Background Retrospective analysis of morphological and functional outcomes after pars-plana vitrectomy and Silicone-Oil (SO) endotamponade in acute postoperative endophthalmitis (APOE). Methods Minimum follow-up was 6 months. Every included patient received best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) assessment, pre-operatively and at last follow-up. Spectralis OCT was used to investigate disorganization of inner (DRIL) and outer (DROL) retinal layers at 1, 3, 6 months and at last follow-up. OCT-A was performed to assess foveal avascular zone (FAZ) and vascular perfusion density (VPD) at 6 months and at last follow-up. Results Seventeen eyes were recruited. Postoperative findings: BCVA ≥ 20/40 (in 14 eyes); epiretinal membranes (13); hyperreflective epiretinal material soon after surgery in (6) SO-filled eyes; inner retinal layers atrophy (5); macular edema (2); DROL (4) with persistent EZ disruption at final visit (2); no significant difference between study and fellow eyes in central macular thickness, FAZ and VPD; VPD decreased in all cases with prominent disorganization of retinal architecture. Conclusion OCT changes after APOE can be persistent or completely/partially self-resolving and seems related to the outward progression path of the infection/inflammation from the vitreous cavity to the inner and outer retina, rather than to the surgery.

To reduce treatment burden and optimise patient outcomes in diabetic macular oedema, we present 1-year results from two phase 3 trials of faricimab, a novel angiopoietin-2 and vascular endothelial growth factor-A bispecific antibody.YOSEMITE and RHINE were randomised, double-masked, non-inferiority trials across 353 sites worldwide. Adults with vision loss due to centre-involving diabetic macular oedema were randomly assigned (1:1:1) to intravitreal faricimab 6·0 mg every 8 weeks, faricimab 6·0 mg per personalised treatment interval (PTI), or aflibercept 2·0 mg every 8 weeks up to week 100. PTI dosing intervals were extended, maintained, or reduced (every 4 weeks up to every 16 weeks) based on disease activity at active dosing visits. The primary endpoint was mean change in best-corrected visual acuity at 1 year, averaged over weeks 48, 52, and 56. Efficacy analyses included the intention-to-treat population (non-inferiority margin 4 Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study [ETDRS] letters); safety analyses included patients with at least one dose of study treatment. These trials are registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (YOSEMITE NCT03622580 and RHINE NCT03622593).3247 patients were screened for eligibility in YOSEMITE (n=1532) and RHINE (n=1715). After exclusions, 940 patients were enrolled into YOSEMITE between Sept 5, 2018, and Sept 19, 2019, and 951 patients were enrolled into RHINE between Oct 9, 2018, and Sept 20, 2019. These 1891 patients were randomly assigned to faricimab every 8 weeks (YOSEMITE n=315, RHINE n=317), faricimab PTI (n=313, n=319), or aflibercept every 8 weeks (n=312, n=315). Non-inferiority for the primary endpoint was achieved with faricimab every 8 weeks (adjusted mean vs aflibercept every 8 weeks in YOSEMITE 10·7 ETDRS letters [97·52% CI 9·4 to 12·0] vs 10·9 ETDRS letters [9·6 to 12·2], difference -0·2 ETDRS letters [-2·0 to 1·6]; RHINE 11·8 ETDRS letters [10·6 to 13·0] vs 10·3 ETDRS letters [9·1 to 11·4] letters, difference 1·5 ETDRS letters [-0·1 to 3·2]) and faricimab PTI (YOSEMITE 11·6 ETDRS letters [10·3 to 12·9], difference 0·7 ETDRS letters [-1·1 to 2·5]; RHINE 10·8 ETDRS letters [9·6 to 11·9], difference 0·5 ETDRS letters [-1·1 to 2·1]). Incidence of ocular adverse events was comparable between faricimab every 8 weeks (YOSEMITE n=98 [31%], RHINE n=137 [43%]), faricimab PTI (n=106 [34%], n=119 [37%]), and aflibercept every 8 weeks (n=102 [33%], n=113 [36%]).Robust vision gains and anatomical improvements with faricimab were achieved with adjustable dosing up to every 16 weeks, demonstrating the potential for faricimab to extend the durability of treatment for patients with diabetic macular oedema.F Hoffmann-La Roche.

Faricimab is a bispecific antibody that acts through dual inhibition of both angiopoietin-2 and vascular endothelial growth factor A. We report primary results of two phase 3 trials evaluating intravitreal faricimab with extension up to every 16 weeks for neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD).TENAYA and LUCERNE were randomised, double-masked, non-inferiority trials across 271 sites worldwide. Treatment-naive patients with nAMD aged 50 years or older were randomly assigned (1:1) to intravitreal faricimab 6·0 mg up to every 16 weeks, based on protocol-defined disease activity assessments at weeks 20 and 24, or aflibercept 2·0 mg every 8 weeks. Randomisation was performed through an interactive voice or web-based response system using a stratified permuted block randomisation method. Patients, investigators, those assessing outcomes, and the funder were masked to group assignments. The primary endpoint was mean change in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) from baseline averaged over weeks 40, 44, and 48 (prespecified non-inferiority margin of four letters), in the intention-to-treat population. Safety analyses included patients who received at least one dose of study treatment. These trials are registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (TENAYA NCT03823287 and LUCERNE NCT03823300).Across the two trials, 1329 patients were randomly assigned between Feb 19 and Nov 19, 2019 (TENAYA n=334 faricimab and n=337 aflibercept), and between March 11 and Nov 1, 2019 (LUCERNE n=331 faricimab and n=327 aflibercept). BCVA change from baseline with faricimab was non-inferior to aflibercept in both TENAYA (adjusted mean change 5·8 letters [95% CI 4·6 to 7·1] and 5·1 letters [3·9 to 6·4]; treatment difference 0·7 letters [-1·1 to 2·5]) and LUCERNE (6·6 letters [5·3 to 7·8] and 6·6 letters [5·3 to 7·8]; treatment difference 0·0 letters [-1·7 to 1·8]). Rates of ocular adverse events were comparable between faricimab and aflibercept (TENAYA n=121 [36·3%] vs n=128 [38·1%], and LUCERNE n=133 [40·2%] vs n=118 [36·2%]).Visual benefits with faricimab given at up to 16-week intervals demonstrates its potential to meaningfully extend the time between treatments with sustained efficacy, thereby reducing treatment burden in patients with nAMD.F Hoffmann-La Roche.

Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is the second most common retinal vascular disorder, after diabetic retinopathy. Most patients suffering RVO develop some degree of visual loss consequent to retinal complications such as edema and microhemorrhages. Even if some risk factors for RVO have been identified, the clinical outcome of RVO remains highly unpredictable because studies investigating potential prognostic markers for visual improvement are lacking. Cyanocobalamin belongs to the group of B vitamins and plays a role in homocysteine metabolism; however, cyanocobalamin deficiency associates with an increase of some toxic bioproducts involved in endothelial injury and platelet activation independent of homocysteine levels. We retrospectively evaluated the levels of vitamin B12 at diagnosis in 203 patients with RVO, and in a parallel cohort of 120 age- and sex-matched patients without RVO from an internal medicine ward, and correlated them with visual outcome at follow-up (median time 150 days, IQR 30-210). In patients with RVO, vitamin B12 levels at diagnosis were significantly lower than in controls and independently predicted worse clinical outcome at multivariate analysis (OR 3.2; CIs 1.2-8.2; p = 0.015). Our data suggest the opportunity to prospectively evaluate the effect on visual outcome of cyanocobalamin supplementation in RVO patients.

Purpose The aim of our study is to confirm the utility of warm compresses (WC) and artificial tears (AT) in meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) management and to understand if its association with topical cyclosporine A (CsA) improves outcomes. Methods Patients with diagnosis of MGD-related dry eye were evaluated. In this prospective, randomized, double-masked study, patients were randomized in two treatments: AT plus WC (group A), and AT plus WC plus CsA 0.05% ophthalmic emulsion (group B). At baseline and at 1, 3, and 6 months, Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire was completed, and tear evaluation (BUT, Schirmer and osmolarity test), ocular surface evaluation (fluorescein and lissamine green staining), clinical (Shimazaki grading) and in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) evaluation of rete ridges (RRs) were performed. Results A total of 40 eyes, 20 in each group, completed the study. Analysis of OSDI, tear test, ocular surface evaluation and clinical grading of MG showed significant improvement at 6 months, whereas no difference was found between the two groups at 6 months. The analysis of IVCM showed significant improvement in both groups, but significantly better results in group B were found compared to group A at 6 months. Conclusion WC performed 3 times daily during the 1st month and once daily afterwards, in addition to AT, were useful to manage the obstruction of MG and related signs and symptoms. Additional effects of CsA were visible in IVCM only at 6 months. IVCM is an effective tool to monitor treatments in MGD.

Purpose To report the wide-field choroidal vascularity up to the mid-equator area in diabetic retinopathy (DR) subjects using wide-field optical coherence tomography (WF-OCT). Design Prospective, Cross-sectional study. Participants Forty-seven eyes of 25 DR subjects. Methods WF-OCT images (55 degrees) were obtained using Spectralis HRA + OCT (Heidelberg Engineering, Germany) in extremes of gazes in all quadrants and manual montages were created to obtain wide field images up to mid equator. A previously reported semi-automated algorithm was used to calculate choroidal vascularity profile (CVI). Regression analysis was performed to identify the factors influencing CVI. Results Forty-seven eyes from 25 patients were enrolled in the study. The mean age was 68.4 ± 10.6 years. The refractive error (spherical equivalent) ranged from −2.25 to +3.75 diopters. Most common DR grade among study subjects was moderate NPDR (29.41%) and 74.5% eyes had diabetic macular edema (DME). The mean CVI in the macular area (58.29 ± 3.63) was significantly lower than in any of the other fundus areas (all p ˂ 0.01). The maximum CVI was seen in the nasal region (66.60 ± 5.61), followed by temporal (65.69 ± 3.81), superior (65.01 ± 4.87), and inferior (63.80 ± 5.42). The vertical macular area had the least coefficient of variation (CV) of CVI (0.06) while the inferior quadrant had the highest CV (0.08). Conclusion The current study describes the CVI profile on WF-OCT in DR eyes up to mid-equator. The significant increase of the CVI compared to healthy subjects and its significant regional variations introduce this novel quantitative parameter as a reliable biomarker of the diabetes-induced choroidal microangiopathy.

Purpose To compare the effect of trehalose 3%/hyaluronic acid 0.15% vs hyaluronic acid 0.15% eyedrops in reducing ocular surface inflammation after cataract surgery. Setting Perugia, Italy. Design Randomized, prospective study. Methods Patients with healthy ocular surface were enrolled. Tear break-up time (TBUT), Schirmer test, corneal fluorescein staining (CFS), ocular surface disease index (OSDI) and in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) were performed preoperatively and at 1 months, 4 months, and 8 months postoperatively. Patients were randomly assigned to receive trehalose 3%/hyaluronic acid 0.15% eyedrops (Group A), hyaluronic acid 0.15% eyedrops (Group B), or no treatment (Group C). Results 98 patients were randomized as follows: 33 in Group A, 33 in Group B, and 32 in Group C. Schirmer test increased at 1-month follow-up in Group A and unchanged in Groups B and C. TBUT and CFS increased at 1-month follow-up in Group A and after 8 months in Groups B and C. OSDI score decreased at 1-month follow-up in Group A and at in Groups B and C. IVCM showed a reduction in the number of nerve fibers of the subbasal nerve plexus at 1 month in all groups and progressively increased to preoperative levels at 4 months in Group A, and at 8 months in Groups B and C. Tortuosity and reflectivity of subbasal plexus progressively decreased to became significant at 4-month follow-up in Group A whereas increased at 1-month follow-up and become normal at 8-month follow-up in Groups B and C. Langerhans cells and activated stromal keratocytes were higher in Groups B and C throughout the follow-up with a significantly lower density of hyperreflective stromal cells in Group A. Conclusions Trehalose 3%/hyaluronic acid 0.15% eyedrops were effective in reducing inflammation and dry-eye symptoms.

