This study examined the influence of career choice on professional and job commitment, factors influencing career choice, the perceptions on professionalization and the extent to which career choice has influenced the growth, job and professional commitment of librarians in selected libraries in Oyo and Ogun states of Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design was adopted with questionnaire as the research instrument. The reliability co-efficient of the instrument was 0.83. The statistical methods used to analyze the data obtained were descriptive statistics of frequency distribution counts, percentages and tables for the demographic variables and standard deviation for research questions. Findings revealed that intellectual development obtained the highest score (61.8%; mean 4.26, Std Dev. = 1.17), as the greatest factor that influences career choice of librarians, while findings also showed that the major perceptions of librarians about the professionalization of librarianship was poor as majority of the respondents indicates they hate being librarians though majority indicated that their career choice of librarianship has influenced its growth (scores = 118; 69.8%; mean 4.72; StdDev = .50). The study concludes that intellectual development played significant role in the career choice of librarians. The study recommended that intellectual development activities should further be intensified in librarianship. We set up a dynamic adverse selection model to explain how career concerns may induce managers in state-owned enterprises (SOEs) to restructure their firms. It is shown how government monopsony power over managers led to the ratchet effect under a socialist economy, even under reforms coming short of privatization. The introduction of a managerial labour market, through privatization, introduces competition for managers and eliminates the ratchet effect, thereby inducing managers to restructure. The model is consistent with the empirical evidence of SOEs restructuring in transition economies.

Objective To gather information on the factors that influence students' decisions to choose dietetics as a career. Design Self-administered questionnaires regarding the point at which career decisions were made were completed by 1,695 students in Plan IV/V dietetics programs throughout the United States. Subjects All Plan IV/V dietetics programs that reported greater than five graduates in the academic year 1989 to 1990 were selected from the 1990-1991 Directory of Dietetic Programs for the sample population. Of the 156 schools that were mailed questionnaires, responses were received from 84 schools (54%). Almost 90% of the students were women, 10.6% were men. Statistical analyses Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. A [[Chi].sup.2] analysis was used to examine the relationship between point of decision and factors that influenced career choice, including people who influence career choice. Results The majority of students (55%) questioned reported making their career decision in college. Students rated interest in nutrition (96.3%) and job enjoyment (93.8%) as factors that were important in their decision to pursue a career in dietetics. College catalogs were rated by 48.3% of the students as being either useful or very useful in helping them make their career selection. With respect to gender differences, women rated a diverse work environment as being very important to their career decision more frequently than men ([[Chi].sup.2]=15.44, P<.01). Women were more likely than men to rate part-time work opportunities as being very important ([[Chi].sup.2]=26.75, P<.001); and selected working with people as being very important to their career decision ([[Chi].sup.2]=17.59, P<.01). Conclusions Findings identified that recruitment strategies need to be audience specific. Because career decision making appears to occur during one of three time flames (high school, college, or work experience), recruitment activities should be developed to specifically target students at these times. One way to increase the exposure of students to the profession of dietetics is for registered dietitians to give guest lectures in introductory college courses and high school upper-class courses in health, home economics, and biology. The use of university/college catalogs as effective marketing tools should also not be underestimated. Data suggest that gender differences exist in factors that influence persons to choose dietetics as a career. To increase the number of men who pursue careers in dietetics, future research should be designed to more fully explore gender differences, so that strategies to recruit more men into the profession can be developed.

The reasons behind the small number of women in engineering were analyzed. The main reason was found to be a general lack of encouragement to go into the field of engineering. Teachers should take steps in promoting interest to both their male and female students. Schools may invite speakers to inform students about the engineering profession. Parents must also become aware of the various career opportunities avaliable to inform their daughters of the many choices they have.

A model of credit markets under asymmetric information is proposed in which individuals differ in abilities that are valued in both entrepreneurship and paid employment. Unlike the heterogeneous ability model of de Meza and Webb (1987), over-investment is not inevitable: under-investment and credit rationing can occur instead. This result depends on the novel possibility of there being greater separation of types in paid employment than in entrepreneurship. The model allows individuals to be monitored in both occupations, and permits derivation of the conditions under which the novel possibility holds. The role of corrective government policies is also discussed.
