IntroductionPalbociclib is a widely used treatment for advanced breast cancer in older adults. However, the existing evidence regarding its safety and tolerability in this age group is inconsistent and limited to retrospective subgroup or pooled analyses.Materials and methodsWe conducted a prospective single-arm multicenter phase 2 study to evaluate the safety and tolerability of palbociclib in participants aged 70 years or older with advanced hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. Participants were given palbociclib in combination with their physician's choice of endocrine therapy (letrozole or fulvestrant). The primary endpoint was the incidence of grade 3+ adverse events (AEs) by six months. Secondary endpoints included AE-related dose delays, dose reductions, early discontinuations, and hospitalizations. Additionally, we compared these endpoints by age groups (70-74 and ≥ 75 years).ResultsOf the 90 participants (median age 74 years [70-87]) enrolled, 75.6% (95% confidence interval [CI], 65.4-84.0) had grade 3+ AEs by six months. The most frequent grade 3+ AEs were neutropenia (61%), fatigue (4%), and nausea (3%). Febrile neutropenia was uncommon (1.1%). Due to AEs, 36% had dose delays, 34% had dose reductions, 10% had early discontinuations, and 10% had hospitalizations. Compared to those aged 70-74 years, participants aged ≥75 years had higher rates of early discontinuations (5.9% vs 15.9%, a difference of 9.5% [95% CI 3.5%-22.5%]).DiscussionPalbociclib has an overall favorable safety profile in adults aged ≥70 with advanced breast cancer. However, adults ≥75 years had a trend toward higher rates of AE-related early discontinuations compared to those 70-74 years. Clinical trials frequently include multiple end points that mature at different times. The initial report, typically based on the primary end point, may be published when key planned co-primary or secondary analyses are not yet available. Clinical Trial Updates provide an opportunity to disseminate additional results from studies, published in JCO or elsewhere, for which the primary end point has already been reported.Sacituzumab govitecan (SG), a first-in-class anti-trophoblast cell surface antigen 2 (Trop-2) antibody-drug conjugate, demonstrated superior efficacy over single-agent chemotherapy (treatment of physicians choice [TPC]) in patients with metastatic triple-negative breast cancer (mTNBC) in the international, multicenter, phase III ASCENT study.Patients were randomly assigned 1:1 to receive SG or TPC until unacceptable toxicity/progression. Final efficacy secondary end point analyses and post hoc analyses of outcomes stratified by Trop-2 expression and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 status are reported. Updated safety analyses are provided.In this final analysis, SG (n = 267) improved median progression-free survival (PFS; 4.8 v 1.7 months; hazard ratio (HR), 0.41 [95% CI, 0.33 to 0.52]) and median overall survival (OS; 11.8 v 6.9 months; HR, 0.51 [95% CI, 0.42 to 0.63]) over TPC (n = 262). SG improved PFS over TPC in each Trop-2 expression quartile (n = 168); a trend was observed for improved OS across quartiles. Overall, SG had a manageable safety profile, with ≤5% of treatment-related discontinuations because of adverse events and no treatment-related deaths. The safety profile was consistent across all subgroups.These data confirm the clinical benefit of SG over chemotherapy, reinforcing SG as an effective treatment option in patients with mTNBC in the second line or later.

In this post hoc analysis of the ASCENT study, we compared outcomes with sacituzumab govitecan (SG) vs single-agent chemotherapy in clinically important subgroups of patients with metastatic triple-negative breast cancer (mTNBC). Patients with mTNBC refractory to/relapsing after ≥2 prior chemotherapies (≥1 in the metastatic setting) were randomized 1:1 to receive SG or treatment of physicians choice (TPC) until unacceptable toxicity/progression. The primary endpoint was progression-free survival (PFS) per RECIST 1.1 by central review in patients without brain metastases. Patients with brain metastases were allowed if metastases were stable ≥4 weeks. In the intention-to-treat (ITT) population, 19% of patients were age ≥65 years; 12% were Black, and 12% had brain metastases. SG improved PFS and overall survival (OS), respectively, vs TPC in patients age ≥65 years (7.1 vs 2.4 months and 14.7 vs 8.9 months), or of Black race (5.4 vs 2.2 months and 13.8 vs 8.5 months), consistent with outcomes in the ITT population. Patients with brain metastases had numerically higher median PFS with SG vs TPC, but median OS was similar between treatment groups. SG was well tolerated and had a manageable safety profile consistent with the full safety population across all subgroups; neutropenia and diarrhea were the most common treatment-emergent adverse events. These findings confirm the meaningful clinical benefit of SG vs standard chemotherapy in patient subgroups with high unmet needs. SG should be considered an effective and safe treatment option for patients with mTNBC eligible for second-line or later therapy. ClinicalTrials.gov Number: NCT02574455.

