As the urgency to mitigate climate change intensifies, the achievement of zero carbon targets in the built environment has become a critical objective. Building retrofitting plays a vital role in reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions in existing buildings. This paper presents an approach that combines Building Information Modeling (BIM) with multiple domains to strive for zero carbon targets in building retrofit projects. The proposed approach is based on a dynamic multi-parameter analysis that integrates indoor comfort, energy savings, CO2eq reduction, and the social cost of carbon while considering investment costs. Renewable energy technologies, such as photovoltaic panels and solar thermal systems, are emphasized to achieve the desired zero-carbon outcomes. Real-time monitoring mechanisms enable continuous performance evaluation and adaptive retrofit strategies for further energy savings. This approach is validated through a case study of an existing thermal bath building, known as “Terme Lucane”, located in southern Italy. The results of the study demonstrate significant reductions in energy consumption and carbon emissions, highlighting the potential of the proposed approach to achieve zero carbon targets through the integration of multi-data BIM implementation. These findings offer a promising pathway for building retrofit projects aiming for zero carbon targets through multi-data BIM modeling.

The pandemic COVID-19 era we are experiencing has changed our way of seeing, thinking and designing indoor and outdoor environments and, above all, plant systems and building-plant management. Energy environmental sustainability is a common fundamental target for buildings and plant systems, but health protection and prevention are the priority issues for the basis of any retrofitting and refurbishment operation. This question becomes even more complex if the building is historic and used for hospital or for healthcare facilities. In this research we propose a methodological approach based on the combination of physical-real and “virtual”, i.e. measured and simulated information. The proposed method can be a useful tool for setting up continuous monitoring systems for microclimatic and ventilation conditions, user influx/presence and behaviour, real operation (on demand) of the plants and control/regulation system adjustment. Results show the importance of drawing up useful guidelines for training health workers and people/patient subjects, aiming at conscious interaction for health and wellbeing protection, but also better indoor environment management. This is particularly important for healthcare environments such as the one studied.

Microclimatic conditions play a key role in the conservation of art collections and architecture, results obtained by monitoring campaign are essential to define preventive conservation strategies. An experimental methodological approach was identified to analyze the microclimatic conditions, to evaluate environmental damage and decay phenomena and support the conservation of artworks. Results obtained from experimental measurements performed inside a historical Dominican convent, which is now the San Marco museum in Florence (Italy), were compared and discussed. The detailed investigation of thermo-physical and thermo-hygrometric behavior of building in response to internal and external stress, allows to define preventive conservation strategies and plant solutions in a perspective of its acclimatization and adaptive reuse of internal ambient.

Biological particles in heritage-related indoor environments (museums, libraries, archives) represent a hazard to artifacts (biodeteriogenic action), operators and visitors’ health. The aim of the study was to evaluate environmental biological contamination and microclimate conditions in different periods of the year in De Rossi room of the historical Palatina Library in Parma. Microclimatic measurements were recorded continuously for a period ranging from 11 to 17 days in: January–February, May and September 2017. Monitoring of bacterial and fungal contamination was performed for air by active and passive sampling and by nitrocellulose membranes on shelves and manuscripts. Microorganisms were isolated by in vitro culture (Tryptic Soy Agar and Sabouraud Dextrose Agar) and characterized by molecular investigation. Viable and non-viable fungal spores were collected by Hirst spore trap. Concerning air, the highest bacterial mean values were 76.67 cfu/m3 (in May) and 3.33 IMA (in February, May and September), while for fungi 60.67 cfu/m3 and 4.33 IMA in September. The highest fungal values, both on shelves and books, were recorded in September with Alternaria, Arthrinium, Aspergillus, Cladosporium and Penicillium spp. being the mainly isolated fungi. Air temperature, relative humidity and air velocity reached mean values ranging, respectively, from 14.71 to 26.60 °C, from 41.62 to 44.83% and from 0 to 0.04 m/s. This case study provides an assessment of the environmental quality over a long period, representing a reference model to better understanding microbiological contamination of cultural heritage environment toward the improvement of artwork conservation strategies and the safeguard of human health.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the engineering/technical approach to building and plant design. In Italy, most of the school heritage belongs to historical buildings, which are not only under constraints for the protection and prevention of loss of cultural heritage but are often created with a different intended use. This fact implies that any plant engineering project is really complex. Starting from the current sanitary measures for reopening during the Covid-19 era and the crucial current research on this matter, the feasibility of plant retrofit/refurbishment solutions by means of effective ventilation and air quality are investigated. Various plant solutions based on demand-controlled mechanical ventilation, operating 24 h a day, seven days a week, without air recirculation mode, for a historical high school building were studied using transient simulations. A result comparison showed that it is possible to obtain healthy school environments by means of an optimal compromise between energy savings and the best ventilation conditions for indoor air quality (IAQ). Sustainability is understood as effective and efficient solutions for energy consumption reduction and environmental sustainability as a guarantee for people&rsquo, s safety and wellbeing.