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is the most frequent rheumatic disease of childhood and uveitis is its most common extra-articular manifestation. JIA-associated uveitis (JIA-U) is one of the main causes of visual impairment in children and represents a major challenge for pediatrician and ophthalmologist, due to its insidious onset and sight-threatening complications. Topical glucocorticoids are the first line of treatment, followed by conventional disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs), usually methotrexate (MTX). In recent years, new biological drugs targeting specific molecules involved in disease pathogenesis, have significantly improved the prognosis of the disease, especially for cases refractory to conventional therapies. In this review we discuss the role of biological agents in JIA-U, focusing on cytokine blockers and cell-targeted therapies aimed to control ocular inflammation.

Purpose Prospective, randomised, open-label, comparative study to evaluate efficacy of trehalose/sodium hyaluronate eye drops for post-operative discomfort and tear film stability in patients undergoing cataract surgery. Methods Patients with healthy ocular surface, subclinical, or mild dry eye were enrolled. Tear breakup time (TBUT), Schirmer test, dry eye symptoms, corneal fluorescein staining (CFS), and ocular surface disease (OSDI) evaluation were performed pre-operatively and at two and four weeks after surgery. Patients were assigned to receive trehalose/sodium hyaluronate eye drops b.i.d (Group A), or 0.9% unpreserved sodium chloride eye drops b.i.d for 4 weeks (Group B). Results One hundred and thirty-five patients were randomised, 66 patients in Group A (73.2 ± 4.5 years) and 69 patients in Group B (74.3 ± 3.8 years), 60.8% females. Fifteen patients (8 Group A) were lost at follow-up. Pre-operatively, no between-group differences were observed, and TBUT increased in Group A between the pre-operative and 2 and 4 week evaluations and was higher in group A than in Group B at 4 weeks. Schirmer test and CFS showed an improvement only in Group A four weeks post-operatively. In Group A an improvement was observed after two and four weeks in foreign body and puncture sensation, whilst a difference in blinking discomfort was observed after four weeks. In Group B we observed an improvement in puncture sensation two and four weeks after surgery. Mean OSDI scores differences between the two groups were significant at four weeks. Conclusions Trehalose/sodium hyaluronate eye drops were effective in reducing signs and symptoms of dry eye and improving tear film stability

This chapter aims to provide a complete knowledge over the primary intraocular lymphoma (PIOL) and a correct clinical approach towards this rare condition, to avoid delays in diagnosis, which is considered the most important prognostic factor. A PIOL arises with no specific symptoms and could mimic both inflammatory and non-inflammatory ocular conditions. Also known as reticulum cell sarcoma in the past, PIOL is an ocular malignant condition, with a strong bond with primary central system lymphoma (PCNSL). This linkage is underlined by the fact that approximately 30% of the patients with PIOL have also PCNSL at presentation, while 45–90% will develop PCSNL in the following months. A correct diagnosis is currently achieved by the means of many different techniques: cytology, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, molecular analysis, and cytokines assay. Treatment of this condition has been completely revolutionized with the introduction of monoclonal antibodies directed against specific proteins present on the surface of lymphomatous cells.

Purpose: To report the wide-field choroidal vessel analysis in central serous chrorioretinopathy (CSCR) and their fellow eyes. Methods: Wide-field optical coherence tomography (WF-OCT) images (55°) were obtained using Spectralis HRA + OCT (Heidelberg Engineering, Germany) in extremes of gazes in all quadrants and manual montages were created to obtain wide field images up to equator. Choroidal thickness (CT), large choroidal vessel layer thickness (LCVT), and choroidal vascularity index (CVI) were calculated in macular segment (twice the disc to fovea distance) and all four quadrants. Regression analysis was performed to identify the factors influencing CVI. Results: Thirty-one patients of CSCR including 39 eyes of CSCR (32 chronic, 7 acute) and 23 fellow eyes were analyzed. CT and LCVT were significantly higher in submacular choroid than all extramacular segments in both CSCR and fellow eyes (all p values Conclusion: CVI shows significant regional variation with macular segment showing the lowest CVI whereas nasal segments have highest CVI in both CSCR and their fellow eyes. On the contrary, submacular segment has highest CT and LCVT with taper towards periphery in both CSCR and fellow eyes.

Purpose To evaluate the safety and efficacy of corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) performed on overlaying a corneal lenticule to thin recipient corneas of progressive keratoconus (KC) patients. Methods In this study were enrolled eyes of patients affected by progressive KC with a minimum corneal thickness less than 400 µm, after overlaying a lenticule of human corneal stroma prepared with the femtosecond laser. The lenticules used were 100 µm thick and of 8.5 mm diameter in all the cases. Both the host cornea and the lenticules were subjected to epithelial debridement. CXL was carried out according to the standard protocol. Visual acuity, refraction, slit-lamp examination, endothelial cell density, pachymetry and keratometry, anterior segment tomography (AS-OCT) and confocal microscopy were evaluated preoperatively and at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months postoperatively. Results CXL was performed in 10 eyes of 8 patients (main age 23), corneal thickness range 379–414 µm, mean 387.6 µm. One patient was lost at follow-up. In all other cases, visual acuity and the endothelial cell density remained stable over a 12-month follow-up. Preoperative mean K1 and mean K2 were 46.91 ± 1.9 and 50.75 ± 2.93, respectively, and at 12 months mean K1 was 47.36 ± 2.66 and mean K2 50.53 ± 3.35. The AS-OCT clearly showed a demarcation line in all patients at 1, 3 (mean depth 283 µm and 267 µm, respectively) and in some cases at 6 months. Reduced keratocyte density and stromal oedema were observed immediately up to 1 month after treatment, while a slight subepithelial haze was present at 1-month and completely disappeared by 6 months. Conclusion This new technique seems to offer a therapeutic opportunity for young patients suffering from progressive KC with very thin corneas, in which the standard treatment is not indicate, and delay or avoid the need for a corneal transplant.

