Environmental sciences ,GE1-350 - Abstract
In shallow geothermal energy systems (SGES) thermal conduction can be considered the dominant process in the heat transfer between the primary circuit (borehole heat exchanger or thermoactive geostructure) and the surrounding ground. Thus, a proper characterization of soil thermal properties, namely of its thermal conductivity, is mandatory for evaluating this energy exchange. There are difficulties associated to the assessment of soil thermal conductivity by laboratory methods related, among other factors, to the samples’ quality and to the measuring method itself. The purpose of this work is to analyse the effect of changing test control parameters in thermal conductivity measurements in transient conditions by means of a high accuracy thermal probe in both dry and fully saturated states. In order to eliminate potential measurements’ deviations and errors due to sample variability the same reconstituted samples were used several times. In each condition the sand samples were systematically tested under different ambient temperatures (10ºC, 20ºC, and 40ºC) controlled by means of a climatic chamber. The effects of changing the tests heating time and imposed thermal fluxes were also analysed.

Astrophysics - Astrophysics of Galaxies ,Astrophysics - Solar and Stellar Astrophysics - Abstract
We present ALMA continuum and molecular line emission maps at $\sim$1 mm of OH 231.8, a well studied bipolar nebula around an AGB star. The excellent angular resolution of our maps ($\sim$20 mas) allows us to scrutinise the central nebular regions of OH 231.8, which hold the clues to unravel how this iconic object assembled its complex nebular architecture. We report, for the first time in this object and others of its kind, the discovery of a rotating circumbinary disk selectively traced by NaCl, KCl, and H$_2$O emission lines. This represents the first detection of KCl in an oxygen-rich AGB circumstellar envelope. The rotating disk, of radius $\sim$30 au, lies at the base of a young bipolar wind traced by SiO and SiS emission, which also presents signs of rotation at its base. The NaCl equatorial structure is characterised by a mean rotation velocity of $\sim$4 km s$^{-1}$ and extremely low expansion speeds, $\sim$3 km s$^{-1}$. The outflow has a predominantly expansive kinematics characterised by a constant radial velocity gradient of $\sim$65 km s$^{-1}$ arcsec$^{-1}$ at its base. Beyond $r$$\sim$350 au, the gas in the outflow continues radially flowing at a constant terminal speed of $\sim$16 km s$^{-1}$. Our continuum maps reveal a spatially resolved dust disk-like structure perpendicular to the outflow, with the NaCl, KCl and H$_2$O emission arising from the disk's surface layers. Within the disk, we also identify an unresolved point continuum source, which likely represents the central Mira-type star QX Pup enshrouded by a $\sim$3 $R_{\star}$ component of hot ($\sim$1400 K) freshly formed dust. The point source is slightly off-centered from the disk centroid, enabling us for the first time to place constraints to the orbital separation and period of the central binary system, $a$$\sim$20 au and $P_{\rm orb}$$\sim$55 yr, respectively. - Abstract
Understandings of the nature of scientific inquiry (NOSI), as opposed to engaging students in inquiry learning experiences, are included in science education reform documents around the world. However, little is known about what students have learned about NOSI during their pre-college school years. The purpose of this large-scale follow-up international project (i.e. 32 countries and regions, spanning six continents and including 3917 students for the high school sample) was to collect data on what exiting high school students have learned about NOSI. Additionally, the study investigated changes in 12th grade students' NOSI understandings compared to seventh grade (i.e. 20 countries and regions) students' understandings from a prior investigation [Lederman et al. (2019). An international collaborative investigation of beginning seventh grade students' understandings of scientific inquiry: Establishing a baseline. "Journal of Research in Science Teaching," 56(4), 486-515. https://doi.org/10.1002/tea.21512]. This study documents and discusses graduating high school students' understandings and compares their understandings to seventh grade students' understandings of the same aspects of scientific inquiry for each country. It is important to note that collecting data from each of the 130+ countries globally was not feasible. Similarly, it was not possible to collect data from every region of each country. A concerted effort was made, however, to provide a relatively representative picture of each country and the world.

