2. WASSERSTEIN MEDIANS: ROBUSTNESS, PDE CHARACTERIZATION, AND NUMERICS.

Abstract

We investigate the notion of aWasserstein median as an alternative to the Wasserstein barycenter, which has become popular but may be sensitive to outliers. In terms of robustness to corrupted data, we indeed show that Wasserstein medians have a breakdown point of approximately 1/2. We give explicit constructions of Wasserstein medians in dimension one which enable us to obtain Lp estimates (which do not hold in higher dimensions). We also address dual and multimarginal reformulations. In convex subsets of Rd, we connect Wasserstein medians to a minimal (multi)flow problem à la Beckmann and a system of PDEs of Monge--Kantorovich-type, for which we propose a p-Laplacian approximation. Our analysis eventually leads to a new numerical method to compute Wasserstein medians, which is based on a Douglas--Rachford scheme applied to the minimal flow formulation of the problem. Abstract

In the classical Monge-Kantorovich problem, the transportation cost only depends on the amount of mass sent from sources to destinations and not on the paths followed by this mass. Thus, it does not allow for congestion effects. Using the notion of traffic intensity, we propose a variant taking into account congestion. This leads to an optimization problem posed on a set of probability measures on a suitable paths space. We establish existence of minimizers and give a characterization. As an application, we obtain existence and variational characterization of equilibria of Wardrop type in a continuous space setting.

Dana Keywords: Contract; Deductible; Upper-limit; Call-spread; efficiency Abstract: In order to explain coexistence of a deductible for low values of the loss and an upper limit for high values of the loss in insurance contracts, we consider the exchange of risk between two rank dependent expected utility maximizers. It is shown that if the insurer (insured) takes more into account the lowest outcomes - hence maximal losses - than the insured (insurer), then the optimal contract has an upper limit (includes a deductible for high values of the loss). If furthermore, the insured (insurer) neglects the highest outcomes while the insurer (insured) does not, the optimal contract includes a deductible (full insurance) for low values of the loss. Abstract

The Altiplano of southern Peru displays a large spectrum of Cenozoic potassic (K) and ultrapotassic (UK) mafic rocks that delineate two deep lithospheric mantle blocks that have undergone different depletion and enrichment events. Phlogopite lamproites indicate that the eastern Altiplano block is underlain by a metasomatized harzburgitic mantle of Paleoproterozoic to Archean age (depleted mantle age, [T.sub.DM] = 1130-2485 Ma; [[epsilon].sub.Nd] = -5.0 to -11.4; [sup.87]Sr/[sup.86][Sr.sub.i] = 0.7100-0.7159). Beneath the western Altiplano block, the presence of a younger ([T.sub.DM] = 837-1259 Ma; [[epsilon].sub.Nd] = +0.6 to -6.3; [sup.87]Sr/[sup.86][Sr.sub.i] = 0.7048-0.7069) metasomatized lherzolitic mantle is deduced from multiple occurrences of diopside-rich K-UK lavas (leucitites, leucite-bearing tephrites, olivine, and diopside trachybasalts). Abstract

This paper introduces a subgradient descent algorithm to compute a Riemannian metric that minimizes an energy involving geodesic distances. The heart of the method is the Subgradient Marching Algorithm to compute the derivative of the geodesic distance with respect to the metric. The geodesic distance being a concave function of the metric, this algorithm computes an element of the subgradient in O(N 2 log(N)) operations on a discrete grid of N points. It performs a front propagation that computes a subgradient of a discrete geodesic distance. We show applications to landscape modeling and to traffic congestion. Both applications require the maximization of geodesic distances under convex constraints, and are solved by subgradient descent computed with our Subgradient Marching. We also show application to the inversion of travel time tomography, where the recovered metric is the local minimum of a non-convex variational problem involving geodesic distances

