1. Revisiting Industrial Policy and Industrialization in Twentieth-Century Latin America

Abstract

This brief article seeks to introduce the reader to this special number on industrialization in contemporary Latin America. It does so considering three issues. First, the importance of industrialization in sustaining high rates of economic growth leading to high levels of income per capita. Second, the long-standing debate in global historiography regarding the successes and failures of industrial policy: markets vs. states. Lastly, Latin America´s industrial trajectory through the lenses of four historiographical tendencies, and the ways in which each of the four original papers relate to the extant literature, and contribute to enhancing our understanding of one of the most important economic transformations in the history of the region.

Abstract

Groucho Marx rechazaba pertenecer a cualquier club que lo aceptara como miembro. La solicitud de admisión de Colombia al club de países desarrollados, la Organización para la Cooperación y el Desarrollo Económico (OCDE), inspira cierto grado de analogía con la máxima del comediante americano. Son varios los aspectos en los que somos diferentes: ingreso per cápita, corrupción, eficiencia del sector público, etc. Pero hay un tema que cobra vital importancia en el contexto de las negociaciones de paz y la financiación del inminente posconflicto: la presión fiscal. El recaudo tributario del país está muy lejos del promedio OCDE – mientras nuestros ingresos tributarios rodean el 19% del PIB el promedio para la OCDE es del 35%, según datos comparables de la misma organización.

Abstract

El presente estudio es de tipo observacional, y según el nivel de profundidad es analítico, de tipo correlacional y retrospectivo de corte transversal. El cual se realizó en los pacientes hipertensos de la consulta externa de cardiología del hospital alemán nicaragüense en el periodo septiembre-diciembre del año 2019.En base a los resultados encontramos que el sexo más frecuente fue el sexo femenino, predominando el grupo etario entre los 55-64 años. Con respecto a los factores de riesgo la diabetes, el tabaquismo y el mal control de la presión arterial fueron los que más afectaron a la población.Al aplicar la estratificación de riesgo según Framingham, la mayoría tenía un riesgo alto con un 45.60%, según la estratificación de SCORE el riesgo moderado prevaleció con un 48.70% y según la estratificación de la OMS el 68.70% no tenían riesgo cardiovascular.Por otra parte el 31.80% de la población presento un evento cardiovascular. Y al correlacionar los eventos cardiovasculares con las escalas de estratificación de riesgo encontramos que las escalas de Framingham y SCORE son las que tienen una correlación positiva con un valor p

Abstract

The quality and flavor of a coffee cup are a result of the variety, the environmental offer, the agricultural practices, as well as the process followed to obtain the green beans that are finally roasted and ground. Coffee has many opportunities to vary both dry and wet processes, and the combination of the two emphasize some attributes that satisfy customers regarding new flavors and tastes. This chapter describes the processes used to obtain a stable product, some variations discovered by scientists and growers to achieve some special characteristics and well-known types of coffee, and the tools and methodologies to produce them in a consistent way. This chapter also has as an objective to encourage the creativity of scientists and growers to continue to investigate original ways to process coffee in a qualitative and sustainable manner. The socioeconomical aspect is implicit as specialty coffee has better prices in the market.
