Malaria remains one of the most important infectious diseases globally due to its high incidence and mortality rates. The influx of infected cases from endemic to non-endemic malaria regions like Europe has resulted in a public health concern over sporadic local outbreaks. This is facilitated by the continued presence of competent Anopheles vectors in non-endemic countries.We modelled the potential distribution of the main malaria vector across Spain using the ensemble of eight modelling techniques based on environmental parameters and the Anopheles maculipennis s.l. presence/absence data collected from 2000 to 2020. We then combined this map with the number of imported malaria cases in each municipality to detect the geographic hot spots with a higher risk of local malaria transmission.The malaria vector occurred preferentially in irrigated lands characterized by warm climate conditions and moderate annual precipitation. Some areas surrounding irrigated lands in northern Spain (e.g. Zaragoza, Logroño), mainland areas (e.g. Madrid, Toledo) and in the South (e.g. Huelva), presented a significant likelihood of A. maculipennis s.l. occurrence, with a large overlap with the presence of imported cases of malaria.While the risk of malaria re-emergence in Spain is low, it is not evenly distributed throughout the country. The four recorded local cases of mosquito-borne transmission occurred in areas with a high overlap of imported cases and mosquito presence. Integrating mosquito distribution with human incidence cases provides an effective tool for the quantification of large-scale geographic variation in transmission risk and pinpointing priority areas for targeted surveillance and prevention.

Abstract Background Mosquito-borne diseases are a major concern for public and veterinary health authorities, highlighting the importance of effective vector surveillance and control programs. Traditional surveillance methods are labor-intensive and do not provide high temporal resolution, which may hinder a full assessment of the risk of mosquito-borne pathogen transmission. Emerging technologies for automated remote mosquito monitoring have the potential to address these limitations; however, few studies have tested the performance of such systems in the field. Methods In the present work, an optical sensor coupled to the entrance of a standard mosquito suction trap was used to record 14,067 mosquito flights of Aedes and Culex genera at four temperature regimes in the laboratory, and the resulting dataset was used to train a machine learning (ML) model. The trap, sensor, and ML model, which form the core of an automated mosquito surveillance system, were tested in the field for two classification purposes: to discriminate Aedes and Culex mosquitoes from other insects that enter the trap and to classify the target mosquitoes by genus and sex. The field performance of the system was assessed using balanced accuracy and regression metrics by comparing the classifications made by the system with those made by the manual inspection of the trap. Results The field system discriminated the target mosquitoes (Aedes and Culex genera) with a balanced accuracy of 95.5% and classified the genus and sex of those mosquitoes with a balanced accuracy of 88.8%. An analysis of the daily and seasonal temporal dynamics of Aedes and Culex mosquito populations was also performed using the time-stamped classifications from the system. Conclusions This study reports results for automated mosquito genus and sex classification using an optical sensor coupled to a mosquito trap in the field with highly balanced accuracy. The compatibility of the sensor with commercial mosquito traps enables the sensor to be integrated into conventional mosquito surveillance methods to provide accurate automatic monitoring with high temporal resolution of Aedes and Culex mosquitoes, two of the most concerning genera in terms of arbovirus transmission. Abstract Oviposition is essential in the life history of insects and is mainly mediated by chemical and tactile cues present on the plant surface. Oviposition deterrents or stimulants can modify insect oviposition and be employed in pest control. Relatively few gustatory oviposition stimuli have been described for tortricid moths. In this study the effect of NaCl, KCl, sucrose, fructose and neem oil on the number of eggs laid by Cydia pomonella (L.), Grapholita molesta (Busck) and Lobesia botrana (Dennis & Schifermüller) was tested in laboratory arenas containing filter papers loaded with 3 doses of a given stimulus and solvent control. In general, salts increased oviposition at the mid dose (102 M) and sugars reduced it at the highest dose (103 mM), but these effects depended on the species. Neem oil dramatically reduced the number of eggs laid as the dose increased, but the lowest neem oil dose (0.1% v/v) increased L. botrana oviposition relative to solvent control. Our study shows that ubiquitous plant chemicals modify tortricid moth oviposition under laboratory conditions, and that neem oil is a strong oviposition deterrent. The oviposition arena developed in this study is a convenient tool to test the effect of tastants on the oviposition behavior of tortricid moths.