To perform an automated functional assessment of retinal and choroidal microvasculature in eyes with low-grade diabetic retinopathy (DR) using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) and to identify potential perfusion changes in case of early vascular damage. This is an observational, case–control study of consecutive diabetic patients with level 20 DR severity scale score and age-matched healthy subjects. A prototypal OCT-angiography was used to obtain the OCT-angiograms of the superficial capillary plexus (SCP), deep capillary plexus (DCP) and choriocapillaris (CC) layer. A validated automated microstructural analysis provided data on SCP, DCP and CC vascular perfusion density (VPD). A comparative assessment between different vascular layers and different groups was performed. Twenty-nine diabetic patients (7 females, 24%) and 20 healthy controls were enrolled. VPD values were significantly lower in the DCP (25.1% vs. 26.5%; p = 0.04) and CC (71.2% vs. 86.6%; p = 0.0001) of diabetic patients compared with controls. A statistically significant negative linear correlation was reported between CC VPD and DCP VPD in diabetic patients; at the reverse, a positive linear correlation between the same parameters was noticed in controls. Retinal and choroidal vascular networks, although distinct entities, seem functionally interconnected: varying the degree of perfusion may be a mutual compensatory mechanism in response to an ischemic injury.

To compare, using laser flare meter (LFM), the efficacy of topical nepafenac 0.1, % and diclofenac 0.1% ophthalmic solution in the control of anterior chamber inflammation after uncomplicated cataract surgery.Patients undergoing phacoemulsification for age-related cataract were recruited. Complete evaluation with visual acuity, slit-lamp examination, endothelial cell density, intraocular pressure, retinal tomography and anterior chamber flare evaluation was performed before surgery and 1, 15, 30 and 60 days after surgery. Patients were randomly assigned to receive topical diclofenac 0.1% 4 times a day for four weeks or nepafenac 0.1% 3 times a day for three weeks in addition to topical steroids and antibiotic.64 (31 males, mean age 77.3 ± 5.9) patients were enrolled. Half of them were randomly assigned to group A (diclofenac 0.1%) and half to group B (nepafenac 0.1%). There was a statistically significant visual acuity improvement postoperatively in both groups, with no statistical difference between the groups. Intraocular pressure, corneal thickness, endothelial cells count and macular thickness parameters didn't significantly vary between before and after surgery. One-day after surgery, aqueous flare was significantly higher (22,27 ± 9,25 ph/ms in group A and 22,36 ± 7,47 in group B) than before surgery (14,59 ± 7,16 ph/ms in group A and 11,84 ± 4,44 in group B) in both groups, then declining in the first month and reaching preoperative levels again by 2 months in both groups. In group B, LFM values at 15 and 30 days after surgery were significantly lower (13,59 ± 4,80 and 14,07 ± 5,01) than in group A (17,00 ± 6,97 and 16,96 ± 6,13).Nepafenac ensured a better inflammation control than diclofenac during the first month.

Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) affects premature newborns, and it can cause childhood blindness and visual impairment if untreated. The understanding of the pathogenetic role of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) has led to development of therapeutic strategies such as intravitreal anti-VEGF drugs. We reported drug efficacy and ROP recurrence rates, extrapolated from the reviewed studies. Association of Pegabtanib and laser photocoagulation confers efficacy in the regression of ROP stage 3 plus in zone I / II in 89.7% of treated eyes, reducing the recurrence rate to 14.6% compared to 50% of laser therapy alone. Irrespective of the dose, Ranibizumab demonstrated average efficacy greater than 75% on regression of active disease with the highest rates of the dose of 0.1 mg (92.5%). The recurrence, on the other hand, is the highest among this new anti-VEGF agents and is around an average of 41.5%, which records the highest values in the case of Aggressive Posterior Rop (APROP). Aflibercept at a dose of 1 mg demonstrated average efficacy of about 81.9% of treated infants, analyzing significantly fewer studies than Ranibizumab. The recurrence rate stands at an average of 28.9%, especially in the later forms of ROP. Using a dose of 0.25 mg of Conbercept, the disease regression rate is currently on average 83%, with an average recurrence rate of 15.24%, the peak of which was observed in cases of ROP in zone I. Further studies are needed to prove safety at long term, because,at the moment, only short-term data are available.

The country-level data reported herein comprise the largest and first observational study of PF tafluprost/timolol FC therapy in Italy.Methods: An observational, multicenter, prospective study included adult Italian patients with open-angle glaucoma (OAG) or ocular hypertension (OHT) demonstrating insufficient response or poor tolerability with topical prostaglandin analogue (PGA) or beta-blocker monotherapy. Treatment was switched to PF tafluprost/timolol FC therapy at baseline. Primary endpoint was the absolute mean IOP change from baseline at Month 6. Exploratory and safety endpoints included change in IOP at Weeks 4 and 12, ocular signs, symptom severity and reporting of adverse events (AEs).Results: Overall, 160 OAG/OHT patients were included. Mean ± standard deviation IOP was reduced from 19.6 ± 3.6 mmHg at baseline to 14.5 ± 2.6 mmHg at Month 6 (reduction of 5.1 ± 3.7 mmHg; 24.1%; p < 0.0001). IOP reduction was also statistically significant at Week 4 (23.1%; p < 0.0001) and Week 12 (24.7%; p < 0.0001). Based on data cutoff values for mean IOP change of ≥ 20%, ≥ 25%, ≥ 30% and ≥ 35%, respective Month 6 responder rates were 68.1%, 48.7%, 36.2% and 26.9%. Most ocular signs and symptoms were significantly reduced in severity from baseline at Month 6. Two non-serious and mild AEs were reported during the study period, among which, one AE was treatment-related (eyelash growth). &#x2003Conclusion: Italian OAG and OHT patients demonstrated a significant IOP reduction from baseline at Week 4 that was maintained over a 6-month period following a switch from topical PGA or beta-blocker monotherapy to PF tafluprost/timolol FC therapy. Purpose To report the individual retinal layer thicknesses up to mid-equator in patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR) using Spectralis (Heidelberg Engineering, Heidelberg, Germany) wide-field optical coherence tomography (OCT). Methods Retinal layers were segmented using a custom designed semi-automated algorithm, where reference points were marked by the examiner to enable software to automatically compute the thickness values of each retinal sublayer at an interval of 1 mm from reference points. The values of individual retinal thicknesses in eyes with varying severity of DR were compared with the values of healthy subjects. Generalized estimating equation was performed to compensate for inclusion of both eyes of patients. Results A total of 64 patients (119 eyes) with a mean age of 68.97 ± 10.27 years were included. PurposeTo identify the factors predicting the visual and anatomical outcomes in eyes with central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) through 12 months.MethodsPatients with diagnosis of CSCR, either acute or chronic, were included in this multicentric, retrospective study. Demographic factors; systemic risk factors; central macular thickness (CMT), subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT), linear extent of ellipsoid zone (EZ) and interdigitation zone damage on optical coherence tomography; details of leak on fluorescein angiography and indocyanine green angiography were included as predictors of anatomical and visual outcomes. Regression analysis was performed to correlate the changes in best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and resolution of disease activity.ResultsA total of 231 eyes of 201 patients with a mean age (49.7±11.8 years) were analysed. A total of 97 and 134 eyes were classified as acute and chronic CSCR. Sildenafil citrate, a selective oral phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitor, is a widely used drug for erectile dysfunction that acts by elevating cGMP levels and causing smooth muscle relaxation. It also has 10% activity against PDE6, a key enzyme in phototransduction cascade in the retina. Recent ocular imaging developments have further revealed the influence of sildenafil on ocular hemodynamics, particularly choroidal perfusion. Choroidal thickness is increased, and choroidal perfusion is also enhanced by autoregulatory mechanisms that are further dependent on age and microvascular abnormalities. Studies demonstrating high intraocular pressure via a “parallel pathway” from increased choroidal volume and blood flow to the ciliary body have challenged previous concepts. Another new observation is the effect of sildenafil on bipolar cells and cyclic-nucleotide gated channels. We discuss potential deleterious effects (central serous chorioretinopathy, glaucoma, ischemic optic neuropathy, and risks to recessive carriers of retinitis pigmentosa), potential beneficial effects (ameliorate choroidal ischemia, prevent thickening of Bruch membrane, and promote recovery of the ellipsoid zone) in macular degeneration, as well as potential drug interactions of sildenafil.