BackgroundReproductive factors have been shown to be differentially associated with risk of estrogen receptor (ER)-positive and ER-negative breast cancer. However, their associations with intrinsic-like subtypes are less clear.MethodsAnalyses included up to 23 353 cases and 71 072 controls pooled from 31 population-based case-control or cohort studies in the Breast Cancer Association Consortium across 16 countries on 4 continents. Polytomous logistic regression was used to estimate the association between reproductive factors and risk of breast cancer by intrinsic-like subtypes (luminal A-like, luminal B-like, luminal B-HER2-like, HER2-enriched-like, and triple-negative breast cancer) and by invasiveness. All statistical tests were 2-sided.ResultsCompared with nulliparous women, parous women had a lower risk of luminal A-like, luminal B-like, luminal B-HER2-like, and HER2-enriched-like disease. This association was apparent only after approximately 10 years since last birth and became stronger with increasing time (odds ratio [OR] = 0.59, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.49 to 0.71; and OR = 0.36, 95% CI = 0.28 to 0.46 for multiparous women with luminal A-like tumors 20 to less than 25 years after last birth and 45 to less than 50 years after last birth, respectively). In contrast, parous women had a higher risk of triple-negative breast cancer right after their last birth (for multiparous women: OR = 3.12, 95% CI = 2.02 to 4.83) that was attenuated with time but persisted for decades (OR = 1.03, 95% CI = 0.79 to 1.34, for multiparous women 25 to less than 30 years after last birth). Older age at first birth (Pheterogeneity < .001 for triple-negative compared with luminal A-like breast cancer) and breastfeeding (Pheterogeneity < .001 for triple-negative compared with luminal A-like breast cancer) were associated with lower risk of triple-negative breast cancer but not with other disease subtypes. Younger age at menarche was associated with higher risk of all subtypes; older age at menopause was associated with higher risk of luminal A-like but not triple-negative breast cancer. Associations for in situ tumors were similar to luminal A-like.ConclusionsThis large and comprehensive study demonstrates a distinct reproductive risk factor profile for triple-negative breast cancer compared with other subtypes, with implications for the understanding of disease etiology and risk prediction.

Students with chronic and complex medical conditions often require assistive technologies in order to accommodate both physical and cognitive needs. Survivors of childhood cancer who are eligible for special education offer a lens through which to examine barriers to assistive technology assessment, acquisition, use, and support for students with health impairments. In this article, we examine literature that suggests that special education students with a history of cancer are unlikely to gain access to assistive technology, despite clearly demonstrated needs. We discuss assistive technology literature to determine research-supported steps schools can take to increase and improve access to assistive technology for students with chronic and complex medical conditions.

Patients with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) who relapse early after (neo)adjuvant chemotherapy have more aggressive disease. In the ASCENT trial, sacituzumab govitecan (SG), an antibody-drug conjugate composed of an anti-Trop-2 antibody coupled to SN-38 via a hydrolyzable linker, improved outcomes over single-agent chemotherapy of physician's choice (TPC) in metastatic TNBC (mTNBC). Of 468 patients without known baseline brain metastases, 33/235 vs 32/233 patients (both 14%) in the SG vs TPC arms, respectively, received one line of therapy in the metastatic setting and experienced disease recurrence ≤12 months after (neo)adjuvant chemotherapy. SG prolonged progression-free survival (median 5.7 vs 1.5 months [HR, 0.41; 95% CI, 0.22-0.76]) and overall survival (median 10.9 vs 4.9 months [HR, 0.51; 95% CI, 0.28-0.91]) vs TPC, with a manageable safety profile in this subgroup consistent with the overall population. In this second-line setting, as with later-line therapy, SG improved survival over conventional chemotherapy for patients with mTNBC.

