2. Career Paths and Professionalism: Examining ICMA Credentials among City Managers.

- Abstract
The emphasis on professionalism in public administration has highlighted the importance of city managers and their role in managing cities effectively. While there are various avenues for city managers to improve their professionalism, such as a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree, there has been limited research on other organizations that facilitate professionalism. This paper focuses on the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) credentialing program. ICMA is a nationally recognized organization that helps dictate professional norms among city managers. The purpose of this paper is to explore the motivations of city managers who pursue additional credentials and to identify the types of city managers who are more likely to attain professional certification. I argue that the ambition of city managers, as measured through their career path, is related to their pursuit of professionalism. Specifically, city managers with a diagonal career path are more likely to attain additional professional certification compared to those with a ladder career path because it signals their promising ability to future employers, namely city councils. To test this hypothesis, this paper uses two datasets. The first dataset examines the career paths of city managers in California, Florida, and North Carolina from 2012 to 2023. The second dataset focuses on newly hired chief administrators from 2021 to 2023 across the United States, drawing data from the ICMA job advertising information. From these two datasets, I find that city managers with diagonal career paths are more likely to possess ICMA credentials than those with ladder career paths. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

4. Career planning matters: Intelligence-based career path predictions using data mining models − A longitudinal study.

It is essential for students to plan their careers because selecting the right career path shapes a person’s life. In such disciplines as computer science, information technology, and software engineering, assisting students toward appropriate employment is even more helpful. Thus, throughout the student’s education, they must evaluate their strengths to determine which professional sector corresponds to their abilities. It is for this reason that this research introduces an intelligencebased career recommendation system that will incorporate the analysis of such factors as the student’s academic performance, economic status, and demographic features to use data mining models in determining the best prospective career path to offer the student a more transparent and more informed vision and course to set on in the future. Three key aspects were addressed: first, one or another model and classifier for assessing the impact of pre-university education on the choice of a profession and, consequently, the selection of technologies were used. Second, these models accurately forecast students' careers using core courses, CGPA, and FYP data. Third, socioeconomic or demographic data was incorporated into the prediction to make it more accurate. Regarding the method of class distribution balancing, the Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE) approach was used. The study reveals that variables specifying preuniversity education directly impact students’ career choices and that, employing data mining techniques, career choices could be forecasted considering academic performance and other related factors. The career ladder system has proven to be effective in supporting nurses' professional development. However, its implementation has not been optimal, partly due to nurses' low motivation. Therefore, a strategy to develop an electronically integrated career ladder information management system, SIMCAR LASTRI, is needed to improve career ladder implementation. This study aims to analyze the effect of SIMCAR LASTRI development on nurses' motivation in implementing career ladder in Tanjungpinang. This study used an analytic quantitative method with a pre-post quasi-experiment design without a control group. Application development was conducted through ADDIE (Analyze, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) and RAD (Rapid Application Development) methods. The research subjects were executive nurses (n=76) with total sampling. Bivariate tests were conducted using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The results showed a significant effect on nurses' motivation before and after using the web-based SIMCAR LASTRI application, with a p value = 0.000 <0.05. The implementation of webbased SIMCAR LASTRI is feasible and has a significant influence on nurses' motivation in implementing career paths. Librarians can choose between the career strategy of staying put in one library or moving around to different libraries. Money may be the most important factor; but fringe benefits, cost of living, the librarian's financial needs, and moving expenses also matter. Professional considerations include: current job satisfaction, relationships with colleagues and administration, ultimate career goals, and job security. Lifestyle preferences can play a big part. Finally, moving may impact the librarian's personal relationships. School librarians lack promotion possibilities; the libraries are small and state certification is often needed. Moving between public libraries is easiest because job duties, status of librarians, and organizational structure are similar. The wide differences in special libraries create obstacles. Academic libraries present a complex challenge with differences in status, multiple promotion paths, and more varying responsibilities. The final decision is often less rationally based than most believe. The good news is that staying put or moving around are important in the short run, but both strategies can lead to successful library careers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This descriptive-interpretive qualitative study aimed to determine the expectations of instructors working in the Adventure-based Experiential Learning industry of a potential industry governing body. 23 Participants from across South Africa completed an online descriptive survey that revealed four central sub-themes: (1) Function; (2) Determine; (3) Guidance and (4) Centralised access. Participants highlighted the necessity and specific requirements of a South African professional body to provide a distinct career path for instructors. Considering the responsibilities of an industry body, participants expressed a strong concern for payment and employment conditions, whereas standards received strong agreement from the participants. It would require careful evaluation of the variety of fields instructors operate in, the specific requirements for each one of the fields and the expectations of the relevant industry role-players. This study was the first to provide insights into industry body requirements from a South African instructor's point of view, and these insights can assist in creating a reputable and well-recognised industry.

