The electronic energy levels of cyclo(glycine-phenylalanine), cyclo(tryptophan-tyrosine) and cyclo(tryptophan-tryptophan) dipeptides are investigated with a joint experimental and theoretical approach. Experimentally, valence photoelectron spectra in the gas phase are measured using VUV radiation. Theoretically, we first obtain low-energy conformers through an automated conformer-rotamer ensemble sampling scheme based on tight-binding simulations. Then, different first principles computational schemes are considered to simulate the spectra: Hartree-Fock (HF), density functional theory (DFT) within the B3LYP approximation, the quasi-particle GW correction, and the quantum-chemistry CCSD method. Theory allows assignment of the main features of the spectra. A discussion on the role of electronic correlation is provided, by comparing computationally cheaper DFT scheme (and GW) results with the accurate CCSD method.

Background: Vision loss is a major health issue and people with visual impairments are at higher risk for visually related complaints, as poor postural control, accompanying fear of moving and higher risk for falls compared to people with normal vision. Consequently, it is important to develop and improve treatment and prevention programs aimed at reducing these problems. In this endeavour, high quality screening instruments are a prerequisite for successful research and clinical practice. Scope: The aim of this study is to verify the validity level of a new system for assessing the degree of visual disability that provides a numerical score, resulting from a combined assessment of both the Visual Field (VF) and Visual Acuity (VA) loss, obtained using a digital technology visor. Methods: To verify if the assessments of the visual impairment coefficient carried out through the two different systems produce homogeneous results, a comparison between results obtained on a group of sixty-five subjects who were visually impaired or had fragile vision was performed. Results: A great level of inhomogeneities in the evaluation of visual disability coefficient, obtained through the digital system, which provides for the combined evaluation of the visual field and visual acuity, and the conventional one, which involves the separate evaluation of the two parameters, was found. Conclusions: These results confirm therefore that the discrepancies found in the assessment of the disability level obtained through two different systems is not due to the different tools used, but to the different evaluation systems. The evaluation system carried out using the new digital visor, which provides for the combined evaluation of the VF and VA, constitutes a method to ensure a more homogeneous and reliable visual disability assessment compared to those carried out with traditional systems.

Due to the severity of their consequences, accidental high-pressure flammable gas releases are relevant hazards in the process safety. In the recent decades, several are the efforts spent on the study of high-pressure jets in open field (i.e., free jets). In particular, easy-to-use mathematical models have been developed. These, by hand calculations, allow to quickly assess various physical variables that are of paramount importance in safety evaluations. However, it is easily as possible that, in a realistic accidental scenario, the unwanted leak may involve either the ground or an equipment placed in its vicinity. As demonstrated by recent works, when a jet interacts with an obstacle, its behavior can significantly change. Hence, in the safety assessment of this situation, the mathematical models derived for the free jet scenario can lead to incorrect predictions. Focusing on the scenario of an accidental high-pressure unignited flammable jet, this work shows how the proximity to the ground can influence the lower flammability limit cloud extent of different substances. Varying the height above the ground of the source term, the effect of the ground was systematically studied through a Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis considering high-pressure unignited methane, propane and hydrogen jets. The main achievement is the demonstration that releases of compounds with similar or larger molecular weight than that of air are similarly affected by the ground while, releases of compounds lighter than air interact with the ground in a sensibly different way.

The administration of justice in Italy includes first, second and third instance. The first and second instances are represented by the Court of First Instance and the Court of Appeal: these are judgment of Romamerit. The court of last appeal for both the civil and the criminal jurisdiction is the Court of Cassation, the Italian Supreme Court. It is a court of legitimacy that should provide for a consistent and uniform interpretation of the law and that only on points of law, not on factual evidence. The Court of Cassation can confirm the sentence of second instance, can dismiss it without referral, can deciding and closing the trial definitively, or dismiss it referring the case to the judge of merit that must decide according to the principles set out in the legitimacy. The aim of this study is to analyze the Supreme Cassation Court's judgments on the legal proceedings about retained sponges in abdomen.

Discutir a forma com a qual os discursos voltados para essas práticas artísticas são produzidos e reproduzidos em articulação com uma relação de forças na qual a emergência de um saber não se vê dissociada das relações de poder é fundamental para o questionamento dessas narrativas que, na maioria das vezes, se dão de maneira a reduzir o potencial crítico dos trabalhos que procuram enquadrar. Diante dessa problemática, buscamos sustentar via análise de trabalhos conceitualistas tomados a partir dos anos 1960, lidando também com trabalhos mais contemporâneos pertinentes para a discussão proposta, a perspectiva de que as práticas conceitualistas latino-americanas produziriam resistência frente essa matriz, disparando processos de decolonização do ser via desobediência estética e epistêmica. Essa abordagem é desenvolvida nesse trabalho contando, principalmente, com autores como Walter Mignolo e Aníbal Quijano, ligados ao debate em torno da decolonialidade do poder. Consideramos também as contribuições de teóricos como Cristina Freire, Luis Camnitzer e Mari Carmen Ramírez na reflexão sobre os conceitualismos latino-americanos e compomos, junto a Michel Foucault, Mignolo y Quijano, uma argumentação que, partindo da análise de produções específicas, compreende essas práticas e seus desdobramentos na contemporaneidade junto a um processo de produção de resistência.