Background The general factor of personality is defined as a blend of socially desirable attributes of basic personality traits. It is related to a variety of socially desirable qualities, including emotional well-being. However, its relationship with psychological and social well-being has been underexplored. Participants and procedure Across three studies (N = 556, N = 448, N = 3,294) from three different countries (Poland, Spain, and USA), we show that the general factor of personality is highly related to a general factor of well-being and to its specific dimensions. Results Results from Study 1 confirmed this association using a basic measure of well-being (i.e., the Mental Health Continuum), results from Study 2 confirmed this association using six specific measures of well-being, while results from Study 3 reproduced a congruent result using a large-scale community sample. Conclusions Our findings align with the existing literature stressing the positive link between the general factor of personality and aspects of well-being.

Phenology models are widely used in Decision Support Systems to predict the phenology of pests. Grapholita molesta (Busck) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), a polyphagous pest, has a high prevalence in apple trees (Malus domestica Borkh.) (Rosales: Rosaceae) in certain areas, despite the fact that apple trees are considered secondary hosts. Its natural behavior of feeding inside plant tissue at the larval stage makes monitoring and planning methods of control critical for Integrated Pest Management. The development times and survival rates of two field populations of G. molesta larvae on apple cultivars ‘Gala’, ‘Golden’, and ‘Fuji’ were determined under different temperature (constant versus field fluctuation) and feeding conditions (diet versus apples attached to the tree and detached from the tree). The results showed that G. molesta fitness in apples is affected by fluctuating temperature regimes in the field, the condition of the fruit, whether or not the fruit is attached to the tree, and the cultivar. The temperature was the main cause of the differences in the studied parameters. Larvae developme–nt time was delayed due to fluctuating field temperatures. Larvae had a shorter development time in fruits detached from the tree compared to attached fruits, and apple cultivars influenced development time in both laboratory and field conditions, with the ‘Golden’ cultivar having better fitness and a higher rate of larvae survival in the fruits attached to the tree. These factors need to be considered to properly adjust the phenology models and improve the Integrated Pest Management system of apples.

Abstract. Microbiological diagnosis of chronic osteoarticular infections remains a major challenge, particularly when the clinical presentation is atypical and the pathogen is uncommon. In this unique case, Capnocytophaga canimorsus, a microorganism belonging to the oral microbiota of some domestic animals, caused septic arthritis and multifocal osteomyelitis in the long bone of a 43-year-old immunocompetent man. The patient was treated with two-stage surgery and local and systemic antibiotic therapy, and had a successful recovery. C. canimorsus should be considered as a possible etiological agent in patients with osteoarticular pathology and a history of exposure to domestic animals.

Abstract In adult Lepidoptera the labial palps are best known for their role in CO2 detection, but they can also bear sensilla chaetica which function is unknown. The number and distribution of sensilla chaetica in labial palps was studied using a bright field microscope. To determine if these sensilla have a gustatory function, we performed single sensillum electrophysiology recordings from palp and antennal sensilla of adult moths of Cydia pomonella (L.), Grapholita molesta (Busck) and Lobesia botrana (Denis and Shieffermüller). Each sensillum was stimulated with 3 doses of one of four test stimulus (sucrose, fructose, KCl and NaCl). Overall, responses (spikes/s−1) increased with dose, and were higher in the palps than in the antennae, and higher to sugars than to salts. With sugars the response increased with concentration in the palp but not in the antenna. With salts there was a drop in response at the intermediate concentration. The number and position of sensilla chaetica on labial palps was variable among individuals. Sensilla were located in the most exposed areas of the palp. Differences in sensilla distribution were detected between species. Such differences among species and between palps and antenna suggest that taste sensilla on the palps have an unforeseen role in adaptation.