This study was conducted with the goal of developing and describing a career path model based on fairness at Dana Insurance. The success of career path programs should be coordinated with the organization’s human resources programs to aid the needs for employee progression in a working period in such a manner that the organization’s human resources approach its objectives. Because the process of personal planning of working life contains non-native components, an indigenous model was attempted to be constructed in this exploratory study to arrange the career route. The study was conducted qualitatively, and 44 components were found via interviews with 28 academic experts working in Dana Insurance, from the sampling approach through the theoretical saturation stage, and then through two fuzzy Delphi phases. They were classified into eight major categories based on their weight and score. According to the findings, the eight components, which include challenging work, latitude, balancing work and personal life, job security and stability, creativity and innovation, task competence, managerial competence, and service to others, are directly related to the career path model based on Fairness and have an impact on Dana insurance company. In the dynamic landscape of scientific research, imaging core facilities are vital hubs propelling collaboration and innovation at the technology development and dissemination frontier. Here, we present a collaborative effort led by Global BioImaging (GBI), introducing international recommendations geared towards elevating the careers of Imaging Scientists in core facilities. Despite the critical role of Imaging Scientists in modern research ecosystems, challenges persist in recognising their value, aligning performance metrics and providing avenues for career progression and job security. The challenges encompass a mismatch between classic academic career paths and service‐oriented roles, resulting in a lack of understanding regarding the value and impact of Imaging Scientists and core facilities and how to evaluate them properly. They further include challenges around sustainability, dedicated training opportunities and the recruitment and retention of talent. Structured across these interrelated sections, the recommendations within this publication aim to propose globally applicable solutions to navigate these challenges. These recommendations apply equally to colleagues working in other core facilities and research institutions through which access to technologies is facilitated and supported. This publication emphasises the pivotal role of Imaging Scientists in advancing research programs and presents a blueprint for fostering their career progression within institutions all around the world. LAY DESCRIPTION: In the exciting world of scientific research, imaging core facilities are essential hubs where scientists use advanced technologies to conduct experiments and uncover fascinating discoveries. What makes these facilities remarkable is that multiple scientists can access and utilise a variety of instruments for a wide range of multidisciplinary research projects, fostering collaboration and innovation. At the forefront of this scientific adventure are Imaging Scientists, experts who play a crucial role in planning experiments, preparing materials, adapting and acquiring technologies, collecting data, training and supporting researchers, analysing images and forming conclusions. Despite their pivotal contributions, there are challenges in recognising the importance of Imaging Scientists and ensuring they have ample opportunities to advance in their careers. These challenges include a mismatch between the typical academic career path and the unique roles and responsibilities of Imaging Scientists, a lack of widespread understanding of their value plus financial constraints, insufficient training opportunities, and difficulties in attracting and retaining talented individuals. To address these issues, Global BioImaging (GBI; www.globalbioimaging.org) has brought together Imaging Scientists from around the world to develop a generally applicable set of recommendations in three key areas: highlighting the significance and value of Imaging Scientists, making it easier to recruit and retain them, and supporting their ongoing learning and professional growth. A notable concept is to reimagine the traditional separation between academic roles and technical support roles. GBI envisions that these recommendations will not only benefit imaging facilities but also prove valuable for research institutions housing diverse technologies organised into core facilities. Recognising the diverse nature of research performing institutions globally, the GBI community sees this guide as a starting point that will initiate dialogue and instigate change, which should be periodically updated as the needs of Imaging Scientists change. This initial version lays a solid foundation for future enhancements, contributing to the acknowledgement and support of the invaluable work done by Imaging Scientists on a global scale. 11. Changing journalists' occupations: An analysis of Australian Census 2021.

