Abstract The rates of flavor-changing weak processes are crucial in determining the conditions of beta equilibrium in neutron stars and mergers, influencing the damping of oscillations, the stability of rotating pulsars, and the emission of gravitational waves. We derive a formula for these rates at nonzero temperature, to leading order in the Fermi coupling and exact in the QCD coupling. Utilizing a simple phenomenological holographic model dual to QCD, we study massless unpaired quark matter at high densities. We numerically compute the rate for small deviations from beta equilibrium and derive an analytic approximation for small temperatures. Our findings reveal that, compared to the perturbative result, the rate is suppressed by logarithmic factors of the temperature.

Abstract The dynamics of first-order phase transitions in strongly coupled systems are relevant in a variety of systems, from heavy ion collisions to the early universe. Holographic theories can be used to model these systems, with fluctuations usually suppressed. In this case the system can come close to a spinodal point where theory and experiments indicate that the behaviour should be similar to a critical point of a second-order phase transition. We study this question using a simple holographic model and confirm that there is critical slowing down and scaling behaviour close to the spinodal point, with precise quantitative estimates. In addition, we determine the start of the scaling regime for the breakdown of quasistatic evolution when the temperature of a thermal bath is slowly decreased across the transition. We also extend the analysis to the dynamics of second-order phase transitions and strong crossovers.

Abstract We show how Higgs phases at non-zero density can be described using a simple analytic method for gauge theories possessing a holographic dual. We introduce co-dimension one branes in a bottom-up gravity dual that are sources of form flux, such that the effective curvature radius is changed when the brane is crossed. This mimics the expected flow produced by color branes nucleating in a top-down model.

Abstract We study the phase diagram of a confining three-dimensional N $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 1 supersymmetric U(N) × U(N + M) theory with holographic dual corresponding to a known string theory solution. The theory possesses a global U(1) symmetry under which magnetic monopoles are charged. We introduce both temperature and an external magnetic field for monopoles and find that there are deconfinement phase transitions as any of the two is increased, supporting monopole condensation as the possible mechanism for confinement. We find that the transition as the magnetic field is increased is second order, providing the first example in holographic duals of a deconfinement transition which is not first order. We also uncover a rich structure in the phase diagram, with a triple point and a critical point where a line of first order transitions end.

Abstract We study the fate of reparametrization invariance of Wilson loops, also known as ‘zig-zag’ symmetry, under the RG flow using some simple cases as guidance. We restrict our analysis to large-N, strongly coupled CFTs and use the holographic dual description of a Wilson loop as a fundamental string embedded in asymptotically AdS spaces, at zero and nonzero temperature. We then introduce a cutoff in the holographic radial direction and integrate out the section of the string closer to the AdS boundary in the spirit of holographic Wilsonian renormalization. We make explicit the map between Wilson loop reparametrizations and conformal transformation of the string worldsheet and show that a cutoff anchored to the worldsheet breaks conformal invariance and induces an effective defect action for reparametrizations at the cutoff scale, in a way similar to nearly-AdS 2 gravity or SYK models. On the other hand, a cutoff in the target space breaks worldsheet diffeomorphisms and Weyl transformations but keeps conformal transformations unbroken and does not generate a non-trivial action for reparametrizations.

Abstract We construct a black hole geometry dual to a (2+1)-dimensional defect in an ambient (3+1)-dimensional gauge theory at non-zero temperature and quark density. The geometry is a solution to the equations of motion of type IIB supergravity with brane sources, a low energy limit of an intersection of stacks of color D3-branes and flavor D5-branes. We consider the case in which the number of D5-branes is large and they can be homogeneously distributed along the directions orthogonal to the defect, creating in this way a multilayer structure. The quark density is generated by exciting a gauge field in the worldvolume of the dynamic brane sources. We study the thermodynamics of the anisotropic black hole and compute the energy density of the dual theory, as well as the pressures and speeds of sound along the directions parallel and orthogonal to the defect. We also calculate transport coefficients in the shear channel, quark-antiquark potentials, and the entanglement entropies for slab subregions. These analyses give us a good overview on how the degrees of freedom are spread, entangled, and behave in this unquenched system in the deconfining phase at strong coupling.