Abstract The natural history of compensated cirrhosis due to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has not been completely characterized. The aim of the present study was to assess the incidence and risk factors of acute decompensation of cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and extrahepatic cancers. This was a multicenter, retrospective, cohort study including 449 patients with compensated cirrhosis due to NAFLD. We calculated cumulative incidences and used competitive risk analysis to determine the risk factors associated with decompensation and cancer development. Over a median of 39 months of follow‐up, 124 patients (28%) presented acute decompensation. The most frequent decompensation was ascites (21%) followed by hepatic encephalopathy (15%), variceal bleeding (9%), and spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (3%). Acute‐on‐chronic liver failure was diagnosed in 6% of patients during follow‐up. Liver function parameters and specifically an albumin level below 40 g/L were independently associated with an increased risk of decompensation. The presence of ischemic heart disease was independently associated with acute decompensation. Seventy‐eight patients (18%) developed hepatocellular carcinoma or extrahepatic cancers during follow‐up (51 and 27, respectively). Conclusion: Patients with compensated cirrhosis due to NAFLD are at high risk of severe liver complications, such as the development of acute decompensation, in a relative short follow‐up time. This population is at high risk of hepatic and extrahepatic cancers.

Introducción: disponer de instrumentos reproducibles que midan la actividad física y los comportamientos sedentarios es una prioridad para la vigilancia y promoción de estilos de vida saludables en niños y niñas. En esta investigación se evaluó la reproducibilidad prueba-reprueba del cuestionario poiba-¿Cómo nos movemos? en escolares colombianos. Materiales y métodos: participaron 125 estudiantes de tercer grado de primaria de una institución educativa colombiana. En dos ocasiones se aplicó el cuestionario poiba-¿Cómo nos movemos?, que evalúa la actividad física realizada para transportarse a la institución educativa y desde esta, durante el tiempo escolar (clases de educación física y recreo), extraescolar (deportiva, con entrenador) y libre. Se emplearon índices kappa y kappa ponderado en los ítems categóricos y el coeficiente de correlación intraclase con modelo de efectos mixtos en los ítems con escala cuantitativa. Resultados: en los ítems sobre actividad física en el ámbito escolar y deportivo predominaron kappas superiores a 0.70. Las preguntas sobre el transporte a la institución educativa y desde esta tuvieron coeficientes kappa cercanos a 0.90. Los ítems de tiempo frente a pantallas alcanzaron coeficientes kappa alrededor de 0.5, y los correspondientes a la hora de acostarse y levantarse obtuvieron coeficientes de correlación intraclase entre 0.40 y 0.72. Conclusiones: el cuestionario poiba-¿Cómo nos movemos? es una opción para evaluar la actividad física de escolares en el contexto latinoamericano. Los ítems sobre actividad física de transporte, en el ámbito escolar y deportivo, tuvieron los mayores índices de reproducibilidad.

Background & Aims: Bleeding from gastric fundal varices (isolated gastric varices type 1/gastroesophageal varices type 2) represents a major problem because of a high incidence of rebleeding and death with standard-of-care therapy (endoscopic obliteration with tissue adhesives plus pharmacological therapy). Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunts (TIPSs) are recommended as a rescue therapy. Pre-emptive ‘early’ TIPS (pTIPS) significantly improves control of bleeding and survival in patients at high-risk of dying or rebleeding from esophageal varices. Methods: This randomised controlled trial investigate whether the use of pTIPS improves rebleeding-free survival in patients with gastric fundal varices (isolated gastric varices type 1 and/or gastroesophageal varices type 2) compared with standard therapy. Results: The study did not achieve the predefined sample size because of low recruitment. Nevertheless, pTIPS (n = 11) was more effective compared with combined endoscopic and pharmacological therapy (n = 10) in improving rebleeding-free survival (per protocol analysis: 100 vs. 28%; p = 0.017). This was mainly because of a better outcome in patients with Child-Pugh B or C scores. There were no differences in serious adverse events or in the incidence of hepatic encephalopathy among the different cohorts. Conclusion: The use of pTIPS should be considered in patients with Child-Pugh B or C scores bleeding from gastric fundal varices. Impact and implications: The first-line treatment of gastric fundal varices (GOV2 and/or IGV1) is the combination of pharmacological therapy and endoscopic obliteration with glue. TIPS is considered the main rescue therapy. Recent data suggest that, in patients at high-risk of dying or rebleeding (Child-Pugh C or B scores + active bleeding at endoscopy) from esophageal varices, the use of pTIPS, performed during the first 72 h from admission, results in an increased rate of control of bleeding and survival compared with combined endoscopic and pharmacological therapy. Herein, we present a randomised controlled trial comparing pTIPS with combined endoscopic (injection of glue) and pharmacological therapy (first, somatostatin or terlipressin; carvedilol after discharge) in the treatment of patients bleeding from GOV2 and/or IGV1. Although we were not able to include the calculated sample size because of the scarcity of these patients, our results show that the use of pTIPS is associated with a significantly higher actuarial rebleeding-free survival when analysed as per protocol. This is because of the greater efficacy of this treatment in patients with Child-Pugh B or C scores.