The crisis in the news industry is affecting journalism as a profession. There are concerns about the increasing precarity of the job, with fewer opportunities of full-time employment and a clear career path. Through an analysis of the Australian Bureau of Statistics Census 2021 data, this study examines the current state of journalists' occupation. Since 2011, there was an overall decline (19 per cent) in the number of journalists in Australia. The largest reduction occurred in print media, where the number of journalists halved. In contrast, the number of 'journalists not further defined' increased by 39 per cent. This category reflects the increase in the number of journalists who would not typically be working in a traditional journalism role. Workers in these categories of 'not further defined' and 'not elsewhere classified' earn less, are younger and are less likely to be employed full-time. Overall, the data reveal that many journalists in 2021 are facing precarious work arrangements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

12. Career paths of the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) medalists.

Each year, six exceptionally talented high school students from each country participate in the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO). We thoroughly searched the internet to find the career paths of 2785 IMO medalists who participated in the competition from 1986 to 2005. We have found that the career paths of IMO medalists depend on their home country, despite their similar levels of mathematical talent. For example, the extent to which medalists studied abroad varies significantly among countries in the same geographical region and with comparable income levels. We also found that there is a high concentration in medalists' foreign education. For example, MIT educated more foreign medalists than any country except for the United States both at the undergraduate and Ph.D. levels. Roughly half of the medalists ended up working abroad. Education is found to be an important channel for the migrant medalists. Although majority of the medalists were educated in mathematics, more than three quarters of their non-academic jobs are either software or economics-finance related jobs. Most medalists who became academics are specialized in mathematics. While the rate of becoming a mathematician academic is not dependent on the income level of the medalists' home country, those from higher-income countries tend to have higher academic performance. There are studies that examine the impact of undergraduate research experiences on students, often concluding that there are benefits to such experiences. Using social career cognitive theory, our research aims to add to the literature by examining the long-term effects, including career path and inclusion in research field, of an undergraduate student research program. This research study used student testimony gathered through interviews to examine the influence of participation in an undergraduate STEM research experience for college first-year students that has been in place at the university for 10 years. Our main finding is that the influence of the experience on students' field of interest and future career aspirations solidified or changed the career paths of 19 out of 20 students, further corroborating the previous research about undergraduate research experiences as high-impact practices. 16. Determining Science Education Students’ Career Aspirations and Future Career Perspectives: A Narrative Inquiry

Despite achieving similar college degrees, students venture into different paths post-graduation. Having a career plan with career aspirations and future career perspectives is essential for an individual to have a more straightforward career path. This qualitative narrative inquiry research determined science education students’ career aspirations and future career perspectives. Nineteen college science education students in a state university in Zambales, Philippines, were asked about their written narratives describing their career aspirations and future career perspectives. Data from the participants were subjected to thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke’s (2006) framework. Findings showed that science education students’ career aspirations were (a) to teach and inspire students, (b) to pursue advanced studies, (c) to take licensure examinations, (d) to work abroad, and (e) to shift career. Meanwhile, the science education students’ perspectives toward their career after 10 years were (a) to become successful in the teaching field, (b) inspiring and teaching the students, (c) contented in the chosen profession, and (d) willing to embark on another journey. Based on the findings, researchers recommended the creation of career guidance and career management programs among graduating students to provide more apparent career aspirations and career perspectives among them as they become future professionals.