Sacituzumab govitecan (SG) is an anti-Trop-2 antibody-drug conjugate with an SN-38 payload. In the ASCENT study, patients with metastatic triple-negative breast cancer (mTNBC) relapsed/refractory to ≥2 prior chemotherapy regimens (≥1 in the metastatic setting), received SG or single-agent treatment of physician's choice (eribulin, vinorelbine, capecitabine, or gemcitabine). This ASCENT safety analysis includes the impact of age and UGT1A1 polymorphisms, which hinder SN-38 detoxification. SG demonstrated a manageable safety profile in patients with mTNBC, including those ≥65 years; neutropenia/diarrhea are key adverse events (AE). Patients with UGT1A1 *28/*28 genotype versus those with 1/*28 and *1/*1 genotypes had higher rates of grade ≥3 SG-related neutropenia (59% vs 47% and 53%), febrile neutropenia (18% vs 5% and 3%), anemia (15% vs 6% and 4%), and diarrhea (15% vs 9% and 10%), respectively. Individuals with UGT1A1 *28/*28 genotype should be monitored closely; active monitoring and routine AE management allow optimal therapeutic exposure of SG.

PURPOSE: Predictive biomarkers to identify patients with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive breast cancer who may benefit from targeted therapy alone are required. We hypothesized that early measurements of tumor maximum standardized uptake value corrected for lean body mass (SULmax) on 18F-labeled fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) would predict pathologic complete response (pCR) to pertuzumab and trastuzumab (PT). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with stage II or III, estrogen receptor-negative, HER2-positive breast cancer received four cycles of neoadjuvant PT. 18F-labeled fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography-computed tomography was performed at baseline and 15 days after PT initiation (C1D15). Eighty evaluable patients were required to test the null hypothesis that the area under the curve of percent change in SULmax by C1D15 predicting pCR is ≤ 0.65, with a one-sided type I error rate of 10%. RESULTS: Eighty-eight women were enrolled (83 evaluable), and 85% (75 of 88) completed all four cycles of PT. pCR after PT alone was 22%. Receiver operator characteristic analysis of percent change in SULmax by C1D15 yielded an area under the curve of 0.72 (80% CI, 0.64 to 0.80; one-sided P = .12), which did not reject the null hypothesis. However, between patients who obtained pCR and who did not, a significant difference in median percent reduction in SULmax by C1D15 was observed (63.8% v 41.8%; P = .004) and SULmax reduction ≥ 40% was more prevalent (83% v 52%; P = .03; positive predictive value, 31%). Participants not obtaining a 40% reduction in SULmax by C1D15 were unlikely to obtain pCR (negative predictive value, 91%). CONCLUSION: Although the primary objective was not met, early changes in SULmax predict response to PT in estrogen receptor-negative and HER2-positive breast cancer. Once optimized, this quantitative imaging strategy may facilitate tailoring of therapy in this setting.