Abstract Background Every year, more than 700,000 people die from vector-borne diseases, mainly transmitted by mosquitoes. Vector surveillance plays a major role in the control of these diseases and requires accurate and rapid taxonomical identification. New approaches to mosquito surveillance include the use of acoustic and optical sensors in combination with machine learning techniques to provide an automatic classification of mosquitoes based on their flight characteristics, including wingbeat frequency. The development and application of these methods could enable the remote monitoring of mosquito populations in the field, which could lead to significant improvements in vector surveillance. Methods A novel optical sensor prototype coupled to a commercial mosquito trap was tested in laboratory conditions for the automatic classification of mosquitoes by genus and sex. Recordings of > 4300 laboratory-reared mosquitoes of Aedes and Culex genera were made using the sensor. The chosen genera include mosquito species that have a major impact on public health in many parts of the world. Five features were extracted from each recording to form balanced datasets and used for the training and evaluation of five different machine learning algorithms to achieve the best model for mosquito classification. Results The best accuracy results achieved using machine learning were: 94.2% for genus classification, 99.4% for sex classification of Aedes, and 100% for sex classification of Culex. The best algorithms and features were deep neural network with spectrogram for genus classification and gradient boosting with Mel Frequency Cepstrum Coefficients among others for sex classification of either genus. Conclusions To our knowledge, this is the first time that a sensor coupled to a standard mosquito suction trap has provided automatic classification of mosquito genus and sex with high accuracy using a large number of unique samples with class balance. This system represents an improvement of the state of the art in mosquito surveillance and encourages future use of the sensor for remote, real-time characterization of mosquito populations. The European Fish Index EFI+ is the only fish-based multimetric index for the assessment of the ecological status of running waters that is validated and thus applicable across most countries of the European Union. Metrics of the index rely on several attributes of the species present in the fish assemblage, irrespective of their native/alien status. The abundance of alien fish, together with other anthropogenic impacts, is one of the most important threats to the conservation of native fish and ecosystem health and is also an indicator of degraded stream conditions. Therefore, to improve the performance of the EFI+ in regions with high incidence of alien species, the EFI+ was adapted to include alien fish pressure as a new metric that reflects the number of alien species as well as the proportional abundance of alien individuals. The application of the adapted index (A-EFI+) is illustrated with data from several Iberian Mediterranean basins and showed similar or stronger correlations than the original EFI+ with anthropogenic pressure (land-use variables and alterations in hydrology and river morphology) and with other regional fish indices. EFI+ has been invaluable to intercalibrate fish indices across Europe, and A-EFI+ is similar but explicitly includes alien pressure, thus helping to provide a more comprehensive assessment of ecosystem health and to communicate it to society.

The recent COVID-19 pandemic situation highlights the importance of digital vaccine certificates. In response, the European Union (EU) developed EU Digital Vaccine Certificates to enable proof of non-infectivity and completed vaccinations. However, these solutions suffer from several shortcomings, such as ineffective certificate holder identification and a high violation of user privacy with the disclosure of sensitive information. In this work, we present a novel solution for privacy-preserving EU Digital Vaccine Certificates. Our solution solves the aforementioned privacy and security shortcomings and is in line with current EU legislation, i.e., the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the upcoming revision of the electronic IDentification, Authentication, and trust Services (eIDAS), called regulation eIDAS 2.0, and the new tools that it envisages to be led by European digital identity. This identity is intended to allow citizens to prove their identity to access online services, share digital documents, or simply prove specific personal characteristics such as age without revealing their identity or other personal information. The core of our proposal is built on our novel attribute-based credential scheme, which can be easily implemented on various handheld devices, especially on Android smartphones and smartwatches. However, due to the lightweight nature of our scheme, it can also be implemented on constrained devices such as smart cards. In order to demonstrate the security, privacy, and practicality inherent in our proposal, we provide the security analysis of the cryptographic core along with a set of experimental results conducted on smartphones and smart cards.

