“Hydrotropie” ist die Fahigkeit wassriger Salzlosungen, in Wasser unlosliche Korper aufzulosen. Diese Eigenschaft kommt Alkalisalzen von Souren der C7- und C8-Reihe zu. Vergleichsweise wurden untersucht: n-heptylsaures, benzoesaures, hexahydrobenzoesaures und methyl-cyclopentan-carbonsaures Natrium. Das Auflosungsvermogen des Heptylats war meist grosser als das der cyclischen Verbindungen; von ihnen wirken die hydroaromatischen Vertreter, insbesondere das Cyclopentan-derivat, kraftiger als die rein aromatische Substanz. Auch zwischen den correspondierenden Korpern n-Caprylat, Phenyl-acetat sowie o-, m- u. p-Toluylat offenbaren sich Unterschiede. Hydrotropic ist ferner bei den isomeren Stoffen p-toluolsulfosaurem u. benzylsulfosaurem Natrium nachzuweisen. Manche Beobachtungen sprechen zu Gunsten der Anschauung, dass Additionen unter Bildung instabiler Abkommlinge von Ortho-sauren, wie R.C(OH)3 bezw. R.SO(OH)3, stattfinden.

In the course of various reactions of sugars with alkaline materials substances of the 3-carbon series are formed, i.e. methylglyoxal (MG) or acetol (A) or mixtures of the two. MG may be determined quantitatively by enzymatic dismutation with the enzyme ketonealdehydmutase and manometric measurement of the lactic acid formed. A remains unchanged during this procedure and may be determined as its 2,4-dinitrophenylosazone or by a reduction method. By oxidation with bromine water MG is quantitatively converted into pyruvic acid which can be determined as its 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone. MG and A can be precipitated together as 2,4-dinitrophenylosazone; substraction of the value corresponding to the MG and found by bromine water oxydation or enzymatic dismutation indicates the A content.

The ability of soluble salts of ATP to solubilize numerous inorganic and organic compounds in neutral or slightly alkaline medium and to keep these compounds in solution is demonstrated. The latter can be natural products or synthetic substances. Difficulty soluble salts of ATP themselves are solubilized at physiological conditions of pH and temperature by other solubilizing agents. Among the latter are normal constituents of cells and products of intermediary metabolism. To these phenomena connected in different ways with ATP might be attributed essentiality as ATP is an omnicellular substance and plays a part in the course of many important biological processes.

Zusammenfassung Im Anschluss an Betrachtungen uber Entstehung, Verhalten und Bedeutung der 3-Kohlenstoffkorper, in insbesondere der freien wie phosphorylierten Triosen, wird folgendes gezeigt: Gewohnliche obergarige und untergarige Hefen, die Dioxyaceton und Glycerinaldehyde nicht vergaren, bewirken keine phytochemische Reduktion der beiden Triosen GlyGlycerin. Die 3-Kohlenstoffzucker werden nicht verandert. Sie sind in Konzentrationen von 1% fur Hefe ungifitig und verhindern die glatte Vergarung zugefurghter Zymohexosen. Die Resistenz der Tiosen gegen phytochemische Reduktion ist insofern bemerkenswert, als die Desoxytriosen, Acetol und Milchsaurealhedyd, ebenso wie das Anhydrid der Tiosen, das Methylglyoxal, unter vergleichbaren Bedingungen zu dem mit Glycerol nahe verwandten Propylenglykol reduziert werden. Die verwendeten Hefen sind zu Biordduktionen durchaus geeignet befunden worden. Sie fuhren Cyclopentanon in Cyclopentanol, d - und d , l -Campherchinon durch Bioreduktion einer Carbonylgruppe in Oxycampher und Isocapronaldehyd in 2-Methylpentanol-1 uber. Sobald dazu die Moglichkeit besteht, verlauft die phytochemische Reduktion asymmetrisch. Diese ist nunmehr auch in der Cyclopentanreihe und bei einem. Diketon der hydroaromatischen Reihe verwirklicht worden.

The effect of the carbamate reaction on the great solubilization cycle of calcium carbonate and calcium phosphate was studied. Essentially the principle of solubilization was found to be based on the primary formation of bicarbonates. Synthetic as well as natural carbonates and phosphates were used as substrates, with the natural compounds showing superior solubility. Amino acids and autolyzates were used as reactants mediating carbamate formation. Amines did not show significant effects. Optimum results were obtained with alanine.

Unter diesen Umstanden ist das Koferment so weit geschadigt oder entfernt, das bei Einwirkung des Tumor-Materials auf Hexosephosphat sich bildendes Methylglyoxal nicht verbraucht, sondern angesammelt wird. Der Ertrag belauft sich auf 52% der Theorie. 3. Da auch unter den gewahlten Versuchsbedingungen ein Teil des entstandenen Methylglyoxals noch umgewandelt wird und als Substrat hinzugefugtes Methylglyoxal verschwindet, ergibt sich, das der Weg der Milchsaurebildung im Tumor der gleiche ist wie bei anderen glykolytischen Systemen. 4. Mit dem selben Vorgehen gelingt es, die Entstehung von Methylglyoxal im embryonalen Gewebe des Huhns darzutun. Die Ausbeute ist ebenfalls gut.

The importance of phosphorus compounds in metabolism has been established by the work of many investigators. Neuberg and others have shown that rather simple, naturally occurring phosphates can solubilize many physiologically important substrates. A detailed study of the sodium salt of d (−)-3-phosphoglyceric acid (Na2PGA) has been made. This salt has been shown to be a good solubilizing agent for many water-insoluble salts, such as calcium carbonate. The eight most common metals of biological significance: calcium, cobalt, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, nickel, and zinc were selected for detailed studies. Using the enzyme phosphatase it has been shown that once a soluble PGA complex is formed, it can be hydrolyzed to liberate phosphate under physiological conditions of pH and temperature. The rates of decomposition for all salts studied were quite similar. Spectrophotometric analysis of the complexes formed indicated a 1:1 combining ratio for calcium, copper, nickel, and manganese with PGA. Cobalt formed a double salt and magnesium a triple salt, whereas the ferric ion seemed to form several types of complex salts. Magnetic measurements proved the nickel complex to be square planar.