Abstract

Aims: The objective of the study is to determine the demographics and the in-hospital outcome of diabetic and non-diabetic patients treated with percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) in Europe, to report the type of equipment and technology used for PCI procedures in diabetics and to clarify whether the treatment of diabetic patients complies with current European Society of Cardiology (ESC) guidelines. Methods and results: A total of 14,458 patients treated with PCI were enrolled from 29 member countries of the ESC between June 2005 and January 2006. Data were collected on patient characteristics and treatment, using new Cardiology Audit and Registration Data standards. In total, 3,603 patients (24.9%) were diabetic. Diabetics were older, more often female and had a higher body mass index than non-diabetics. Diabetics had higher rates of hypercholesterolaemia and hypertension, while current smokers were more frequent in the non-diabetics. Diabetics also had significantly higher rates of previous cardiovascular events. Clopidogrel was administered only in 48.1% of diabetic patients before PCI, while IIb/IIIa inhibitors were 22.9% during PCI. At discharge, there was a major adjustment of treatment with increases in the use of Beta-blocker (80.4%), angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI, 71.3%) and statins (89.8%) compared with on admission (Beta-blocker 60.9%, ACEI 55.0%, statin 63.1%). Inhospital mortality was higher in diabetics (1.8% vs 1.2%) although the in-hospital MACCE rate was not significantly different (3.6% vs 3.0%, p=0.09). Conclusions: Diabetic patients treated with PCI were older with more comorbidity. According to ESC guideline, the under-usage of clopidogrel, GP IIb/IIIa inhibitors should be improved. Abstract

In questo lavoro viene descritto lo studio cristallochimico della cordierite di un proietto vulcanico dell’apparato della Tolfa (Lazio, Italia). La roccia esaminata è stata campionata all’interno del deposito piroclastico (“tufo caotico”) affiorante in una cava a Colle dello Spizzicatore, Comune di Allumiere. Il campione è stato esaminato attraverso analisi in microsonda elettronica (EMPA), raffinamento strutturale su cristallo singolo e microspettroscopia infrarossa in trasformata di Fourier (FTIR). Combinando queste tecniche è stato possibile caratterizzare la quantità, posizione e coordinazione dei cationi e degli elementi volatili presenti nei canali strutturali del minerale. La cordierite di Allumiere è ortorombica, gruppo spaziale Cccm; i parametri di cella sono (in Å): a = 17,1580(6), b = 9,7573(3) e c = 9,3228(3). Le analisi microchimiche mostrano un rapporto Mg/Fe [XMg = Mg/(Mg+Fe)] = 0,58, e un basso contenuto in alcali (Na + K = 0,042 apfu). Gli spettri FTIR ottenuti su cristallo singolo sono fortemente polarizzati; gli assorbimenti osservabili nella regione di stiramento dell’H2O possono essere attribuiti a molecole di acqua orientate con il vettore H…H // a ed il piano della molecola // (001). Gli assorbimenti presenti nella regione di stiramento dei legami C-O possono essere attribuiti a molecole di CO2 e CO orientate entrambe // a; gli spettri mostrano anche la presenza di 13C and 18O nel campione. Utilizzando i coefficienti di assorbimento molare disponibili in letteratura, è possibile calcolare un contenuto di H2O di 0,02 wt% e di CO2 di 0,22 wt%. La composizione mineralogica della roccia, e la composizione dei volatili nei canali della cordierite sono concordi nel suggerire un evento termometamorfico a bassa P (≤ 2 Kbar) ed alta T (> 700°C) avvenuto in condizioni estremamente riducenti su una metapelite preesistente. This paper reports the crystalchemical study of cordierite from a volcanic ejectum from the Tolfa volcanic center (Latium, Italy). The studied rock was sampled within the pyroclastic deposit (“tufo caotico”) outcropping in a quarry at Colle dello Spizzicatore, Allumiere Community. The sample was studied by electron microprobe analysis (EMP), single-crystal structure refinement and Fourier-transform infrared microspectroscopy (FTIR). Combination of these techniques allowed detailed characterisation of the amount, location and coordination of cations and volatile molecules in the channels. Cordierite from Allumiere is orthorhombic, space group Cccm; refined cell-parameters are (in Å): a = 17.1580(6), b = 9.7573(3) and c = 9.3228(3). EMP analyses show an intermediate XMg [Mg/(Mg+Fe) = 0.58], and a very low alkali (Na + K = 0.042 apfu) content. Single-crystal FTIR spectra are strongly polarised; the absorptions observed in the H2O stretching region can be assigned to H2O molecules oriented with the H…H vector // a and the molecular plane // (001). The absorptions observed in the C-O stretching region can be assigned to both CO2 and CO molecules oriented // a; the spectra also show the presence of 13C and 18O in the sample. Using the molar absorption coefficients available in the literature, H2O = 0.02 wt% and CO2 = 0.22 wt% are calculated from the measured band intensities. The observed mineral assemblage and the volatile composition of cordierite are coherent with a thermometamorphic overprint on an early metapelite, which occurred at low-P (≤ 2 Kbar), high-T (> 700°C) and extremely reducing conditions.