17. Beyond the GPA: Factors Influencing Life Satisfaction of Engineering Undergraduates.

This study investigates what factors determine general life satisfaction among engineering students in Serbia. A total of 405 students from engineering faculties have participated in the study. The research examines how alcohol and cigarette consumption, career path, future employment, and overall physical health impact satisfaction. The purpose of the study was to determine the extent to which each of these factors affects the life satisfaction of engineering students in Serbia, as well as to assess the overall satisfaction with current life among the youth. The study also aims to identify significant differences among students who vary in their GPA as well as between male and female respondents. To evaluate significant differences among the variables measured, statistical tests such as Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis were employed. Bonferroni correction was also used as a post-test to compare three or more groups. Significant differences between male (n= 181) and female students (n = 224) were found, predominantly in social factors as well as in family life and friendships. Students who achieved higher academic success showed increased satisfaction with family, social life and their overall life. Moreover, students receiving financial support exhibited greater satisfaction with their university experience and overall life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the dynamic landscape of the job market and the evolving nature of career paths, understanding the underlying values guiding the decisions of the youth becomes imperative. The results of the quantitative survey offer a broader perspective on the prevalence and significance of different values attributed to work and profession among young adults. Statistical analysis techniques are employed to explore correlations, trends, and variations across demographic variables, shedding light on the diversity and complexity of value orientations. Preliminary findings suggest a multiplicity of factors influencing young adults' perceptions and attitudes towards work and career. While traditional values such as financial stability and social status remain significant, emerging trends indicate a growing emphasis on work-life balance, personal fulfillment, and societal impact. The implications of these findings extend beyond academic discourse, offering valuable insights for policymakers, educators, employers, and career counselors. This study delves into the professional trajectories of 20 women leaders Vice President (VP) and above in the U.S. Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) sector. These accomplished women, carefully selected from Engineering News Record's (ENR's) Top 400 firms, shared their personal stories, discussing both triumphs and challenges influencing their journey to senior corporate positions. This collection of experiences provides valuable insights to identify the root causes of women's underrepresentation in the industry. Moreover, this investigation aims to create a career roadmap that supports early and mid-career women in their pursuit of success within AEC. Success factors contributing to these women's rise include a supportive partner, receiving early mentoring and possessing a genuine passion for their projects. Companies seeking to stand out and benefit from innovative outcomes that diversity offers should consider implementing diversity programs and fostering the growth of women throughout their careers. This may involve actively recruiting young women and providing funding for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) programs and scholarships for pre-college girls. 20. Impact of Employee Empowerment on Job Satisfaction: The Moderating Role of the Career Paths in Jordanian Commercial Banks.