PURPOSE: To develop guideline recommendations concerning optimal neoadjuvant therapy for breast cancer. METHODS: ASCO convened an Expert Panel to conduct a systematic review of the literature on neoadjuvant therapy for breast cancer and provide recommended care options. RESULTS: A total of 41 articles met eligibility criteria and form the evidentiary basis for the guideline recommendations. RECOMMENDATIONS: Patients undergoing neoadjuvant therapy should be managed by a multidisciplinary care team. Appropriate candidates for neoadjuvant therapy include patients with inflammatory breast cancer and those in whom residual disease may prompt a change in therapy. Neoadjuvant therapy can also be used to reduce the extent of local therapy or reduce delays in initiating therapy. Although tumor histology, grade, stage, and estrogen, progesterone, and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) expression should routinely be used to guide clinical decisions, there is insufficient evidence to support the use of other markers or genomic profiles. Patients with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) who have clinically node-positive and/or at least T1c disease should be offered an anthracycline- and taxane-containing regimen; those with cT1a or cT1bN0 TNBC should not routinely be offered neoadjuvant therapy. Carboplatin may be offered to patients with TNBC to increase pathologic complete response. There is currently insufficient evidence to support adding immune checkpoint inhibitors to standard chemotherapy. In patients with hormone receptor (HR)-positive (HR-positive), HER2-negative tumors, neoadjuvant chemotherapy can be used when a treatment decision can be made without surgical information. Among postmenopausal patients with HR-positive, HER2-negative disease, hormone therapy can be used to downstage disease. Patients with node-positive or high-risk node-negative, HER2-positive disease should be offered neoadjuvant therapy in combination with anti-HER2-positive therapy. BackgroundWe examined the prognostic significance of circulating tumor cell (CTC) dynamics during treatment in metastatic breast cancer (MBC) patients receiving first-line chemotherapy.MethodsSerial CTC data from 469 patients (2202 samples) were used to build a novel latent mixture model to identify groups with similar CTC trajectory (tCTC) patterns during the course of treatment. Cox regression was used to estimate hazard ratios for progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) in groups based on baseline CTCs, combined CTC status at baseline to the end of cycle 1, and tCTC. Akaike information criterion was used to select the model that best predicted PFS and OS.ResultsLatent mixture modeling revealed 4 distinct tCTC patterns: undetectable CTCs (56.9% ), low (23.7%), intermediate (14.5%), or high (4.9%). Patients with low, intermediate, and high tCTC patterns had statistically significant inferior PFS and OS compared with those with undetectable CTCs (P < .001). Akaike Information Criterion indicated that the tCTC model best predicted PFS and OS compared with baseline CTCs and combined CTC status at baseline to the end of cycle 1 models. Validation studies in an independent cohort of 1856 MBC patients confirmed these findings. Further validation using only a single pretreatment CTC measurement confirmed prognostic performance of the tCTC model.ConclusionsWe identified 4 novel prognostic groups in MBC based on similarities in tCTC patterns during chemotherapy. Prognostic groups included patients with very poor outcome (intermediate + high CTCs, 19.4%) who could benefit from more effective treatment. Our novel prognostic classification approach may be used for fine-tuning of CTC-based risk stratification strategies to guide future prospective clinical trials in MBC.

The role of clinical researchers is vital to cancer progress. The teaching, research, and leadership roles that academic oncologists hold need to be accounted for and appropriately compensated. National metrics are currently inexistent, but are necessary to move the oncology research field forward. Clinical research and routine clinical care must be harmoniously integrated without competing. This article reviews the national landscape of clinical cancer research and proposes a call for action.

PurposeWe evaluated the prognostic and predictive value of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) hormone receptor-positive (HR+) metastatic breast cancer (MBC) patients randomized to letrozole alone or letrozole plus bevacizumab in the first-line setting (CALGB 40503).Experimental designBlood samples were collected at pretreatment and three additional time points during therapy. The presence of ≥5 CTCs per 7.5 mL of blood was considered CTC positive. Association of CTCs with progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) was assessed using Cox regression models.ResultsOf 343 patients treated, 294 had CTC data and were included in this analysis. Median follow-up was 39 months. In multivariable analysis, CTC-positive patients at baseline (31%) had significantly reduced PFS [HR, 1.49; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.12-1.97] and OS (HR, 2.08; 95% CI, 1.49-2.93) compared with CTC negative. Failure to clear CTCs during treatment was associated with significantly increased risk of progression (HR, 2.2; 95% CI, 1.58-3.07) and death (HR, 3.4; 95% CI, 2.36-4.88). CTC-positive patients who received only letrozole had the worse PFS (HR, 2.3; 95% CI, 1.54-3.47) and OS (HR, 2.6; 95% CI, 1.59-4.40). Median PFS in CTC-positive patients was significantly longer (18.0 vs. 7.0 months) in letrozole plus bevacizumab versus letrozole arm (P = 0.0009). Restricted mean survival time analysis further revealed that addition of bevacizumab was associated with PFS benefit in both CTC-positive and CTC-negative patients, but OS benefit was only observed in CTC-positive patients.ConclusionsCTCs were highly prognostic for the addition of bevacizumab to first-line letrozole in patients with HR+ MBC in CALGB 40503. Further research to determine the potential predictive value of CTCs in this setting is warranted.