Abstract Energy conditions, especially the null energy condition (NEC), are generically imposed on solutions to retain a physically sensible classical field theory and they also play an important role in the AdS/CFT duality. Using this duality, we study non-trivially deformed strongly coupled quantum field theories at large-N c . The corresponding dual classical gravity constructions entail the use of radially non-monotonic D-brane distributions. The distributions are phenomenological in the sense that they do not correspond to the smearing of known probe D-brane embeddings. The gravity backgrounds are supersymmetric and hence perturbatively stable, and do not possess curvature singularities. There are no short-cuts through the bulk spacetime for signal propagation which assures that the field theory duals are causal. Nevertheless, some of our solutions violate the NEC in the gravity dual. In these cases the non-monotonicity of the D-brane distributions is reflected in the properties of the renormalization group flow: none of the c-functions proposed in the literature are monotonic. This further suggests that the non-monotonic behavior of the c-functions within previously known anisotropic backgrounds does not originate from the breaking of Lorentz invariance. We surmise that NEC violations induced by quantum corrections also need to be considered in holographic duals, but can be studied already at the classical level.

Abstract A pair of complex-conjugate fixed points that lie close to the real axis generates a large mass hierarchy in the real renormalization group flow that passes in between them. We show that pairs of complex fixed points that are close to the real axis and to one another generate multiple hierarchies, some of which can be parametrically enhanced. We illustrate this effect at weak coupling with field-theory examples, and at strong coupling using holography. We also construct complex flows between complex fixed points, including flows that violate the c-theorem.

Abstract We investigate first order phase transitions in a holographic setting of five-dimensional Einstein gravity coupled to a scalar field, constructing phase diagrams of the dual field theory at finite temperature. We scan over the two-dimensional parameter space of a simple bottom-up model and map out important quantities for the phase transition: the region where first order phase transitions take place; the latent heat, the transition strength parameter α, and the stiffness. We find that α is generically in the range 0.1 to 0.3, and is strongly correlated with the stiffness (the square of the sound speed in a barotropic fluid). Using the LISA Cosmology Working Group gravitational wave power spectrum model corrected for kinetic energy suppression at large α and non-conformal stiffness, we outline the observational prospects at the future space-based detectors LISA and TianQin. A TeV-scale hidden sector with a phase transition described by the model could be observable at both detectors.

Abstract A heavy quark moving through a strongly coupled deconfined plasma has a holographic dual description as a string moving in a black brane geometry. We apply the holographic Wilsonian renormalization method to derive a holographic effective string action dual to the heavy quark. The effective action only depends on the geometry between the black brane horizon and a cutoff localized in the radial direction, corresponding to the IR of the dual theory. We derive RG flow equations for the coefficients in the effective action and show that the force acting on the heavy quark is independent of the position of the cutoff. All the information about the UV is hidden in integration constants of the RG flow equations. This type of approach could be used to improve semi-holographic models where the UV is described by perturbative QCD and the IR by a holographic model.

Abstract We construct a family of holographic duals to anisotropic states in a strongly coupled gauge theory. On the field theory side the anisotropy is generated by giving a vacuum expectation value to a dimension three operator. We obtain our gravity duals by considering the geometry corresponding to the intersection of D3- and D5- branes along 2+1 dimensions. Our backgrounds are supersymmetric and solve the fully backreacted equations of motion of ten-dimensional supergravity with smeared D5-brane sources. In all cases the geometry flows to AdS 5 × 𝕊5 in the UV, signaling an isotropic UV fixed point of the dual field theory. In the IR, depending on the parameters of the solution, we find two possible behaviors: an isotropic fixed point or a geometry with anisotropic Lifshitz-like scaling symmetry. We study several properties of the solutions, including the entanglement entropy of strips. We show that any natural extension of existing c-functions will display non-monotonic behavior, conforming with the presence of new degrees of freedom only at intermediate regions between the boundary and the origin of the holographic dual.

There has been a surge of interest in effective non-Lorentzian theories of excitations with restricted mobility, known as fractons. Examples include defects in elastic materials, vortex lattices or spin liquids. In the effective theory novel coordinate-dependent symmetries emerge that shape the properties of fractons. In this review we will discuss these symmetries, cover the effective description of gapless fractons via elastic duality, and discuss their hydrodynamics.