Objective: Implementation fidelity is a key dimension in process evaluation but has been scarcely studied. Reptes is a selective alcohol and cannabis use prevention program performed in vulnerable young people (16-21 years) from different educational and leisure settings. The study aimed to describe the components of this program, its implementation fidelity, and satisfaction among participants and facilitators. Method: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted. Implementation fidelity was assessed in terms of adherence, dose, participant responsiveness, and quality of the intervention through self-reports completed by 15 facilitators and self-administered questionnaires by 99 youth from the 15 groups completing the program. Results: 70.7% of the groups performed 30 of the 43 planned activities with high use of various teaching methods, except for Information and Communication Technology resources. Fidelity implementation was above 70%. 2/3 groups completed an acceptable intervention and 1/3 completed a qualified intervention. Satisfaction was higher than 7. Conclusions: Our results show high implementation fidelity and satisfaction compared with those from similar studies. Resumen: Objetivo: La fidelidad en la implementación es una dimensión clave en el proceso de evaluación, pero ha sido escasamente estudiada. Reptes es un programa de prevención selectiva del consumo de alcohol y cánnabis dirigido a jóvenes vulnerables (16-21años) de diferentes espacios educativos y de ocio y tiempo libre. El estudio pretende describir los componentes de este programa, su fidelidad de implementación y la satisfacción de los/las participantes y los/las facilitadores/as. Método: Se realizó un estudio descriptivo transversal. La fidelidad de implementación fue valorada en clave de adherencia, dosis, capacidad de respuesta de los/las participantes y calidad de la intervención a través de los informes autocumplimentados por los/las 15 facilitadores/as del programa y los cuestionarios autocompletados por los/las 99 jóvenes de los 15 grupos que completaron el programa. Resultados: El 70,7% de los grupos realizaron 30 de las 43 actividades planificadas, con un uso elevado de las estrategias de aprendizaje, excepto para los recursos basados en las tecnologías de la información y la comunicación. La fidelidad de implementación se situó por encima del 70%. Dos tercios de los grupos completaron una intervención aceptable y un tercio completó una intervención cualificada. La satisfacción se situó por encima de 7. Conclusiones: Nuestros resultados muestran una alta fidelidad en la implementación y la satisfacción en comparación con estudios similares.