In a banking environment, employees deal with a variety of tasks and stressors, and providing an empowering work environment can help reduce stress levels and increase job satisfaction. This study examined the impact of employee empowerment dimensions (autonomy, delegation, information sharing) on job satisfaction dimensions (work environment, colleague relationships, supervisor relationships) in Jordanian banks. Using structural equation modeling (SEM), the moderating role of career paths between these variables was also analyzed in this study. Electronic questionnaire was used to collect data from 354 bank employees. The results indicated a significant positive relationship between employee empowerment and job satisfaction, which was enhanced by career path development. Additionally, employee empowerment was found to have a significant impact on the work environment, colleagues' relationships, and supervisor relationships. The study recommended the decision-makers in the Jordanian commercial banks should pay more attention and provide job empowerment to the employees by providing information to them, delegating authority to them, and allowing them a space of independence in performing their work. - Abstract
Purpose: One of the biggest challenges in every person's life is choosing a job, which is affected by very important factors. Choosing a job is not an easy decision and has a lasting impact on a person's future. A person's environment, talents, skills, and educational progress affect the choice of a job, and if the wrong choice is made, it may lead to failure and disappointment. Therefore, the primary reason for choosing a job is to earn money and social status, which will ultimately influence a person's personality, behavior, and perspective. The career path, or in other words, the professional development path, is a long-term and complex process that is influenced by psychological, sociological, educational, physical, economic, and environmental factors. Methodology: This article is classified as a descriptive-applied type of research based on its purpose. Various scientometric techniques were utilized to analyze scientific productions in this study. The necessary data for this research were gathered from the Web of Science database. One notable feature of this database is its citation search capability, which enables users to refine their search by title, subject, and author. The statistical population for this study comprises scientific research articles related to the profession and occupation of accountants, published in the Web of Science database between 1972 and 2022. Initially, 4435 articles were retrieved, out of which 269 were not in English, 647 were not articles (as non-reviewed articles, conferences, and books were excluded), 3077 were not closely related to the accounting field (as three fields—management, business, and economics—were selected), and 39 were from 2023 and thus were excluded. Findings: The analysis of articles on accountants' career development revealed an increasing interest among researchers in this field. The highest number of articles were published in 2020 and 2021, while the lowest was in 1972. The word in the fifth cluster indicates its significance in research studies. Gender, mobility, job satisfaction, and performance were found to be linked to the word co-authorship map highlighted the United States as a leading research hub in this area, with 20 connections and 137 articles published. England followed with 17 connections and 51 articles. Conclusion: The purpose of this study is to create scientific maps illustrating the professional development trajectory of accountants. In scientometric research, the initial consideration should be the significance of quantitative and qualitative information regarding the subject being studied. Such studies reveal hidden realities in various scientific fields. Remote research points can pose significant challenges in the future or present remarkable prospects for further research, thereby reducing study gaps. The data for this research were extracted from the scientific database of Web of Science, and scientific maps were generated using VOSviewer software. The study initially analyzed the publication process of the scientific outputs indexed in the Web of Science database. The results indicated a recent increase in articles focusing on career paths, capturing researchers' attention. The first article, titled "Gender Career Paths, was published in 1998, marking the beginning of research in the field of employment. In the vocabulary co-occurrence map, out of the 1977 keywords, 114 words met the minimum threshold value (i.e., at least 5 repetitions). The mapping findings underscore the significance of the term in the co-authorship map of countries, 57 countries had published at least one article. According to the map results, America emerged as the primary research hub, with 137 articles and 20 communications. Notably, Iran was absent from this map, indicating a lack of collaboration on the subject under investigation. This study presents a Translation and Interpreting Teacher Role Identity (TITRI) trajectory, a sustainable career development model for T&I teachers. It employs a qualitative case study method to investigate the professional lives of three T&I teachers in China, mapping their role identity development across three stages using the Dynamic Systems Model of Role Identity (DSMRI). The findings highlight that the three case participants have experienced some major events, symbolizing a career path beginning as a T&I practitioner and culminating into a multifaceted role. The analysis emphasizes how major events define the TITRI trajectory, shaping T&I teachers’ professional paths and highlighting the dynamic interplay between their personal experiences and professional development. The TITRI trajectory enhances our understanding of the professional role identity of T&I teachers. It adds to the existing literature on T&I teacher professional development by providing deeper insights into the mechanisms that help T&I teachers in cultivating their roles as trainers/educators, researchers and practitioners within the higher educational context.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic increased online education, it restricted clinical training, extracurricular activities, and interprovincial travel. Therefore, this study aimed to examine whether the COVID-19 pandemic influenced the choice of training hospitals and career paths among 3rd- to 6th-year medical students in Japan. Methods We developed a questionnaire comprising 21 multiple-choice and 1 open-ended questions, which was administered anonymously via online platforms. The survey targeted Japanese medical students to obtain insights into their preferences for training hospitals and career paths during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants included 4th- to 6th-year medical students from 51 medical schools in Japan. The survey was conducted through student networks from 8 February 2022 to 20 March 2022. Results Overall, 507 medical students participated in the survey, with representation from various academic years as follows: 102 (20.1%), 134 (26.4%), 121 (23.9%), and 150 (29.6%) students from the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th year, respectively. Of these, 338 (66.6%) students reported that the COVID-19 pandemic had influenced their choice of training hospitals. The degree of the influence varied based on the university region and the student year. However, most of the students (473, 93.3%) did not change their course for clinical, basic research, or administrative pathways due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Among the clinically oriented students, 391 (77.2%) did not change their preferred speciality. Conclusions The COVID-19 pandemic influenced medical students’ choice of training hospitals. Although many students believed that the pandemic would not change their career choices, our results indicate a potential subconscious trend to avoid internal medicine, which is the speciality most directly involved in treating patients with COVID-19.

