A evolução dos equipamentos fotoativadores possibilitou um aumento da potência radiante da luz emitida por eles e, consequentemente, seu potencial de geração de calor. Apesar de existirem equipamentos fotoativadores que emitem luz com maior ou menor potência, o aumento de temperatura gerado pode ser prejudicial tanto para a polpa quanto para tecidos moles bucais.

Após escolher nossos equipamentos fotoativadores, com base em tudo o que já foi discutido nesta coluna, devemos nos atentar à manutenção e à possível necessidade de substituição desses equipamentos. Os equipamentos fotoativadores possuem diferentes características, e alguns deles emitem luz de forma mais homogênea e com uma emitância mais adequada para a polimerização de materiais resinosos , mas essas características precisam se manter ao longo do tempo.

Já sabemos que os equipamentos fotoativadores podem ser diferentes1 e que suas características, assim como a técnica do operador, podem influenciar na reação de polimerização dos materiais resinosos2. Outro assunto que precisa ser discutido é a biossegurança, pois o uso diário do equipamento em diferentes pacientes exige uma forma de proteção correta deles, para evitar a contaminação cruzada, especialmente considerando-se a condição atual de atendimento durante a pandemia do COVID-19.

Após discutirmos como a distância entre os equipamentos fotoativadores e os materiais resinosos pode influenciar no resultado final de restaurações, vamos discutir como a estabilização dos equipamentos sobre os materiais restauradores também é fundamental para uma polimerização eficiente. Os materiais resinosos fotoativados precisam receber uma determinada quantidade de luz (exposição radiante) para que sejam polimerizados adequadamente. Quando movimentamos os equipamentos fotoativadores sobre a restauração, podemos deixar parte do material resinoso sem receber essa energia luminosa necessária ou interromper o processo de ativação, causando uma polimerização insuficiente (Fig. 1)1 . Sabe-se que a luz azul emitida pelos equipamentos fotoativadores é prejudicial aos olhos e pode causar uma degradação da visão em longo prazo2 . Frente à falta de barreiras de proteção contra luz azul, é comum desviar o olhar durante o processo de fotoativação.

A potência, o espectro de emissão e o perfil do feixe luz são fatores importantes relacionados com a luz emitida pelos equipamentos fotoativadores, e que devem ser considerados na escolha de um equipamento fotoativador . Além disso, existem equipamentos feitos com diversos materiais, formatos e tamanhos. Assim, também devemos considerar os fatores relacionados com o desenho dos equipamentos: formato/ângulo e tamanho das ponteiras. O formato e a angulação da ponteira dos equipamentos fotoativadores são importantes para possibilitar seu correto posicionamento sobre o material a ser polimerizado.

To evaluate biocorrosion and eccentric occlusal loading interplay in marginal quality of cervical restorations.Cervical wedge-shaped cavities were prepared in extracted premolars and restored with a composite. Premolars underwent either an erosive challenge (E: 1% citric acid/10 min), eccentric occlusal loading (EOL: 150 N/2.5 Hz/10E and EOL, even if associated, did not influence enamel marginal quality. EOL/E/EOL impaired dentin/cementum marginal quality only in the case of scores and compared to E. E + EOL, EOL + E or EOL and even C, without differences between each other, did not influence results differently from E or EOL/E/EOL. Margins in dentin/cementum always showed lengthier gaps. Except for C, E and EOL + E cervical margin, there was a strong positive correlation between scores and μm.Eccentric occlusal loading and/or biocorrosion cannot be assumed as causes of marginal failure of cervical restorations in wedge-shaped cavities. A relevant concern may still be the establishment of adhesive interfaces in dentin/cementum.Although non-carious cervical lesions are strongly being recognized multifactorial and their respective restorations not always behave as expected, biocorrosion and eccentric occlusal loading interplay cannot serve as an explanation for marginal gaps they often present.

SUMMARY Purpose: This study aimed to characterize and analyze the number of voids and the percentage of void volume within and between the layers of class II composite restorations made using the bulk fill technique or the incremental technique by optical coherence tomography (OCT). Methods and Materials: Class II cavities (4×4×2 mm) were prepared in 48 human third molars (n=24 restorations per group, two class II cavities per tooth). Teeth were divided into four groups and restored as follows: group 1 (FOB), bulk filled in a single increment using Filtek One Bulk Fill (3M Oral Care); group 2 (FXT), incrementally filled using four oblique layers of Filtek Z350 XT (3M Oral Care); group 3 (FBF+FXT), bulk filled in a single increment using Filtek Bulk Fill Flowable Restorative (3M Oral Care) covered with two oblique layers of Filtek Z350 XT (3M Oral Care), and group 4 (FF+FXT), incrementally filled using Filtek Z350 XT Flow (3M Oral Care) covered with two oblique layers of Filtek Z350 XT (3M Oral Care). After the restorative procedure, specimens were immersed into distilled water and stored in a hot-air oven at 37°C. Forty-eight hours later, thermal cycling was conducted (5000 cycles, 5°C to 55°C). Afterward, OCT was used to detect the existence of voids and to calculate the number of voids and percentage of voids volume within each restoration. Data were submitted to chi-square and Kruskal-Wallis tests (α=0.05). Comparisons were made using the Dunn method. Results: Voids were detected in all groups, ranging from 0.000002 (FBF+FXT and FF+FXT) to 0.32 mm3 (FBF+FXT). FF + FXT presented voids in all of the restorations and had a significantly higher number of voids per restoration when compared to the other groups (p Conclusions: The use of flowable resin-based composites can result in an increased number of voids and percentage of voids volume in restorations, and this appears to be more related to voids present inside the syringe of the material than to the use of incremental or bulk fill restorative techniques.