Resumen: Objetivo: Analizar los patrones de consumo de alcohol y cannabis, y sus factores asociados, en jóvenes de 16-21 años en contexto de vulnerabilidad. Método: Estudio transversal a partir del cuestionario pretest de un estudio de evaluación, administrado a una muestra de conveniencia de 365 jóvenes provenientes de Programas de Formación e Inserción (PFI) o que asistieran a actividades de entidades comunitarias de barrios desfavorecidos de Barcelona. Las variables dependientes fueron el consumo de alcohol y cannabis experimental, regular y problemático. Las variables independientes fueron la impulsividad, la búsqueda de sensaciones, las expectativas y las creencias en relación con el consumo de drogas, las habilidades sociales y variables contextuales. Las asociaciones se establecieron mediante modelos de regresión logística multivariados. Resultados: La prevalencia de consumo intensivo de alcohol (24,2% para binge drinking y 33,3% para borracheras) y de consumo de cannabis experimental (51,1%) y problemático (12,9%) fue mayor en estudiantes de PFI que en jóvenes de entidades. Asimismo, presentaban mayores puntuaciones en las escalas de impulsividad, búsqueda de sensaciones, expectativas y creencias favorables al consumo de alcohol. En general, la prevalencia de consumo de alcohol experimental fue superior en las chicas que en los chicos. El binge drinking regular se asoció con la búsqueda de sensaciones intensas (odds ratio ajustada [ORa]: 1,06; intervalo de confianza del 95% [IC95%]: 1,01-1,12), mientras que asistir a PFI se asoció con un consumo problemático de cannabis (ORa: 2,73; IC95%: 1,26-5,89). Las expectativas favorables al consumo de alcohol y cannabis se asociaron con un consumo problemático respectivo. Conclusión: El riesgo individual, vinculado a las trayectorias de mayor riesgo de los estudiantes de PFI, se asocia con un mayor consumo problemático de alcohol y de cannabis que en los/las jóvenes de entidades comunitarias expuestos/as a un riesgo ambiental de alta frecuencia de consumo. Abstract: Objective: To analyze the patterns of alcohol and cannabis consumption, and their associated factors, in young people aged 16 and 21 in a context of vulnerability. Method: Cross-sectional study based on a pre-test questionnaire from an evaluation study, administered to a convenience sample of 365 young people from Social Guarantee Programs (SGP), or who attended activities of community entities from disadvantaged neighborhoods in Barcelona. Dependent variables were experimental, regular, and problematic alcohol and cannabis consumption, while independent variables were impulsivity, sensation seeking, expectations, and beliefs regarding drug use, social skills, and contextual variables. Associations were established using multivariate logistic regression models. Results: The prevalence of intensive alcohol consumption (24.2% for binge drinking and 33.3% for binge drinking) and experimental (51.1%) and problematic cannabis use (12.9%) was higher in SGP students than entity youth. Likewise, they presented higher scores on the impulsivity scales, sensation seeking, expectations and beliefs favorable to alcohol consumption. In general, the prevalence of experimental alcohol consumption was higher in girls than in boys. Regular binge drinking was associated with intense sensations seeking (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 1.06; 95% confidence interval [95%CI]: 1.01-1.12), while attending SGP was associated with problematic cannabis use (aOR: 2.73; 95%CI: 1.26-5.89). Positive expectations to alcohol and cannabis use were associated with problematic substance use. Conclusion: Individual risk, linked to the higher risk trajectories of SGP students, is associated with a higher problematic consumption of alcohol and cannabis than in young people from community entities exposed to an environmental risk of high frequency of consumption.

In this article, we examine the relationship established between what the history of education in Spain has identified as "pedagogical renewal" and the proposals, experiences, reflections, meetings and training spaces framed in what at the time was identified as "intercultural education". This analysis stems from the apparent disappearance of everything generated around "intercultural education" throughout the 1990s from the historical account of pedagogical renewal. Faced with this apparent mismatch, the authors of the article argue that the main characteristics of the intercultural proposal (in terms of organisational forms, the global nature of its proposals and critical spirit questioning some of the basic pillars of the dominant educational system and model) would allow it to be identified with the movements, proposals and practices of pedagogical renewal. Additionally, the authors highlight the commitment and involvement of individuals, groups and journals aligned with the pedagogical renewal in the promotion and defence of intercultural education. Consequently, the authors finally propose some key insights that may help us understand why this presence and participation tends to be overlooked in the historiographical account of the renewal.

Computer engineering students should develop competences related to the contents of databases design and SQL queries. For this purpose, the recommendations on the convenience of changing the traditional teaching methodology to the flipped classroom are followed. In this article we present a quantitative study in which we compare the potential for the development of engineering students' competences in the design and use of databases of the flipped classroom methodology and the traditional teaching methodology. The results obtained in the evaluation of the subject in two different courses are compared. In the first course, traditional teaching methodology was used. In the second one, flipped classroom was used when its implementation had already been tried and tested. In this article we show evidence that the implementation of the flipped classroom teaching methodology provides different results depending on the learning promoted and on the specific contents in the subject of relational databases. We have found evidence that flipped classroom improve theoretical learning outcomes for database design and in the resolution of non-reproductive activities in the SQL queries block. No conclusive benefits are reported for students' competency development for either of the two content blocks.