- Abstract
Harmful plastic debris found on beaches and in the oceans are not limited to drinking straws or bags. There are several synthetic organic polymers that can be used to make different kinds of plastic materials and have resulted in billions of tons of waste that can reach the aquatic biome and are harmful to freshwater and marine communities as well as humans. Small pieces, known as microplastics, are very small (<5mm) and can readily be ingested by marine organisms, causing dangerous threats to the food supply chain. Although plastic debris appears as particles of varying size, shape, color, and chemical composition, its origin or source cannot easy be identified by the naked eye. Sometimes, it is also difficult to identify whether debris is made of plastics materials. However, plastic debris sources can be revealed by applying basic concepts of the interaction of infrared radiation with matter. If a sample is irradiated with infrared light, a part of the radiation can be absorbed and provide detailed information about the structure of chemical compounds, such as the arrangement of nuclei and chemical bonds within the molecule. Chemical features of a molecule allow identification of the type of polymer that makes up a plastic material. In this paper the authors describe a multidisciplinary approach to teaching the interaction of infrared light and the vibrating process of molecules to characterize plastic pollutants. The practical classes involve both indoor and outdoor activities, divided into four steps: choice of case study site; plastic debris sampling; sample preparation and physical and chemical characterization of plastic debris (size, color, shape and polymer type); data interpretation and identification of the main plastic debris sources. The first three steps, which include outdoor activities, can also be performed by students of all ages, as well as by geography, environmental science and biology teachers who are fundamental in multidisciplinary studies. The data interpretation step that involves the polymer identification is performed at the laboratory, by using ATR-FTIR and/or optical transmittance sensor systems. Finally, the identification of the main plastic debris sources and the final conclusions are tasks that can be performed in a multidisciplinary way.

We present an archival search for transient gravitational-wave bursts in coincidence with 27 single pulse triggers from Green Bank Telescope pulsar surveys, using the LIGO, Virgo and GEO interferometer network. We also discuss a check for gravitational-wave signals in coincidence with Parkes Fast Radio Bursts using similar methods. Data analyzed in these searches were collected between 2007 and 2013. Possible sources of emission of both short-duration radio signals and transient gravitational-wave emission include starquakes on neutron stars, binary coalescence of neutron stars, and cosmic string cusps. While no evidence for gravitational-wave emission in coincidence with these radio transients was found, the current analysis serves as a prototype for similar future searches using more sensitive second-generation interferometers.

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
We present the discovery of five millisecond pulsars (MSPs) from the PALFA Galactic plane survey using Arecibo. Four of these (PSRs J0557+1551, J1850+0244, J1902+0300, and J1943+2210) are binary pulsars whose companions are likely white dwarfs, and one (PSR J1905+0453) is isolated. Phase-coherent timing solutions, ranging from $\sim$1 to $\sim$3 years in length, and based on observations from the Jodrell Bank and Arecibo telescopes, provide precise determinations of spin, orbital, and astrometric parameters. All five pulsars have large dispersion measures ($>100$ pc cm$^{-3}$, within the top 20% of all known Galactic field MSPs) and are faint (1.4 GHz flux density < 0.1 mJy, within the faintest 5% of all known Galactic field MSPs), illustrating PALFA's ability to find increasingly faint, distant MSPs in the Galactic plane. In particular, PSR J1850+0244 has a dispersion measure of 540 pc cm$^{-3}$, the highest of all known MSPs. Such distant, faint MSPs are important input for accurately modeling the total Galactic MSP population., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, ApJ in press