Purpose: This case study describes the implantation of a Xen45 Gel Stent in a patient that had previously undergone Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK). Glaucoma might worsen after corneal transplant, and while medical treatment is the first-line therapy to achieve intraocular pressure (IOP) control, a surgical approach is required when medication does not reach the target IOP. Methods: In 2017, the patient underwent treatment in both eyes with ocular hypotensive eye drops for pseudoexfoliative (PXF) glaucoma. In May 2017, DSAEK was performed on the right eye because of the presence of a pseudophakic bullous keratopathy. An increase in IOP, resistant to medical treatment, was observed after the corneal transplant. In November 2017, a Xen45 Gel Stent was implanted. Results: The patient had a positive outcome with a Xen45 Gel Stent implant in surgical glaucoma treatment after DSAEK. The case demonstrated excellent postoperative IOP control, stable vision and a healthy ocular graft at short-term and long-term follow-ups. Conclusion: Studies with larger numbers of patients in this particular form of therapy are required. Nevertheless, Xen45 Gel Stent implantation appears to be a promising option in preventing or limiting glaucoma in patients who have previously undergone DSAEK. It is a brief, minimally invasive procedure with reduced postoperative inflammation, faster visual recovery and a lower risk of graft damage or hypotony, even in the case of PXF glaucoma.

Purpose To evaluate choroidal vascularity index (CVI) in patients developing mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase (MEK) inhibitor-associated retinopathy (MEKAR). Methods In this prospective observational study, extensive ophthalmic examination was performed, including enhanced-depth-imaging-optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT). EDI-OCT scans of patients receiving Cobimetinib, taken at baseline and at MEKAR manifestation, were considered for choroid analysis. Choroidal thickness (CT) was measured on high-resolution b-scans passing through the fovea at three different locations. Same scans were therefore imported for binarization into a previously reported software and CVI was calculated as the ratio of luminal area (LA) to total choroid area (TCA). Results When compared to baseline, eyes with MEKAR (14 eyes) did not show significative CT variation in subfoveal region (p = 0,57), 750-µm-nasal to the fovea (p = 0,08) and 750-µm-temporal to the fovea (p = 0,07). Similarly, there were no statistically significant differences for TCA (p = 0.54), LA (p = 0.85), stromal area (SA) (p = 0.13), LA/SA (p = 0.34) and CVI (p = 0.47). Best-corrected visual acuity was significantly reduced at fluid accumulation when compared to baseline values (p = 0.03), with complete recovery after fluid resolution (p = 0.73). Conclusion Multiple parameters reflecting the status of the choroid seemed not influenced by Cobimetinib administration. Retinal pigment epithelium toxic disfunction likely represents the crucial step in MEKAR pathogenesis.

Background/objectives: To compare the number of eye surgical procedures performed in Italy in the 2 months following the beginning of lockdown (study period) because of COVID-19 epidemic with those performed in the two earlier months of the same year (intra-year control) and in the period of 2019 corresponding to the lockdown (inter-year control). Methods: Retrospective analysis of surgical procedures carried out at 39 Academic hospitals. A distinction was made between elective and urgent procedures. Intravitreal injections were also considered. Percentages for all surgical procedures and incidence rate ratios (IRR) for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) events were calculated. A p value Results: A total of 20,886 versus 55,259 and 56,640 patients underwent surgery during the lockdown versus intra-and inter-year control periods, respectively. During the lockdown, only 70% of patients for whom an operation/intravitreal injection was recommended, finally underwent surgery; the remaining patients did not attend because afraid of getting infected at the hospital (23%), taking public transportation (6.5%), or unavailable swabs (0.5%). Elective surgeries were reduced by 96.2% and 96.4%, urgent surgeries by 49.7% and 50.2%, and intravitreal injections by 48.5% and 48.6% in the lockdown period in comparison to intra-year and inter-year control periods, respectively. IRRs for RRDs during lockdown dropped significantly in comparison with intra- and inter-year control periods (CI: 0.65–0.80 and 0.61–0.75, respectively, p Conclusion: This study provides a quantitative analysis of the reduction of eye surgical procedures performed in Italy because of the COVID-19 epidemic.