Despite achieving similar college degrees, students venture into different paths post-graduation. Having a career plan with career aspirations and future career perspectives is essential for an individual to have a more straightforward career path. This qualitative narrative inquiry research determined science education students' career aspirations and future career perspectives. Nineteen college science education students in a state university in Zambales, Philippines, were asked about their written narratives describing their career aspirations and future career perspectives. Data from the participants were subjected to thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke's (2006) framework. Findings showed that science education students' career aspirations were (a) to teach and inspire students, (b) to pursue advanced studies, (c) to take licensure examinations, (d) to work abroad, and (e) to shift career. Meanwhile, the science education students' perspectives toward their career after 10 years were (a) to become successful in the teaching field, (b) inspiring and teaching the students, (c) contented in the chosen profession, and (d) willing to embark on another journey. Based on the findings, researchers recommended the creation of career guidance and career management programs among graduating students to provide more apparent career aspirations and career perspectives among them as they become future professionals. Students need access to high-quality career guidance to make informed, long-term career decisions. This study discusses the impact of career guidance or the lack thereof on students' decision-making when choosing a future profession. The study draws on Gottfredson's career theory of conscription and compromise to understand how young people sacrifice potential career options that they consider compatible with their self-concept in favour of those that seem more accessible. The study adopted a qualitative case-study research design involving eight final year student teachers as participants. The study's findings show that students rarely received career guidance. In addition, none of the participating students initially wished to become teachers; they nonetheless ended up majoring in education for several reasons, including not meeting the prerequisites for their first choices of study, the unavailability of other courses at the local campus, finances, and employment availability. The study results indicate a need to enhance the career-guidance system in secondary schools or even earlier to assist young people in selecting viable careers in a constantly evolving labour market. The study recommends for strengthened linkages and collaboration between schools and psychologists or social workers from line ministries or other agencies that offer career counselling to students. The study further recommends for Institutions of higher education to focus on career education and counselling training to produce graduates who are qualified to work in the guidance and counselling field. The theme of community pervades all of the responses and current trends are identified. A potential solution to the problem of how to increase access to dental care for the underserved and vulnerable populations is to establish an early pipeline of underrepresented and minority college students for a career in dentistry. This study aims to explore factors associated with such pre-dental students' future intentions to serve. A cross-sectional design was utilized with 144 participants completing the questionnaire with four sections, including participants' demographics, experience in access to dental care, psychosocial factors, and intention to serve the underserved and vulnerable populations. Descriptive statistics, chi-squared test, and logistic regression were used for statistical analyses. A positive attitude (OR = 12.03) and higher confidence towards addressing access to dental care issues (OR = 10.43) were found to be the strongest factor for higher intention to serve the underserved and vulnerable populations. Higher knowledge on the prevalence of dental caries among children (OR = 3.18) and participants who experienced difficulty in getting a dental appointment, or finding an available dentist when needed (OR = 3.43), were also associated with higher intention. Identifying key factors associated with higher intention to serve the underserved and vulnerable populations as a future dentist may facilitate workforce recruitment in the Health Profession Shortage Areas (HPSAs).