SUMMARY Objectives: This study evaluated the effect of toothbrushing with a dentifrice on gloss, roughness profile, surface roughness, and wear of conventional and bulk-fill resin-based composites. Methods and Materials: Gloss and surface roughness of resin-based composites (RBCs; Admira Fusion X-tra, Aura Bulk Fill, Filtek Bulk Fill Flowable, Filtek Bulk Fill Posterior Restorative, Filtek Supreme Ultra, Herculite Ultra, Mosaic Enamel, SDR flow+, Sonic Fill 2, Tetric EvoFlow Bulk Fill and Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill) were analyzed before and after brushing; the roughness profile and wear were also determined after toothbrushing. Representative three-dimensional images of the surface loss and images comparing the unbrushed and brushed surfaces were also compared. Analysis of variance and Tukey post hoc tests were applied (α=0.05) to the gloss, surface roughness, roughness profile, and surface loss data. Pearson's correlation test was used to determine the correlation between gloss and surface roughness, surface loss and percentage of gloss decrease after brushing, and surface loss and surface roughness after brushing. Results: For all RBCs tested after 20,000 brushing cycles, the gloss was reduced and the surface roughness increased (p Conclusions: Toothbrushing with a dentifrice reduced the gloss, increased the surface roughness, and caused loss at the surface of all the RBCs tested. Considering all the properties tested, Mosaic Enamel exhibited excellent gloss retention and a low roughness profile and wear, while Admira Fusion X-tra exhibited the greatest decrease in gloss, the highest roughness profile, and the most wear.

This clinical study evaluated the effect of bleaching performed with violet LED light (405-410 nm), either combined with hydrogen peroxide (HP) gel, or not, on color change, dental sensitivity, participants' satisfaction and impact on their quality of life. A hundred participants were divided into one of the groups (n = 25): G1 - 35% HP (4 sessions, 1x/week); G2 - violet LED (4 sessions, 1x/week); G3 - violet LED (4 sessions, 2x/week); G4 - hybrid technique (violet LED + 35% HP; 4 sessions, 1x/week). Color evaluation was performed with colorimetric tests (objective and subjective), before, 14 days and 3 months after completion. Additionally, satisfaction with treatment, impact on quality of life (OHIP-14) and dental sensitivity were recorded. The data were submitted to statistical analysis, considering a significance level of 5%, with the exception of the data from the questionnaire on satisfaction (descriptive analysis). Two-way ANOVA and Tukey tests showed that there was no difference between color variation resulting from techniques used in G1 and G4; those used in G2 and G3 did not differ and were less effective for bleaching than those of the other groups, in both subjective and objective evaluations. Regarding tooth sensitivity, subjects in G2 and G3 experienced no sensitivity, ​​while those in G4 showed lower sensitivity values than those in G1. With respect to quality of life, only subjects in G1 and G2 showed a significant positive impact. Among the evaluated techniques, the hybrid type seemed to be a good alternative, showing effective bleaching with less tooth sensitivity.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate coating materials regarding color and roughness changes when applied over a composite resin. MATERIALS AND METHODS Specimens were made using Filtek Supreme Ultra. Coating materials were applied over the specimens' surface: Control (CTRL); Adper Single Bond Plus (SB); Scotchbond Universal (US); Clearfil SE (CL); Ambar APS (APS); Bioforty (BF); Fortify (FF); PermaSeal (PS); G-CoatPlus (GC). Specimens were evaluated regarding color changes (∆E00 ) using spectrophotometer (n = 10); surface roughness (Ra), using optical profilometer (n = 10); surface topography, using scanning electron microscopy (n = 1); and thickness of material, using optical microscopy (n = 1). Analyses were made before and after 24, 72, and 168 hours of storage in wine, used as a staining solution. Data was statistically analyzed using analysis of variance, Tukey and Pearson tests (α:.05). RESULTS None of the materials presented color stability. ∆E00 increased with increasing storage time at red wine, until 72 hours. BF, FF, PS, SB, and CTRL presented the lowest ∆E00 after 24 hours. To determine the potential effect of four different light curing units (LCUs) on the curing profile of two bulk fill resin-based composites (RBCs).Four LCUs (Bluephase 20i, Celalux 3, Elipar DeepCure-S and Valo Grand) were used to light cure two RBCs (Filtek Bulk Fill Posterior Restorative and Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill). The effective tip diameter, radiant power, radiant emittance, emission spectrum and light beam profile of the LCUs were measured. Knoop microhardness was measured at the top and bottom surfaces of RBC specimens that were 12-mm in diameter and 4-mm deep (n=5). The distribution of the spectral radiant power that was delivered to the surface of the specimen and the light transmission through the 4-mm thick specimens was measured using an integrating sphere. Two-way ANOVA and Tukey tests (α=0.05) were applied.The Valo Grand produced the most homogeneous microhardness across the surfaces of the RBCs (p0.05). When the Celalux 3, Bluephase 20i and Elipar DeepCure-S lights were used, the center of the specimens achieved greater hardness values compared to their outer regions (p0.05). Approximately 10% of the radiant power delivered to the top reached the bottom of the specimen, although almost no violet light passed through 4mm of either RBC. A positive correlation was observed between the radiant exposure and microhardness.The characteristics of the LCUs influenced the photoactivation of the RBCs. The use of a wide tip with a homogeneous light distribution is preferred when light curing RBCs using a bulk curing technique.