Aim of the study: Hydrocortisone is a soft steroid with low anti-inflammatory properties and a short duration of action, used to manage several ocular conditions. The clinical benefits and side effects associated with hydrocortisone are well documented, but its basic pharmacokinetic in the eye is yet to be fully elucidated. The purpose of this study is to investigate the anterior chamber penetration capabilities of hydrocortisone when used in different concentrations as eye drops treatment. Materials and Methods: This is a double-blind, single-center, randomized clinical trial performed at the Department of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Perugia (Italy) on consecutive patients who have undergone phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation. Patients were randomly assigned on the morning of surgery to receive a single instillation of 0.33% (group A) or 0.001% (group B) hydrocortisone sodium phosphate solution. Group of patients C did not receive any treatment and was used to measure the hydrocortisone endogenous levels. Before surgery, one aliquot of aqueous humor for each patient was aspirated. The time of collection for each sample was recorded. Hydrocortisone concentrations were then stratified into six interval classes of 30 minutes each. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE A reduction of retinal thickness and an alteration of retinal perfusion have been found in Alzheimer disease (AD). Nowadays, retinal layers and retinal perfusion can be evaluated by means of noninvasive imaging techniques, namely, optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT-angiography (OCT-A). Here, we have compared the retinal thickness and the perfusion index, measured by means of OCT and OCT-A, in patients with mild cognitive impairment due to AD (MCI-AD) and in age- and sex-matched cognitively healthy controls. METHODS Twenty-four MCI-AD patients and 13 control subjects were enrolled. MCI-AD patients underwent lumbar puncture; all of them showed a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) profile compatible with AD. OCT was used for evaluating retinal volumes and thicknesses, whereas with OCT-A we measured fractal dimension (FD), vascular perfusion density (VPD), and vessel length density (VLD) of superficial capillary plexus (SCP), intermediate capillary plexus (ICP), deep capillary plexus (DCP), and choriocapillaris. The comparisons between groups were made after adjustment for age, diabetes, and hypertension. RESULTS A significant reduction of SCP-VLD (p = 0.012), ICP-VPD (p = 0.015), ICP-VLD (p = 0.004), DCP-VPD (p = 0.012), and DCP-VLD (p = 0.009) was found in MCI-AD patients compared to controls. Conversely, FD was higher in MCI-AD than in controls (p = 0.044). CSF Aβ42/total tau negatively correlated with FD (r = -0.51, p = 0.010). CONCLUSIONS OCT-A might have a potential role in detecting new noninvasive biomarkers for early AD detection. Retinal VPD might identify amyloid angiopathy-related chronic injury, and FD could show early vessel recruitment as a compensative mechanism at disease onset. Further studies will be needed to confirm these findings.

Purpose: To evaluate the surgical outcomes and feasibility of a novel approach for scleral-fixation using a single-piece acrylic foldable Carlevale lens (Soleko). Methods: Eighteen eyes of 18 patients with aphakia, dislocated IOL, subluxated lens, anisometropia, perforated trauma, and retinal detachment who underwent IOL implantation with a Carlevale lens were evaluated. All the patients underwent a standard ophthalmologic examination. Anterior segment (AS)-OCT was used postoperatively to check plugs positioning and IOL tilt. Results: Mean patients age was 73 ± 19 years. Mean follow-up was 11.2 ± 4.1 months. Mean axial length was 23.7 ± 1.65 mm, white-to-white distance was 11.74 ± 0.40 mm, and axial length was 23.67 ± 1.65 mm. Refractive spherical equivalent prediction error was −0.31 ± 0.71D. Mean IOL tilt was 2.2° ± 1.6° and plugs were placed within the sclera. Five patients had aphakia, five in-the-bag IOL subluxation, three in-the-bag IOL luxation, one high residual myopia after previous verisyse implant, one Uveitis-Glaucoma-Hyphema syndrome, one perforating trauma with phacodonesis, one intraocular foreign body and retinal detachment, two lens subluxation. One eye developed cystoid macular edema which disappeared with topical steroids and FANS. No other complications were observed throughout the follow-up. Conclusion: Carlevale lens (Soleko) appears to be a viable option for both anterior and posterior segment surgeons in the management of complex cases providing less challenging maneuvers which lead to a good lens self-centration and minimal risk of haptic rupture and/or dislocation. The lens seems to offer a good compartmentalization between the anterior and posterior chamber reducing the risk of an inflammatory response.

Transparency represents the functional phenotype of eye lens. A number of defined steps including quiescence, proliferation, migration and cell differentiation culminates in cell elongation and organelle degradation, allowing the light to reach the retina. HOPS (Hepatocyte Odd Protein Shuttling)/TMUB1 (Trans Membrane Ubiquitin-like containing protein 1) is a nucleo-cytoplasmic shuttling protein, highly expressed both in vivo and in vitro proliferating systems, bearing a ubiquitin-like domain. The present study shows HOPS expression during the phases of lens cell proliferation and fiber differentiation, and its localisation in lens compartments. In lens, HOPS localises mainly in the nucleus of central epithelial cells. During mitosis, HOPS/TMUB1 shuttles to the cytoplasm and returns to the nucleus at the end of mitosis. The differentiating cells share distinct HOPS/TMUB1 localisation in transitional zone depending on the differentiation phases. HOPS/TMUB1 is observed in lens cortex and nucleus. Here, it is attached to fibers, having a structural function with crystallin proteins, probably acting in the ubiquitin–proteasome system.