The growing use of plastic film coverings in agriculture is due to the possibility of increasing the air temperature around the plants, reducing radiative and convective energy losses, protecting fruit trees from adverse weather conditions, reducing fungal diseases, assuring less reliance on herbicides and pesticides, better protection of food products and more efficient water conservation. Low-density polyethylene (LD-PE) is one of the most widely used plastic films for greenhouse coverings, low and medium tunnels and soil mulching. In this paper, we present radiometric properties of a new and old (used for more than five years) LD-PE film, experimentally investigated using different methodological approaches for different wavelength bands, especially at medium IR. Experimental measurements in the IR wavelength spectrum, included the Near (0.78–3 μm), i.e. N-IR-A (0.78–1.4 μm) and N-IR-B (1.4–3 μm) and Medium (3–50 μm) in accordance with ISO 20473 (E) 2007 were carried out. Experimental results obtained are in agreement with those in the literature and show that the aging effects are minimal in the plastic film used for five years. This finding is crucial for greenhouse design. Referring to practical applications, energy balance of an ordinary agricultural greenhouse was also evaluated. The authors believe that this research results on all the optical properties in a wide spectral range of LD-PE will be useful not only in agriculture, but also for any other solar engineering application.

This research provides an integrated methodological approach based on the combined use of spatial syntax modelling and eyetracker analysis techniques for lighting sustainability aimed to adaptive reuse of all the spaces with high historical, architectural, philological value of Cultural Heritage (CH). MosLESS (Modelling Sustainable Lighting with Eyetracker and Spatial Syntax techniques) is the proposed method, that can suggest fundamental guidelines for dynamic and static lighting in the museographic and museological areas, but also for reuse, conservation and enhancement of historical and CH buildings integrated with efficient energy management and conservation and protection needs. The National Museum of San Matteo in Pisa (Italy) was the pilot project. Particular environments were chosen for the experimental measurement campaigns carried out to assess dynamic and static visual fields, vision and perception. Methodological approach and results can be useful tools for exhibition planning with important energy, social and cultural effects. A further objective of the research will be to facilitate cultural exchanges, communication and new procedures for the digital management of the transmission or modification of museographic and exhibition projects, up to relations with public clients, as well as integrated management of information and decision-making processes.

Surgical staff behavior in operating theatres is one of the factors associated with indoor air quality and surgical site infection risk. The aim of this study was to apply an approach including microbiological, particle, and microclimate parameters during two simulated surgical hip arthroplasties to evaluate the influence of staff behavior on indoor air quality. During the first hip arthroplasty, the surgical team behaved correctly, but in the second operation, behavioral recommendations were not respected. Microbiological contamination was evaluated by active and passive methods. The air velocity, humidity, temperature, and CO2 concentration were also monitored. The highest levels of microbial and particle contamination, as well as the highest variation in the microclimate parameter, were recorded during the surgical operation where the surgical team behaved &ldquo, incorrectly&rdquo, Turbulent air flow ventilation systems appeared more efficient than in the past and very low air microbial contamination was reached when behavior was correct. Therefore, adherence to behavioral recommendations in operating theatres is essential to not undermine the effectiveness of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems and employed resources.

