This article addresses the problem of practical definitions of disasters. Theoretically and methodologically supported by pragmatically oriented sociological approaches, its considerations are based on the analysis of political discursive action about landslides associated with pluvial events set between 2010 and 2022 in the Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro. The main finding is the relevance of the idea of tragedy to interpret disasters, something that follows two primary paths of discursive construction: naming and narrative.