Purpose: To assess the incidence of normal vision following anatomically successful macular hole surgery and associated clinical variables. Methods: Multicentre, retrospective chart review. Preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative clinical data were extracted from electronic medical records from seven European vitreoretinal units. Inclusion criteria were as follows: eyes undergoing primary vitrectomy for idiopathic full-thickness macular hole from January 2015 to January 2018; postoperative macular hole closure confirmed by spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT); preoperative pseudophakia or phakic eyes receiving combined cataract surgery; one-year follow-up. The primary outcome was ‘normal vision’ defined as a final best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) ≥ 20/25. Univariate, multivariate and decision-tree analyses were conducted to evaluate the clinical variables associated with ‘normal vision’. Odds ratios (OR) and confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. Results: Of 327 eligible cases, 91 (27.8%) achieved ‘normal vision’ at 1year. To investigate the surgical outcomes of 2 different scleral fixation techniques of the new single-piece foldable acrylic Carlevale lens (Soleko) and to compare our results with previous reports of the literature. A retrospective, non-randomized comparative study involving 2 series of patients who underwent 2 different scleral fixation techniques of Carlevale lens was performed. Minimum follow-up of 3 months was requested for inclusion in the study. All the patients underwent a standard ophthalmologic examination including best correct visual acuity, measurement of intraocular pressure, anterior segment, and fundus examination. In the first technique (group 1), plugs were externalized through a 23 gauge sclerotomy and placed within 2 scleral pockets. In the second technique (group 2), plugs were externalized through a 25-gauge sclerotomy and covered by 2 scleral flaps. For an estimation of the refractive prediction error, the postoperative spherical equivalent of objective refraction was calculated (IOL Master 750, Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Jena, Germany). Spectral domain optical coherence tomography (Spectralis HRA+OCT2, Heidelberg Engineering, Heidelberg, Germany) of anterior segment was used to check plugs positioning postoperatively. Twenty-three eyes in group 1 and 9 eyes in group 2 were included. Preoperative diagnosis was aphakia, dislocated posterior chamber intra ocular lens, dislocated lens, anisometropia, Uveitis-Glaucoma-Hyphema syndrome, perforating trauma with dislocated intra ocular lens, and open globe injury with dislocated intra ocular lens. Respectively, in groups 1 and 2, refractive spherical equivalent prediction error was –0,31 ± 0,74 D and –0,27 ± 0,80 D, and postoperative best-corrected visual acuity was 0,42 ± 0,31 logMAR and 0,47 ± 0,45 logMAR. In group 1, 1 eye developed cystoid macular edema, 1 eye vitreous haemorrhage, and 3 eyes showed plugs located outside the scleral pockets under the conjunctiva. Rupture of 1 of the 2 tips of the plug was observed in 1 patient of group 1 during the externalization. Carlevale lens is a scleral fixated intra ocular lens specifically designed for posterior chamber implantation that could be successfully managed without any significant difference between the 2 surgical techniques, and appears approachable for anterior and posterior segment surgeons. A 25-gauge sclerotomy should be preferred with the aim of a sutureless surgery regardless the technique employed.

Purpose To compare the 12 months visual and anatomical outcomes of treatment-naive neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) patients diagnosed by optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) compared with fluorescein angiography (FA)/indocyanine green angiography (ICGA), after anti-VEGF treatment in a real-world setting. Methods Monocentric, observational, parallel-group study of nAMD patients diagnosed with either FA/ICGA or non-invasive OCT-A methods. Patients were treated with a fixed dosing regimen of intravitreal ranibizumab or aflibercept and followed up for 12 months. Primary outcomes were the 12 months functional (BCVA) and anatomical (CST reduction) gains between the two groups. The stratification of BCVA and CST gains by type of neovascular lesion and by anti-VEGF treatment was also assessed. Results Seventy-two patients received FA/ICGA for the initial diagnosis of nAMD, while 73 received OCT-A. Overall, the mean BCVA gain at 12 months was 11.5 ± 9.6 letters. There were no statistically significant differences between the invasive and non-invasive imaging groups in BCVA gain (p = 0.87) or CST reduction (p = 0.76). No statistically significant outcome differences between different lesion types and the two drugs were observed. Conclusion In a real-world setting, nAMD patients diagnosed with OCT-A showed meaningful improvements in visual and anatomical parameters during 12 months of treatment, without significant differences with those diagnosed by invasive modalities.

Purpose: To quantitatively assess retinal neovascularizations (RNVs) in proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) before and after photocoagulative laser treatment (PLT) using Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCT-A). Methods: Consecutive patients with PDR were examined with fluorescein angiography (FA) and OCT-A before and after PLT. Baseline and after-treatment FA images were quantitatively analyzed to assess both the RNVs area and leakage area. On OCT-A RNVs area, vascular perfusion density (VPD), vessel length density (VLD) and fractal dimension were computed. VPD of the full-retina OCT-A underneath the RNV was determined to evaluate potential laser-induced changes in vascular perfusion. Results: Fifteen eyes of 13 patients with PDR were enrolled. The mean area of the RNVs was 0.47 ± 0.50 mm2 in the baseline OCT-A and 0.32 ± 0.40 mm2 in the post-treatment assessment ( p = 0.0002). The mean RNV VPD of RNV was 2% ± 4% in pre-treatment and 1% ± 1% for the post-treatment ( p = 0.0001). The mean VLD of RNV was 7.26 ± 1.53 at baseline and 6.64 ± 1.65 in the post treatment ( p = 0.0002). A significant difference in terms of mean RNVs area and VPD reduction between eyes that needed additional treatment and those that did not (~40% vs ~20%; p Conclusion: The quantitative OCT-A assessment of laser-induced changes of RNVs can be a useful non-invasive approach for determining treatment efficacy. A reduction of RNVs area or VPD ⩾ 40% might reveal those eyes that won’t require additional treatment. Retinal perfusion impairment seemed to progress independently from the treatment.

Background Increased lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)] has been associated with enhanced risk of cardiovascular events and more recently with venous thromboembolism. However, there is inconclusive data on the association between enhanced Lp(a) and retinal vein occlusion (RVO). We aimed to assess the role of Lp(a) in RVO. Methods We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of the studies addressing the role of Lp(a) in RVO. A systematic literature search was performed to identify all published papers reporting Lp(a) levels. Main outcome measures consisted of Lp(a) levels in patients with (cases) or without (controls) RVO. Results We included 13 studies for a total of 1,040 cases and 16,648 controls. Lp(a) levels above normal limits were associated with RVO (OR 2.38, 95% CI 1.7–3.34) and patients with RVO had higher Lp(a) levels than controls (weighted mean difference: 13.4 mg/dL, 95% CI 8.2–18.6). Conclusion Increased Lp(a) levels associate with RVO and should be included among diagnostic and prognostic indexes for this unusual-site vein thrombosis. Therapeutic interventions aimed to lower Lp(a) should be tested in RVO patients.