Our present research, starting from a previous study, aimed to define a methodological approach for sustainable lighting designs in a historical library, focusing on lighting quality, mainly obtained from the optimal use of natural light and its combination with the artificial one. A historical Florentine monastery, which is now a university library, was used as a pilot project. The proposed method forms an essential part of widening and deepening the recent study. Results have shown that this method will allow for adaptive lighting, based on the optimal control and use of natural light, historical&ndash, philological re-reading of the space, cultural heritage preventive protection and conservation, with the aim of building adaptive reuse, and it can be extended to similar cultural heritage cases, but also non-listed buildings and current designs. This research demonstrates how a correct natural lighting design can be a tool for sustainable refurbishment, guaranteeing cultural heritage conservation and preventive protection, and recovery of the historical, architectural and philological value of old and/or listed buildings, which have been converted to uses, often diametrically opposed to the original ones.

Many ancient libraries in Italy are housed in historical buildings, only a few in former churches and monasteries. Newly built libraries mostly comply with the requirements of sustainability, energy saving and renewable energy use, but this does not occur for existing ones, especially when they belong to the historical cultural heritage. Historical library buildings have good mass and thermal inertia but often have inadequate windows with low light transmission value. Lighting systems are often without control and thus cause poor lighting conditions. Our present research concerns the energy sustainability assessment of retrofit operations for lighting in an existing historical university library, focusing on lighting quality, adequate lighting conditions for visual tasks, vision ergonomics and well-being, and guaranteeing the preventive conservation and protection of heritage books. This case study is very particular, because it concerns a Florentine historical monastery which is now a university library. Our proposed method introduces an optimal toolset for lighting design solutions with the aim of sustainability. The library indoor space was procedurally decomposed into illumination volumes according to different occupant activities and visual tasks and different use areas. This method is extensible to all similar cultural heritage case, but also existing old buildings and current designs.

The aim of this study is the numerical investigation of the capacity of porous hygroscopic building materials to damp indoor humidity variations due to external environmental loads and internal sources due to heat and moisture exchange. By means of numerical simulation, building material moisture content is computed by using a basic approach based on a diffusion model. Subsequently, a model incorporating the isothermal sorption curves of materials and complete thermal analysis is elaborated. The first modelling approach is more appropriate for material characterization even though it requires more time for modelling implementation and involves greater computational costs. The second modelling approach is useful for the assessment of hygro-thermal behaviour and energy performance of complex building components made of different materials. Moreover, this second approach can be easily applied to a 3D solid model of complex geometrical and architectural layouts. Results involve two different geometries. The first geometry belongs to a 1cm sized cube and represents the test system used in our study. The second one is representative of a usual building wall with a thermal bridge, consisting of different layers. From results analysis, it can be deduced that a more accurate numerical approach, using thermos-physical properties, porosity and hygroscopicity of materials and their corresponding sorption isotherm curves as input data, could be proposed for material characterisation and hygrothermal behaviour evaluation, in relation to the real physical indoor and outdoor transient climatic conditions. On the other hand, in many practical technical applications, our two proposed approaches can comprehensibly describe the investigated process combined with building-plant system energy performances, depending on the implementation process and computational costs we can implement.

In the present study microclimate and airflow patterns in a real operating theatre (OT) under effective use conditions are investigated. Surgical staff movements and sliding door opening/closing effects on the air thermal distribution and velocity fields are considered. Experimental measurements and numerical simulations are carried out for the “at rest” and “operational” conditions of the OT. Two “operational” use conditions are considered: “correct” and “incorrect” during a simulated hip surgery. Numerical and experimental results comparisons are used to check their compliance with the standard limits. Results mainly show the ventilation system effectiveness in providing the expected conditions, even though local perturbations due to operational conditions are clearly pointed out.