Immunization is a highly cost-effective investment in health, proven to be an effective tool in controlling and eliminating dangerous infectious diseases. Health science students require evidence-based knowledge to tackle challenges in healthcare, particularly in the field of vaccination. The aim of the current study is to asses students' knowledge on vaccinations and further explore their feedback after attending Educating Vaccination Competence web-based course (EDUVAC web-based course). Students from five Higher Educational Institutes voluntarily participated in the EDUVAC web-based course. The course provided various study materials, including PowerPoint presentations, videos, quizzes, texts, and references to reputable websites. It also offered small assignments and self-tests for self-evaluation. An online questionnaire was available to students before and after they completed the EDUVAC web-based course. The mean knowledge score on vaccines increased significantly after the EDUVAC web-based course (p<0.001). The majority of the students (95%) felt that the web-based course has benefitted them for their future career and 96.4% would encourage other students to attend the EDUVAC web-based course. Overall, our findings suggest that EDUVAC is a valuable resource for those seeking to enhance their understanding of vaccination.

Abstract The skull vault, formed by the flat bones of the skull, has a limited spectrum of disease that lies between the fields of neuro- and musculoskeletal radiology. Its unique abnormalities, as well as other ubiquitous ones, present particular features in this location. Moreover, some benign entities in this region may mimic malignancy if analyzed using classical bone-tumor criteria, and proper patient management requires being familiar with these presentations. This article is structured as a practical review offering a systematic diagnostic approach to focal calvarial lesions, broadly organized into four categories: (1) pseudolesions: arachnoid granulations, meningo-/encephaloceles, vascular canals, frontal hyperostosis, parietal thinning, parietal foramina, and sinus pericrani; (2) lytic: fibrous dysplasia, epidermal inclusion and dermoid cysts, eosinophilic granuloma, hemangioma, aneurysmal bone cyst, giant cell tumor, metastasis, and myeloma; (3) sclerotic: osteomas, osteosarcoma, and metastasis; (4) transdiploic: meningioma, hemangiopericytoma, lymphoma, and metastasis, along with other less common entities. Tips on the potential usefulness of functional imaging techniques such as MR dynamic susceptibility (T2*) perfusion, MR spectroscopy, diffusion-weighted imaging, and PET imaging are provided.

Current therapies for treating Glioblastoma (GB), and brain tumours in general, are inefficient and represent numerous challenges. In addition to surgical resection, chemotherapy and radiotherapy are presently used as standards of care. However, treated patients still face a dismal prognosis with a median survival below 15–18 months. Temozolomide (TMZ) is the main chemotherapeutic agent administered; however, intrinsic or acquired resistance to TMZ contributes to the limited efficacy of this drug. To circumvent the current drawbacks in GB treatment, a large number of classical and non-classical platinum complexes have been prepared and tested for anticancer activity, especially platinum (IV)-based prodrugs. Platinum complexes, used as alkylating agents in the anticancer chemotherapy of some malignancies, are though often associated with severe systemic toxicity (i.e., neurotoxicity), especially after long-term treatments. The objective of the current developments is to produce novel nanoformulations with improved lipophilicity and passive diffusion, promoting intracellular accumulation, while reducing toxicity and optimizing the concomitant treatment of chemo-/radiotherapy. Moreover, the blood–brain barrier (BBB) prevents the access of the drugs to the brain and accumulation in tumour cells, so it represents a key challenge for GB management. The development of novel nanomedicines with the ability to (i) encapsulate Pt-based drugs and pro-drugs, (ii) cross the BBB, and (iii) specifically target cancer cells represents a promising approach to increase the therapeutic effect of the anticancer drugs and reduce undesired side effects. In this review, a critical discussion is presented concerning different families of nanoparticles able to encapsulate platinum anticancer drugs and their application for GB treatment, emphasizing their potential for increasing the effectiveness of platinum-based drugs.

We provide a unique fish individual body size dataset collected from our own sampling and public sources in north-eastern Spain. The dataset includes individual body size measures (fork length and mass) of 12,288 individuals of 24 fish species within 10 families collected at 118 locations in large rivers and small streams. Fish were caught by one-pass electrofishing following European standard protocols. The fish dataset has information on the local instream conditions including climatic variables (i.e., temperature and precipitation), topography (i.e., altitude), nutrient concentration (i.e., total phosphorus and nitrates), and the IMPRESS values (a measure of cumulative human impacts in lotic ecosystems). The potential uses of this new fish dataset are manifold, including developing size-based indices to further estimate the ecological status of freshwater ecosystems, allometric models, and analysis of variation in body size structure along environmental gradients.