PurposeIn the HER2CLIMB study, patients with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive breast cancer with brain metastases (BMs) showed statistically significant improvement in progression-free survival (PFS) with tucatinib. We describe exploratory analyses of intracranial efficacy and survival in participants with BMs.Patients and methodsPatients were randomly assigned 2:1 to tucatinib or placebo, in combination with trastuzumab and capecitabine. All patients underwent baseline brain magnetic resonance imaging; those with BMs were classified as active or stable. Efficacy analyses were performed by applying RECIST 1.1 criteria to CNS target lesions by investigator assessment. CNS-PFS (intracranial progression or death) and overall survival (OS) were evaluated in all patients with BMs. Confirmed intracranial objective response rate (ORR-IC) was evaluated in patients with measurable intracranial disease.ResultsThere were 291 patients with BMs: 198 (48%) in the tucatinib arm and 93 (46%) in the control arm. The risk of intracranial progression or death was reduced by 68% in the tucatinib arm (hazard ratio [HR], 0.32; 95% CI, 0.22 to 0.48; P < .0001). Median CNS-PFS was 9.9 months in the tucatinib arm versus 4.2 months in the control arm. Risk of death was reduced by 42% in the tucatinib arm (OS HR, 0.58; 95% CI, 0.40 to 0.85; P = .005). Median OS was 18.1 versus 12.0 months. ORR-IC was higher in the tucatinib arm (47.3%; 95% CI, 33.7% to 61.2%) versus the control arm (20.0%; 95% CI, 5.7% to 43.7%; P = .03).ConclusionIn patients with HER2-positive breast cancer with BMs, the addition of tucatinib to trastuzumab and capecitabine doubled ORR-IC, reduced risk of intracranial progression or death by two thirds, and reduced risk of death by nearly half. To our knowledge, this is the first regimen to demonstrate improved antitumor activity against BMs in patients with HER2-positive breast cancer in a randomized, controlled trial.

PURPOSE:The Adjuvant Paclitaxel and Trastuzumab trial was designed to address treatment of patients with small human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive breast cancer. The primary analysis of the Adjuvant Paclitaxel and Trastuzumab trial demonstrated a 3-year disease-free survival (DFS) of 98.7%. In this planned secondary analysis, we report longer-term outcomes and exploratory results to characterize the biology of small HER2-positive tumors and genetic factors that may predispose to paclitaxel-induced peripheral neuropathy (TIPN). PATIENTS AND METHODS:In this phase II study, patients with HER2-positive breast cancer with tumors 3 cm or smaller and negative nodes received paclitaxel (80 mg/m2) with trastuzumab for 12 weeks, followed by trastuzumab for 9 months. The primary end point was DFS. Recurrence-free interval (RFI), breast cancer-specific survival, and overall survival (OS) were also analyzed. In an exploratory analysis, intrinsic subtyping by PAM50 (Prosigna) and calculation of the risk of recurrence score were performed on the nCounter analysis system on archival tissue. Genotyping was performed to investigate TIPN. RESULTS:A total of 410 patients were enrolled from October 2007 to September 2010. After a median follow-up of 6.5 years, there were 23 DFS events. The 7-year DFS was 93% (95% CI, 90.4 to 96.2) with four (1.0%) distant recurrences, 7-year OS was 95% (95% CI, 92.4 to 97.7), and 7-year RFI was 97.5% (95% CI, 95.9 to 99.1). PAM50 analyses (n = 278) showed that most tumors were HER2-enriched (66%), followed by luminal B (14%), luminal A (13%), and basal-like (8%). Genotyping (n = 230) identified one single-nucleotide polymorphism, rs3012437, associated with an increased risk of TIPN in patients with grade 2 or greater TIPN (10.4%). CONCLUSION:With longer follow-up, adjuvant paclitaxel and trastuzumab is associated with excellent long-term outcomes. Distribution of PAM50 intrinsic subtypes in small HER2-positive tumors is similar to that previously reported for larger tumors.