Many literature studies demonstrated that technologies belonging to cognitive neuroscience can be used in museums. Physics, optics, thermodynamics and neurosciences applications can provide an important support to applied and practical research for lighting our Cultural Heritage. In our research we provided a multidisciplinary integrated approach for the study of the luminous climate inside a historical building: Villa La Quiete in Florence is the case study. The quantitative measurements of the relationship between observer and artworks were performed, with eye-tracking technique application. The Information Theory, read on a thermodynamic basis, the ergonomy of the multi-perceptive learning and optical physics, were the fundamental tools for the assessment of the correct light sources in terms of spectral emission and colour light temperature. The eye-tracking technique combined with the results of lighting parameter quantification, allowed checking how the colour of light changes the observer's perception, and from the information theory point of view, the communication and interpretation process of the signals due to different lighting. At the same time, it was also possible to measure by assessing the perceptive data of the visual path, and thus the neg-entropy, the informative content of the interaction of light with works of art.

A study on performances of different ventilation schemes provided by vertical and horizontal uni-directional air flow was carried out in a standard orthopaedic operating theatre (OT). Starting from our previous studies of a real OT under operating use conditions, in this research different air flow configurations, considering some air curtain solutions on the ceiling and at the sliding door always assumed to be open as a basic boundary condition, were investigated by numerical simulations. Indoor air quality (IAQ) indexes and thermal comfort parameters, deduced from simulation results were calculated and discussed referring to the best performance and efficacy between the air flow schemes to contrast the incorrect use conditions of the OT. Referring to the studied schemes, the reciprocal comparison emphasizes that a successful outcome in preventing surgical site infection can depend as much on resolving human factors (i.e. operational use conditions, door opening/closing), as on overcoming physical and technical obstacles.

The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of surgical staff on the indoor air quality in a uni-directional ventilation Operating Theatre (OT). Experimental measurements of particles and microclimate were acquired at rest and in operational conditions. The real OT (operational) use was simulated by a sham hip arthroplasty. CFD simulations were carried out outlining the studied environment used for experimental measurement campaign. A standard k-e closure scheme based on RANS equations was implemented to solve the velocity and pressure field using an eddy viscosity approach. Temperature and relative humidity distributions were also computed keeping into account sensible and latent heat sources inside the OT. An Euler-based approach was applied to solve the concentration fields of gaseous contaminant and small particles (up to 5 μm in diameter) in the indoor air. An innovative strategy is proposed to estimate, by an iterative comparison between experimental data and numerical results, the emission rate of particles (differentiated by diameters) released by the occupants to be considered as source terms in the numerical model. Compliance with literature evidence concerning thermal and velocity fields and CO2 concentration was confirmed. From our analyses, some IAQ indexes were deduced, allowing monitoring of the local and overall OT air quality level supplied by the ventilating system during real operational conditions. The highest values of microbial air contamination were recorded during surgical activity; nevertheless, results showed the suitability of the ventilation system in providing the expected air quality.

Air quality, temperature variations and humidity must be controlled in historical buildings in order to avoid hazards for cultural property and in some cases also for operators and visitors. Too many variations of any of these three parameters over time, can easily accelerate the aging process of the building materials as well as rare objects and artefacts. In cultural heritage, related indoor microclimatic condition control is fundamental for appropriate preventive conservation measures. A transient simulation model, for coupled heat and mass-moisture transfer, taking into account archivist and general public movements, combined with the related sensible and latent heat released to the ambient, is provided. The proposed method is based on the indirect approach to the numerical simulation of solid object movements in a fluid combined with heat, moisture flow phenomena and multi-physical conditions. Our method can be a useful tool for the evaluation of: indoor environment and air quality, that play an important role in guaranteeing that the building provide optimal conditions with regard to the appropriate use classifications (in historical buildings conservation of artworks plays a major role); the best compromise between people working and visitor comfort and temperature, relative humidity, presence of gases and/or permitted concentration levels for conservation and maintenance of works of art; conditioning and ventilation plant solutions; compliance with regulations and standards ensuring that all the refurbishment actions must comply with national and international indications for historical buildings (in particular museums, libraries, archives, rare book and manuscript collections etc.) protection and preventive conservation of works of art in them. Transient simulation results obtained are in good agreement with the experimental data collected through a monitoring campaign on microclimatic conditions inside the 18th century Palatina Library in Parma (Italy) i.e. our case study.