Objectives To determine the effects of tooth brushing on five bulk-fill resin based composites (RBCs). Method Ten samples of Filtek Supreme Enamel (control), Filtek One Bulk Fill, Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill, SonicFill 2, SDR flow+, and Admira Fusion X-tra were light cured for 20 seconds using the Valo Grand curing light. After 24 hours storage in air at 37°C, specimens were brushed in a random order using Colgate OpticWhite dentifrice and a soft toothbrush. Surface gloss was measured prior to brushing, after 5,000, 10,000 and 15,000 back and forth brushing cycles. Surface roughness was measured after 15,000 brushing cycles using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and selected scanning electron microscope (SEM) images were taken. The data was examined using ANOVA and pair-wise comparisons using Scheffe's post-hoc multiple comparison tests (α = 0.05). Results Surface gloss decreased and the surface roughness increased after brushing. Two-way ANOVA showed that both the RBC and the number of brushing cycles had a significant negative effect on the gloss. One-way ANOVA showed that the RBC had a significant effect on the roughness after 15,000 brushing cycles. For both gloss and roughness, brushing had the least effect on the nano-filled control and nano-filled bulk-fill RBC, and the greatest negative effect on Admira Fusion X-tra. The SEM images provided visual agreement. There was an excellent linear correlation (R2 = 0.98) between the logarithm of the gloss and roughness. Conclusion After brushing, the bulk-fill RBCs were all rougher than the control nano-filled RBC. The nano-filled bulk-fill RBC was the least affected by brushing. Clinical significance Bulk-fill RBCs lose their gloss faster and become rougher than the nanofilled conventional RBC, Filtek Supreme Ultra. The nanofilled bulk-fill RBC was the least affected by tooth brushing.

Postoperative sensitivity is one of the most common side effects of in-office bleaching with hydrogen peroxide. Laser phototherapy (LPT) has been suggested as an adjunctive treatment to prevent or minimize tooth sensitivity. This case report aimed to verify the efficacy of LPT in the reduction of sensitivity after in-office bleaching. Tooth bleaching was performed with 35% hydrogen peroxide activated with a hybrid LED-laser device. Immediately after the bleaching treatment, the patient reported dental sensitivity, as measured with a visual analog scale (VAS). To reduce sensitivity, LPT was applied with a 780-nm laser using the following parameters: 70 mW, exposure time of 10 seconds per point of irradiation (middle region of the buccal surfaces of each compromised tooth) in contact mode, energy of 1 J per point. Immediately after LPT, the patient reported a substantially lower level of pain on the VAS. Twenty-four hours after bleaching, the score on the VAS indicated that sensitivity levels had rebounded, and the patient received additional LPT. After 48 hours, the patient reported no dental sensitivity. The results in this patient indicated that irradiation with an infrared low-power laser substantially reduced dental pain generated by bleaching, suggesting that LPT should be considered as an auxiliary method to reduce postbleaching tooth sensitivity.

Light Curing Units (LCUs) are used daily in almost every dental office to photocure resins, but because the light is so bright, the user is unable to tell visually if there are any differences between different LCUs. This study evaluated the light output from six dental LCUs: Elipar Deep Cure-S (3M ESPE), Bluephase G2 (Ivoclar Vivadent), Translux 2Wave (Heraeus Kulzer), Optilight Prime (Gnatus), Slim Blast (First Medica) and Led.B (Guilin Woodpecker) with a fully charged battery, after 50, and again after 100, 20second light exposures. For each situation, the radiant power was measured 10 times with a laboratory-grade power meter. Then, the emission spectrum was measured using a fiber-optic spectrometer followed by an analysis of the light beam profile. Objectives To evaluate the accuracy of four dental radiometers when measuring the output from nine light curing units (LCUs). Methods The light output from nine light-emitting diode LCUs was measured with a laboratory-grade power meter (PowerMax-Pro 150 HD) and four dental radiometers (Bluephase Meter II, SDI LED Radiometer, Kerr LED Radiometer, and LEDEX CM4000). Ten measurements were made of each LCU with each radiometer. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Tukey tests (α = 0.05) were used to determine if there was a difference between the calculated irradiance values from the power meter and those from the radiometers. Where applicable, the LCUs were ranked according to their power and irradiance values. The emission spectra from the LCUs was measured using an integrating sphere attached to a fiber-optic spectrometer (N = 10). The beam profile of the LCUs was measured with a beam profiler camera. Results Of the dental radiometers, only the Bluephase Meter II could measure power. ANOVA showed no significant difference between power values measured with the laboratory-grade meter and the Bluephase Meter II (p = 0.527). The difference between the mean irradiance reported by the various radiometers for the same LCU was up to 479 mW/cm 2 . The ranking of the power values obtained using the laboratory-grade meter was the same for the Bluephase Meter II. Conclusion When compared to the calculated irradiance values from the laboratory-grade power meter, the Bluephase Meter II provided the most accurate data. Clinical significance Considering the great variation between the irradiance values provided by radiometers and their overall inaccuracy when compared to a laboratory-grade meter, dentists should not place too much faith in the absolute irradiance value. However, hand-held radiometers can be used to monitor changes in the light output of LCUs over time.