720 - Abstract
This research project investigates whether second-tier urban regions in Europe have functional, spatial, socio-economic and institutional characteristics which differentiate them in meaningful ways from primate urban regions. Based on the argument that second-tier urban regions can particularly profit from integration at that scale, it then explores whether the specific features detected may provide them with a greater ability to pursue that goal. The study fills two important gaps, as we do not know what differentiates second-tier urban regions regarding the aspects above, and in what ways those characteristics affect their integration processes. The research also helps to reveal a new and yet unexplored set of strategic options for second-tier cities, whose urgency is proportional to the extent to which they are neglected or hampered in their national urban systems. At a moment when cities have turned into large urban regions, size, functional mass and diversity and city-regional governance have been argued as major drivers of economic development, and the European economic and policy climate favours strategies that work more effectively with existing assets rather than adding new ones, integration is not only an ongoing territorial process but also a relevant strategic approach for second-tier urban regions. The research proposes an original interpretative lens to observe the integration of urban regions, namely the concept of metropolisation, a perspective which is not spatially selective and acknowledges different forms of urbanity, making a conceptual transition from a notion of cities dissolving into urban regions to one of urban regions consolidating into 'extensive cities'. The appropriateness of this concept to read contemporary urbanisation modes may find a particularly fitting response in the spatial features of second-tier urban regions. The study applies a set of comparative research methods to European second-tier urban regions, gradually focusing on three main cases studies: Porto, Portugal, Bristol, UK and Antwerp, Belgium.

CHILDBEARING age ,POLYCYSTIC ovary syndrome ,CORN oil ,EWES ,SHEEP - Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the leading cause of anovulatory infertility in women of reproductive age, and obesity can increase the severity and development of the PCOS phenotype. Prenatal testosterone (T) treatment between gestational days 30-90 advanced puberty and disrupted the reproductive and metabolic phenotype in female sheep, recapitulating attributes of women with PCOS, with postnatal obesity amplifying its severity. On the other hand, prenatal T treatment from gestational days 60-90 led to a much milder phenotype. We hypothesized that reproductive neuroendocrine defects programmed by prenatal T treatment between gestational days 60-90 are amplified by postnatal obesity in sheep. Suffolk ewes received T propionate (T; 100 mg) or corn oil (C; vehicle) twice weekly from gestational days 60-90. At 5 months of age, T lambs were assigned to either a maintenance (100% of NRC requirements) or overfed (130% NRC) diet and C lambs were fed the maintenance diet. We compared the timing of puberty (n = 15/group) determined by twice weekly measurement of progesterone concentrations, estradiol positive feedback responsiveness (n = 8/group) determined by assessing LH secretion in response to exogenous estradiol, periovulatory LH dynamics during the second breeding season (n = 8/group) following synchronization with two injections of PGF2α, and progesterone negative feedback (n = 8/group) determined by characterizing LH pulses during the mid-luteal phase between C, T-maintenance and T-overfed groups. Our findings indicate that postnatal obesity: 1) exacerbated reproductive defects and further deteriorated reproductive cyclicity during the second breeding season (adulthood); 2) did not amplify the impairment in estradiol positive feedback in delaying the timing and amplitude of the LH surge, although it reduced the total amount of LH secreted during the preovulatory LH surge; 3) amplified the reduced responsiveness to progesterone negative feedback manifested as an increase in LH pulse amplitude and peak. These observations, in addition to supporting our previous findings that prenatal T treatment results in reproductive neuroendocrine dysfunction and periovulatory disruptions, provide evidence that these neuroendocrine defects programmed between gestational days 60-90 are amplified by postnatal obesity in female sheep. PHYTOREMEDIATION ,METRONIDAZOLE ,MACROPHYTES - Abstract
The present study evaluated the effect of the Fenton process as pretreatment for metronidazole (MNZ) removal coupled with a phytoremediation system using Scirpus lacustris as macrophyte. Initial concentrations of 0.5, 5, 10, 15, and 20 mg MNZ/L were studied in batch cultures. Results obtained in the MNZ removal by phytoremediation showed efficiencies of 93 ± 2%, 81 ± 4%, 85 ± 1%, 84 ± 2%, and 87 ± 6%, respectively. The metronidazole pretreated by the Fenton process and subsequently fed to the phytoremediation system increased the removal efficiencies up to 93 ± 3%, 99 ± 1%, 99 ± 4%, 94 ± 2%, and 94 ± 3%, respectively. Individual studies with Scirpus lacustris in touch with metronidazole displayed relative growth rates of 0.02–0.04 d
−1 , showing the not toxic effect of the antibiotic on the macrophyte growth. On the other hand, the BMG kinetic model best describes the removal of MNZ by phytoremediation. Finally, applying the Fenton process as a pretreatment makes the MNZ more assimilable for the phytoremediation system, converting the integration of Fenton with the phytoremediation like other attractive technology to be considered in removing emerging compounds. According to the World Health Organization, dengue fever is the most important mosquito-borne disease of humans, and it is currently estimated that there may be 50 - 100 million yearly dengue infections worldwide. For the purpose to provide new techniques to public health policies in course, we introduce a predictive non-linear population dynamics model to describe the population size of four stages of the development of \emph{Aedes aegypti}, having the coefficients set to be dependent on the rainfall index data. In spite of the population dynamics of the \emph{Ae. aegypti} be mainly ruled by the rainfall regime, most models are dedicated exclusively to effects of temperature and only few models are dedicated to influence of rainfall. Vector control actions are also implemented in many periods of the year in order to compare relative efficiency of public health policies. The analysis of equilibrium and stability was performed. Field rainfall time series data from the City of Lavras (Minas Gerais, Brazil) was used for the model evaluation. The model was validated in a comparison with experimental mosquito abundance data acquired by field health agents. We evaluated and validated an entomological conjecture that claims that control actions should be performed during the dry season, instead of the common procedure adopted by vector control programs, in which those are mainly applied in the rainy season., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures. Physics - Geophysics - Abstract
A simple magma accretion model of the oceanic lithosphere is proposed and its implications for understanding the thermal field of oceanic lithosphere examined. The new model (designated VBA) assumes existence of lateral variations in magma accretion rates and temperatures at the boundary zone between the lithosphere and the asthenosphere. Heat flow and bathymetry variations calculated on the basis of the VBA model provide vastly improved fits to respective observational datasets. The improved fits have been achieved for the entire age range and without the need to invoke the ad-hoc hypothesis of large-scale hydrothermal circulation in stable ocean crust. The results suggest that estimates of global heat loss need to be downsized by at least 25%., Comment: 45 pages, 11 figures