An investigation for a new lighting solution of an important historical Hall, based on proposed experimental methodology and simulation models is presented. The suggested approach can be a useful example of non-invasive experimental measurement processes and lighting solutions in the field of Cultural Heritage.

The aim of this research is to investigate the thermophysical behaviour of building envelope multi-layer components and assess the whole building–plant response. The investigation was carried out in two different phases. The first phase concerned the study of the dynamic response of building envelope multi-layer components, by providing an improved implementation of the present European Standard UNI EN ISO 13786:2008. The proposed method allows one to determine the transient thermophysical performance of opaque building components that are associated with a thermal zone maintained at constant or variable air temperature. The variable internal air temperature can be associated with experimental data. The second phase consisted of a transient analysis of the above thermal zone with a conditioning plant working. The building plant simulations were carried out by EnergyPlus software. The method proposed, based on European standards, is particularly useful in the perspective of the Certification of the Energy Performance of the building–plant system, required by the European Union. It can provide a useful tool for developing an abacus of different envelope multi-layer component performances in order to support design choices.

Surgical site infections (SSIs) are the second to third most common site of health care associated infections (HAIs). It is very important to maintain good indoor air quality (IAQ) and the best ventilation system in the operating theatre (OT) to ensure health and safety for the patient and surgical team, also to reduce the risk of post-operative wound infection. Then a significant consideration in OTs is the control of aerosols, anesthesia gases and smoke. The present paper uses the airflow modeling based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to study the indoor climate of a standard ISO5 class OT with an ultraclean air filter system and a total ceiling unidirectional diffuser. The OT has a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) plant with a laminar airflow (LAF) or ultraclean ventilation. A simple method to analyze the effects of different sliding door conditions combined with crossing persons and persons with a stretcher crossing, on the OT climate, airflow patterns and the indoor pressures scheme, is provided. The proposed simulation method, that belongs to the indirect approach for a numerical simulation of solid object movements in a fluid, provides important knowledge on complex flow phenomena combined with multi-physical conditions. Results obtained by transient simulation show disruptions of the airflow inside the OT and different airflow displacement and distribution caused by surgery staff movements and sliding door opening and closing, but in particular static pressure changes in the HVAC plant system with important effects on ventilation system working conditions and its energy performances.

This paper presents a performance-based design of a HVAC plant and controller system of the “Palagio di Parte Guelfa” Palace, a medieval building converted into a museum in the city of Firenze. Transient simulations to evaluate the internal microclimate conditions during the year for the building and the different system plant were carried out. A comparison between the indoor microclimatic parameters obtained and the values suggested by the standards on protection and conservation of historical works of art, suggested a non-invasive and reversible plant system solution. The MuseumofHistorical Footballbuilding portion is the case study. The proposed plant, a constant air flow system coupled with radiant panels dry mounted above the existing flooring, was simulated throughout the year under transient conditions to evaluate its energy performance. This solution ensures indoor temperature and humidity values suitable for the conservation of works of art and visitor comfort. It is an example of a possible course of action for a plant refurbishment in a historic building converted into a museum, located in climatic regions characterized by high thermal and solar loads. The present paper concerns the study of an integrated and reversible architectural-plant solution proposed: reversibility of the proposed system is understood as the possibility for the present conditions being easily restored.