The possibility of using digital traces of online social network users, using community themes as an example, to support decision-making in career guidance diagnostics is investigated. Statistical analysis was performed: descriptive statistics, z-criterion for comparing two groups, and regression analysis. The themes of users’ subscriptions to various communities available in the social network as well as the gender of the respondent and the number of friends in the social network indicated in the profile were analysed as digital user traces. The socio-professional orientation of the personality was assessed based on the results of the Holland test (edited by G.V. Rezapkina). The correlation between users’ digital traces expressed by the themes of subscriptions, and key indicators of socio-professional orientation reflected in the results of the Holland test was analyzed based on the pilot study conducted through an online social networking application. The statistical analysis confirmed the hypothesis that user interests, in the form of community themes, are related to the results of the Holland test. The hypotheses of existing differences in the groups of men and women in the studied attributes (the results of the Holland test and the leading themes of community subscriptions) were proved. By means of regression analysis among the group of women the correlation was found between the prevalence of the community theme “Education” and the key indicators: A (Artistic), E (Enterprising), I (Intellectual); prevalence of the theme “Lifestyle” and severity of the indicators: C (Conventional), I, A, E; “Mass Media” and indicator C. Among the group of men, a correlation was found between the prevalence of “Sports” subject matter and indicator E. The results of the work expanded the space of potential predictors of users’ vocational orientation. A foundation for large-scale research in quantifying and constructing predictive models of key occupational indicators based on users’ subscription topics has been obtained. The results are useful in the direction of developing an integrated approach to creating a recommendation system for user career guidance.

37. Transformed through the CARTA experience: changes reported by CARTA fellows about their PhD journey

Transformative learning occurs when a person, group, or larger social unit encounters ideas that are at odds with their prevailing perspective. This discrepant perspective can lead to an examination of previously held beliefs, values, and assumptions. The Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA) has since 2011 been training and supporting faculty from different African universities, to become more reflective and productive researchers, research leaders, educators, and change agents who will drive institutional changes in their institutions. As part of a mid-term evaluation of CARTA, an open-ended question was posed to the CARTA fellows asking them to describe any changes they had experienced in their professional lives as a result of the CARTA Programme. The 135 responses were inductively coded and analysed using qualitative thematic analysis. These themes were subsequently mapped onto Hoggan’s typology of transformative learning outcomes. CARTA fellows reported shifts in their sense of self; worldviews; beliefs about the definition of knowledge, how it is constructed and evaluated; and changes in behaviour/practices and capacities. This paper argues that the changes described by the CARTA fellows reflect transformative learning that is embedded in CARTA’s Theory of Change. The reported transformation was enabled by a curriculum intentionally designed to facilitate critical reflection, further exploration, and questioning, both formally and informally during the fellows’ PhD journey with the support of CARTA facilitators. Documenting and disseminating these lessons provide a guide for future practice, and educators wishing to revitalise their PhD training may find it useful to review the CARTA PhD curriculum.

Translational research (TR) is the movement of fundamental scientific discoveries into healthcare settings and population health policy, and parallels the goals of DOHaD research. Unfortunately, there is little guidance on how to become a translational researcher. To understand the opinions of DOHaD trainees towards TR, we conducted a workshop at the DOHaD World Congress 2022. We found that trainees were enthusiastic for their work to have translational impact, and that they feel that holistic, multidisciplinary solutions may lead to more generalisable research. However, there lacks support for TR career pathways, which may stall the execution of the long-term vision of the DOHaD agenda. We put forward recommendations for trainees to clarify their purpose in pursuing TR and for seeking relevant people and patronages to support their training paths. For mentors, training institutions, and scientific societies, we recommend developing TR-specific programmes, and implementing training opportunities, networking events, and funding to support these endeavours. 41. A Perioperative Specialty Elective to Address the Perioperative Nursing Shortage: Student Perspectives and Outcomes.