Abstract We speculate that the weak gravity conjecture applied to theories with holographic duals bans the existence of disordered phases at zero temperature. We test this idea by introducing a non-zero baryon chemical potential in a deformation of the SU(N c ) × SU(N c ) Klebanov-Witten gauge theory with broken supersymmetry and conformal invariance. At low temperature, a disordered phase dual to a black brane geometry is unstable for low chemical potentials and metastable for high values. In the metastable phase, states with a partial Higgsing of the gauge group are favored over the normal disordered phase. This is reflected in the properties of the effective potential for color branes in the dual geometry, where the appearance of a global minimum outside the horizon signals the onset of a brane nucleation instability. When the Higgsing involves only one of the group factors, the global minimum remains at a finite distance from the horizon, making it possible to construct holographic duals to metastable “color superconducting” states. We also consider branes dual to excitations with baryon charge, but find that the extremal geometry remains marginally stable against the emission of particles carrying baryon charge independently of the strength of the deformation.

Abstract We revisit the large-N c phase diagram of N $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 4 super Yang-Mills theory at finite R-charge density and strong coupling, by means of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We conjecture new phases that result from a black hole shedding some of its charge through the nucleation of probe color D3-branes that remain at a finite distance from the black hole when the dual field theory lives on a sphere. In the corresponding ground states the color group is partially Higgsed, so these phases can be identified as having a type of color superconductivity. The new phases would appear at intermediate values of the R-charge chemical potential and we expect them to be metastable but long-lived in the large-N c limit.

Abstract We show how a Hall viscosity induced by a magnetic field can be generated in strongly coupled theories with a holographic dual. This is achieved by considering parity-breaking higher derivative terms in the gravity dual. These terms couple the Riemann curvature tensor to the field strength of a gauge field dual to the charge current, and have an analog in the field theory side as a coupling between the “Euler current” and the electromagnetic field. As a concrete example, we study the effect of the new terms in the thermodynamic and transport properties of a strongly coupled magnetized plasma dual to a dyonic black hole in AdS 4. As a new property of the holographic model, we find that for a state that is initially neutral at zero magnetic field, a charge density and non-dissipative Hall transport are present when the magnetic field is turned on. Remarkably, we also observe that the results from the holographic model are consistent with hydrodynamics even at magnetic fields much larger than temperature.

Abstract We study the q q ¯ $$ q\overline{q} $$ potential in strongly coupled non-conformal field theories with a non-trivial renormalization group flow via holography. We focus on the properties of this potential at an inter-quark separation L large compared to the characteristic scale of the field theory. These are determined by the leading order IR physics plus a series of corrections, sensitive to the properties of the RG-flow. To determine those corrections, we propose a general method applying holographic Wilsonian renormalization to a dual string. We apply this method to examine in detail two sets of examples, 3 + 1-dimensional theories with an RG flow ending in an IR fixed point; and theories that are confining in the IR, in particular, the Witten QCD and Klebanov-Strassler models. In both cases, we find corrections with a universal dependence on the inter-quark separation. When there is an IR fixed point, that correction decays as a power ∼ 1/L 4. We explain that dependence in terms of a double-trace deformation in a one-dimensional defect theory. For a confining theory, the decay is exponential ∼ e −M L , with M a scale of the order of the glueball mass. We interpret this correction using an effective flux tube description as produced by a background internal mode excitation induced by sources localized at the endpoints of the flux tube. We discuss how these results could be confronted with lattice QCD data to test whether the description of confinement via the gauge/gravity is qualitatively correct.