Airflow and ventilation are particularly important in healthcare rooms for controlling thermo-hygrometric conditions, providing anaesthetic gas removal, diluting airborne bacterial contamination and minimizing bacteria transfer airborne. An actual hospitalization room was the investigate case study. Transient simulations with computational fluid dynamics (CFD), based on the finite element method (FEM) were performed to investigate the efficiency of the existing heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) plant with a variable air volume (VAV) primary air system. Solid modelling of the room, taking into account thermo-physical properties of building materials, architectural features (e.g., window and wall orientation) and furnishing (e.g., beds, tables and lamps) arrangement of the room, inlet turbulence high induction air diffuser, the return air diffusers and two patients lying on two parallel beds was carried out. Multiphysics modelling was used: a thermo-fluidynamic model (convection-conduction and incompressible Navier-Stokes) was combined with a convection-diffusion model. Three 3D models were elaborated considering different conditions/events of the patients (i.e., the first was considered coughing and/or the second breathing). A particle tracing and diffusion model, connected to cough events, was developed to simulate the dispersal of bacteria-carrying droplets in the isolation room equipped with the existing ventilation system. An analysis of the region of droplet fallout and the dilution time of bacteria diffusion of coughed gas in the isolation room was performed. The analysis of transient simulation results concerning particle path and distance, and then particle tracing combined with their concentration, provided evidence of the formation of zones that should be checked by microclimatic and contaminant control. The present study highlights the fact that the CFD-FEM application is useful for understanding the efficiency, adequacy and reliability of the ventilation system, but also provides important suggestions for controlling air quality, patients' comfort and energy consumption in a hospital.

In this paper numerical transient simulations were used to investigate the air flow patterns, distribution and velocity, and the particulate dispersion inside an existing typical hospitalization room equipped with an advanced Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC), with Variable Air Volume (VAV) primary air system designed for immune-suppressed patients never modelled before. The three-dimensional models of the room consider different, most typical, positions of the patients. Results indicate the best conditions for the high induction air inlet diffuser and the scheme of pressures imposed in the room to provide the effective means of controlling flows containing virus droplets. We believe that our work exemplifies the usefulness of numerical investigations of HVAC performances in real situations and provides important recommendations towards disease control and careful design and optimization of ventilation in hospital settings.

The aim of our present research is to investigate possible solutions for the achievement of indoor comfort with the absence of any draft risks in the occupied zones of Cultural Heritage school building. A simple method for sustainable, reversible, and easily maintainable operations on the plant system, oriented to indoor comfort improvement and possible building-plant system refurbishment, is provided. It is based on thermal comfort assessment at an early design stage, carried out by dynamic simulation and CFD techniques. It helps to identify major ineffective equipment in historical school buildings, and potential sustainable, noninvasive, reversible, and conservative measures. Results obtained by a simulation exercise of a historical school building, a check case study, showed that the evaluation of thermal comfort conditions can be a strong guideline for reversible plant design. This guarantees building protection and preventive conservation. Refurbishment and retrofitting solutions, with a lower impact can be identified. Thus in depth assessment of the building physics and plant performance aiming at energy efficacy and sustainability, can contribute to finding out the balance between energy saving, sustainability, and quality of life. Our method can be a useful tool for effectiveness analysis on retrofit and refurbishment measures for similar case studies.

Italy has a huge cultural heritage, most of which consists of historical buildings that have changed their original function and use over time. The complex question of building and plant system refurbishment and retrofitting mainly derives from this crucial aspect. The aim of this paper is to provide a simple provisional tool useful for the assessment of efficient, energy sustainable refurbishment solutions for historical buildings and their plant systems. The Dante Alighieri high school (with an important music department) in Florence was the case study. We proposed a method based on dynamic simulations that allows plant design guarantying indoor air quality (IAQ) and thermal comfort, as well as energy efficiency, but, at the same time offering reversibility and mobility as well as ease of management and maintenance. Transient simulations of building-plant system were specifically addressed dynamic control and adaptive proportional regulation, so as to ensure that the plant adapts to the change of building and indoor environment thermo-physics and thermo-hygrometric parameters. Results showed that important refurbishment and retrofitting operations for energy saving are possible and effective for historical buildings if they are oriented to sustainability&mdash, i.e., low environmental impact, indoor thermo-hygrometric conditions, ventilation, air quality, and user wellbeing improvement&mdash, in compliance with preventive protection constraints.