PurposeWomen with HER2-positive breast cancer treated prior to effective anti-HER2 therapy have higher rates of local-regional recurrence (LRR) than those with HER2-negative disease. Effective systemic therapy, however, has been shown to decrease LRR. This study examines LRR in women with HER2-positive breast cancer treated on a single-arm prospective multicenter trial of adjuvant trastuzumab (H) and paclitaxel (T).MethodsPatients with HER2-positive tumors ≤ 3.0 cm with negative axillary nodes or micrometastatic disease were eligible. Systemic therapy included weekly T and H for 12 weeks followed by continuation of H to complete 1 year. Radiation therapy (RT) was required following breast-conserving surgery (BCS), but dose and fields were not specified. Disease-free survival (DFS) and LRR-free survival were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method.ResultsOf the 410 patients enrolled from September 2007 to September 2010, 406 initiated protocol therapy and formed the basis of this analysis. A total of 272 (67%) had hormone receptor-positive tumors. Of 162 patients undergoing mastectomy, local therapy records were unavailable for two. None of the 160 for whom records were available received RT. Among 244 BCS patients, detailed RT records were available for 217 (89%). With a median follow-up of 6.5 years, 7-year DFS was 93.3% (95% CI 90.4-96.2), and LRR-free survival was 98.6% (95% CI 97.4-99.8).ConclusionLRR in this select group of early-stage patients with HER2-positive disease receiving effective anti-HER2 therapy is extremely low. If confirmed in additional studies, future investigational efforts should focus on de-escalating local therapy.

PURPOSE: Genomic tests, such as the Oncotype Dx 21-gene and Prosigna risk of recurrence (ROR-P) assay, are commonly used for breast cancer prognostication. Emerging data suggest variability between assays, but this has not been compared in diverse populations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: RNA sequencing was performed on 647 previously untreated stage I-III estrogen receptor–positive/human epidermal growth factor receptor 2–negative tumors in the Carolina Breast Cancer Study, which oversampled Black and younger women (age <50 years at diagnosis), using research versions of two common RNA-based prognostic assays: ROR-PR and the 21-gene recurrence score (RSR). Relative frequency differences and 95% CIs were estimated for associations with race and age, and hazards of 5-year local or distant recurrence were modeled with Cox regression. Proliferation and estrogen module scores from each assay, representing broad activity of genes in those pathways, were examined to guide interpretation of differences between tests. RESULTS: Among both younger and older individuals, Black women had higher frequency of intermediate and high ROR-PR scores than non-Black women. Race was not significantly associated with RSR in either age group. High (hazard ratio [HR], 4.67 [95% CI, 1.73 to 12.70]) and intermediate (HR, 2.12 [95% CI, 0.98 to 4.62]) ROR-PR scores were associated with greater risk of recurrence, but RSR did not predict recurrence. RSR emphasized estrogen over proliferation modules, whereas ROR-PR emphasized proliferation. Higher proliferation scores were associated with younger age and Black race in both assays. Modifications to the RSR algorithm that increased emphasis on proliferation improved prognostication in this diverse population. CONCLUSION: ROR-PR and the 21-gene RSR differentially emphasize estrogen-related and proliferative biology. The emphasis of 21-gene RS on estrogen-related biology and lower endocrine therapy initiation among Black women may contribute to poorer prognostic ability in heterogeneously treated populations. Southern Cross University introduced its first Bachelor of Speech Pathology program in 2013 but with the university experiencing attrition and lower success rates, a new pedagogical approach and innovation was needed. To address these issues, Southern Cross University implemented an intensive block model of education which consists of six terms that are 6-week long to increase enrolment and success. This model was called the Southern Cross Model (SCM). This article describes how speech pathology used codesign with hospital-based clinicians to modify their curriculum from a traditional 13-week semester to intensive terms where there is a component of self-directed learning accompanied by interactive tutorials and workshops. A case study is provided specifically looking at hospital settings, and the process involved in supporting a cohort to be ready to practice. Feedback from content designers, tutors, clinical educators and students is provided to identify the process and the impact of this change and plans for future evaluation are identified. The field of Mind, Brain, and Education (MBE) has debated the strategies and merit of training teachers in principles of neuroscience. A previous study argued for groups of teachers to be trained as "educational engineers" capable of translating the work of cognitive neuroscientists and education researchers into practical application. While several teacher education programs currently offer MBE courses, we offer a program description of a "situated learning" model of MBE that brings teachers to a unique pediatric hospital with a focus on neurodevelopmental disabilities. The aims of the program are to train educational engineers capable of improving special education services through applications of MBE. Teachers participating in this program learn about neurodevelopment, behavior, models of scientific knowledge acquisition, as well as applications of educational law, policy, leadership, and instruction. This unique program may offer a way to develop competent educational engineers capable of improving education for students with disabilities.