Background: Cataract surgery is the most common operation performed worldwide. A fixed topical corticosteroid-antibiotic combination is usually prescribed in clinical practice for 2 or more weeks to treat post surgical inflammation and prevent infection. However, this protracted schedule may increase the incidence of corticosteroid-related adverse events and notably promote antibiotic resistance. Methods: This International, multicentre, randomized, blinded-assessor, parallel-group clinical study evaluated the non-inferiority of 1-week levofloxacin/dexamethasone eye drops, followed by 1-week dexamethasone alone, vs. 2-week gold-standard tobramycin/dexamethasone (one drop QID for all schedules) to prevent and treat ocular inflammation and prevent infection after uncomplicated cataract surgery. Non-inferiority was defined as the lower limit of the 95% confidence interval (CI) around a treatment difference >–10%. The study randomized 808 patients enrolled in 53 centres (Italy, Germany, Spain and Russia). The primary endpoint was the proportion of patients without anterior chamber inflammation on day 15 defined as the end of treatment. Endophthalmitis was the key secondary endpoint. This study is registered with EudraCT code: 2018-000286-36. Results: After the end of treatment, 95.2% of the patients in the test arm vs. 94.9% of the control arm had no signs of inflammation in the anterior chamber (difference between proportions of patients = 0.028; 95% CI: −0.0275/0.0331). No case of endophthalmitis was reported. No statistically significant difference was evident in any of the other secondary endpoints. Both treatments were well tolerated. Conclusions: Non-inferiority of the new short pharmacological strategy was proven. One week of levofloxacin/dexamethasone prevents infection, ensures complete control of inflammation in almost all patients and may contain antibiotic resistance.

To evaluate natural history of drusen ooze and its role as a predictor for progression of dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD) longitudinally. Multi-centric retrospective observational case series of 72 eyes (72 patients) with dry AMD with a minimum follow-up of 4 years. Drusen types were identified on volume scans on optical coherence tomography (OCT) and were characterized for occurrence of drusen ooze at baseline until last visit. Drusen ooze was defined as hyperreflective dots overlying a collapsing drusen or pseudodrusen, or hyperreflective RPE above drusen or isoreflective dots at the level of outer nuclear layer. The consequent incidence of incomplete retinal pigment epithelium and outer retinal atrophy (iRORA), complete retinal pigment epithelium and outer retinal atrophy (cRORA), and neovascular AMD (nAMD) were evaluated statistically. In total, 72 eyes with a mean follow-up of 68.89 (± 25.57 months) were studied. At presentation, 11 eyes (15.3%) had a single drusen type, whereas 61 eyes (84.7%) had mixed drusen. Reticular pseudodrusen were most common (84.7%) followed by soft drusen (66.6%). Drusen ooze was seen in 47 eyes (65.2%) at presentation. The presence of drusen ooze at baseline (p < 0.01) and baseline best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) (p = 0.04) significantly correlated with development of iRORA and cRORA. In total, 14 eyes progressed from iRORA to cRORA over a mean follow up of 29.14 (± 24.33) months. Odds of progression to iRORA or cRORA were 20.3 times greater for eyes with drusen ooze at baseline (95% C.I., 4.4–94.2). In dry AMD, drusen ooze is a useful sign for predicting progression to iRORA and cRORA over time.

Choroidal rupture is a posterior segment affliction following a traumatic event that results in a break in the retinal pigment epithelium, Bruch membrane, and the underlying choriocapillaris. The visual prognosis may be extremely poor when involving the macular area or in cases with major comorbidities. On funduscopic examination the rupture appears as a whitish/yellowish curvilinear or crescent-shaped lesion with forked or tapered endings. Multimodal imaging including fluorescein angiography, indocyanine green angiography, optical coherence tomography, and optical coherence tomography angiography can provide a detailed assessment of the extent of damage and the onset of complications. Although there is no treatment for choroidal rupture per se, associated complications such as angle-recession glaucoma, retinal detachment, or exudative choroidal neovascularization might need therapeutic interventions. We describe the pathophysiology of choroidal rupture, the recent multimodal imaging findings, and the available treatment options for the management of complications.

Purpose: To report clinical outcomes of two different timings of intravitreal dexamethasone (DEX) implant administration for prevention of diabetic macular oedema (DME) worsening following cataract surgery. Methods: This multicentre, retrospective study included patients with DME who received an intravitreal DEX implant 1month before cataract surgery, ‘precataract DEX’ group, or at the time of cataract surgery, ‘concomitant treatments’ group. Inclusion criteria were a follow-up ≥3months and ophthalmological examination with optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging at baseline (cataract surgery) and throughout follow-up. Anatomical improvement was considered to be a decrease in OCT central subfield (CSF) thickness ≥20% compared to baseline. The primary outcomes were anatomical and functional results at 3months. Results: Two hundred twenty-one patients were included: 136 in the ‘precataract DEX’ group and 85 in the ‘concomitant treatments’ group. PURPOSE To determine the effect of preoperative topical Nepafenac administration on anterior chamber flare after uneventful cataract surgery in healthy subjects. METHODS Prospective randomized clinical trial. Seventy-three eyes of 73 healthy patients undergoing routine cataract surgery were randomized to receive (group A) topical nepafenac (1 mg/ml) or not to receive (group B) 1 drop 3 times per day for 3 days before surgery. All eyes received the same postoperative anti-inflammatory therapy. Clinical outcome parameters such as best corrected visual acuity, intraocular pressure, retinal central foveal thickness and aqueous flare were recorded preoperatively, 1, 15, 30 and 60 days after surgery. RESULTS Three patients were excluded for poor compliance, and three patients were excluded or developing pseudophakic macular oedema during the follow-up. Purpose To report the individual retinal layer thickness in healthy subjects using wide-field optical coherence tomography. Methods This was a prospective, cross-sectional study involving healthy subjects. A custom-designed semiautomated segmentation algorithm was used to split the retinal layers in seven bands, and individual retinal layer thicknesses were measured in horizontal (nasal, macular, and temporal segments) and vertical meridians (superior, macular, and inferior segments). The variation in retinal thickness was analyzed in different segments at an interval of 1 mm from reference points. Regression analysis was performed to identify the factors affecting retinal thickness. Results Twenty eyes of 20 healthy subjects with mean age of 28.9 ± 6.3 years were analyzed. Overall, nasal and superior segments (mean ± standard deviation: 279.6 ± 17.0 and 234.4 ± 19.2 µm) had maximum and minimum retinal thicknesses, respectively. A total of seven bands were delineated in each optical coherence tomography b scan in each segment. Retinal nerve fiber layer was thickest immediately nasal to optic disk margin in horizontal scan (72.4 ± 32.4 µm) and near the vascular arcades in vertical meridian.