Este estudo in vitro teve como objetivo a comparação de diferentes protocolos para fotoativação de restaurações em resina composta por meio de teste de microdureza e análise da adaptação marginal com microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Foram confeccionadas restaurações de 2mmx4mmx2mm com a resina composta Premisa (Kerr) em 30 dentes bovinos. Durante o procedimento restaurador, o método de fotoativação teve variação, sendo um grupo ativado com o método contínuo (grupo controle) durante 20 segundos, utilizando o fotoativador Elipar Freelight 2; outro grupo utilizou o mesmo equipamento fotoativador, com variação da distância da ponta ativadora, a fim da promoção de um método soft-start (grupo soft-start), tendo distância inicial de 6mm por 20 segundos, seguido de distância mínima por mais 10 segundos; e um terceiro grupo utilizou a tecnologia PLS (grupo DEMI), fornecida pelo equipamento DEMI, que fornece uma luz pulsada e permite a polimerização adequada de uma resina composta em 5 segundos (segundo o fabricante). Após 24 horas de restaurados, mantidos em estufa a 37ºC, os dentes foram seccionados no sentido inciso cervical resultando em 60 corpos de prova, sendo metade deles utilizados em cada teste (N=10). As metades tiveram as superfícies correspondentes ao corte transversal lixadas até a obtenção de superfícies planas e polidas, sendo que 30 delas foram selecionadas aleatoriamente para o teste de microdureza Knoop em 3 diferentes profundidades e as outras 30 metades foram replicadas em resina epóxica para leitura em microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Com as imagens obtidas foram feitas medidas de porcentagem de perímetro de restauração com desadaptação marginal e largura da maior fenda encontrada. Foram aplicados testes estatísticos de análise de variância split plot para os resultados de dureza e one way para a adaptação marginal. Objetivo: avaliar a dureza de uma resina composta fotoativada com dois métodos diferentes, contínuo e soft-start, por meio da variação da distância entre a ponta fotoativadora e a resina composta (7 mm e 0 mm). Materiais e métodos: Foram confeccionados 20 corpos-de-prova, nos quais a superfície irradiada e a oposta foram analisadas, totalizando 40 superfícies divididas em quatro grupos (n = 10): Grupo 1, método contínuo + superfície irradiada; Grupo 2, método contínuo + superfície oposta; Grupo 3, método soft-start + superfície irradiada; Grupo 4, método soft-start + superfície oposta. Os corpos-de-prova foram confeccionados com o auxílio de matrizes pretas de polipropileno, com 4 mm de diâmetro e 2 mm de espessura, utilizando a resina composta Z350 (3M ESPE) na cor AO3 e o fotoativador Elipar Freelight 2 (3M ESPE). Os corpos-de-prova foram submetidos ao teste de microdureza Vickers, no microdurômetro HMV- 2000 (Shimadzu). Foram realizados cinco entalhes por superfície, com carga de 50 gf por 45 segundos. Para a análise estatística, foram realizados os testes de ANOVA e Tukey. Resultados: Não foi encontrada diferença estatisticamente significante entre os métodos avaliados nas superfícies irradiadas. Entretanto, nas superfícies opostas, houve diferença entre os protocolos, sendo que o soft-start obteve menores valores de dureza. Quando comparadas as diferentes profundidades, houve redução nos valores de dureza para ambos os métodos de fotoativação, de forma que a porcentagem de dureza máxima de 80% não foi atingida na superfície oposta à irradiada. Relevância: O cirurgião-dentista, em sua prática clínica, deve atentar para o método de fotoativação de suas restaurações, visto que este pode prejudicar a qualidade da polimerização de resinas compostas, especialmente na profundidade de 2 mm em resinas opacas. Objective: to evaluate the hardness of a composite resin polymerized with two different methods, continuous and soft-start, by varying the distance between the activator tip and the composite resin (7 mm and 0 mm). Materials and Methods: Twenty test specimens were fabricated, in which the irradiated and the opposite surfaces were analyzed, totaling 40 surfaces divided into 4 groups (n = 10): Group 1, continuous method + irradiated surface; Group 2, continuous method + opposite surface; Group 3, soft-start method + irradiated surface; Group 4, soft-start method + opposite surface. The test specimens were prepared using black polypropylene matrices, with a diameter of 4 mm and thickness of 2 mm, Z350 composite resin (3M ESPE), shade AO3, and the Elipar Freelight 2 curing unit (3M ESPE). The test specimens were subjected to the Vickers hardness test in an HMV-2000 microhardness tester (Shimadzu). Five indentations were made per surface with a load of 50 gf for 45 seconds. The ANOVA and Tukey tests were used for the statistical analysis. Results: No statistically signifi cant difference between the evaluated methods was found in the irradiated surfaces; however, in the opposite surfaces, there were differences between protocols, in that the soft-start protocol achieved the lowest hardness values. When comparing the different depths, there was a reduction in hardness values for both activation methods, so that the maximum hardness percentage of 80% was not achieved in the opposite surface. Relevance: The dentist should be knowledgeable of the photoactivation method applied to his/her restorations, since it may reduce the polymerization quality, especially in depths of 2 mm when using opaque resins.