Abstract We investigate a simple holographic model for cold and dense deconfined QCD matter consisting of three quark flavors. Varying the single free parameter of the model and utilizing a Chiral Effective Theory equation of state (EoS) for nuclear matter, we find four different compact star solutions: traditional neutron stars, strange quark stars, as well as two non-standard solutions we refer to as hybrid stars of the second and third kind (HS2 and HS3). The HS2s are composed of a nuclear matter core and a crust made of stable strange quark matter, while the HS3s have both a quark mantle and a nuclear crust on top of a nuclear matter core. For all types of stars constructed, we determine not only their mass-radius relations, but also tidal deformabilities, Love numbers, as well as moments of inertia and the mass distribution. We find that there exists a range of parameter values in our model, for which the novel hybrid stars have properties in very good agreement with all existing bounds on the stationary properties of compact stars. In particular, the tidal deformabilities of these solutions are smaller than those of ordinary neutron stars of the same mass, implying that they provide an excellent fit to the recent gravitational wave data GW170817 of LIGO and Virgo. The assumptions underlying the viability of the different star types, in particular those corresponding to absolutely stable quark matter, are finally discussed at some length.

Abstract An effective action is proposed to compute the expectation value of Wilson loops in (S)U(N) gauge theories. The action consists of fermions localized on the loop and an Abelian gauge field that fixes the representation. The discussion is limited to weak coupling and Wilson loops in the fundamental representation extended along a smooth curve, but there are no restrictions on the matter content as long as the theory has a UV fixed point or it is conformal. For a circular Wilson loop it is found that the expectation value coincides at leading order with the exact result of the 1/2 BPS Wilson loop of N=4 $$ \mathcal{N}=4 $$ super Yang-Mills, which is determined by a solvable Gaussian matrix model.

Low-energy dynamics of many-body fracton excitations necessary to describe topological defects should be governed by a novel type of hydrodynamic theory. We use a Poisson bracket approach to systematically derive hydrodynamic equations from conservation laws of scalar theories with fracton excitations. We study three classes of theories. In the first class we introduce a general action for a scalar with a shift symmetry linear in the spatial coordinates, whereas the second one corresponds with a complex scalar, while the third class serves as a toy model for disclinations and dislocations propagating along the Burgers vector. We apply our construction to study hydrodynamic fluctuations around equilibrium states and derive the dispersion relations of hydrodynamic modes.

Abstract According to common lore, Equations of State of field theories with gravity duals tend to be soft, with speeds of sound either below or around the conformal value of υs=1/3 $$ {\upupsilon}_s=1/\sqrt{3} $$. This has important consequences in particular for the physics of compact stars, where the detection of two solar mass neutron stars has been shown to require very stiff equations of state. In this paper, we show that no speed limit exists for holographic models at finite density, explicitly constructing examples where the speed of sound becomes arbitrarily close to that of light. This opens up the possibility of building hybrid stars that contain quark matter obeying a holographic equation of state in their cores.

We examine knotted solutions, the most simple of which is the “Hopfion”, from the point of view of relations between electromagnetism and ideal fluid dynamics. A map between fluid dynamics and electromagnetism works for initial conditions or for linear perturbations, allowing us to find new knotted fluid solutions. Knotted solutions are also found to be solutions of nonlinear generalizations of electromagnetism, and of quantum-corrected actions for electromagnetism coupled to other modes. For null configurations, electromagnetism can be described as a null pressureless fluid, for which we can find solutions from the knotted solutions of electromagnetism. We also map them to solutions of Euler's equations, obtained from a type of nonrelativistic reduction of the relativistic fluid equations.

En el siguiente artículo se presenta el diseño y construcción de la estructura mecánica de un brazo robótico antropomórfico de cuatro grados de libertad con fines didácticos. El proyecto inició con una fase de desarrollo de conceptos obteniendo seis propuestas diseñadas para satisfacer las necesidades del cliente. Posteriormente se realizó la selección del concepto a desarrollar tomando como referencia las especificaciones del producto. Para el concepto propuesto se llevaron a cabo siete fases de rediseño que permitieron alcanzar la propuesta de diseño definitiva. Específicamente, se realizaron sucesivas etapas de simulación para analizar la respuesta dinámica de la estructura bajo la aplicación de cargas a través del tiempo, observar el estado de esfuerzos aplicado a cada parte y redimensionar los eslabones considerando las limitaciones y especificaciones previamente definidas. Con los resultados obtenidos, se generó una estructura que cumple con las especificaciones de diseño establecidas inicialmente, tomando en consideración las limitantes relacionadas con los servomotores a emplear y la carga máxima a manipular. Por último, se muestra el modelo cinemático directo e inverso del brazo además del producto final desarrollado.