The aim of our research is to investigate the physical connection between light, perception, and information by means of an integrated methodological approach. The proposed method was used for sustainable lighting design aiming at light efficacy and quality, visual perception, communication, and energy saving. Three types of synergic measurement were carried out: photometric, colourimetric, and perception measurements. Starting from the results and the post-processing of photometric and colourimetric measurements on different light sources and fresco surfaces, by applying the eye-tracking technique for eye movement analysis of a people sample, entropy calculations were carried out. The results of observer perception and preferences, patterns of their visual scanning due to different LED (Light Emitting Diode) sources, were quantified by means of Shannon entropy calculation and, consequently, the information content of images that each light source can transmit. A new lighting proposal, based on the use of LED sources characterized by a spectral emission of light in strong compliance with surface colour and relevant transmission image content information was suggested and checked by transient simulations. Our proposal was based on sustainability because this concept is linked to developing perception and visual wellbeing, information, light communication, and lower energy consumption for maintenance, but especially for preventive conservation and the protection of works of art by means quality of light.

The present paper provides a qualitative and quantitative approach to natural lighting design for the Hall of Two Hundred in Palazzo Vecchio (the present town hall) in Florence. Starting from transient simulation of natural lighting inside the Hall in its present state, using the commercial software Radiance, a design proposal was suggested, detecting the optimal conditions for tapestry conservation and maintenance and taking into account their periodical exhibition, designing a proper wall show-case solution. The suggested design does not modify the architecture and structure of the building. The distribution of natural lighting and consequently of the illuminance and luminance inside the ambient, suggested a solution for exhibition of the historical tapestries, which can guarantee not only tapestry conservation but also the Hall structure and its present uses. The design proposal provides a comfortable lighting environment, rehabilitation and improvement of the historical perception and sight of these works of art, under variable sun and sky conditions throughout the year.

This paper investigates the airflow patterns connected to different cough conditions, the effects of these arrangements on the regions of droplet fallout and dilution time of virus diffusion of coughed gas. We focus on some of the physical processes that occur in a double bed hospital isolation room, investigating the effect of the ventilation system on the spread of particles in air. A cough model was carried out and used for the numerical simulation of virus diffusion inside an existent isolation room. Transient simulations of air pattern diffusion and air velocity field, provided by the existing typical HVAC primary air system designed for infectious patients, were performed using CFD. A multiphysics approach, combined Convection-Conduction, Incompressible Navier-Stokes models on non-isothermal air flow and Convection-Diffusion, was used. Simulations results highlighted that the flow field and velocity distribution induced by the high turbulence air inlet diffuser combined with the air return diffusers produce wide recirculation zones near the wall and partial stagnation areas near the ceiling and between the two beds, but lower particle concentration in the room and their shorter spreading distance. This type of analysis is certainly cost effective to identify all the air recirculation zones which can harbour lingering pathogens.

Some architectural structures inside historical buildings are often interpreted as cooling systems. The problem is the knowledge about the real functioning of these systems during the past and at the present. Full scale measurements can provide data on ventilation rate, airflow distribution, mean air velocity around and inside a building, but these experiments are really expensive and time consuming. In this paper, the airflow patterns, distribution and velocity and the air temperature distribution inside a historical building in Palermo (Italy) were investigated by a transient simulation. A three-dimensional model of the library room, actually used as book deposit, where an ancient natural ventilation system is operating, was investigated using a CFD tool during the hottest day of the summer of 2006 in Palermo. The simulation results are in agreement with the trends of air velocity and temperature of the experimental values measured during a test campaign.

