáveis de plantas e animais. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo o estudo in vitro da atividade antibiótica de diferentes extratos de própolis de abelhas africanizadas de duas diferentes localidades do estado do Pará sobre o agente causador da mancha bacteriana do maracujá (Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. passiflorae). Foi realizada uma análise fatorial de três fatores: origem X solvente X concentração. Verificou-se que as concentrações de 0,5% foram estatisticamente superiores às demais, com poder de inibição do crescimento médio de 86%, e o extrato de própolis do apiário de Santa Izabel do Pará, Pará, Brasil, obtido em etanol a 80%, demonstrou efeito inibitório estatisticamente diferente e superior do crescimento de unidades formadoras de colônias (UFC) de X. axonopodis pv. passiflorae.

A própolis apícola, produto balsâmico obtido de resinas vegetais pelas abelhas exóticas africanizadas (Apis mellifera L.), transportado e processado por estas, oriundo da atividade que explora e mantém estes indivíduos, a apicultura, tem-se mostrado um importante aliado de humanos, plantas e animais no controle de microrganismos indesejáveis. Em razão disto, foi realizada uma revisão bibliográfica com a finalidade de agrupar trabalhos de importância sobre a própolis ao nível mundial. São relacionados alguns dos mais importantes artigos publicados sobre o assunto, para esclarecer as principais questões acerca do histórico do uso da própolis, seus benefícios comprovados através de estudos científicos, e seu potencial uso futuro. O conhecimento disto pelo produtor poderá contribuir consideravelmente para o incremento da atividade apícola, potencialização da apicultura além de unir informações sobre o potencial uso deste como biocontrole e fitoterápico.