Objetivo: determinar a rugosidade superficial de coroas de quatro materiais processados por tecnologia CAD-CAM antes e após ensaio de desgaste realizado em um simulador da mastigação. E, ainda, mensurar a perda de volume e a perda de peso desses materiais após o ensaio de desgaste. Materiais e métodos: sessenta e quatro coroas foram confeccionadas e distribuídas em grupos. Grupos de coroas simulando o dente 16: B (IPS e.max CAD), C (Suprinity), D (Enamic) e E (Lava Ultimate); grupos de coroas antagonistas simulando o dente 46: AB, AC, AD e AE (todas compostas do material IPS e.max CAD). As coroas foram levadas à uma simuladora da mastigação para a realização do ensaio de desgaste. Antes do ensaio, as coroas foram submetidas à pesagem e à análise em um perfilômetro para determinação da rugosidade superficial e, também, para obtenção de imagens da topografia para determinação do volume. Após o ensaio de desgaste, as mesmas análises foram repetidas e os dados coletados e analisados. Resultados: os valores de rugosidade encontrados antes e após o ensaio de desgaste para os grupos de coroas testadas foram E > D = C = B, e para os grupos de coroas antagonistas foram AB = AC = AD = AE. Não houve diferença estatística dos valores de Ra antes e após o ensaio de desgaste de nenhum grupo quando comparados entre si. Os valores de perda de volume encontrados foram: grupo B = 29,18 mm3, grupo C = 21,59 mm3, grupo D = 20,73 mm3, grupo E = 14,17 mm3, grupo AB = 23,28 mm3, grupo AC = 26,07 mm3, grupo AD = 26,57 mm3 e grupo AE = 14,30 mm3. Os valores de perda de peso encontrados foram: grupo B = 0,026 g, grupo C = 0,017 g, grupo D = 0,007 g, grupo E = 0,007 g, grupo AB = 0,012 g, grupo AC = 0,011 g, grupo AD = 0,045 g e grupo AE = 0,003 g. Conclusões: as coroas IPS e.max CAD, Suprinity e Enamic apresentaram melhor desempenho no parâmetro rugosidade superficial, mantendo os valores de rugosidade pelo período de um ano de simulação da mastigação. As coroas de IPS e.max CAD apresentaram ótimo desempenho como coroa antagonista dos materiais vitrocerâmicos, híbrido e resinoso, no quesito rugosidade superficial, não alterando os valores de rugosidade apresentados após um ano de simulação da mastigação. As coroas Lava Ultimate apresentaram o melhor desempenho no quesito desgaste, com os menores valores de perda de volume e de peso. Apresentaram também a menor taxa de desgaste do antagonista. Não foi encontrada relação entre o comportamento de desgaste e o parâmetro rugosidade superficial. IPS e.max CAD, Suprinity e Enamic exibiram um potencial de desgaste maior, mas apresentaram menor rugosidade do que o Lava Ultimate. Purpose: determine the surface roughness of four materials processed by CAD-CAM technology before and after wear test carried out in a chewing simulator. And measure the volume loss and weight loss of these materials after the wear test. Materials and methods: sixty-four crowns were made and distributed in groups. Groups of crowns simulating tooth 16: B (IPS e.max CAD), C (Suprinity), D (Enamic) and E (Lava Ultimate); groups of antagonistic crowns simulating tooth 46: AB, AC, AD and AE (all composed of IPS e.max CAD material). The crowns were taken to a chewing simulator to perform the wear test. Before the test, the crowns were weighed and analyzed in a profilometer to determine the surface roughness and also to obtain images of the topography to determine the volume. After the wear test, the same analyzes were repeated and the data collected and analyzed. Results: the roughness values found before and after the wear test for the groups of crowns were E> D = C = B, and for the groups of antagonist crowns they were AB = AC = AD = AE. There was no statistical difference in the Ra values before and after the wear test of any group when compared to each other. The values of volume loss found were group B = 29.18 mm3, group C = 21.59 mm3, group D = 20.73 mm3, group E = 14.17 mm3, group AB = 23.28 mm3, group AC = 26.07 mm3, group AD = 26.57 mm3 and group AE = 14.30 mm3. The weight loss values found were group B = 0.026 g, group C = 0.017 g, group D = 0.007 g, group E = 0.007 g, group AB = 0.012 g, group AC = 0.011 g, group AD = 0.045 g and group AE = 0.003 g. Conclusions: the IPS e.max CAD and Suprinity crowns, together with the Enamic crowns, showed better performance in the surface roughness parameter, keeping the roughness values at acceptable levels for the period of one year of mastication simulation. The IPS e.max CAD crowns showed excellent performance as an antagonist crown of the vitro-ceramic materials, hybrid and resinous, in terms of surface roughness, without changing the roughness values after one year of mastication simulation. Lava Ultimate crowns showed the best performance in terms of wear, with the lowest values of volume and weight loss. They also had the lowest wear rate of the antagonist. No relationship was found between the wear behavior and the surface roughness parameter. IPS e.max CAD, Suprinity and Enamic exhibited higher wear potential, but had less roughness than Lava Ultimate. The Enamic material would be the least suitable for a restorative treatment when the antagonist tooth is IPS e.max CAD, since it caused the highest weight loss, and together with Suprinity, the highest volume loss of the antagonist crown.