This paper presents a qualitative and quantitative approach to natural lighting design for historical buildings, in this particular case study used as a public library. The interior design proposed for the old library of Palagio di Parte Guelfa in Florence, was based on solar radiation control and advanced daylight system application (two light shelves, a sky light and two light pipes) without modifying the architecture and structure of the building. The main objectives of the project were to increase lighting energy savings due to less artificial lighting system utilization, the corresponding daylight illuminance levels at long indoor distances from the windows, and to improve the uniformity of luminance distribution and illuminance gradient across the work-plane and at different inside levels and a comfortable lighting environment under variable sun and sky conditions throughout the year. A method was also proposed for evaluating daylight distribution in rooms of ancient buildings with small transparent surfaces and high thermal inertia, using solar shadings and light redirecting devices. It enabled a simplified hourly evaluation of the daylight utilization with reasonable accuracy and calculation speed and, because it was coupled to a simplified thermal model, evaluation of the impact of daylight utilization on hourly temperatures, heating and cooling demand.

Energy performances and building quality can be achieved by high performance envelopes. In this paper the thermal and mechanical performances of external cladding, applied to a traditional wall, largely used in existing buildings, were investigated by a transient simulation. Result comparison with the thermal performances obtained by simulating the wall without the insulation system showed that external insulation is particularly effective in reducing cooling and heating loads and can also guarantee indoor thermal comfort. Fatigue stresses of the external cladding, investigated by ANSYS simulation, showed that continuous change of the loads over time with limited cyclic stress can cause deterioration of materials.

We suggest a method to identify the suitability of a chosen indoor environment for paper material conservation in historical libraries. Our approach is based on two steps: numerical simulation for solving the air velocity, moisture and temperature fields, and then post-processing indexes evaluation to assess how the indoor microclimatic conditions can be favourable or not to the growth and development of microorganisms responsible for paper deterioration. A real case study was analysed in two different conditions: one the present situation and the other proposed by the authors with a HVAC system assuring controlled air temperature and RH levels. Numerical models, validated by experimental data published in previous works, were used to carry out microclimatic results. Starting from these results, some indexes suggested by the scientific literature were computed to check the suitability of the indoor environment for preserving a library heritage. Boolean parameters were also deduced from the combination of microclimatic factors favouring the growth of microorganisms responsible for paper material deterioration. Our research can provide a methodological approach that predictively allows one to know when, where and how the processes responsible for indoor microorganism activity can find the microclimatic conditions for their kick-off and triggering, and then their areas of potential growth. The proposed method highlights the main causes of the deterioration processes connected to building thermo-physics. Simulation results turned out to be a fundamental approach to identify the risky zones and potential areas of triggering deterioration processes of all the materials present.

The use of numerical simulation methods for the Cultural Heritage is of increasing importance for the analysis, conservation, restoration and appreciation of works of art. This is particularly important when their preservation and planned maintenance is the primary aim. Today museums, and particularly historical buildings converted to museums, should be considered as places where precious artefacts should have first-rate protection and conservation. It is a question of solving the compromise between protection, conservation and comfort for works of art and/or visitors, with the consequence that preservation and planned maintenance criteria must prevail over use requirements. Refurbishment and conservation of a building, and requirements for visitor presence and works of art need different thermo-physical indoor parameter values. The present paper concerns the thermal and air velocity analysis of the Salone dei Duecento (the Hall of the Two Hundred of the Palazzo Vecchio (Old Palace)) in Florence. In this paper an appropriate transient 3D model by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software based on the finite element method (FEM) was used. Variations and interaction between indoor and outdoor microclimatic conditions, and thermo-physical behaviour of the building connected to lighting, visitor presence and cooling–heating fan coils system were considered. The 3D modelling method provided by the present paper can be applied to several situations where there is interaction between outdoor and indoor climate variations and the building structure. It can be very useful for defining measures to preserve tapestries, understanding deterioration processes, and developing new conservation techniques and strategies for care and exhibition.