To help solve the perioperative nursing shortage, it is imperative that health care leaders understand why students choose or do not choose to pursue a career in perioperative nursing. In May 2021, we published the results of a specialty elective course evaluation from a leadership and perioperative services personnel perspective; in the current article, we examine the same program from the students' perspective. We distributed survey links to undergraduate nursing students to evaluate their perioperative knowledge before and after completing the course. Students reported large gains in knowledge, critical thinking, teamwork, and confidence at course completion, but the posttest mean number of students with an interest in pursuing perioperative nursing was lower than the pretest mean. This realization is perceived as a positive outcome of the perioperative elective course because it may lead to a decrease in turnover among newly hired perioperative nurses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research explores career development in the construction industry. By showcasing the career narratives of managers of construction sites (N=21), the research unfolds which elements are significant in influencing career development and aims to increase the possibilities for construction workers to flourish in their careers and help make such careers more attractive. The career narratives were analyzed in two phases. First, the analysis of narratives showed that except for the various career experiences, the proximity of construction sites in the interviewees’ managerial career goals differentiated the narratives. Second, as a result of narrative analysis, three construction managerial career paths were identified: I) devotion to construction site management, II) interest in versatile construction projects, and III) passion for leadership. Career development could be viewed from the perspective of various capitals which emerge in the narratives. The interviewees brought up societal and economic changes that challenged or boosted their careers or even caused them to change direction. Career goals might not have been achieved as such if they were not enabled by external factors, such as organizational, economic, societal, or location-related issues or favorable coincidences. The participants found favorable options and solutions for career development by drawing on their social and psychological resources. Social capital supported career choice and career development, whereas psychological capital appeared as, for example, optimism, perseverance, and an ability to follow one’s calling. Engineering Management (EM) has a long history in Australia as far back as 1968. However, a review of scholarly papers has revealed a lack of attention from researchers for this discipline in the past 10 years, especially topics about industrial demand and competency. This paper is to provide a review of current EM practices in Australia, classified into Occupation and Market demand, Professional Society, and Required Qualifications and Competency. A review of EM practices in Australia has been conducted through 24 scholarly papers from 1991 to 2022 along with a statistical analysis of data from government and professional society. The review has revealed the increasing market demand for engineering managers (EMers). Temporary and permanent visa has been offered since 2005 and 2012 respectively to fill the gap in the domestic market. The EM career path with required years of experience and the trend of qualifications are also synthesized from different research and data. Different from the US, Australia is lacking a professional society that is dedicated to the management and promotion of this discipline in the country. EM competency is currently defined by Engineers Australia (EA) only for migration purposes. The paper raises the awareness of management skills for all engineers on their engineering career path. This paper also provides implications for strategic plans, particularly for educational institutions in developing engineering management programs. Further, recommendations for future research directions are outlined. This is the first literature review paper on EM practices in Australia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Presenting an audit report is the basis for developing competitive strategies that, in the form of operational transparency, are able to guide stakeholders in financial decisions and inform them of operational information and facts. Because auditors have a crucial role to play in reporting these reports, they need to be more balanced, both professionally and on the basis of psychological functions, in finding performance gaps with the functional realities of companies. Therefore, knowing the individual characteristics in this area can help to develop the functions of the audit report. This is because auditors, like any person in charge of a profession, may face disruptions and negative performance characteristics that make it difficult for them to disclose corporate performance facts. Hence this study was to analyze the causes of alienation of conduct in a professional career path for a more comprehensive understanding of the auditor's job is frustration. This research is a mix of methods because through the analysis of grounded theory and with the participation of 17 auditing experts, it seeks to identify the components and statements related to the causes of behavioral alienation in the professional career path of trusted auditors of the Stock Exchange Organization. Then, through the link analysis method and with the participation of trusted auditors of the stock exchange organization, it tries to examine the stimuli and consequences of behavioral alienation in the professional career path of auditors in the form of a systematic representation model. The results obtained from the qualitative part of the existence of three cultural; Social and structural dimensions in the form of 7 categories. The results in the quantitative part also showed that the lack of symbols of professional behavior in the auditors of the stock exchange organization under the component of cultural dimension is the most important functional stimulus in auditors' professional frustrations as causes of professional behavior alienation that can result from this cultural disorder. Cause social conflicts in the professional work of certified auditors of the stock exchange organization.

Since the 1960s, career success has been extensively studied from different angles. This paper aims to identify the main topics of interest covered by the literature throughout time frames defined based on the number of article citations. A Scopus database search was performed in November 2021, gathering 926 articles on career success that were analyzed in VOSviewer. The results show that several concepts were constant over the years, such as mentoring, mobility, income, education, gender, and culture, while other topics of interest were introduced more recently (e.g., career satisfaction, change, personality, networking, the link between the private and professional life, the relationship between objective and subjective career success). An understanding of historical career success research topics contributes to the development of future human resources strategies and policies.