Esta revisão da literatura teve como objetivo sintetizar a informação disponível a respeito dos efeitos dos agentes clareadores sobre o esmalte dental, a resina composta e a sua interface adesiva. Os dados dos estudos revisados focam na utilização dos géis clareadores, em variadas concentrações e tempos de tratamento, agindo sobre a cor, a rugosidade superficial e a microdureza de diferentes tipos de resinas compostas e o efeito destes branqueadores sobre o esmalte dental. Enfoque também no efeito dos agentes clareadores sobre a interface adesiva das resinas compostas com a utilização de diferentes tipos de sistemas adesivos e modos de aplicação. As fontes de dados utilizados foram o PubMed e o Google Acadêmico, palavraschave digitados: bleaching AND enamel AND bond strenght AND composite OR restoration AND color AND superficial roughness AND microhardness. Os estudos apontam um efeito adverso resultante do procedimento de clareamento sobre o esmalte, a resina composta e a interface adesiva. Este efeito é mais acentuado sobre os materiais dentários (compósitos e sistemas adesivos) do que no tecido dental (esmalte). Quanto maior for a concentração do clareador mais agressivo é o seu efeito nocivo sobre estrutura dental e materiais. As alterações das propriedades das resinas compostas dependem do tempo de exposição e do tipo de estrutura do compósito. Os pacientes devem ser alertados sobre a possível necessidade de reparo, conserto ou até mesmo a substituição das restaurações de resina composta ao realizarem o clareamento, devido às diferenças de como tecidos dentais e materiais restauradores reagem aos agentes clareadores. É interessante utilizar de formas propostas na literatura para amenizar os impactos negativos do clareamento sobre as restaurações como o polimento pós procedimento branqueador. O sistemas adesivo do tipo condicione e lave apresenta uma resistência maior comparado ao autocondicionante. O adesivo universal também apresenta maior resistência quando utilizado na forma condicione e lave. This literature review aimed to synthesize the available information regarding the effects of bleaching agents on dental enamel, composite resin and its adhesive interface. The data from the reviewed studies focus on the use of whitening gels, in varying concentrations and treatment times, acting on the color, surface roughness and microhardness of different types of composite resins and the effect of these whiteners on dental enamel. Also focus on the effect of bleaching agents on the adhesive interface of composite resins using different types of adhesive systems and application modes. The data sources used were PubMed and Google Scholar, keywords engines: bleaching AND enamel AND bond strength AND composite OR restoration AND color AND superficial roughness AND microhardness. The studies indicate a adverse effect resulting from the whitening procedure on the enamel, the composite resin and the adhesive interface. This effect is more pronounced on dental materials (composites and adhesive systems) than on dental tissue (enamel). The higher the concentration of the bleach, the more aggressive its harmful effect on dental structure and materials. Changes in the properties of composite resins depend on the exposure time and the type of composite structure. Patients should be alerted to the possible need for repair or even replacing composite resin restorations when performing bleaching, due to differences in how dental tissues and restorative materials react to bleaching agents. It is interesting to use in ways proposed in the literature to mitigate the negative impacts of bleaching on restorations such as pre- and post-whitening polishing. The adhesive systems of the condition and wash type have a higher resistance compared to the self-etching. The universal adhesive also presents greater resistance when used in the condition and wash form.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar o efeito da asperização com ponta diamantada e o jateamento com óxido de alumínio (Al2O3) como tratamentos de superfície e diferentes protocolos adesivos, associados ou não ao uso do silano, no reparo da resina composta do tipo bulk fill envelhecida. Cento e cinquenta discos (10 mm x 1,2 mm) de resina composta foram fabricados utilizando a resina composta FiltekTM One Bulk Fill (3M ESPE) e fotoativados durante 20 s, utilizando o equipamento fotopolimerizador de LED (Valo, Ultradent Product Inc. South Jordan, EUA), com a emitância de 1200 mW/cm2. A superfície de todos os corpos de prova foi padronizada com uma sequência de lixas e então submetida a um processo de envelhecimento acelerado utilizando uma ciclagem térmica com um total de 5.000 ciclos, com banhos de 5°C e 55°C e tempo de imersão de 30s. Os corpos de prova foram divididos de acordo com o tratamento de superfície a ser realizado: sem tratamento (ST), asperização com ponta diamantada de granulação fina (A) e jateamento com partículas de Al2O3 (J). Em seguida, dentro de cada grupo, os corpos de prova foram aleatoriamente distribuídos em 5 subgrupos de acordo com o protocolo adesivo a ser realizado: sem adesivo (SA), Adper Single Bond 2 (SB), Single Bond Universal (SBU), Silano + Adper Single Bond 2 (S+SB) e silano (S), totalizando 15 grupos experimentais (n=10). Após a realização dos tratamentos de superfície e protocolos adesivos, foram confeccionados três cilindros de resina (1,0 mm de diâmetro e 1,0 mm de altura) utilizando a mesma resina composta bulk fill, os mesmos parâmetros e equipamento fotopolimerizador, para simular o reparo. Os corpos de prova foram armazenados por um período de 24 horas em água deionizada em estufa à 37°C e então submetidos ao teste de resistência de união ao microcisalhamento em máquina de ensaio universal com velocidade de 1 mm/min. A área da falha foi analisada com auxílio de um microscópio digital (50x de aumento) para determinação do padrão de fratura. Os dados obtidos foram analisados estatisticamente pelo teste Análise de Variância (ANOVA) a dois fatores e em seguida empregado o teste de Tukey (?=0,05). Os valores de resistência de união dos grupos que não receberam tratamento de superfície, independente do protocolo adesivo utilizado, foram inferiores e diferentes estatisticamente daqueles que foram submetidos aos tratamentos de superfície com ponta diamantada ou jateamento (p < 0,001). Quando realizada a asperização ou o jateamento o único protocolo adesivo a se diferenciar dos demais, com resultados estatisticamente inferiores foi o protocolo sem adesivo (SA) (p < 0,001). Não houve diferença estatística entre os grupos A/SB, A/SBU, A/S+SB e A/S e entre os grupos J/SB, J/SBU, JS+SB e J/S. O grupo J/SBU apresentou maiores valores de resistência de união que o grupo A/SBU (p < 0,001). Falhas coesivas no substrato envelhecido e mistas foram os padrões de fratura mais frequentes quando foi realizado o tratamento da superfície, enquanto falhas adesivas foi o padrão mais comum quando não foi realizado tratamento de superfície. Conclui-se que os tratamentos de superfície com ponta diamantada ou jateamento com Al2O3 melhoram os valores de resistência de união em um reparo de resina composta do tipo bulk fill e quando associados a utilização de qualquer um dos sistemas adesivos estudados, combinado ou não ao uso do silano, promovem uma boa resistência de união. A utilização do SBU resulta em um maior valor de resistência de união quando aplicado em superfícies tratadas com jateamento com Al2O3. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of roughening with diamond bur and air abrasion with aluminum oxide (Al2O3) as surface treatments and different adhesive protocols, associated or not with the use of silane, on the repair of aged bulk fill composite resin. One hundred and fifty composite resin disks (10 mm x 1.2 mm) were made with a FiltekTM One Bulk Fill (3M ESPE) resin and photoactivated for 20 s using the LED light-curing unit Valo (Utradent Product Inc. South Jordan, USA) with an emission of 1200mW/cm2. The surface of all specimens was standardized with a sequence of sandpaper and then subjected to an accelerated aging process using thermal cycling (5.000 cycles, 5-55°C, dwell time: 30 s). The specimens were divided according to the surface treatments to be carried out: no surface treatment (NST) roughening with a fine diamond bur (DB), air abrasion with Al2O3 (A). Specimens from each surface treatments were randomly assigned into 5 subgroups according to the adhesive protocol to be performed: no adhesive (NA), Adper Single Bond 2 (SB), Single Bond Universal (SBU), silane + Adper Single Bond 2 (S+SB) and silane (S), resulting in 15 experimental groups. After the surface treatments and adhesive protocols, three resin composite cylinders (1.0 mm diameter x 1.0 mm high) of the same bulk fill resin composite were built using the same parameters and light curing unit to simulate the repair. After water storage for 24 hours in deionized water at 37°C, the specimens were subjected to microshear bond strength test in a universal testing machine at a speed of 1 mm/min. The failure area was analyzed under a digital microscope (50x magnification) to identify the fracture pattern. Data were analyzed by two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey test (?=0.05). Groups without surface treatment, regardless of the adhesive protocol used, showed lower bond strength values than the groups treated with diamond bur and air abrasion with Al2O3 particles (p < 0,001). When surface treatment was done, either diamond bur or air abrasion, the only adhesive protocol to differ from the others, with statistically inferior results was the protocol without adhesive (NA) (p < 0,001). There was no statistical difference between groups DB/SB, DB/SBU, DB/S+SB e DB/S and between groups A/SB, A/SBU, A/S+SB e A/S. The A/SBU group showed higher bond strength value than the DB/SBU group (p < 0,001). Cohesive failures in the aged substrate and mixed were the most frequent fracture patterns when surface treatment was performed, while adhesive failures were the most common patter when surface treatment was not performed. It could be concluded that surface treatments with diamond bur or air abrasion with Al2O3 improve the bond strength values in a bulk fill composite resin repair and when associated with the use of any of the studied adhesive systems, combined or not with the use of silane, promote satisfactory bond strength values. The use of SBU showed a higher bond strength values when applied to surfaces treated with Al2O3.