Condensed Matter - Superconductivity - Abstract
We report on the vortex dynamics of a single crystal of the non-centrosymmetric heavy-fermion superconductor CePt$_{3}$Si. Decays of the remnant magnetization display a clean logarithmic time dependence with rates that follow the temperature dependence expected from the Kim-Anderson theory. The creep rates are lower than observed in any other centrosymmetric superconductor and are not caused by high critical currents. On the contrary, the critical current in CePt$_{3}$Si is considerably lower than in other superconductors with strong vortex pinning indicating that an alternative impediment on the flux line motion might be at work in this superconductor., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

Astrophysics - Abstract
As the most common environment in the universe, groups of galaxies are likely to contain a significant fraction of the missing baryons in the form of intergalactic gas. The density of this gas is an important factor in whether ram pressure stripping and strangulation affect the evolution of galaxies in these systems. We present a method for measuring the density of intergalactic gas using bent-double radio sources that is independent of temperature, making it complementary to current absorption line measurements. We use this method to probe intergalactic gas in two different environments: inside a small group of galaxies as well as outside of a larger group at a 2 Mpc radius and measure total gas densities of $4 \pm 1_{-2}^{+6} \times 10^{-3}$ and $9 \pm 3_{-5}^{+10} \times 10^{-4}$ per cubic centimeter (random and systematic errors) respectively. We use X-ray data to place an upper limit of $2 \times 10^6$ K on the temperature of the intragroup gas in the small group., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in ApJ