Fue evaluada la aceptabilidad para una bebida de maíz morado endulzada con Stevia cristalizada 100% natural, Ácido Cítrico como acidulante y propóleos diluidos en etanol al 8% como conservante. Como diseño experimental se utilizó un Diseño de Mezclas Simplex con Centroide Ampliado, a través de 10 tratamientos con diferentes concentraciones de Stevia entre 3,6 – 4,67 g, Ácido Cítrico entre 1,5 -2,33 g y Propóleos entre 0,33 – 1,0 g que fueron basadas en 1 Kg de bebida de maíz morado variedad canteño. La evaluación de la aceptabilidad, se realizó mediante un panel sensorial de 40 panelistas escogidos al azar, utilizando una escala no estructurada con puntuación de 1-10 para evaluar la aceptabilidad de la bebida preparada. Los resultados obtenidos mostraron que, para obtener una mayor aceptabilidad de la bebida de maíz morado variedad canteño (Zea Mays L.), los rangos óptimos en cuanto a concentración de Stevia son de 3,6-4,1 g/1 kg de bebida, ácido cítrico 1,92-2,33 g/1 kg de bebida, y propóleos 0,3-0,67 g/1 kg de bebida

En las últimas décadas, la industria de las bebidas alcohólicas se ha intensificado debido a la demanda del mercado peruano, para ello es necesario el uso de técnicas industriales que nos sirvan para optimizar la obtención de bebidas cada vez más puras. Para esto se hace evidente el manejo correcto de variables que influyen en una destilación, tales como el tipo de bebida fermentada, presión de vacío, grado alcohólico y absorbancia. En el presente trabajo, se utilizó la chicha de jora, la cual es una bebida fermentada, principalmente de maíz, a la muestra de chicha se colocó en el equipo de destilación, siendo evaluadas las siguientes variables: presión, tipo de chicha y grado alcohólico. Asimismo se utilizó el líquido destilado de la chicha de jora, en la que se evaluó el efecto de la presión (385-760 mmHg) y el tipo de chicha (blanca y oscura), sobre la absorbancia y el grado alcohólico de las muestras. Para el procesamiento de los datos obtenidos se ingresaron los valores en Microsof Excel, luego para obtener un modelo experimental en el programa DATAFIT, el mismo que nos dio una ecuación exponencial de la siguiente forma: y = exp(a*x1+b*x2+c*x3+d), en la misma que la variable dependiente es la absorbancia. Por lo cual se ha encontrado que si existe una relación entre presión, grado alcohólico, tipo de chicha obteniendo una tendencia negativa en el modelo.

Encontramos en un total de 88.621 partos atendidos de julio de 1952 a julio de 1985, 44 pacientes en quienes se practicó histerectomía post parto; de las cuales 36 posteriores a cesárea y 8 post parto espontáneo o intervenido por fórceps. La mayor frecuencia de edad fue hallada en el grupo de 30 a 40 años. El mayor número de casos en cuanto a paridad se encontró en multigestantes (36.36%). Histerectomía total fue realizada en 31 casos (70.45%). La mayor indicación de cesárea que terminó en histerectomía fue la Iterativa. Clasificamos las histerectomías en indicadas y electivas, las indicadas por hemorragia o infección representaron el 84%, sobresaliendo el acrctismo placentario, la ruptura y atonía uterina. Sólo se presentaron cinco casos de infección (endomiometritis). Histerectomías inmediatas que se realizaron dentro de las primeras 12 horas post parto o post cesárea significaron el 84%. La complicación post operatoria más frecuente fue le infección de herida quirúrgica y hemorragia intra abdominal. Se presentaron en esta revisión dos fallecimientos (4.54%) atribuyéndose la causa de muerte a hemorragia intra abdominal, sepsis y coagulopatía de consumo. Los hallazgos del presente estudio coinciden con otras publicaciones sobre el tema. El acretismo placentario y la atonía uterina son la primera indicación de histerectomía precedidos de cesárea o cesáreas anteriores, especialmente en los últimos cinco años; lo que nos lleva a considerar y revisar las indicaciones de cesárea y a revaluar el aforismo de cesárea anterior igual cesárea.