As lesões cervicais não cariosas (LCNCs) são definidas pela perda de estrutura dental na junção cemento/esmalte que envolve três mecanismos de estresse mecânico (tensão), atrito (fricção) e erosão (degradação química).. Existem tratamentos preventivos e dessensibilizantes para o principal sintoma das LCNCs, a hipersensibilidade dentinária cervical (HDC), porém, em casos que há perda de estrutura dental maior que 1mm é necessário realizar uma intervenção restauradora. Dessa forma, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a resistência de união da dentina erodida e abrasionada modificada com diferentes pré-tratamentos e posteriormente restauradas com resina composta, através do teste de microtração. Para tanto, foram selecionados 40 molares humanos íntegros, que tiveram as porções oclusais seccionadas até exposição da dentina. Os espécimes passaram por desafio erosivo e abrasivo em uma ciclagem de 5 dias. Após os desafios, os espécimes receberam os tratamentos de superfície (n=10): G1: controle sem tratamento; G2: tratamento de superfície com ponta diamantada; G3: jateamento com óxido de alumínio, G4: ciclagem com enxaguatório fluoretado Elmex Erosion. Feito isso os espécimes foram restaurados, seccionados em palitos e submetidos ao teste de microtração em uma máquina universal de ensaios a 0,5mm/min. Para a analise estatística, foi utilizado o teste paramétrico de análise de variância (ANOVA) um fator e o teste auxiliar de Tukey. Foi observado que não houve diferença entre os tratamentos com ponta diamantada, óxido de alumínio e enxaguatório fluoretado. O único grupo a se diferenciar dos demais foi o grupo controle que apresentou valores de resistência de união inferiores. Dentro das limitações de um trabalho in vitro, conclui-se que os tratamentos de superfície estudados são procedimentos indicados para melhorar a adesão dental frente à necessidade de restaurar uma LCNC. Non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) are defined by loss of dental structure at the cement/enamel junction involving three mechanisms of mechanical stress (tension), friction and erosion (chemical degradation). There are preventive and desensitizing treatments for the the main symptom of NCCLs, cervical dentin hypersensitivity (CDH), but in cases where there is loss of tooth structure greater than 1mm, a restorative intervention is necessary. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the bond strength of the eroded and abraded dentin modified with different pre-treatments and later restored with composite resin, through the microtensile test. For this, 40 sound human molars were selected, which had the occlusal portions sectioned until exposure of the dentin. The specimens underwent erosive and abrasive challenge in a 5-day cycling. After the challenges, the specimens received the surface treatments (n = 10): G1: control without treatment; G2: surface treatment with diamond tip; G3: sandblasting with aluminum oxide, G4: cycling with fluoridated rinse Elmex Erosion. After this, the specimens were restored, sectioned on sticks and subjected to the microtensile test in a universal test machine at 0.5mm/min. For statistical analysis, the parametric analysis of variance (ANOVA) one factor and the Tukey auxiliary test were used. It was observed that there was no difference between treatments with diamond tip, aluminum oxide and fluoride. The only group to differentiate from the others was the control group that presented inferior bond strength values. Within the limitations of an in vitro work, it is concluded that the surface treatments studied are procedures indicated to improve dental adhesion in view of the need to restore NCCL.

Os materiais restauradores estão evoluindo rapidamente e novas técnicas de inserção do compósito na cavidade restauradora estão sendo propostos. Dependendo da técnica, poderá ocorrer maior ou menor formação de bolhas na restauração final. A incorporação de bolhas entre as camadas do material restaurador pode gerar uma maior degradação da restauração em virtude da menor obtenção de propriedades físico-mecânicas do material. Assim, a necessidade de estudos sobre a prevalência de bolhas em restaurações confeccionadas com diferentes técnicas de inserção se faz necessária para a melhor compreensão do uso e do manuseio dos materiais. O objetivo desse trabalho foi analisar a ocorrência de bolhas e o volume de espaços presentes no interior de restaurações com resina composta, inserida na cavidade dental através das técnicas restauradoras: incremental e bulk fill. Quarenta e oito dentes molares humanos (n=24, duas restaurações por dente) foram selecionados e, nestes, foram confeccionados dois preparos por dente, um em cada região proximal, com profundidade de 4mm, largura de 4mm e distância axio-proximal de 2mm. Posteriormente, foram restaurados de acordo com os grupos: FiltekTM One Bulk Fill Restorative (FOB; 3M Oral Care); FiltekTM Z350 XT (FXT; 3M Oral care); FiltekTM Bulk Fill Flowable Restorative (FBF+FXT; 3M Oral care) e FiltekTM Z350 XT Flow (FF+FXT; 3M Oral care) . As resinas fluidas foram cobertas com a resina FiltekTM Z350 XT (3M Oral Care). Após 24 horas, os dentes restaurados foram submetidos à ciclagem térmica (5.000 ciclos) e posteriormente foi realizada a Tomografia de Coerência Ótica (OCT). Através da análise das imagens obtidas pelo OCT foram medidos os valores de quantidade de bolhas e porcentagem de espaços presentes nas restaurações. Os dados da presença de bolhas foram analisados estatisticamente com o teste Qui-Quadrado, os dados de número de bolhas e porcentagem de espaços obtidos foram analisados com o teste de Kruskall Wallis e a comparação entre os grupos foi feita pelo método de Dunn , com nível de significância de 5%. FF+FXT, apresentou bolhas em todas as restaurações e foi significativamente maior quando comparado a FXT (p=0,015). FF+FXT apresentou quantidade significativamente maior de bolhas (p
